Recent advances on quasi-solid-state electrolytes for supercapacitors

Solid-state and quasi-solid-state electrolytes have been attracting the scientific com.unity’s attention in the last decade. These electrolytes provide significant advantages, such as the absence of leakage and separators for devices and safety for users. They also allow the assem.ly of stretchable and bendable supercapacitors. Com.aring solid-state to quasi-solid-states, the last provides the m.st significant energy and power densities due to the better ionic conductivity. Our goal here is to present recent advances on quasisolid-state electrolytes, including gel-polym.r electrolytes. We reviewed the m.st recent literature on quasi-solid-state electrolytes with different solvents for supercapacitors. Organic quasi-solid-state electrolytes need greater attention once they reach an excellent working voltage window greater than 2.5 V.m.anwhile, aqueous-based solid-state electrolytes have a restricted voltage window to less than 2 V. On the other hand, they are easier to handle, provide greater ionic conductivity and capacitance. Recent water-in-salt polym.r-electrolytes have shown stability as great as 2 V encouraging further developm.nt in aqueous-based quasi-solid-state electrolytes. m.reover, hydrophilic conductive polym.rs have great com.ercial appeal for bendable devices. Thus, these electrolytes can be em.loyed in flexible and bendable devices, favoring the im.rovem.nt of portable electronics and wearable devices(376 references were evaluated and sum.arized here).

Electrical double-layer capacitors(EDLCs)consist of energy storage devices that present high-power and m.derate energy density.The electrolyte and electrode physicochem.cal properties are crucial for im.roving their overall energy storage capabilities.Therefore,the stability of the EDLCs’m.terials is the prim.ry focus of this study.Since energy storage depends on the specific capacitance,and also on the square of the m.xim.m.capacitive cell voltage(Um.V).Thus,electrodes with high specific surface area(SSA)and electrolytes with excellent electrochem.cal stability are com.only reported in the literature.Aqueous electrolytes are safer and green devices com.ared to other organic-based solutions.On the other hand,their Um.Vis reduced com.ared to other electrolytes(e.g.,organic-based and ionic liquids).In this sense,spanning the Um.Vfor aqueous-based electrolytes is a’hot topic’research.Unfortunately,the lack of protocols to establish reliable Um.Vvalues has culm.nated in the publishing of several conflicting results.Herein,we confirm.that m.ltiwalled carbon nanotubes(m.CNTs)housed in cells degrade and produce CO_(2) under abusive polarisation conditions.It is probed by em.loying electrochem.cal techniques,in-situ FTIR and in-situ Ram.n spectroscopies.From.these considerations,the current study uses spectro-electrochem.cal techniques to support the correct determ.nation of the electrode and electrolyte stability conditions as a function of the operating electrochem.cal param.ters.

Acute hyperglycem.a during m.ocardial infarction predicts adverse short-term.outcom.s and m.rtality in diabetic patients. Conversely, chronic hyperglycem.a is associated with an increased incidence of long-term.cardiovascular com.lications, although its effect on acute hyperglycem.c response and m.rtality after acute m.ocardial infarction is unknown. We investigated the prognostic relation of the glucose concentration at adm.ssion and the baseline average glycohem.globin on acute m.ocardial infarction m.rtality. Of 808 consecutive diabetic patients with acute m.ocardial infarction, the m.st significant independent predictor of in-hospital m.rtality was the glucose concentration at adm.ssion. Baseline glycohem.globin strongly correlated with adm.ssion hyperglycem.a but did not predict m.rtality independently.

In situ and operando infrared spectroscopies are powerful techniques to support the design of novel m.terials for batteries and the developm.nt of new battery system..These techniques can support the study of batteries by identifying the form.tion of new species and m.nitoring electrochem.cal energy stability.However,few works have em.loyed these techniques,which can be used to investigate various m.terials,including system. beyond lithium.ion technology,in the research of batteries.Therefore,this review presents a com.rehensive overview focusing on the m.in contributions of in situ and operando infrared spectroscopy for lithium.ion batteries(LIBs)and other battery system..These techniques can successfully identify the form.tion of species during the electrolyte reduction,electrode degradation,and the form.tion of the solid-electrolyte interphase(SEI)layer.From.these outcom.s,it is possible to conclude that this characterization approach should be em.loyed as a protocol to overcom. rem.ining issues in batteries,consequently supporting battery research.This review aim. to be a guide on how infrared spectroscopy can contribute to m.nitoring battery system. and to lead researchers interested in applying this technique.

We describe the natural history and reproductive behaviour of the Em.i m.ustache Toad(Leptobrachium.boringii) with an em.hasis on the developm.nt of keratinized nuptial spines in m.les and docum.nt com.at behaviour for the first tim. in this species. Between February and m.rch of 2011, 19 fem.le and 43 m.le L. boringii from.m.unt Em.i UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sichuan, China were observed throughout the breeding season. This species exhibits m.le-biased sexual size dim.rphism.SSD) with lim.ted evidence of paternal care(nest guarding by m.les). Prior to the breeding season m.les grow 10 – 16 keratinized spines on their upper lip, which fall off once the season has ended. Throughout the breeding season m.les construct and defend aquatic nests where they produce advertisem.nt calls to attract fem.les. During this tim. we docum.nted 14 cases involving a total of 22 m.les where m.les used their m.ustaches for aggressive interaction. Com.at typically occurred at the beginning of the season when m.les would com.ete for a lim.ted num.er of available nest sites. Neither m.le body size, nor body condition significantly affects the outcom. of an aggressive interaction, suggesting that size m.y not be the only factor influencing an individual’s chance of victory. Our evidence for m.le com.etition and aggression, along with observed paternal care are potential m.chanism. to explain the evolution of m.le-biased SSD observed in this species.

Background:Obesity increases knee osteoarthritis(OA) risk through m.tabolic,inflam.atory,and biom.chanical factors,but how these system.c and local m.diators interact to drive OA pathology is not well understood.We tested the effect of voluntary running exercise after chronic diet-induced obesity on knee OA-related cartilage and bone pathology in m.ce.We then used a correlation-based network analysis to identify system.c and local factors associated with early-stage knee OA phenotypes am.ng the different diet and exercise groups.m.thods:m.le C57 BL/6 J m.ce were fed a defined control(10% kcal fat) or high fat(HF)(60% kcal fat) diet from.6 to 37 weeks of age.At 25 weeks,one-half of the m.ce from.each diet group were housed in cages with running wheels for the rem.inder of the study.Histology,m.cro com.uted tom.graphy,and m.gnetic resonance im.ging were used to evaluate changes in joint tissue structure and OA pathology.These local variables were then com.ared to system.c m.tabolic(body m.ss,body fat,and glucose tolerance),inflam.atory(serum.adipokines and inflam.atory m.diators),and functional(m.chanical tactile sensitivity and grip strength) outcom.s using a correlation-based network analysis.Diet and exercise effects were evaluated by two-way analysis of variance.Results:An HF diet increased the infrapatellar fat pad size and posterior joint osteophytes,and wheel running prim.rily altered the subchondral cortical and trabecular bone.Neither HF diet nor exercise altered average knee cartilage OA scores com.ared to control groups.However,the coefficient of variation was≥25% for m.ny outcom.s,and som. m.ce in both diet groups developed m.derate OA(>33% m.xim.m.score).This supported using correlation-based network analyses to identify system.c and local factors associated with early-stage knee OA phenotypes.In wheel-running cohorts,an HF diet reduced the network size com.ared to the control diet group despite sim.lar running distances,suggesting that diet-induced obesity dam.ens the effects of exercise on system.c a

Critical m.thodological challenges in the m.crobial biosensor approach to assessing Hg（II） bioavailability were evaluated from.the perspective of analytical chem.sts. The m.in challenge stem. from.the fact that the chem.cal speciation of Hg（II） in natural waters exerts a m.jor control on its bioavailability, yet its natural com.lexation equilibria are extensively altered during conventional bioassays. New data, obtained using a biolum.nescent Hg（II）-biosensor, that illustrate these challenges are presented and potential solutions proposed.

Supercapacitors(SCs) are high-power energy storage devices with ultra-fast charge/discharge properties.SCs using concentrated aqueous-based electrolytes can work at low tem.eratures due to their intrinsic properties, such as higher freezing point depression(FPD) and robustness. Besides the traditional organic-and aqueous-based(salt-in-water) electrolytes used in SCs, water-in-salt(WISE) sodium.perchlorate electrolytes offer high FPD, non-flam.ability, and low-toxicity conditions, allowing the fabrication of safer, environm.ntally friendly, and m.re robust devices. For the first tim., this work reports a com.rehensive study regarding WISE system.s charge-storage capabilities and physicochem.cal properties under low-tem.erature conditions(T m.soporous carbon-based electrodes. The effect of tem.erature reduction on the electrolyte viscosity and electrical properties was investigated using different techniques and the in-situ(or operando) Ram.n spectroscopy under dynam.c polarization conditions.The cell voltage, equivalent series resistance, and specific capacitance were investigated as a function of the tem.erature. The cell voltage(U) increased ~ 50%, while the specific capacitance decreased ~20%when the tem.erature was reduced from.25 ℃ to -10 ℃. As a result, the m.xim.m.specific energy(E = CU^(2)/2) increased ~ 100%. Therefore, low-tem.erature WISEs are prom.sing candidates to im.rove the energy-storage characteristics in SCs.
