Decrease of memory retention in a parasitic wasp： an effect of host manipulation by Wolbachia？

Several factors, such as cold exposure, aging, the number of experiences and viral infection, have been shown to affect learning ability in different organisms. Wol- bachia has been found worldwide as an arthropod parasite/mutualist symbiont in a wide range of species, including insects. Differing effects have been identified on physiology and behavior by Wolbachia. However, the effect of Wolbachia infection on the learning ability of their host had never previously been studied. The current study carried out to compare learning ability and memory duration in 2 strains of the parasitoid Trichogramma brassicae： 1 uninfected and I infected by Wolbachia. Both strains were able to associate the novel odors with the reward of an oviposition into a host egg. However, the percentage of females that responded to the experimental design and displayed an ability to learn in these conditions was higher in the uninfected strain. Memory duration was longer in uninfected wasps （23.8 and 21.4 h after conditioning with peppermint and lemon, respectively） than in infected wasps （18.9 and 16.2 h after conditioning with peppermint and lemon, respec- tively）. Memory retention increased in response to the number of conditioning sessions in both strains, but memory retention was always shorter in the infected wasps than in the uninfected ones. Wolbachia infection may select for reduced memory retention because shorter memory induces infected wasps to disperse in new environments and avoid compe- tition with uninfected wasps by forgetting cues related to previously visited environments, thus increasing transmission of Wolbachia in new environments.

Nanomagnetic Organogel Based on Dodecyl Methacrylate for Absorption and Removal of Organic Solvents

A novel nanomagnetic organogel was synthesized by in situ emulsion polymerization-crosslinking method using dodecyl methacrylate(DDMA) and styrene(St) as monomers, divinylbenzene(DVB) as a crosslinking agent, azobisisobutyronitrile(AIBN) as an initiator, and Fe_3O_4 as a nanomagnetic particle. Modification of the network was carried out by inclusion of the multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNT) into the organogel matrix. The structure of the nanocomposite was characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, SEM,TEM, TGA/DTG, VSM, and BET analysis. The effects of various parameters such as the amount of crosslinker, initiator, Fe_3O_4, and reaction time as well as monomer ratio on the oil absorption of the organogel were studied. The synthesized organogel can absorb about35.5, 22.1, 29.86, 14.58, 17.6, 15.3, and 13.7 g·g^(-1) of CHCl_3, toluene, CH_2Cl_2, hexane, crude oil, gasoline, and diesel oil, under the optimized polymerization conditions, respectively. The nanocomposite organogels can be easily separated by a magnetic field after absorption of organic solvents.

Neurocysticercosis in Iran: An Unexpected Case and Literature Review

Neurocysticercosis is a significant public health issue worldwide. Even though cysticercosis was once thought to have been eradicated in the United States, it is currently a growing public health problem in the United States, and immigrants from endemic areas are at the highest risk of acquiring this disease. In Iran, there was no report from this worrisome infection. The clinical presentation of neurocysticercosis is variable and vague. In this article, we will explain a case of neurocysticercosis encountered in the Shohada Hospital pathology department, and then we will review neurologic and radiologic symptoms, laboratory and pathologic findings, as well as medication for treatment, briefly.

Analysis of Thermal Behavior of High Frequency Transformers Using Finite Element Method

High frequency transformer is used in many applications among the Switch Mode Power Supply (SMPS), high voltage pulse power and etc can be mentioned. Regarding that the core of these transformers is often the ferrite core;their functions partly depend on this core characteristic. One of the characteristics of the ferrite core is thermal behavior that should be paid attention to because it affects the transformer function and causes heat generation. In this paper, a typical high frequency transformer with ferrite core is designed and simulated in ANSYS software. Temperature rise due to winding current (Joule-heat) is considered as heat generation source for thermal behavior analysis of the transformer. In this simulation, the temperature rise and heat distribution are studied and the effects of parameters such as flux density, winding loss value, using a fan to cool the winding and core and thermal conductivity are investigated.

BACKGROUND There are no consistent results between previous studies for an independent association between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and cardiovascular disease(CVD)*** To determine if there is an independent association between NAFLD and CVD *** In the present study,valid outcome data of 4808 subjects were available for phase 2 of our cohort *** subjects had been followed up for seven years from phase 1,beginning in 2009-2010 to phase 2 during *** and multiple Cox proportional models were used to determine the association between NAFLD in the primary phase of the cohort and subsequent fatal and non-fatal CVD events during *** The incidence of non-fatal CVD events in males with NAFLD was significantly higher(P=0.004)than in males without NAFLD.A positive association was demonstrated between NAFLD and non-fatal CVD events in males(Hazard ratio=1.606;95%CI:1.166-2.212;P=0.004)by the simple Cox proportional hazard model,but no independent association was detected between these in the multiple Cox *** No independent association was detected between NAFLD and *** is likely that diabetes mellitus and age may be the principle mediators in this regard.
