Ten different treatments viz. T0 = Control, T1 = Micronutrients (ZnSO4 + Borax), T2 = Rovral 50 WP + Micronutrients, T3 = Dithane M-45 + Micronutrients, T4 = Ridomil Gold + Micronutrients, T5 = Cupravit + Micronutrients, T6 = Rovral 50 WP, T7 = Dithane M-45, T8 = Ridomil Gold and T9 = Cupravit were evaluated against the purple blotch complex disease of onion caused by Alternaria porri and Stemphylium vesicarium in field condition for bulb yield. In lab condition, all the tested chemical fungicides (Rovral 50 WP, Dithane M-45, Ridomil Gold MZ-72 and Cupravit 50 WP) significantly reduced mycelial growth of both pathogens. Among the fungicides, Rovral 50 WP @ 0.2% reduced the highest radial mycelial growth followed by Dithane M-45 @ 0.45% and Ridomil Gold MZ-72 @ 0.2% compared to control. In field experiment, application of Rovral 50 WP @ 0.2% along with micronutrients showed significant effect in reducing disease incidence and severity which significantly increased bulb yield and yield contributing characters.

This study was conducted to identify a cheap and suitable culture medium for the mycelial growth and sporulation of Sternphylium vesicarium and to determine the cultural and morphological variability of this pathogen. A total of 24 isolates of S. vesicarium collected from eight different onion growing areas were characterized in terms of cultural and morphological aspects. Front colony colors were greenish brown to dirty white, deep grey to whitish, light grey to whitish, deep greenish white, light grey and dirty white to greenish. Reverse colony colors were brown, deep brown and light brown. Colony shapes were circular and irregular with umbonate, raised and flat type colony elevation. Colony textures were cottony, fluffy and velvety with entire, undulate and filiform type colony margin. Among the culture media, V-7 juice agar found to be the most suitable culture media for mycclial growth of S. vesicarium. The sporulation of the fungus was remarkably influenced by V-7 juice mixed with potato dextrose agar （PDA） media, this media exhibited the highest sporulation （87.76-169.0/mm^2） of S. vesicariumin comparison with other media. The minimum days （28 d to 31 d） for conidial production were observed on V-7 juice agar medium. The length of conidia varied from 14.6 μm to 30.6 μm. The maximum mean length of conidia was 29.97 μm found in isolate DSSA, while the minimum mean length 17.36 μm was found in isolate MSMM 02. The breadth of conidia ranged from 4.7 μm to 15.7μm. The maximum mean breadth of conidia was 12.55 μm found in the isolate DSSA, while the minimum mean breadth 9.760 μm was found in the isolate CCKH 02. The horizontal septation varied from l to 3 and the longitudinal septation varied from 0 to 4.

Narail Sadar Upazilla is a major agricultural productive region of Narail District, Bangladesh. The crop production here significantly depends on the Chitra River water for irrigation. The present study was undertaken with an aim to evaluate the usability of this river water for irrigation purpose during pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon. Sampling was conducted three times in each season both in high tide and low tide. The collected samples were analyzed for some physicochemical parameters including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solid (TDS), major cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+) and major anions (HCO3?, PO43?, SO42?, Cl? and NO3?). The calculated chemical indices’ values for the collected water samples during pre-monsoon indicate that this river water is chemically suitable for irrigation during pre-monsoon with respect to sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), residual sodium carbonate (RSC) and permeability index (PI). The values of all chemical indices declare this river water fitness for use in irrigation both in monsoon and post-monsoon. According to Wilcox diagram, all of the water samples irrespective of tide and sampling stations fall within “permissible to doubtful” category during pre-monsoon while the water samples collected in both tide from all stations fall within “excellent to good” category during monsoon and post-monsoon. The United States Salinity Laboratory (USSL) diagram certifies this river water as C1-S1 (low salinity along with low sodium level) type during monsoon and post-monsoon which makes the river water suitable for use in irrigation in these two seasons while the water is mostly C3-S1, C3-S2 and C3-S3 (high salinity along with low to high sodium level) type in pre-monsoon which makes the river water restricted for use in irrigation in this season.

Planting material BARI mungbean-5 and two phytochemicals viz. Imitaf, active ingredient imidacloprid and ACmix, active ingredient chloropyriphos (50%) + Cypermethrin (5%) were used in this experiment. In case of Imitaf, the lowest percent disease incidence (10.12% per plant and 3.51% per plot) and severity (7.21%) were recorded in four times spray (T4) at 70 DAS. The highest percent disease incidence (36.50% per plant and 11.37% per plot) and severity (23.33%) were recorded in no spray (T0) at 70 DAS. In case of ACmix, the lowest percent disease incidence (12.21% per plant and 4.21% per plot) and severity (7.53%) were recorded in four times spray (T4) at 70 DAS. The highest percent disease incidence (36.49% per plant and 11.37% per plot) and severity (36.67%) was recorded in T0 at 70 DAS. The highest number of flower, no of pod and yield was found in four times spray (T4) that was higher in Imitaf than ACmix. The highest chlorophyll content was recorded in four times spray (T4) for Imitaf (49.62 μmol·m-2·s-1) and ACmix (56.80 μmol·m-2·s-1), and the lowest chlorophyll content was recorded in T0 for Imitaf (42.01 μmol·m-2·s-1) and ACmix (48.34 μmol·m-2·s-1). However from the results of this experiment it was revealed that Imitaf gave the better performance to control the insect vector (Whitefly) of MYMV with four times spray.

Assessment of Groundwater Quality in a Tidal River Basin of the Ganges Delta in Bangladesh

At Shailmari River basin, located in the central Ganges Delta and the southwestern coastal Bangladesh, groundwater is the only potable source for water supply due to incompatible surface water sources. However, salinity degradation along with arsenic and iron contamination poses a serious health threat to the basin community. Considering this, an investigation was carried out along both banks of the river to assess groundwater vulnerability and its quality for drinking by conducting multi-seasonal water sampling campaigns from 20 domestic wells and analyses (both in-situ and laboratory) for several physico-chemical (pH, EC, TDS and major ions) and biological (coliforms) parameters. The results show slightly alkaline groundwater in the study area with largely variable chemical composition, i.e. EC varies from around 1900 to 2700 μS/cm. The abundance of major ions indicates as Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+ for cations and ?> Cl- > ?> ?> ?for anions. As per the Canadian water quality index (CCMEWQI), almost all groundwater samples concentrate in the marginal category meaning that groundwater is frequently threatened. Besides, it is not fully safe for drinking as revealed from comparison of geochemical data with national and WHO water quality standards.

AIM： To compare the outcomes of endoscopic mucosal resection （EMR） and endoscopic submucosal dissection （ESD） of colorectal ***： An electronic systematic literature search of four computerized databases was performed in July 2014 identifying studies reporting the outcomes of colorectal ESD and EMR. The primary outcome measures were en-bloc resection rate, endoscopic clearance rate and lesion recurrence rate of the patients followed up. The secondary outcome was the complication rate （including bleeding, perforation and surgery post EMR or ESD rate）. Statistical pooling and random effects modelling of the studies calculating risk difference, heterogeneity and assessment of bias and quality were ***： Six observational studies reporting the outcomes of 1324 procedures were included. The en-bloc resection rate was 50% higher in the ESD group than in the EMR group （95%CI： 0.17-0.83, P 〈 0.0001, I2 = 99.7%）. Endoscopic clearance rates were also signifcantly higher in the ESD group （95%CI： -0.06-0.02, P 〈 0.0001, I2 = 92.5%）. The perforation rate was 7% higher in the ESD group than the EMR group （95%CI： 0.05-0.09, P 〉 0.05, I2 = 41.1%） and the rate of recurrence was 50% higher in the EMR group than in the ESD group （95%CI： 0.20-0.79, P 〈 0.001, I2 = 99.5%）. Heterogeneity remained consistent when subgroup analysis of high quality studies was performed （with the exception of piecemeal resection rate）, and overall effect sizes remained unchanged for all ***： ESD demonstrates higher en-bloc resection rates and lower recurrence rates compared to colorectal EMR. Differences in outcomes may beneft from increased assessment through well-designed comparative studies.

Surface water has become one of the most vulnerable resources on the earth due to deterioration of its quality from diverse sources of pollution. Understanding of the spatiotemporal distribution of pollutants and identification of the sources in the river systems is a prerequisite for the protection and sustainable utilization of the water resources. Multivariate statistical techniques such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Factor Analysis (FA) were applied in this study to investigate the temporal and spatial variations of water quality and appoint the major factors of pollution in the Shailmari River system. Water quality data for 14 physicochemical parameters from 11 monitoring sites over the year of 2014 in three sampling seasons were collected and analyzed for this study. Kruskal-Wallis test showed significant (p arameters of the river water. Principal component analysis (PCA) allowed extracting the contributing parameters affecting the seasonal water quality in the river system. Scatter plots of the PCs showed the tidal and spatial variation within river system and identified parameters controlling the behavior in each case. Factor analysis (FA) further reduced the data and extracted factors which are significantly responsible for water quality variation in the river. The results indicate that the parameters controlling the water quality in different seasons are related with salinity, anthropogenic pollution (sewage disposal, effluents) and agricultural runoff in pre-monsoon;precipitation induced surface runoff in monsoon;and erosion, oxidation or organic pollution (point and non-point sources) in post-monsoon. Therefore, the study reveals the applicability and usefulness of the multivariate statistical methods in assessing water quality of river by identifying the potential environmental factors controlling the water quality in different seasons which might help to better understand,

Water quality is the critical environmental determinant that influences the agricultural production and therefore, the economy that solely depends on its agricultural productions. Batiaghata Upazilla is one of the major crop productive areas of Khulna region and the agricultural production here largely depends on the natural water of the Shailmari River system around it. The present study was conducted to assess the suitability of this coastal river water for irrigational use. 66 water samples were collected during this study in three consecutive agricultural seasons, viz., pre-monsoon (22), monsoon (22) and post-monsoon (22) from 11 sampling stations within the river system considering the high (11) and ebb (11) tides for each station. Standard methods were followed throughout the study period for the collection of the samples and analysis of major physicochemical parameters (pH, EC, TDS, salinity, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Cl, HCO3, SO4, NO3 and PO4). Hydrocehmical characterization using Piper trilinear diagram shows that the water of the river system is Na-Cl dominated saline water type in pre-monsoon, whilst most of the samples of the river and the connected channel are characterized as fresh water of Ca-Mg-Na-HCO3 and Ca-Na-Mg-HCO3 types in monsoon and post-monsoon respectively. The calculated values of chemical indices like SAR, %Na, KI, PI and MH using the results of the analysed parameters indicate that the river water is chemically unsuitable for use in irrigation during pre-monsoon, while in the monsoon and post-monsoon the river water is within good to permissible limit for the use in the agricultural fields. However, high %Na, KI and MH values with high salinity of the channel water limit its use in agricultural applications in monsoon and post-monsoon. A rapid chromatographic method for the determination of six phenolic acids (chlorogenic, ferulic, gallic, p-coumaric, protocatechuic and vanillic acids) by ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC), was developed and applied for Brazilian tropical fruits mangaba (Hancornia speciosa Gomes) and umbu (Spondias tuberosa Arruda Camara). A multivariate statistical experimental design was employed to optimize analytical conditions (solvent A, solvent B concentrations and flow rates). Samples were cleaned-up by solid-phase extraction (SPE) with different solvents (methanol and acetone) employing SPE cartridges (amine and octadecyl-silane). The method using dihydrogen potassium phosphate 5 mmoL as solvent A and 8% acetonitrile as solvent B presented limits of detection varying from 14 to 94 ***, limits of quantification from 39 to 277 ***-1 with 2 μL of injection volume while total run time for all six compounds was only 9.6 minutes. Higher recovery was obtained by extraction with methanol-acetone of 69.51% to 72.59% for protocatechuic acid and 69.58% to 126.31% for the chlorogenic acid. The concentrations of chlorogenic, p-coumaric and ferulic acids in mangaba extracts were 113.4, 32.1 and 1.5 μg.g-1, respectively while concentrations of chlorogenic, protocatechuic, gallic, vanillic, ferulic and p-coumaric acids present in umbu fruit were 118.9, 141.3, 3.5, 2.5, 2.2 and 1.8 μg.g-1, respectively.
