Rapid evaluation of arsenic contamination in paddy soils using field portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry

Arsenic（As） in paddy fields is deteriorating food security and human health through rice ingestion. Rice is the dominant food source of arsenic exposure to half of the world’s population. Therefore, an in situ effective method for As risk evaluation in paddy soil is strongly needed to avoid As exposure through rice ingestion. Herein, we developed a rapid analytical methodology for determination of As in plant tissues using field portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry（FP-XRF）. This method was applied to rice roots in order to evaluate the As contamination in paddy soils. The results showed that rice roots with iron plaques were superior to rhizosphere soils for generating FP-XRF signals, especially for field sites with As concentrations lower than the soil detection limit of FP-XRF（30.0 mg/kg）.Moreover, the strong linear relationships of As concentrations between the rice roots and corresponding leaves and grains proved that the rice root, rather than the soil, is a better predictor of As concentrations in rice grains. The research provides an efficient As monitoring method for As contaminated paddy fields by using wetland plant roots with iron plaques and XRF-based analytical techniques.

Anxiety symptoms in patients with Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome:a cross-sectional study

Background:As a congenital malformation that results in infertility and an inability to have vaginal intercourse,Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser(MRKH)syndrome places a considerable psychological burden on patients,which results in anxiety symptoms.However,only single case studies or a few small to medium-sized cross-sectional studies were identified to focus on anxiety symptoms in MRKH patients.Thus,the aim of this study was to explore the status of anxiety symptoms and the related factors in patients with MRKH syndrome.Methods:This cross-sectional study involving 141 patients with MRKH syndrome and 178 healthy women was conducted from January 2018 to December 2018.All participants were required to complete a demographic questionnaire and the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale(GAD-7),Patient Health Questionnaire-9,Eysenck Personality Questionnaire-Revised,Short Scale for Chinese,and Chinese Version of the Female Sexual Function Index.The main outcome was the anxiety symptoms measured by the GAD-7.Main outcome was compared between the MRKH syndrome group and the healthy control group.Then,we explored the related factors by comparing patients with and without anxiety symptoms.Results:Of the respondents,24.1%experienced moderate to severe anxiety symptoms.Patients with MRKH syndrome manifested more severe anxiety symptoms than healthy women.Negative self-evaluation of femininity(odds ratio[OR]2.706,95%confidence interval[CI]1.010-7.247),neurotic personality traits(OR 1.100,95%CI 1.029-1.175),and coexisting depressive symptoms(OR 4.422,95%CI 1.498-13.049)were more prevalent in anxious patients.Conclusion:The findings stress the importance of anxiety symptom screening in MRKH patients and identify patients at risk of anxiety symptoms,providing a possible basis for future intervention.

Advantage of surgical intensive care unit(SICU)predominant by cardiothoracic surgeons in multiple trauma management in a primary hospital

Purpose It is a challenge for the primary hospitals to manage multiple trauma patients.In this article,we explored the advantage of establishing a surgical intensive care unit(SICU)predominant by cardiothoracic surgeons in the early management of multiple trauma.Methods This was a retrospective study and patients with multiple trauma in our hospital were collected and divided into two groups,based on time period and treat modes:group A(retrospective observation group)where patients were treated with the traditional treatment mode from January 2017 to December 2017 and group B(study group)where patients were treated in the SICU predominant by cardiothoracic surgeons from January 2018 to December 2018.Clinical data including demographics,injury severity score(ISS),causes of injury,time intervals from reception to entering SICU or operating room and mortality three days after injuries were collected.Data were analyzed by SPSS 20.0 software.Categorical variables were presented as number and/or frequency and continuous variables as mean±SD.Results Altogether 406 patients were included in this study,including 217 patients in group A and 189 patients in group B.General data between the two groups revealed no significant difference:mean age(years)(35.51±12.97 vs.33.62±13.61,p=0.631),gender distribution(mean/female,130/87 vs.116/73,p=0.589)and ISS(15.92±7.95 vs.16.16±6.89,p=0.698).Fall from height were the dominant mechanism of injury,with 135 cases in group A(71.4%)and 121 cases in group B(55.8%),followed by traffic accidents.Injury mechanism showed no significant differences between two groups(p=1.256).Introduction of the SICU significantly improved the care of trauma patients,regarding speed and mortality.Time intervals between reception and entering SICU or operating room was(108.23±6.72)min and(45.67±7.96)min in group A and B,respectively(p=0.001).Mortality three days after injuries was 13.89%and 5.53%in group A and B,respectively(p=0.005).Conclusion Establishing a SICU predominant by cardiothoracic surgeons can redu

Hydrothermal and catalytic stability of UIO-66 MOFs with defective structures are critical aspects to be considered in their catalytic applications,especially under the conditions involving water,moisture and/or heat.Here,we report a facile strategy to introduce the macromolecular acid group to UIO-66 to improve the stability of the resulting UIO-66−PhSO3H MOF in aqueous phase catalysis.In detail,UIO-66−PhSO3H was obtained by grafting benzenesulfonic acid on the surface of the pristine UIO-66 to introduce the hydrophobicity,as well as the Brønsted acidity,then assessed using catalytic hydrolysis of cyclohexyl acetate(to cyclohexanol)in water.The introduction of hydrophobic molecules to UIO-66 could prevent the material from being attacked by hydroxyl polar molecules effectively,explaining its good structural stability during catalysis.UIO-66−PhSO3H promoted the conversion of cyclohexyl acetate at ca.87%,and its activity and textural properties were basically intact after the cyclic stability tests.The facile modification strategy can improve the hydrothermal stability of UIO-66 significantly,which can expand its catalytic applications in aqueous systems.

Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells and exercise restore motor function following spinal cord injury by activating PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway

Although many therapeutic interventions have shown promise in treating spinal cord injury, focusing on a single aspect of repair cannot achieve successful and functional regeneration in patients following spinal cord injury. In this study, we applied a combinatorial approach for treating spinal cord injury involving neuroprotection and rehabilitation, exploiting cell transplantation and functional sensorimotor training to promote nerve regeneration and functional recovery. Here, we used a mouse model of thoracic contusive spinal cord injury to investigate whether the combination of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation and exercise training has a synergistic effect on functional restoration. Locomotor function was evaluated by the Basso Mouse Scale, horizontal ladder test, and footprint analysis. Magnetic resonance imaging, histological examination, transmission electron microscopy observation, immunofluorescence staining, and western blotting were performed 8 weeks after spinal cord injury to further explore the potential mechanism behind the synergistic repair effect. In vivo, the combination of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation and exercise showed a better therapeutic effect on motor function than the single treatments. Further investigations revealed that the combination of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation and exercise markedly reduced fibrotic scar tissue, protected neurons, and promoted axon and myelin protection. Additionally, the synergistic effects of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation and exercise on spinal cord injury recovery occurred via the PI3 K/AKT/mTOR pathway. In vitro, experimental evidence from the PC12 cell line and primary cortical neuron culture also demonstrated that blocking of the PI3 K/AKT/mTOR pathway would aggravate neuronal damage. Thus, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation combined with exercise training can effectively restore motor function after spinal cord injury by activating the PI3 K/AKT/mTOR pathway.

目的:了解青少年自评体重对其心理健康的影响,为制定青少年心理健康防治策略和措施提供理论依据。方法:利用2014—2015年中国教育追踪调查(China Education panel Survey,CEPS)数据,采用多因素OLS回归模型和倾向值匹配法(PSM)进行分析。结果:OLS回归结果显示,自评体重肥胖对青少年的心理健康具有负向影响(β=-0.094,P0.05)。除了性别外,日均睡眠时长、自评健康、最近一年内患病情况、与父母的关系、家庭经济条件、学校活动参与度以及对学校的亲切感均显著影响青少年的心理健康水平(P0.05)。结论:青少年自评体重状况显著影响其心理健康,应引导青少年树立正确的审美和认知价值观,鼓励青少年养成健康的身材管理理念,推动健康中国行动。

Evaluation of hydraulic fracturing of horizontal wells in tight reservoirs based on the deep neural network with physical constraints

Accurate diagnosis of fracture geometry and conductivity is of great challenge due to the complex morphology of volumetric fracture network. In this study, a DNN (deep neural network) model was proposed to predict fracture parameters for the evaluation of the fracturing effects. Field experience and the law of fracture volume conservation were incorporated as physical constraints to improve the prediction accuracy due to small amount of data. A combined neural network was adopted to input both static geological and dynamic fracturing data. The structure of the DNN was optimized and the model was validated through k-fold cross-validation. Results indicate that this DNN model is capable of predicting the fracture parameters accurately with a low relative error of under 10% and good generalization ability. The adoptions of the combined neural network, physical constraints, and k-fold cross-validation improve the model performance. Specifically, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of the model decreases by 71.9% and 56% respectively with the combined neural network as the input model and the consideration of physical constraints. The mean square error (MRE) of fracture parameters reduces by 75% because the k-fold cross-validation improves the rationality of data set dividing. The model based on the DNN with physical constraints proposed in this study provides foundations for the optimization of fracturing design and improves the efficiency of fracture diagnosis in tight oil and gas reservoirs.

Three new pyrrole alkaloids albifipyrrols A-C(1-3),were isolated from the endophytic fungus Albifimbria viridis col-lected from the Chinese medicinal plant.Their structures were elucidated by extensive NMR and HRESIMS spectro-metric analyses.All compounds were evaluated for immunosuppressive activity.Fortunately,compound 2 exhibits certain inhibition specifically against the LPS-induced proliferation of B lymphocyte cells with IC50 value 16.16μM.

Heterogeneous sea-level rises along coastal zones and small islands

Coastal zones and many small islands are highly susceptible to sea-level rise(SLR). Coastal zones have a large exposed population and integrated high-value assets, and islands provide diverse ecosystem services to millions of people worldwide. The coastal zones and small islands affected by SLR are likely to suffer from submergence, flooding and erosion in the future. However, very few studies have addressed the heterogeneity in SLR changes and the potential risk to coastal zones and small islands. Here we used the mean sea level(MSL) derived from satellite altimetry data to analyse the trends and accelerations of SLRs along global coastal zones and small islands. We found that except for the Antarctic coastal zone, the annual MSL within 50 km of the coasts presented an increasing trend of 3.09 ± 0.13 mm a^-1 but a decreasing acceleration of -0.02 ± 0.02 mm a^-2 from 1993 to 2017. The highest coastal MSL trend of3.85 ± 0.60 mm a^-1 appeared in Oceania, and the lowest trend of 2.32 ± 0.37 mm a^-1 occured in North America. Africa, North America and South America showed acceleration trends, and Eurasia, Australia and Oceania had deceleration trends. Further, MSLs around global small islands reflected an increasing trend with a rate of 3.01 ± 0.16 mm a^-1 but a negative acceleration of -0.02 ± 0.02 mm a^-2. Regional heterogeneity in the trends and accelerations of MSLs along the coasts and small islands suggests that stakeholders should take discriminating precautions to cope with future disadvantageous impacts of the SLR.

Lead(Pb)pollution is one of the most widespread and harmful environmental problems worldwide.Determination of changes in soil properties and microbial functional diversity due to land use is needed to establish a basis for remediation of soil pollution.This study aimed to investigate soils contaminated by Pb from different sources and to analyze the functional diversity and metabolism of soil microbial communities using Biolog technology.Pb pollution(>300 mg kg-1)significantly influenced the diversity and metabolic functions of soil microbial communities.Specifically,Pb contamination significantly reduced soil microbial biomass carbon(C)and nitrogen(N)levels and catalase activity while increasing invertase activity.Furthermore,Biolog EcoPlate assays revealed that Pb pollution reduced the general activities of soil microorganisms,suppressing their ability to utilize C sources.In Pb-contaminated areas lacking vegetation cover,Shannon,Simpson,and McIntosh diversity indices of soil microorganisms were significantly reduced.The microbial diversity and biomass C and N levels were affected by land use and soil properties,respectively,whereas soil enzyme activity was primarily affected by the interaction between land use and soil properties.Our results provide a reference and a theoretical basis for developing soil quality evaluation and remediation strategies.
