Exploring the mechanisms of calcium carbonate deposition on various substrates with implications for effective anti-scaling material selection

The unexpected scaling phenomena have resulted in significant damages to the oil and gas industries,leading to issues such as heat exchanger failures and pipeline *** is of practical and fundamental importance to understand the scaling mechanisms and develop efficient anti-scaling ***,the underlying surface interaction mechanisms of scalants(e.g.,calcite)with various substrates are still not fully *** this work,the colloidal probe atomic force microscopy(AFM)technique has been applied to directly quantify the surface forces between calcite particles and different metallic substrates,including carbon steel(CR1018),low alloy steel(4140),stainless steel(SS304)and tungsten carbide,under different water chemistries(i.e.,salinity and pH).Measured force profiles revealed that the attractive van der Waals(VDW)interaction contributed to the attachment of the calcium carbonate particles on substrate surfaces,while the repulsive electric double layer(EDL)interactions could inhibit the attachment *** salinity and acidic p H conditions of aqueous solutions could weaken the EDL repulsion and promote the attachment *** adhesion of calcite particles with CR1018 and4140 substrates was much stronger than that with SS304 and tungsten carbide *** bulk scaling tests in aqueous solutions from an industrial oil production process showed that much more severe scaling behaviors of calcite was detected on CR1018 and 4140 than those on SS304 and tungsten carbide,which agreed with surface force measurement ***,high salinity and acidic p H can significantly enhance the scaling *** work provides fundamental insights into the scaling mechanisms of calcite at the nanoscale with practical implications for the selection of suitable antiscaling materials in petroleum industries.

Lipopolysaccharide Inhibits FI-RSV Vaccine-enhanced Inflammation Through Regulating Th Responses

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is the primary cause of respiratory disease in infants. The formalin-inactivated RSV (FI-RSV) vaccine resulted in an enhanced respiratory disease (ERD) in infants upon natural RSV infection, which is a major obstacle for development of safe and efficacious vaccines. Excessive and uncontrolled Th immune responses could be involved in the ERD. Agonists of TLRs are used as adjuvants to guide the type of immune response induced by vaccines. We evaluated the impact of lipopolysaccharide (LPS), the agonist of TLR4, on ERD as the adjuvant of FI-RSV. The results showed that LPS remarkably inhibited FI-RSV-enhanced lung inflammation, mucus production, airway inflammatory cell infiltration, and inflammatory cytokines following RSV challenge. Interestingly, LPS inhibited both Th2 and Th17 type cytokines in lungs of FI-RSV-immunized mice following RSV challenge, without an increase in the Thl type cytokines, suggesting a controlled immune response. In contrast, Pam3Cys and Poly(I:C), the agonist of TLR1/2 or TLR3, partly inhibited FI-RSV-enhanced lung inflammation. Pam3Cys inhibited Th17 type cytokine IL-17, but promoted both Th1 and Th2 type cytokines. Poly(I:C) inhibited Th2 and Th 17 type cytokines, but promoted Th1 type cytokines. In addition, LPS promoted IgG and IgG2a antibody production, which might provide protection from RSV challenge. These results suggest that LPS inhibits ERD without impairment in antibody production and protection, and the mechanism appears to be related with regulation of Th responses induced by FI-RSV.

A new rabbit model of implant-related biofilm infection： development and evaluation

This study is to establish a rabbit model for human prosthetic joint infection and biofiim formation. Thirty-two healthy adult rabbits were randomly divided into four groups and implanted with stainless steel screws and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene （UHMWPE） washers in the non-articular surface of the femoral lateral condyle of the right hind knees. The rabbit knee joints were inoculated with 1 mL saline containing 0, 102, 103, 104 CFU of Staphylococcus epidermidis （S. epidermidis） isolated from the patient with total knee arthroplasty （TKA） infection, respectively. On the 14th postoperative day, the UHMWPE washers from the optimal 103 CFU group were further examined. The SEM examination showed a typical biofilm construction that circular S. epidermidis were embedded in a mucous-like matrix. In addition, the LCSM examination showed that the biofilm consisted of the polysaccharide stained bright green fluorescence and S. epidermidis radiating red fluorescence. Thus, we successfully create a rabbit model for prosthetic joint infection and biofilm formation, which should be valuable for biofilm studies.

Identification of Novel Stress-responsive Transcription Factor Genes in Rice by cDNA Array Analysis

Numerous studies have shown that array of transcription factors has a role in regulating plant responses to environmental stresses. Only a small portion of them however, have been Identified or characterized. More than 2 300 putative transcription factors were predicted In the rice genome and more than half of them were supported by expressed sequences. With an attempt to Identify novel transcription factors involved in the stress responses, a cDNA array containing 753 putative rice transcription factors was generated to analyze the transcript profiles of these genes under drought and salinity stresses and absclsic acid treatment at seedling stage of rice. About 80% of these transcription factors showed detectable levels of transcript in seedling leaves. A total of 18 up-regulated transcription factors and 29 down-regulated transcription factors were detected with the folds of changes from 2.0 to 20.5 in at least one stress treatment. Most of these stress-responsive genes have not been reported and the expression patterns for five genes under stress conditions were further analyzed by RNA gel blot analysis. These novel stress-responsive transcription factors provide new opportunities to study the regulation of gene expression In plants under stress conditions.

Numerical simulation for volatile organic compound removal in rotating drum biofilter

Rotating drum biofilters (RDBs) could effectively remove volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from waste gas streams. A mathematical model was developed on the basis of mass transport and mass balance equations in an RDB,the two-film theory,and the Monod kinetics. This model took account of mass transfer and biodegradation of VOC in the gas-water-biofilm three-phase system in the biofilter,and could simulate variations of VOC removal efficiency with a changing specific surface area and porosity of the media due to the increasing of biofilm thickness in the biofilter. Toluene was used as a model VOC. This model was further simplified by introducing a coefficient of the gas velocity and ne-glecting the water phase due to the complexity of operating conditions. The equations for the biofilm phase,gas phase,and biofilm accumulation in this model were solved using collocation method,ana-lytic method,and the Runge-Kutta method separately. A computer program was written down as MATLAB to solve this model. Results of numerical solutions showed that toluene removal efficiency in the RDB increased and reached the maximum values of 97% on day 4 after the startup,and then de-creased and remained at 90% after 5 more days of operation. Toluene concentration was high at the outermost layer where more than 70% toluene was removed,and was low at the innermost layer where less than 10% toluene was removed. The dynamic removal efficiencies from this model correlated reasonably well with experimental results for toluene removal in a multi-layered RDB.

Pre-heating temperature induced flowability and wax deposition characteristics of crude oil adding wax inhibitors

This paper investigated the effects of pre-heating treatment temperatures(T_(pre))on the flowability and wax deposition characteristics of a typical waxy crude oil after adding wax *** is found that there is little difference in wax precipitation exothermic characteristics of crude oils at different T_(pre),as well as the wax crystal solubility coefficient in the temperature range of 25-30℃.For the undoped crude oil,the flowability after wax precipitation gets much improved and the wax deposition is alleviated as T_(pre)*** T_(pre)=50℃,the viscosity and wax deposition rate of crude oil adding wax inhibitors are higher than those of the undoped crude *** the T_(pre)increases to 60,70,and 80℃,the flowability of the doped crude oil are largely improved and the wax deposition is suppressed with the T_(pre)increase,but the wax content of wax deposit increases *** is speculated that,on the one hand,the T_(pre)increase helps the dispersion of asphaltenes into smaller sizes,which facilitates the co-crystallization with paraffin waxes and generates more aggregated wax crystal *** weakens the low-temperature gel structure and increases the solid concentration required for the crosslink to form the wax *** the other hand,the decrease in viscosity increases the diffusion rate of wax molecules and accelerates the aging of wax *** experimental results have important guiding significance for the pipeline transportation of doped crude oils.

We present an experimental method for in-situ observation of the lattice behavior of a single crystal silicon nanobelt during uniaxial tensile *** in-situ silicon nanobelt tensile testing device for transmission electron microscopy is *** behavior and lattice parameters of the nanobelt are studied using selected area electron diffraction.A statistical and least square methods are used for reducing the measurement errors of the lattice *** results suggest that the trends of the lattice parameters during the tensile test are in agreement with the increasing tensile stress in the silicon ***,the local strain calculated from lattice parameters and the average strain of the nanobelt are compared.

Effects of rhein on intestinal epithelial tight junction in IgA nephropathy

AIM: To investigate the effects of rhein on intestinal epithelial tight junction proteins in rats with IgA nephropathy (IgAN). METHODS: Twenty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups (7 per group): Control, IgAN, Rhein-treated, and Rheinprevented. Bovine serum albumin, lipopolysaccharide and CCl4 were used to establish the rat model of IgA nephropathy. The Rhein-treated group was given rhein from week 7 until the rats were sacrificed. The Rheinprevented group was given rhein from week 1. Animals were sacrificed at the end of week 10. We observed the changes in the intestinal epithelial tight junctions using transmission electron microscopy, and expression of intestinal epithelial tight junction proteins zona occludens protein (ZO)-1 and occludin by immunofluorescence using laser confocal microscopy. Changes in mRNA and protein expression of ZO-1 and occludin were measured by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting. The ratio of urinary lactulose/mannitol was measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for assessing the intestinal permeability. RESULTS: In the control group, the tight junctions lied between epithelial cells on the top of the outer side of the cell membrane, and appeared in dense dotted crystal structures, the neighboring cells were binded tightly with no significant gap, and the tight junction protein ZO-1 and occludin were evenly distributed in the intestinal epithelial cells at the top of the junction. Compared with the control group, in the IgAN group, the structure of the tight junction became obscured and the dotted crystal structures had disappeared; the fluorescence of ZO-1 and occludin was uneven and weaker (5.37 ± 1.27 vs 10.03 ± 1.96, P < 0.01; 4.23 ± 0.85 vs 12.35 ± 4.17, P < 0.01); the mRNA expression of ZO-1 and occludin decreased (0.42 ± 0.19 vs 0.92 ± 0.24, P < 0.01; 0.40 ± 0.15 vs 0.97 ± 0.25, P < 0.01); protein expression of ZO-1 and occludin was decreased (0.

Comparison of clinical characteristics in patients with coronavirus disease and influenza A in Guangzhou, China

BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare the epidemiological, clinical and laboratory characteristics between patients with coronavirus disease(COVID-19) and influenza A(H1N1), and to develop a differentiating model and a simple scoring ***: We retrospectively analyzed the data from patients with COVID-19 and H1N1. The logistic regression model based on clinical and laboratory characteristics was constructed to distinguish COVID-19 from H1N1. Scores were assigned to each of independent discrimination factors based on their odds ratios. The performance of the prediction model and scoring system was assessed. RESULTS: A total of 236 patients were recruited, including 20 COVID-19 patients and 216 H1N1 patients. Logistic regression revealed that age >34 years, temperature ≤37.5℃, no sputum or myalgia, lymphocyte ratio ≥20% and creatine kinase-myocardial band isoenzyme(CK-MB) >9.7 U/L were independent differentiating factors for COVID-19. The area under curves(AUCs) of the prediction model and scoring system in differentiating COVID-19 from H1N1 were 0.988 and 0.962, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: There are certain differences in clinical and laboratory features between patients with COVID-19 and H1N1. The simple scoring system may be a useful tool for the early identification of COVID-19 patients from H1N1 patients.
