Saeng-Kankunbi-Tang(生肝健脾汤) Protects Liver against Oxidative Damage through Activation of ERK/Nrf2 Pathway

Objective： To investigate the cytoprotective effects of Saeng-kankunbi-tang（生肝健脾汤, SKT）, a herbal prescription consisting of Artemisia capillaris and Alisma canaliculatum, and its underlying mechanism involved. Methods： In mice, blood biochemistry and histopathology were assessed in carbon tetrachloride（CCl4）-induced oxidative hepatic injury in vivo. The animal groups included vehicle-treated control, CCl4, SKT 500 mg/（kg·day） CCl4＋SKT 200 or 500 mg/（kg·day）. In Hep G2 cell, tert-butyl hydroperoxide（t BHP） induced severe oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in vitro. The cyto-protective effects of SKT were determined by 3-（4,5-dimethylthiazol）-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide（MTT） assay, fluorescence activated cell sorting analysis and western blotting. Results： The administration of SKT prevented liver damage induced by CCl4 in mice, by inhibition of hepatocyte degeneration and inflammatory cell infiltration as well as plasma parameters such as alanine aminotransferase（P〈0.01）. Moreover, treatment with t BHP induced hepatocyte death and cellular reactive oxygen species production in hepatocyte cell line. However, SKT pretreatment（30–300 μg/m L） reduced this cell death and oxidative stress（P〈0.01）. More importantly, SKT inhibited the ability of t BHP to induce changes in mitochondrial membrane transition in cell stained with rhodamine 123（P〈0.01）. Furthermore, treatment with SKT induced extracellular signal-regulated kinases-mediated nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2（Nrf2） activation as well as the expressions of heme oxygenase 1 and glutamate-cystein ligase catalytic, Nrf2 target genes. Conclusion： SKT has the ability to protect hepatocyte against oxidative stress and mitochondrial damage mediated by Nrf2 activation.

Meso-porous silicon-coated carbon nanotube as an anode for lithium-ion battery

Meso-porous Si-coated carbon nanotube （CNT） composite powders were prepared by combining a sol-gel method and the magnesiothermic reduction process. Meso-porous Si-coated CNT electrodes exhibit excellent cycle and rate performances as anodes in Li-ion batteries （LIBs）, which can be attributed to the efficient accommodation of volume change from meso-porous Si structure and the enhanced electrical conductivity from CNT core. This simple synthesis and subsequent reduction process provide a scalable route for the large-scale production of Si-C composite nanostructures, which can be utilized in a variety of applications, such as in photocatalysis, photoelectrochemical cells （PECs）, and LIBs.

Ex situ aging effect on sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) membrane:Hydration-dehydration cycling and hydrothermal treatment

Prolonged hydrothermal treatment for sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) membranes induces mechanical degradation and developing hydrophilic-hydrophobic phase separation, simultaneously. The enhanced phase separation provides incremental proton conductivity to the membranes, whereas mechanical degradation drastically reduces device stability. On this basis, we describe here the effects of two different ex situ aging processes on sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) membranes: hydrationdehydration cycling and prolonged hydrothermal treatment. Both aged membranes exhibited enhanced phase separation under the hydrated conditions, as characterized by small angle X-ray ***, when the aged membranes were dried again, the nanostructure of the membranes aged via the hydration-dehydration cycling was recoverable, whereas that of the membranes aged via prolonged hydrothermal treatment was irreversible. Furthermore, the two differently aged membranes showed clear differences in thermal, mechanical, and electrochemical properties. Finally, we implemented both aged membranes in fuel cell application. The sample aged via hydration-dehydration cycling maintained its improved cell performance, whereas the sample aged via hydrothermal treatment showed drastically reduced cell performance after durability test for 50 h.

SnO2@Co3O4 hollow nano-spheres for a Li-ion battery anode with extraordinary performance

SnO2@Co3O4 hollow nano-spheres have been prepared using the template-based sol-gel coating technique and their electrochemical performance as an anode for lithium-ion battery （LIB） was investigated. The size of synthesized hollow spheres was about 50 nm with the shell thickness of 7-8 nm. The fabricated SnO2@Co3O4 hollow nano-sphere electrode exhibited an extraordinary reversible capacity （962 mAh-g-1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA-g-1）, good cyclability, and high rate capability, which was attributed to the Co-enhanced reversibility of the Li20 reduction reaction during cycling.

Interleukin-24 is correlated with differentiation and lymph node numbers in rectal cancer

AIM:To assess the significance of interleukin(IL)-24 and vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)expression in lymph-node-positive rectal cancer. METHODS:Between 1998 and 2005,90 rectal adenocarcinoma patients with lymph node involvement were *** patients received radical surgery and postoperative pelvic chemoradiotherapy of 50.4-54.0 *** of 5-fluorouracil and leucovorin or levamisole was given intravenously during the first and last week of radiotherapy,and then monthly for about 6 *** of IL-24 and VEGF was evaluated by immunohistochemical staining of surgical specimens, and their relations with patient characteristics and survival were *** median follow-up of surviving patients was 73 mo(range:52-122 mo). RESULTS:IL-24 expression was found in 81 out of 90 patients;31 showed weak intensity and 50 showedstrong *** expression was found in 64 out of 90 *** and weak intensities of IL-24 expression were classified as negative expression for ***-24 expression was significantly reduced in poorly differentiated tumors in comparison with well or moderately differentiated tumors(P=0.004),N2b to earlier N stages(P=0.016),and stageⅢc to stageⅢ a orⅢb(P=0.028).The number of involved lymph nodes was also significantly reduced in IL-24-positive patients in comparison with IL-24-negative ones. There was no correlation between VEGF expression and patient *** of IL-24 and VEGF was not correlated with survival,but N stage and stages were significantly correlated with survival. CONCLUSION:IL-24 expression was significantly correlated with histological differentiation,and inversely correlated with the degree of lymph node involvement in stageⅢrectal cancer.

As a new concept in materials design,a variety of strategies have been developed to fabricate optical microlens arrays(MLAs)that enable the miniaturization of optical systems on the micro/nanoscale to improve their characteristic performance with unique optical *** this paper,we introduce a cost-effective and facile fabrication process on a large scale up to~15 inches via sequential lithographic methods to produce thin and deformable hexagonally arranged MLAs consisting of polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS).Simple employment of oxygen plasma treatment on the prestrained MLAs effectively harnessed the spontaneous formation of highly uniform nanowrinkled structures all over the surface of the elastomeric *** strain-controlled tunability,unexpected optical diffraction patterns were characterized by the interference combination effect of the microlens and deformable ***,the hierarchically structured MLAs presented here have the potential to produce desirable spatial arrangements,which may provide easily accessible opportunities to realize microlens-based technology by tunable focal lengths for more advanced micro-optical devices and imaging projection elements on unconventional security substrates.

Usefulness of transcatheter arterial embolization for eighty-three patients with secondary postpartum hemorrhage:Focusing on difference in angiographic findings

BACKGROUND Transcatheter arterial embolization(TAE)has been widely used as an effective and a safe treatment method and was often used as an alternative to the surgical management,but there are limited studies on the efficacy and the safety for patients undergoing their secondary postpartum hemorrhage(PPH).AIM To evaluate the usefulness of TAE for secondary PPH focusing on the angiographic *** We conducted a research from January 2008 to July 2022 on all 83 patients(mean:32 years,range:24-43 years)presented with secondary PPH and they were treated with TAE in two university *** medical records and angiography were retrospective reviewed in order to evaluate the patients’characteristics,delivery details,clinical status and peri-embolization management,angiography and embolization details,technical/clinical success and *** group with active bleeding sign and the group without it were also compared and *** On angiography,46(55.4%)patients showed active bleeding signs such as contrast extravasation(n=37)or pseudoaneurysm(n=8)or both(n=1),and 37(44.6%)patients showed non-active bleeding signs such as only spastic uterine artery(n=2)or hyperemia(n=35).In the active bleeding sign group there were more multiparous patients,low platelet count,prothrombin time prolongation,and high transfusion *** technical success rates were 97.8%(45/46)in active bleeding sign group and 91.9%(34/37)in non-active bleeding sign group,and the overall clinical success rates were 95.7%(44/46)and 97.3%(36/37).An uterine rupture with peritonitis and abscess formation occurred to one patient after the embolization,therefore hysterostomy and retained placenta removal were performed which was a major *** TAE is an effective and a safe treatment method for controlling secondary PPH regardless of angiographic findings.

Modeling asymmetric fracture mechanics of Mg alloy wire in drawing process

In this study,a numerical analysis was conducted on the ductile fracture of a 2-mm diameter Mg-1Zn-0.5Mn-0.5Sr-0.1Ca alloy wire during *** hexagonally close-packed crystal structure of Mg alloys causes asymmetric fracture behavior,especially in the compression *** aim of this study is to develop a comprehensive damage model for Mg alloy wire that accurately predicts ductile fracture,with a focus on the compression region.A novel experimental method was introduced to measure the ductile fracture of Mg alloy wires under different stress *** wire drawing process was simulated using the Generalized Incremental Stress-State dependent damage(GISSMO)Model and the Semi-Analytical Model for Polymers(SAMP)*** damage model's prediction and the experimental results were found to be in excellent agreement,especially in determining crack *** analysis established a safe zone diagram for die angle and reduction ratio,and experimental validation confirmed the feasibility of this *** proposed damage model can provide a practical and reliable analysis for optimizing the drawing process of Mg alloy wire.

Protein and energy concentrations of meat meal and meat and bone meal fed to pigs based on in vitro assays

The objective of this study was to develop equations for estimating ileal digestible crude protein(CP)and metabolizable energy(ME)contents of meat meal(MM)and meat and bone meal(MBM)as feed in-gredients for pigs based on in vitro *** ingredients were 4 sources of MM and 3 sources of *** and CP contents of the ingredients ranged from 3.8%to 33.1%and 46.8%to 82.9%(as-is basis),*** vitro ileal disappearance(IVID)of CP was determined and ileal digestible CP content was calculated by multiplying CP content by IVID of *** vitro total tract disappearance(IVTTD)of dry matter(DM)was determined and ME was calculated using gross energy,CP contents,and IVTTD of *** IVID of CP and IVTTD of DM ranged from 77.2%to 88.7%and from 82.7%to 92.4%,*** ileal digestible CP and ME contents ranged from 37.8%to 73.5%DM and 2,405 to 3,905 kcal/kg DM,*** contents were negatively correlated(P<0.001)with CP(r=-0.99),in vitro ileal digestible CP(r=-0.97),gross energy(r-1.00),in vitro digestible energy(r=-0.97),and adjusted ME(r=-0.97).The most fitting equations for ileal digestible CP and adjusted ME were:ileal digestible CP(%DM)=11.91-0.90×Ash(%DM)+0.74×IVID of CP(%)(R2=0.99)and adjusted ME(kcal/kg DM)=130.85-50.90×ash(%DM)+47.06×IVTTD of DM(%)(R2=0.99).To validate the accuracy of the prediction equations for ME,mean bias and linear bias were determined using a regression *** ME values of MM and MBM were in a good agreement with data obtained from animal ex-periments based on a statistically insignificant bias in the *** conclusion,ME concentrations of MM and MBM as swine feed ingredients can be calculated using ash concentration and in vitro disap-pearance of dry matter.

The challenge for single-atom catalysts in various C-C cross coupling reaction exists in the development of solid supporting *** has been desired tofind a supporting material designed in molecular level to anchor a single-atom catalyst and provide high degree of dispersion and substrate access in aqueous ***,we prepared discrete cages of metal-organic polyhedra anchoring single Pd atom(MOP-BPY(Pd))and successfully performed a Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction with various substrates in aqueous *** was revealed that each tetrahedral cage of MOP-BPY(Pd)has 4.5 Pd atoms on average and retained its high degree of dispersion up to 3 months in *** coupling efficiencies of the Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction exhibited more than 90.0%for various substrates we have tested in the aqueous media,which is superior to those of the molecular Pd complex and metal-organic framework(MOF)anchoring Pd ***,MOP-BPY(Pd)was successfully recovered and recycled without performance degradation.
