Anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects of N-acetylcysteine in diabetic rat corneal epithelium

AIM:To characterize the anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic effects of N-acetylcysteine(NAC)in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic rat corneal epithelium and human corneal epithelial cells(HCECs)exposed to a high-glucose ***:HCECs were incubated in 0,5,50 mmol/L glucose medium,or 50 mmol/L glucose medium with NAC for *** was induced in rats by intraperitoneal injection of 65 mg/kg STZ and some of these rats were topically administered NAC to corneas with 3 mice per *** characterized receptor for advanced glycation end-products(RAGE)expression using immunofluorescence,and interleukin(IL)-1βand cleaved caspase-3(CCAP-3)expression using *** tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αconcentration was measured by ELISA and cleaved poly-ADP ribose polymerase(PARP)concentration was quantified by Western *** cells were detected using TUNEL assay and annexin V and propidium iodide ***:Diabetic rats had higher expression of RAGE(2.46±0.13 fold),IL-1β,and CCAP-3 in apoptotic cells of their corneas than control *** expression of RAGE(1.83±0.11 fold),IL-1β,and CCAP-3,and the number of apoptotic cells,were reduced by topical NAC *** incubated in 50 mmol/L glucose medium showed high concentrations of TNF-α(310±2.00 pg/mL)and cleaved PARP(7.43±0.56 fold),and more extensive apoptosis than cells in 50 mmol/L glucose ***,the addition of NAC reduced the concentrations of TNF-α(153.67±2.31 pg/mL)and cleaved PARP(5.55±0.31 fold)and the number of apoptotic ***:NAC inhibits inflammation and apoptosis in the corneas of diabetic rats and HCECs maintained in a high-glucose environment.

Dual ion storage hybrid supercapacitors(HsCs)are considered as a promising device to overcome the limited energy density of existing supercapacitors while preserving high power and long ***,the development of high-capacity anion-storing materials,which can be paired with fast charg-ing capacitive electrodes,lags behind cation-storing ***,we demonstrate the surface faradaic OH-storage mechanism of anion storing perovskite oxide composites and their application in high-performance dual ion *** oxygen vacancy and nanoparticle size of the reduced LaMnO_(3)(r-LaMnO_(3))were controlled,while r-LaMnO_(3) was chemically coupled with ozonated carbon nanotubes(oCNTs)for the improved anion storing capacity and cycle *** taken by in-situ and ex-situ spectroscopic and computational analyses,OH-ions are inserted into the oxygen vacancies coordi-nating with octahedral Mn with the increase in the oxidation state of Mn during the charging process or vice *** OH-storing r-LaMnO_(3)/oCNT composite with Na*storing MXene,the as-fabricated aqueous dual ion HSCs achieved the cycle performance of 73.3%over 10,000 cycles,delivering the max-imum energy and power densities of 47.5 w h kg^(-1) and 8 kw kg^(-1),respectively,far exceeding those of previously reported aqueous anion and dual ion storage *** research establishes a foundation for the unique anion storage mechanism of the defect engineered perovskite oxides and the advancement of dual ion hybrid energy storage devices with high energy and power densities.

Overview of harmful algal blooms(red tides)in hong Kong during 1975–2021

hong Kong has a long historical record of harmful algal blooms(HABs).In the 1980s-1990s,HABs were mainly pollution-related and most of the events happened in estuaries and enclosed embayment such as Tolo Harbour and Port *** major cause of HABs in 1980s-1990s was closely related to nutrients enrichment;included but not limited to changes in the concentration and ratio of soluble N and P in *** major causative organisms of HABs in hong Kong by then were meso-plankton such as selected species of diatoms and dinofl ***,zooplankton was also a cause of red tides(the common name of HABs).There has been gradual change after the *** is attributed to higher and higher influences from the region,namely the Zhujiang(Pearl)River *** are increasing influences from Chinese mainland due to extraordinary social and economic growths during the past 20 *** the past10 years,HABs in hong Kong was mainly subject to regional impacts in the Zhujiang River *** the duration period and covered areas have been enlarged which overwhelmed the localized influences of stream pollution and self-contamination of aquaculture *** flagellates of uncommon happening become dominant species in HAB ***,the seasonal impact of Noctiluca scintillans in late winter to mid spring remained.

Morphological variability and genetic diversity in five species of Skeletonema(Bacillariophyta)

Twelve strains of Skeletonema from Chinese coastal waters and another strain from the West Sea of Korea were examined using light microscopy(LM),scanning and transmission electron microscopy(SEM,TEM),and small subunit(SSU)rDNA sequence *** identified four species of Skeletonema:*** Sarno et Zingone,***(***)Bethge,*** Sarno et Kooistra,***- icum Cleve,as well as a Skeletonema-like *** are the first records of ***,*** and *** in *** Skeletonema-like species,MMDL5067,was isolated from the estuary of the Changjiang *** morphologic and phylogenetic char- acteristics of this species are not correspond to those of any previously published Skeletonema *** intercalary fultoportula pro- cesses(IFPPs)has long open tubes,and the intercalary rimoportula process(IRP)is short and located inside the rim of the IFPPs. Effects of dispersoid preforming via multistep sintering of oxide dispersion-strengthened CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

Dispersoid formation and microstructural evolution in an oxide dispersion-strengthened CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy(HEA)using a newly designed multistep sintering process are *** proposed multistep sintering consists of a dispersoid preforming heat treatment of as-milled 0.1 wt%Y_(2)O_(3)-CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy powders at 800℃,followed by sintering at 800–1000℃ under uniaxial *** the conventional single-step sintered bulk,the coarsened BCC Y_(2)O_(3)dispersoids mainly form with an incoherent interface with the HEA *** contrast,finer FCC Y_(2)O_(3)dispersoids,an atypical form of Y_(2)O_(3),are formed in the matrix region after multistep *** of FCC Y_(2)O_(3)disper-soids is initiated on the favorable facet,the{111}plane of the austenitic matrix,with the formation of a semi-coherent interface with the matrix during the dispersoid preforming heat treatment and it maintains its refined size even after *** is found that dispersoid preforming prior to sintering appears promising to control the finer dispersoid formation and refined grain structure.

We present innovative nonlinear acoustics for characterizing fatigue-induced micro-damage of austenitic stainless steel 316 subjected to high-cycle *** fatigue-driven deformations are accumulated at several positions near the middle of hourglass-shaped specimens.A bell-shaped curve of acoustic nonlinearity as a function of position is observed,and the variation in acoustic nonlinearity is attributed to the evolution of a lattice defect (dislocation) and stress-induced martensite based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) *** oblique incidence technique using a longitudinal waveform is a potentially viable method for characterizing the high-cycle fatigue deformation of austenitic stainless steel 316 alloys.

The acoustic nonlinearity of surface waves is studied to evaluate plastic deformation in aluminum alloys.A narrow-band surface wave is successfully generated by a pulsed Nd-YAG laser system consisting of a beam expander and a slit *** degrees of tensile deformation are induced by interrupting the tensile tests so as to obtain aluminum specimens with different degrees of plastic *** normalized acoustic nonlinearity increases as a function of tensile *** experimental results show that the acoustic nonlinearity of a laser-generated surface wave has a good correlation with the level of tensile deformation and has a potential to evaluate microdamage induced by dislocation microplasticity.

Lithium–sulfur batteries(LSBs)are regarded as promising candidates for the next-generation energy storage devices owing to their high-theoretical capacity(1675 mAh g^(−1))and affordable ***,several limitations of LSBs such as the lithium polysulfide shuttle,large volume expansion,and low electrical conductivity of sulfur need to be resolved for practical *** address these limitations,herein,a multidimensional architectured hybrid(Co@CNT/nG),where Co_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles are encapsulated into threedimensional(3D)porous N-doped reduced graphene oxide interconnected with carbon nanotube(CNT)branches,is synthesized through a simple pyrolysis *** synergistic effect achieved through the homogeneously distributed and encapsulated Co_(3)O_(4) nanoparticles,the interconnected CNT branches,and the 3D hierarchical porous structure and N-doping of Co@CNT/nG significantly suppresses the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and enhances the conversion redox kinetics for the improved sulfur *** validate this effect through various measurements including symmetric cells,Li_(2)S nucleation,shuttle currents,Tafel slopes,diffusion coefficients,and post-mortem ***,Co@CNT/nG-70S-based LSB cells achieve a high-specific capacity of 1193.1 mAh g^(−1) at 0.1 C and a low capacity decay rate of 0.030%per cycle for 700 cycles at 5 C,delivering a high areal capacity of 5.62 mAh cm^(−2) even with a loading of 6.5 mg cm^(−2).

An aerosol electrical mobility spectrum analyzer(AEMSA),developed at Hanyang University,was employed to investigate the particle charge characteristics in the Antarctic and Arctic *** particle charge characteristics in these areas were compared with the charging state in Ansan,South Korea,located in the midlatitude,where artificial factors,such as human activity,urbanization,and traffic,might result in a higher total ***,in Ansan,South Korea,the charged-particle polarity ratio was very stable and was close to ***,notably different particle charge characteristics were obtained in the Antarctic and Arctic *** imbalance between the numbers of positively and negatively charged particles was evident,resulting in more positive charges on the atmospheric *** average,the positively charged particle concentrations in the Antarctic and Arctic areas were 1.4 and 2.8 times higher,respectively,compared with the negatively charged *** developed AEMSA system and the findings of this study provide useful information on the characteristics of atmospheric aerosols in the Antarctic and Arctic regions and can be further utilized to study particle formation mechanisms.
