In Xenopus, injection of S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase (SAMDC) mRNA into fertilized eggs or2-cell stage embryos induces massive cell dissociation and embryo-lysis at the early gastrula stage due toactivation of the maternal program of apoptosis. We injected SAMDC mRNA into only one of the animal side blastomeres of embryos at different stages of cleavage, and examined the timing of the onset of theapoptotic reaction. In the injection at 4- and 8-cell stages, a considerable number of embryos developed intotadpoles and in the injection at 16- and 32-cell stages, all the embryos became tadpoles, although tadpolesobtained were sometimes abnormal. However, using GFP as a lineage tracer, we found that descendant cellsof the blastomere injected with SAMDC mRNA at 8- to 32-cell stages are confined within the blastocoel atthe early gastrula stage and undergo apoptotic cell death within the blastocoel, in spite of the continueddevelopment of the injected embryos. ADCP application for long-term monitoring of coastal water

Three kind of application of ADCP is reported for long-term monitoring in coastal sea.(1)The routine monitoring of water qualities. The water quality and ADCP echo data (600 kHz) observed in the long-term are analgzed at MT (Marine Tower) Station of Kansai International Airport in the Osaka Bay, Japan. The correlation between the turbidity and echo intensity in the surface layer is not good because air bubbles generated by breaking wave are not detected by the turbidity meter, but detected well by ADCP. When estimating the turbidity consists of plankton population from echo intensity, the effect of bubbles have to be eliminated. (2) Monitoring stirring up of bottom sediment. The special observation was carried out by using following two ADCP in the Osaka Bay, One ADCP was installed upward on the sea. The other ADCP was hanged downward at the gate type stand about 3 m above from the bottom. At the spring tide, high echo intensities indicating the stirring up of bottom sediment were observed. (3) The monitoring for the boundary condition of water mixing at an estuary. In summer season, the ADCP was set at the mouth of Tanabe Bay in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan. During the observation, water temperature near the bottom showed remarkable falls with interval of about 5-7 d. When the bottom temperature fell, the inflow current with low echo intensity water appears at the bottom layer in the ADCP record. It is concluded that when occasional weak northeast wind makes weak coastal upwelling at the mouth of the bay, the combination of upwelling with internal tidal flow causes remarkable water exchange and dispels the red tide.

3D attitude measurement by means of spread spectrum modulated ultrasonic wave

Local position and attitude measurement methods are necessary for the navigation of autonomous robots and the other applications. In this paper, a 3D attitude measurement method is proposed. This method uses the spread spectrum modulated ultrasonic wave for the measurement of the pseudo-distance of each pathway between transmitter and receiver elements that are arranged in an array. The relative attitude between transmitter and receiver unit could be calculated from the relationship between these pseudo-distances. The use of spread spectrum modulation enables the high accuracy, noise tolerance, and coexistence of multiple transmitter devices by code division multiple access (CDMA) between transmitter and receiver elements. A pair of transmitter and receiver prototype for proposed method was manufactured, and the fundamental performance was examined in experiments. As a result, accuracy of σ=0.78 mm in the pseudo-distance measurement of each pathway between transmitter and receiver elements was confirmed, and about 0.01 rad resolution in the attitude measurement was also confirmed.

Efficacy of treatment with rebamipide for endoscopic submucosal dissection-induced ulcers

AIM:To prospectively compare the healing rates of endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)-induced ulcers treated with either a proton-pump inhibitor(PPI)or ***:We examined 90 patients with early gastric cancer who had undergone *** patients were administered an intravenous infusion of the PPI lansoprazole(20 mg)every 12 h for 2 d,followed by oral administration of lansoprazole(30 mg/d,5 d).After7-d treatment,the patients were randomly assigned to 2 groups and received either lansoprazole(30 mg/d orally,n=45;PPI group)or rebamipide(300 mg orally,three times a day;n=45;rebamipide group).At 4and 8 wk after ESD,the ulcer outcomes in the 2 groups were ***:No significant differences were noted in patient age,underlying disease,tumor location,Helicobacter pylori infection rate,or ESD-induced ulcersize between the 2 *** both 4 and 8 wk,the healing rates of ESD-induced ulcers were similar in the PPI-treated and the rebamipide-treated patients(4 wk:PPI,27.2%;rebamipide,33.3%;P=0.5341;8 wk:PPI,90.9%;rebamipide,93.3%;P=0.6710).At 8 wk,the rates of granulation lesions following ulcer healing were significantly higher in the PPI-treated group(13.6%)than in the rebamipide-treated group(0.0%;P=0.0103).Ulcer-related symptoms were similar in the2 treatment groups at 8 *** medication cost of 8-wk treatment with the PPI was 10945 yen vs 4889 yen for *** ulcer bleeding or complications due to the drugs were observed in either treatment ***:The healing rate of ESD-induced ulcers was similar with rebamipide or PPI treatment;however,rebamipide treatment is more cost-effective and prevents granulation lesions following ulcer healing.

Surgical treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma: Evidence-based outcomes

Surgeons may be severely criticized from the perspective of evidence-based medicine because the majority of surgical publications appear not to be convincing. In the top nine surgical journals in 1996, half of the 175 publications refer to pilot studies lacking a control group, 18% to animal experiments, and only 5% to randomized controlled trials (RCT). There are five levels of clinical evidence:level 1 (randomized controlled trial), level 2 (prospective concurrent cohort study), level 3 (retrospective historical cohort study), level 4 (pre-post study), and level 5 (case report). Recently, a Japanese evidence-based guideline for the surgical treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was made by a committee (Chairman, Professor Makuuchi and five members). We searched the literature using the Medline Dialog System with four Keywords:HCC, surgery, English papers, in the last 20 years. A total of 915 publications were identified systematically reviewed. At the first selection (in which surgery-dominant papers were selected), 478 papers survived. In the second selection (clearly concluded papers), 181 papers survived. In the final selection (clinically significant papers), 100 papers survived. The evidence level of the 100 surviving papers is shown here:level-1 papers (13%), level-2 papers (11%), level-3 papers (52%), and level-4 papers (24%);therefore, there were 24% prospective papers and 76% retrospective papers. Here, we present a part of the guideline on the five main surgical issues:indication to operation, operative procedure, peri-operative care, prognostic factor, and post-operative adjuvant therapy.

2-D localization system utilizing M-sequence encoded laser beam scanning

In this paper, as the active position measurement system, a novel method for a two-dimensional localization system using M-sequence signal is proposed. The feature of this system is to realize a position measurement only by scanning the encoded laser beams from fixing points to a measurement field, and by observing it. First, both the system configuration and encoding method were practically considered, and an order and an initial value of M-sequence signal were selected for encoding. This method is based on discrete angle measurement therefore the resolution has its own limitation. To overcome this limitation, analogue phase shift detecting method was introduced. System design was performed and applied to position measurement experiments. The experimental results show that the measurement error of the analogue method is 1/3 of that of the discrete method.

Suppression of Wave-Excited Vibration of Offshore Platform by Use of Tuned Liquid Dampers

This paper describes experimental and theoretical investigations of Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD) characteristics for suppressing the wave-excited structural vibration. The structural model for the experiments is scaled according to a full size offshore platform by matching their dynamic properties. Rectangular TLDs of different sizes with partially filled liquid are examined. By observing the performance and behavior of TLDs through laboratory experiments, the Study investigates the influence of a number of parameters, including container size, container shape, frequency ratio, and incident wave characteristics. In an analytical study, a mathematical model that describes the nonlinear behavior of liquid in TLD and the interaction of TLD and structure is prerequisite. The validity of the model is evaluated and simulating results can reasonably match the corresponding experimental results.

Study on fragmentation behavior of taxoids by tandem mass spectrometry

We have studied the fragmentation behavior of positive and negative ions of taxoi and 6/8/6 type taxoids, the influence of different substituents on fragmentation, and the correlativity between fragmentation patterns and structure by MS/MS technique with different ionization methods such as FAB-MS, ESI-MS, ete. We have also investigated in detail the fragmentation of various molecular-related ions, such as [M+H]+, [M+Na]+ and [M-H] ions, and the formation pathways of characteristic fragment ions. It has been found that there exists some competing reaction between the loss of C-13 side chain and decomposition by loss of acetic acid. In addition, by comparing CID spectra obtained with low- and high-energy collision, it is seen that CID-MS/MS with low-energy collision is more suitable for the study of the structural analysis of small molecules and drug metabolites. The Optimal Design of TMD for Offshore Structures

This paper presents the optimal design procedure of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) for reducing vibration of an actual steel jacket offshore platform excited by random wave loading. In this study, a frequency domain is taken. The force on the structure is determined by use of the linearized Morison equation for an input Power Spectral Density (PSD) of wave elevation. The sensitivity of optimum values of TMD to characteristic parameters of random wave spectrum is analyzed. An optimized TMD design for the modeled platform is given based on design conditions and the findings of the study.
