Correlation between dose-volume parameters and rectal bleeding after 12 fractions of carbon ion radiotherapy for prostate cancer

BACKGROUND Carbon ion radiotherapy(CIRT)is currently used to treat prostate *** bleeding is a major cause of toxicity even with ***,to date,a correlation between the dose and volume parameters of the 12 fractions of CIRT for prostate cancer and rectal bleeding has not been ***,the clinical risk factors for rectal bleeding were absent after 12 fractions of *** To identify the risk factors for rectal bleeding in 12 fractions of CIRT for prostate *** Among 259 patients who received 51.6 Gy[relative biological effectiveness(RBE)],in 12 fractions of CIRT,15 had grade 1(5.8%)and nine had grade 2 rectal bleeding(3.5%).The dose-volume parameters included the volume(cc)of the rectum irradiated with at least x Gy(RBE)(Vx)and the minimum dose in the most irradiated x cc normal rectal volume(Dx).RESULTS The mean values of D6cc,D2cc,V10 Gy(RBE),V20 Gy(RBE),V30 Gy(RBE),and V40 Gy(RBE)were significantly higher in the patients with rectal bleeding than in those *** cutoff values were D6cc=34.34 Gy(RBE),D2cc=46.46 Gy(RBE),V10 Gy(RBE)=9.85 cc,V20 Gy(RBE)=7.00 cc,V30 Gy(RBE)=6.91 cc,and V40 Gy(RBE)=4.26 *** D2cc,V10 Gy(RBE),and V20 Gy(RBE)cutoff values were significant predictors of grade 2 rectal *** The above dose-volume parameters may serve as guidelines for preventing rectal bleeding after 12 fractions of CIRT for prostate cancer.

Angle Measurement Based on Second Harmonic Generation Using Artificial Neural Network

This article proposed an angle measurement method based on second harmonic generation(SHG)using an artifcial neural network(ANN).The method comprises three sequential parts:SHG spectrum collection,data preprocessing,and neural network ***,the referenced angles and SHG spectrums are collected by the autocollimator and SHG-based angle sensor,respectively,for *** mapping is learned by the trained ANN after completing the training process,which solves the inverse problem of obtaining the angle from the SHG ***,the feasibility of the proposed method is verifed in multiple-peak Maker fringe and single-peak phase-matching areas,with an overall angle measurement range exceeding 20,000 *** predicted angles by ANN are compared with the autocollimator to evaluate the measure-ment performance in all the angular ***,a sub-arcsecond level of accuracy and resolution is achieved in the phase-matching area.

Investigation of Temperature Dependence of Polymer Gels for Use with Scanning Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Polymer gels are three-dimensional dosimetric tools. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the temperature dependence of polymer gels during scanning Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Prepared gels were irradiated with a 6MV X-ray beam at intensities ranging from 0 to 20 Gy in order to investigate their dose-R2 and dose-R1 responses. Irradiated gels were evaluated from 1.5-T magnetic resonance R2 and R1 images for each 5°C change in temperature from 5°C to 41°C, and then the four-field box technique irradiation plan was used to deliver a total dose of 4 Gy using the same beam weight in each direction to the prepared gels. The profile of the dose map generated from the four-field irradiated gel data at 20°C was then compared with the planned data. The dose-R2 response curve was linear up to 20 Gy at 20°C, with a slope of 1.17 Gy-1˙s-1. The slopes of the fitted curves of the dose-R2 decreased as gel temperature increased. The slopes of the dose-R1 curves were more parallel than the slopes of the dose-R2 curves between 5 and 41°C. The difference in the full width of half maximum of the gel profile data obtained using the four-field box technique at 20°C and the planned data were below 5% on average. The dose map from the irradiated gels obtained using the dose-R2 curve was the same as that from the planned data under the same temperature conditions. Measurement of difference between various temperatures is significant with dose accuracy. It is suitable to evaluate the gel dosimeter under the thermal equilibrium condition, MRI room temperature from the point of view of the stability of the irradiated gels.
