Biosurfactants are structurally diverse classes of amphiphilic molecules derived from *** have various properties such as surface,emulsification,antibacterial,anti-adhesive,anti-biofilm,antioxidant activity that can be used in many industrial *** interest in these molecules compared to their synthetic counterparts is due to their biodegradability,low toxicity,structural diversity,and stability over a wide range of pH,temperature,and *** biosurfactants,those derived from lactic acid bacteria(LAB)attracted attention nowadays due to the GRAS(Generally recognized as safe)status of these *** production by LAB strains has been documented in several investigations,and they deal with the functionality and chemical nature of *** biosurfactants were mainly a complex mixture of proteinaceous compounds,glycolipids,glycoproteins,or *** are only a few studies reporting on the elucidation of the structure of LAB ***,biosurfactants’production process includes several unit operations starting from screening methods to the characterization of the biosurfactant *** review highlights the different techniques used in the screening of biosurfactants production by LAB,their extraction and purification processes,and their structural characterization and application in the food industry.

Gomphrena serrata L. (Amaranthaceae) is a medicinal plant widely used traditionally in rural areas to treat many diseases, including gastrointestinal helminthiasis of small ruminants. this work aims to estimate the plant extracts phytochemical potential and study the activities of the aqueous decoction (GS_AD), aqueous macerate (GS_AM), and hydroalcoholic macerate (GS_HEM) of Gomphrena serrata extracts on two developmental stages (eggs and adult worms) of Haemonchus contortus. Phytochemical screening was carried out. the acute toxicity test was performed according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) test guideline 423. the Haemonchus contortus eggs hatching inhibition test was performed left to incubate for 48 hours in the presence of the different plant extracts at increasing concentrations of 0.125;0.25;0.5;0.625;1;2;3 mg/mL. For the motility inhibition test on adult worms, the worms were contacted with the extracts at concentrations of 0.75;1;1.25;1.5;2;3;4 mg/mL and left to incubate for 24 hours. Albendazole and levamisole were used as standard. Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, reducing compounds, coumarins and derivatives, anthocyanins, steroids, triterpenes, and flavonoids. An acute toxicity study showed that the oral LD50 value of G. serrata was estimated to be 5000 mg/kg. All extracts showed an effect on both stages of parasite development. the hatching inhibition rate was 100% from 3 mg/mL for all three extracts. the rate of inhibition of motility was 100% from 4 mg/mL for each extract. HEM is more efficient on eggs and Haemonchus contortus adult worms than other extracts with IC50 of 0.457 mg/mL and LC50 of 1.329 mg/mL, respectively. these results suggest that Gomphrena serrata, a plant used by farmers, has anthelmintic properties.

Experimental and theoretical Investigations on Copper Corrosion Inhibition by Cefixime Drug in 1M HNO<sub>3</sub>Solution

Cefixime, a third-generation semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic was used as a copper corrosion inhibitor in 1M HNO3 solution. the study was conducted through the weight loss technique at 298 - 318 K and theoretical studies based on quantum chemistry. the studied drug inhibited the corrosion of copper in 1M HNO3 over the cefixime concentration range (0.02 - 2 mM). the inhibition efficiency increased with an increase in the inhibitor concentration to reach 91.07% at 2 mM, but decreased with an increase in temperature. the thermodynamic functions related to the adsorption of cefixime on the copper surface and that of the metal dissolution were computed and analyzed. the results point out spontaneous adsorption, mainly through a physisorption mechanism following Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and an endothermic dissolution process. Quantum chemical calculations were also performed at B3LYP level with 6-31G (d, p) basis set and lead to molecular descriptors such as EHOMO (energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital), ELUMO (energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital), ΔE (energy gap) and μ (dipole moment). the global reactivity descriptors such as χ (electronegativity), χ (global hardness), S (global softness), and ω (electrophilicity index) were derived using Koopman’s theorem and analyzed. the local reactivity parameters, including Fukui functions and dual descriptors were determined and discussed. Experimental and theoretical results were found to be in good agreement.

Introduction: the sixth month appointment (M6) is crucial because at the start of the ARt course, it is an indicator of the prognosis of the evolution of care and decision-making on the continuity of treatment. Objective: the objective of this study is therefore to present the profile of People Living with HIV under treatment with Dolutegravir 6 months after starting ARt in Kinshasa. Methods: the present study is a cross-sectional view at M6 of a prospective cohort to determine the profile of People Living with HIV (PLHIV) after 6 months of ARV treatment (ARt) in Kinshasa, DRC. During the M6 appointment, from April to August 2022, a sample of 5 ml of blood was taken for the various analyzes from all HIV patients included. the collection of sociodemographic data as well as biological and clinical data was carried out under the same conditions as at inclusion. the parameters recorded during M6 were: age, sex, and religion, level of study, marital status, profession, socio-economic level, height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), clinical profile, opportunistic infections as well as biochemical and molecular assessment. Results: In M6, 62 patients were registered including 38 women (61.3%), thus giving a sex ratio of 1.58 in favor of women. Fifty-seven (57) patients did not respond to the appointment, representing a loss rate of 47.89%. the most common age group is between 36 and 45 years old with 16 patients (26.7%). the mean age was 42.4 ± 13.3 years. the mean weight was 60.5 ± 15.4 kg with a mean BMI of 22.6 ± 5.8 kg/m2. thirty-four (34) patients (61.82%) were in Clinical Stage 3. thirty-six (36) patients (67.92%) had a normal clinical condition. the most common opportunistic infections among patients in M6 were: skin pruritus (25.8%), dermatitis (22.6%) and rash (21%). the mean values of biochemical parameters of patients in M6 were within normal ranges. the median VL value was 2.92 log10 RNA copies/ml with 17.75% of patients experiencing major failure of f

Electrochemical Study of the Synergistic Effect of two Copper Corrosion Inhibitors, Nicotinic Acid (NAC) and Nicotinamide (NAM) in two Different Media

Inhibitive properties of NAC and NAM as well as their mixture have been investigated in two different corrosive media through potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at 298 K. these electrochemical measurements indicate that the inhibition efficiency increases with the concentration for each of the inhibitors used separately as well as for their mixture. In both cases, the combination behaves as mixed type inhibitor with a great cathodic tendency. NaCl 3.5% highlights an antagonist effect of NAM which reduces the effectiveness of NAC whereas HNO3 1M shows a synergistic effect between them.

Background: For several decades, the introduction of AntiRetrovirals (ARVs) has improved the symptomatology of People Living with HIV (PLHIV), a spectacular reduction in morbidity and mortality, an improvement in life expectancy and quality of life of PLHIV. Objective: the objective of this study was to determine the profile of PLHIV initiating AntiRetroViral treatment (ARt) in the era of Dolutegravir in Kinshasa. Methods: Cross-section of a prospective cohort to determine the profile of PLHIV initiating ARt in Kinshasa. the inclusions were from October 04, 2021 to February 15, 2022. Confirmation of the diagnosis was carried out by Nested PCR. the inclusion criteria were: being at least 18 years old, confirmed HIV positive, naïve to ARt, consenting and having signed an informed consent. the parameters of interest followed for the present study were: age, sex, religion, level of study, marital status, occupation, height, weight, body mass index (BMI), the clinical profile, the opportunistic infections as well as the para-clinical assessment (biochemistry and molecular biology). Results: 67 (56.3%) women and 52 (43.7%) men were included, thus 119 patients, all confirmed positive for HIV by Nested PCR on the gag, pol and env regions. the average age of the patients included is 39.87 ± 12.36 years and the most represented age group is that of 36 to 45 years with 37 patients (31.9%). the average height was 1.66 ± 0.08 meters, with an average weight of 56.41 ± 13.30 kg, giving an average Body Mass Index (BMI) of 21.54 ± 5.17 kg/m2. the majority of patients were married (46.1%), of Protestant religion (70.7%), with secondary education (66.7%), and working in the informal sector (29.4%). 49 patients (41.5%) were in clinical stage 3 and 55 patients (47.0%) had a normal clinical status. Malaria (45.4%) and tuberculosis (29.4%) were the most common Opportunistic Infections. the mean values of the patients’ assessed biochemical parameters were within the ranges. the

7-(2-ethyltiophenyl) theophylline was used as copper corrosion inhibitor in 1M HNO3 solution. the study was performed using mass loss, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Density Functional theory (DFt) methods. the results show that the inhibition efficiency increases up to 91.29% with increase of the inhibitor concentration (from 0.05 to 5 mM) but decreases with raising temperature of the solution. Copper dissolution was found to be temperature and 7-(2-ethyltiophenyl) theophylline concentration dependent. the thermodynamic functions related to the adsorption of the molecule on the copper surface and that of the metal dissolution were determined. the results point out a spontaneous adsorption and an endothermic dissolution processes. Adsorption models including Langmuir, El-Awady and Flory-Huggins isotherms were examined. the results also suggest spontaneous and predominant physical adsorption of 7-(2-ethyltiophenyl) theophylline on the metal surface which obeys Langmuir isotherm model. Further investigation on the morphology using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has confirmed the existence of a protective film of inhibitor molecules on copper surface. Furthermore, the global and local reactivity parameters of the studied molecule were analyzed. Experimental and theoretical results were found to be in good agreement.

the delay in the delivery of laboratory results can be fatal and can even lead to the death of patients. this study was conducted at the clinical laboratory of the University Hospital of Kinshasa (UHK) from October 2020 to April 2021, aimed to evaluate the laboratory tests’ turnaround time (tAt) and to identify reasons for delay. tAt was quantified using a time and motion analysis approach. the evaluation of tAt consisted of comparing the overall intra-lab tAt with the suggested tAt using student t-test at 95% confidence intervals. Brainstorming was the root cause analysis tool used for identifying reasons for delay. In this study, the laboratory tests’ tAts were significantly higher (p to international guidelines (60 minutes) and customers’ suggested tAt (120 minutes). Only 0.98% of the samples were reported within 60 minutes of patient reception and 1.47% within 120 minutes, i.e. an outlier rate of 98.5%. Root causes of delay related to Machinery, Management, Manpower, Materials, Method and Milieu. Because of many reasons, the laboratory is not meeting the established tAt. Preventive and curative measures must be undertaken to reduce the delay and improve the tAt.

Improving Clinical Laboratory Quality through Reduction of tests’ turnaround time in Democratic Republic of the Congo: Key Strategies

In Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the laboratory tAt is significantly very long and do not comply with either international standards or the suggestions of customers. However, there is neither a national nor a local strategy to improve the laboratory tAt. the aim of the present study is to develop practical management strategies to shorten clinical laboratory tests’ tAt. this was a qualitative study conducted in Kinshasa. Focus groups and Lean tools were used respectively to generate a wide range of views from a variety of laboratory staff and to eliminate several form of waste in the laboratory flow process. Based on the identified root causes of delay, focus groups participants reported that there is a lot of scope for the improvement of tAt in DRC. Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential. the hospital management should implement the Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) and install Middleware. total laboratory automation, inventory system for all reagents and supplies used in the laboratory, expansion of the sampling area, sufficient number of high-power machine and a clear job description are indispensable. LIS, 3.5 mL BD vacutainer BarricortM tube and point-of-care testing (POCt) are necessary for workflow improvement. A reduction of 312 minutes was achieved by eliminating or decreasing non-value-added activities. Applying the suggested key strategies, and particularly the new workflow process, is a basis for improving the laboratory tests’ tAt. the algorithm presented can be easily implemented in other laboratories that face this type of problem.
