Characterization of Resistance to the Green Rice Leafhopper (Nephotettix cincticepsUhler) in a Core Collection of Landraces in Rice (Oryza sativaL.)

The green rice leafhopper (GRH;Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler) is one of the most devastating insect pests of cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) in temperate regions in Asia. Using the rice germplasms with biotic stress resistance is the most effective and environmentally-friendly way to control the insect pests in the paddy. Sixty accessions from a core set of worldwide collection of rice were characterized for resistance to the GRH by antibiosis test both at the seedling and at the booting stages. The positive correlations of average nymph mortality (ANM) were observed between at the seedling stage and at the booting stage on 3 days after infestation (DAI) (r = 0.684**), 5DAI (r = 0.680**), and 7DAI (r = 0.652**), respectively. This result will give us the opportunity to screen resistance to the GRH with the cost-efficient way using rice seedlings in a growth chamber. To classify the 60 accessions evaluated, the ANM of the GRH of each accession was compared to the respective ANM of resistant and susceptible controls with the least significant difference (LSD) value. Based on the statistical difference or similarity of the ANMs to the resistant and the susceptible controls, we proposed the four groups of resistance to the GRH, (I) high level of resistance, (II) considerable level of resistance, (III) moderate level of resistance, and (IV) susceptibility. At the seedling stage, a total of 26 accessions were highly resistant in addition to other 6 for considerable level of resistance and other 10 for moderate level of resistance. At the booting stage, on the other hand, a total of 18 accessions were highly resistant in addition to other 3 for considerable level of resistance and other 5 for moderate level of resistance. A total of 42 accessions with high to moderate level of resistance were distributed across 16 countries in Asia in addition to each one for Madagascar and USA. Allocation of Macronutrients in Roots, Sheaths, and Leaves Determines Salt Tolerance in Rice

To determine useful parameters for salt tolerance in rice and selection of salt-tolerant varieties, their macronutrient contents in roots, sheaths, and leaves were evaluated under salt stress condition. A hydroponic experiment was conducted to evaluate 29 rice varieties for salt tolerance. The salt stress treatment included an artificial seawater solution (electrical conductivity of 12 dS·m-1). After a 2-week period of salt stress, standard evaluation scores (SES) of visual injuries for salt stress were assessed. In addition, we measured the contents of N, P, K, Na, Mg, and Ca in roots, sheaths, and leaves. The results showed that differences in macronutrients in the different plant tissues correlated with rice tolerance to the salt stress condition. Under the control treatment, salt-tolerant varieties exhibited low K content in root. Under the salt stress treatment, the salt-tolerant varieties exhibited low SES, high N content in leaves and sheaths, low Na content in leaves and sheaths, low Mg content in leaves and sheaths, and low Ca content in sheaths. The salt-tolerant varieties also exhibited high salt stress treatment/control treatment (ST/CT) ratios for dry matter in sheaths, N content in leaves and sheaths, and K content in sheaths, and low Na/K ratios in leaves and sheaths. Therefore, these parameters might be useful to understand salt tolerance in rice.

Genetic Mapping and Characterization of Lethal Necrotic Mutants in Rice (Oryza sativaL.)

The spread of tissue necrosis leads to plant death. We isolated 18 lethal necrotic mutants induced in rice (Oryza sativa L.) by gamma-irradiation. The necrotic lethality among the 18 mutants was controlled by single recessive genes designated necrotic lethality1 (nec1) to nec18. These mutants display pale-green leaves from the third-leaf stage and leaf-tip necrosis, which spreads to the whole plant, killing it. Genetic mapping and histochemical analysis of the lethal necrotic mutants were conducted. At least four independent loci on chromosomes 2 and 4 controlled necrotic lethality. Therefore, the genetic causes of lethal necrosis vary among mutant stocks. Histochemical analysis at 12 days after sowing showed that H2O2 accumulated in the necrotic parts of leaves, and that cell death occurred throughout the leaf. Mutants for early necrotic lethality (35 days to lethality) were characterized by the incomplete spread of H2O2 accumulation within the third leaf.

In the operation of a centrifugal compressor of turbocharger, instability phenomena such as rotating stall and surge are induced at a lower flow rate close to the maximum pressure ratio. In this study, the compressed air at the exit of centrifugal compressor was re-circulated and injected to the impeller inlet by using two injection nozzles in order to suppress the surge phenomenon. The most effective circumferential position was examined to reduce the flow rate at the surge inception. Moreover, the influences of the injection on the fluctuating property of the flow field before and after the surge inception were investigated by examining the frequency of static pressure fluctuation on the wall surface and visualizing the compressor wall surface by oil-film visualization technique.

Clinicopathological features of minute pharyngeal lesions diagnosed by narrow-band imaging endoscopy and biopsy

Recently, several reports have demonstrated that fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography （FDG-PET） is useful in differentiating between benign and malignant lesions in the gallbladder. However, there is a limitation in the ability of FDG-PET to differentiate between inflammatory and malignant lesions. We herein present a case of xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis misdiagnosed as gallbladder carcinoma by ultrasonography and computed tomography. FDG-PET also showed increased activity. In this case, FDG-PET findings resulted in a false-positive for the diagnosis of gallbladder carcinoma.

Efficacy of transanal drainage tube in preventing anastomotic leakage after surgery for rectal cancer: A meta-analysis

BACKGROUND Anastomotic leakage(AL)following rectal cancer surgery is an important cause of mortality and *** transanal drainage tubes(TDTs)are expected to reduce the rate of AL,their preventive effects are *** To reveal the effect of TDT in patients with symptomatic AL after rectal cancer *** A systematic literature search was performed using the PubMed,Embase,and Cochrane Library *** included randomized controlled trials(RCTs)and prospective cohort studies(PCSs)in which patients were assigned to two groups depending on the use or non-use of TDT and in which AL was *** results of the studies were synthesized using the Mantel-Haenszel randomeffects model,and a two-tailed P value>0.05 was considered statistically *** Three RCTs and two PCSs were included in this *** AL was examined in all 1417 patients(712 with TDT),and TDTs did not reduce the symptomatic AL *** a subgroup analysis of 955 patients without a diverting stoma,TDT reduced the symptomatic AL rate(odds ratio=0.50,95%confidence interval:0.29–0.86,P=0.012).CONCLUSION TDT may not reduce AL overall among patients undergoing rectal cancer ***,patients without a diverting stoma may benefit from TDT placement.
