The Late Tertiary red clay/bed sediments underlying the Quaternary loess-paleosol in the Chinese Loess Plateau possesses high-resolution paleoclimatic changes related to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. Magnetostratigra-phy and susceptibility measurements are discussed in this paper. The paleomagnetic results show that the red clay/bed began to accumulate at about 8.1 Ma, which represents the oldest Late Tertiary deposit continuously in the central Loess Plateau. The magnetic susceptibility curves show stepwise increases since the initiation of red clay, superimposed on several peaks. Moreover, the magnetic susceptibility increased abruptly since 3.8 Ma, which probably indicates the inception of the modern East Asia monsoon system. Between 3.8 and 2.6 Ma, the stepwise increases of susceptibility may imply progressively intensified East Asia summer monsoon activity related with the stepwise uplift process of the Tibetan Plateau.

Many projects have recently been carried out and proposed for observing high energy electrons since it is realized that cosmic ray electrons are very important when studying the dark matter particles and the acceleration mechanism of cosmic rays. An imaging calorimeter, BETS （Balloon-borne Electron Telescope with Scintillator fiber）, has been developed for this purpose. Using pattern analysis of the shower development, the electrons can be selected from those primary cosmic ray proton events with flux heights one-tenth that of the electrons. The Monte-Carlo simulation is indispensable for the instrument design, the signal trigger and the data analysis. We present different shower simulation codes and compare the simulation results with the beam test and the flight data of BETS. We conclude that the code FLUKA2002 gives the most consistent results with the experimental data.

Reactive oxygen species （ROS） are harmful to all living organisms and therefore they must be removed to ensure normal growth and development. ROS are also signaling molecules, but so far little is known about the mecha- nisms of ROS perception and developmental response in plants. We here report that hydrogen peroxide induces cortex proliferation in the Arabidopsis root and that SPINDLY （SPY）, an O-linked glucosamine acetyltransferase, regulates cortex proliferation by maintaining cellular redox homeostasis. We also found that mutation in the leucine-rich receptor kinase ERECTA and its putative peptide ligand STOMAGEN block the effect of hydrogen peroxide on root cortex proliferation. However, ERECTA and STOMAGEN are expressed in the vascular tissue, whereas extra cortex cells are produced from the endodermis, suggesting the involvement of intercellular signaling~ SPY appears to act downstream of ERECTA, because the spy mutation still caused cortex proliferation in the erecta mutant background. We therefore have not only gained insight into the mechanism by which SPY regulates root development but also uncovered a novel pathway for ROS signal- ing in plants. The importance of redox-mediated cortex proliferation as a protective mechanism against oxidative stress is also discussed.

Numerical study is performed to investigate thermal wave propagation in a very thin film subjected to an asymmetrical temperature change on both sides. The non-Fourier, hyperbolic heat conduction equation is solved using a numerical technique based on MacCormak"s predictor-corrector scheme. Consideration is given to the time history of thermal wave behavior before and after asymmetrical collision of wave fronts from two sides of a film. It is disclosed that in transient heat conduction, a heat pulse is transported as a wave in the film, and that non-Fourier heat conduction is extremely significant with certain range of film thickness and time. That is, sudden heating on both sides of the extremely thin film causes temperature overshoot within a very short period of time.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase （MAPK） and leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase （LRR-RLK） signaling pathways have been shown to regulate diverse aspects of plant growth and development. In Arabidopsis, proper anther development relies on intercellular communication to coordinate cell proliferation and differentiation. Two closely related genes encoding MAPKs, MPK3 and MPK6, function redundantly in regulating stomatal patterning. Although the mpk6 mutant has reduced fertility, the function of MPK3 and MPK6 in anther development has not been characterized. Similarly, the ERECTA （ER）, ERECTA-LIKE1 （ERL1） and ERL2 genes encoding LRR-RLKs function together to direct stomatal cell fate specification and the er-105 erll-2 erl2-1 triple mutant is sterile. Because the mpk3 rnpk6 double null mutant is embryo lethal, anther development was characterized in the viable mpk3/＋ mpk6/- and er-105 erll-2 erl2-1 mutants. We found that both mutant anthers usually fail to form one or more of the four anther lobes, with the er-105 erl1-2 erl2-1 triple mutant exhibiting more severe phenotypes than those of the mpk3/＋ mpk6/- mutant. The somatic cell layers of the differentiated mutant lobes appeared larger and more disorganized than that of wild-type. In addition, the er-105 erll-2 erl2ol triple mutant has a reduced number of stamens, the majority of which possess completely undifferentiated or under-differentiated anthers. Furthermore, sometimes, the mpk3/＋ mpk6/- mutant anthers do not dehisce, and the er-105 erl1-2 erl2-1 anthers were not observed to dehisce. Therefore, our results indicate that both ER/ERL 1/ERL2 and MPK3/MPK6 play important roles in normal anther lobe formation and anther cell differentiation. The close functional relationship between these genes in other developmental processes and the similarities in anther developmental phenotypes of the two types of mutants reported here further suggest the possibility that these genes might also function in the same pathway

Thermal Fluid Flow Transport Characteristics in Confined Channels with Two Dimensional Dual Jet Impingement

The flow and heat transfer characteristics of laminar dual circular jet impinging on a heating plate with inclined confinement surface has been investigated numerically. Governing equations in steady state are solved by a control volume based finite-difference method. The simulations have been carried out for Reynolds number (250 ≤ Re ≤ 418), the angle of inclination of the confined upper wall (0 ≤ θ ≤ 10), circular jet to annular jet velocity ratio (0 ≤ VR ≤ 2) and jet to target plate distances between 2D and 8D where D is the outer diameter of dual jet. SIMPLE algorithm was used to obtain velocity and temperature fields. Hybrid difference scheme is adopted for the discretized terms in the governing equations. The discretised equations are solved iteratively using the tridiagonal matrix algorithm line solver. Heat transfer performance along the heated wall is amplified with an increase in the velocity ratio and the Reynolds number. On the contrary, a substantial reduction in the heat transfer rate, for VR = 0.0, occurs in the stagnation zone, because the absence of the inner nozzle injection causes the recirculation in the corresponding region. The heat transfer rate in the stagnation zone is attenuated by increasing the jet nozzle to impinging plate distance. In particular, the effect of the inclination angle in the down-stream region, especially at the vicinity of outlet, is major then other effects Nusselt number distribution on the impingement plate is affected by inclined upper wall because inclination of the wall accelerates the exhaust flow. The streamwise reduction in the heat transfer rate for θ=0? is suppressed by the presence of the inclined confinement surface and its value is intensified by the inclination angle.
