Human health is intimately connected and tied to the health of our environment and ecosystem,with only a very small fraction of the risk for chronic diseases explained by genetics *** animals are prone to disease types that are shared with people,including cancers and endocrine disorders,reinforcing the thought that environmental factors contribute to the risks for chronic *** factors include air and water pollution and the built *** such,there is increasing interest in pursuing research with companion animals,and specifically dogs,as sentinel species to inform comparative health assessments and identify risk factors for *** the canine diseases for which environmental exposure research has been published,cancers have received the most *** review summarizes two main aspects of this comparative approach:(1)cancers that occur in dogs and which are similar to humans and(2)research investigating environmental exposures and health outcomes in *** goal of this review is to highlight the diverse conditions in which pet dogs may provide unique perspectives and advantages to examine relationships between environmental exposures and health outcomes,with an emphasis on chemical pollution and ***,this review seeks to raise awareness and stimulate discussion around the best practices for the use of companion animals as environmental health sentinels.

Prevalence of historical and replacement brominated flame retardant chemicals in New York City homes

Background:Until their phase-out between 2005 and 2013,polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PBDEs)were added to household products including furniture,rugs,and electronics to meet flammability *** brominated flame retardant(BFR)chemicals,including 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate(TBB)and bis(2-ethylhexyl)2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate(TBPH),which are components of the Firemaster 550®commercial mixture,are now being used to meet some flammability standards in *** objective of this analysis was to evaluate the extent to which mothers and their children living in New York City are exposed to PBDEs,TBB,and ***:We measured PBDEs,TBB,and TBPH using gas chromatography mass spectrometry in dust(n=25)and handwipe(n?11)samples collected between 2012 and 2013 from mothers and children living in New York *** defined dust as enriched if the proportional distribution for a given BFR exceeded two-thirds of the total BFR ***:We detected PBDEs and TBPH in 100%of dust and handwipe samples and TBB in 100%of dust samples and 95%of handwipe *** from approximately two-thirds of households was enriched for either PBDEs(n?9)or for TBB t TBPH(n=8).Overall,the median house dust concentration of TBB+TBPH(1318 ng/g dust)was higher than that of SPentaBDE(802 ng/g dust)and BDE-209(1171 ng/g dust).Children generally had higher BFR handwipe concentrations compared to mothers(SPentaBDE:73%,BDE-209:64%,TBB t TBPH:55%)and within households,BFR concentrations from paired maternalchild handwipes were highly *** mothers,we found a significant positive relation between house dust and handwipe BDE-209 and TBB t TBPH ***:PBDEs,TBB and TBPH are ubiquitous in house dust and handwipes in a sample of motherchild pairs residing in New York City.

Experimental repetitive mild traumatic brain injury induces deficits in trabecular bone microarchitecture and strength in mice

To evaluate the long-term consequence of repetitive mild traumatic brain injury （mTBI） on bone, mTBI was induced in 10-week-old female C57BL/6J mice using a weight drop model, once per day for 4 consecutive days at different drop heights （0.5, 1 and 1.5 m） and the skeletal phenotype was evaluated at different time points after the impact. In vivo micro-CT （μ-CT） analysis of the tibial metaphysis at 2, 8 and 12 weeks after the impact revealed a 5%-32% reduction in trabecular bone mass. Histomorphometric analyses showed a reduced bone formation rate in the secondary spongiosa ofl.5 m impacted mice at 12 weeks post impact. Apparent modulus （bone strength）, was reduced by 30% （P 〈 0.05） at the proximal tibial metaphysis in the 1.5 m drop height group at 2 and 8 weeks post impact. Ex vivo μ-CT analysis of the fifth lumbar vertebra revealed a significant reduction in trabecular bone mass at 12 weeks of age in all three drop height groups. Serum levels of osteocalcin were decreased by 22%, 15%, and 19% in the 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m drop height groups, respectively, at 2 weeks post impact. Serum IGF-I levels were reduced by 18%-32% in mTBI mice compared to control mice at 2 weeks post impact. Serum osteocalcin and IGF-I levels correlated with trabecular BV/TV （r2 = 0.14 and 0.16, P 〈 0.05）. In conclusion, repetitive mTBI exerts significant negative effects on the trabecular bone microarchitecture and bone mechanical properties by influencing osteoblast function via reduced endocrine IGF-I actions.

Characterization of the surface and interfacial properties of the lamina splendens

Joint disease affects approximately 52.5 mil- lion patients in the United States alone, costing 80.8 billion USD in direct healthcare costs. The development of treatment programs for joint disease and trauma requires accurate assessment of articular cartilage degradation. The articular cartilage is the interfacial tissue between articu- lating surfaces, such as bones, and acts as low-friction interfaces. Damage to the lamina splendens, which is the articular cartilage＇s topmost layer, is an early indicator of joint degradation caused by injury or disease. By gaining comprehensive knowledge on the lamina splendens, particularly its structure and interfacial properties, researchers could enhance the accuracy of human and animal biomechanical models, as well as develop appro- priate biomimetic materials for replacing damaged articu- lar cartilage, thereby leading to rational treatment programs for joint disease and injury. Previous studies that utilize light, electron, and force microscopy techniques have found that the lamina splendens is composed of collagen fibers oriented parallel to the cartilage surface and encased in a proteoglycan matrix. Such orientation maximizes wear resistance and proteoglycan retention while promoting the passage of nutrients and synovial fluid. Although the structure of the lamina splendens has been explored in the literature, the low-friction interface of this tissue remains only partially characterized. Various functional models are currently available for the interface, such as pure boundary lubrication, thin films exuded under pressure, and sheets of trapped proteins. Recent studies suggest that each of these lubrication models has certain advantages over one another. Further research is needed to fully model the interface of this tissue. In this review, we summarize the methods for characterizing the lamina splendens and the results of each method. High-performance oxygen reduction catalysts in both alkaline and acidic fuel cells based on pre-treating carbon material and iron precursor

We demonstrate a new and simple method for pre-treating the carbon material and iron precursor to prepare oxygen reduction reaction(ORR) catalysts, which can produce super-high performance and stability in alkaline solution, with high performance in acid solution. This strategy using cheap materials is simply controllable. moreover, it has achieved smaller uniform nanoparticles to exhibit high stability, and the synergetic effect of Fe and N offered much higher performance in ORR than commercial Pt/C, with high maximum power density in alkaline and acid fuel cell test. So it can make this kind of catalysts be the most promising alternatives of Pt-based catalysts with best performance/price.
