Effects of Changtai granules, a traditional compound Chinese medicine, on chronic trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced colitis in rats

AIM: To study the effects of Changtai granules (CTG), a traditional compound Chinese medicine, on chronic trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced colitis in rats. METHODS: healthy adult Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats of both sexes, weighing 250-300 g, were employed in the present study. The rat colitis models were induced by 2, 4,6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) enemas at a concentration of 100 mg/kg in 50% ethanol. The experimental animals were randomly divided into dexamethasone (DX) treatment, CTG treatment, and model control groups, which were intracolicly treated daily with DX (0.2 mg/kg), CTG at doses of 2.9, 5.7 and 11.4 g crude drug/kg, and the equal amount of saline respectively from 6 h following induction of the colitis in rats inflicted with TNBS to the end of study. A normal control group of rats treated without TNBS but saline enema was also included in the study. After 3 wk of treatment, the animals were assessed for colonal inflammatory and ulcerative responses with respect to mortality, frequency of diarrhea, histology and myeloperoxidase activity (MPO).REsuLTS: The therapeutic effect of CTG on ulcerative colitis (UC) was better than DX. CTG effectively inhibited the activity of granulocytes, macrophages and monocytes in a dosedependent manner. Also it reduced MPO and formation of inflammation in colonic mucosal tissue. furthermore, administration of CTG significantly prevented body mass loss and death, and decreased frequency of diarrhea in UC rats, when compared with the model control group ***: CTG would prove to be an ideal drug for chronic UC, and is warranted to be studied further.

Inhibitors of 5-lipoxygenase inhibit expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 in human melanoma cells

AIM: To study the effect of 5-lipoxygenase inhibitors on the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) inmelanoma cells. METHODS: ICAM-1 protein of human melanoma cell a375 was detected by enzyme-linkedimmunosorbent, flow cytometry and Western blot analysis. Level of ICAM-1 mRNA in a375 was evaluated byNorthern blot analysis. Adhesion of a375 to endothelial cell EC304 was analyzed by isotopic tracing. REsuLTS:5-Lipoxygenase inhibitors nordihydroguaiaretic acid, AA861 and MK886, could suppress the expression of ICAM-1protein as well as of its mRNA in a375 cells and reduce the adhesion of a375 to EC304. CONCLUSION:5-Lipoxygenase inhibitors can inhibit the expression of ICAM-1 in human melanoma cells and may be valuable fortreatment of melanoma metastasis.

Candida albicans is the most frequently isolated fungus in immunocompromised patientsassociated with mucosal and deep-tissue *** investigate the correlation between virulence andresistance on a gene expression profile in ***,we examined the changes in virulence-related genesduring the development of resistance in *** from bone marrow transplant patients using a constructedcDNA array representing 3096 *** addition to the genes known to be associated with azole resistance,16 virulence-related genes were identified,whose differential expressions were newly found to be associatedwith the resistant *** expressions for these genes were confirmed by ***,the up-regulation of EFG1,CPH2,TEC1,CDC24,SAP10,ALS9,SNF1,SPO72and BDF1,and the down-regulation of RAD32,IPF3636 and UBI4 resulted in stronger virulence andinvasiveness in the resistant isolates compared with susceptible *** findings provide a link betweenthe expression of virulence genes and development of resistance during *** infection in bone marrowtransplant (BMT) patients,where *** induces hyphal formation and expression change in multiplevirulence factors.

Background:hepatectomy is the preferred treatment for solitary hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)without macrovascular invasion and distant metastasis,but long-term survival remains unsatisfactory in certain *** sought to identify whether the grading severity of microscopic vascular invasion(MVI)was associated with recurrence and survival among patients with solitary ***:Consecutive patients who underwent hepatectomy for solitary HCC were identified from a multicenter prospectively-collected *** were categorized into three groups according to the MVI grading system proposed by the Liver Cancer Pathology Group of china:M0(no MVI),M1(1-5 sites of MVI occurring≤1.0 cm away from the tumor),and M2(>5 sites occurring≤1.0 cm or any site occurring>1 cm away from the tumor).Recurrence-free survival(RFS)and overall survival(OS)were compared among the ***:Among 227 patients,97(42.7%),83(36.6%),and 47(20.7%)patients had M0,M1,and M2,*** RFS rates among patients with M0,M1,and M2 were 38.3,35.1,11.6 months,respectively,while OS rates were 66.8,62.3,30.6 months,respectively(both P2 were independent risk factors for RFS(hazard ratio 1.20,95%CI:1.03-1.89,P=0.040;and hazard ratio 1.67,95%CI:1.06-2.64,P=0.027)and OS(hazard ratio 1.28,95%CI:1.05-2.07,P=0.035;and hazard ratio 1.97,95%CI:1.15-3.38,P=0.013).Conclusions:Grading severity of MVI was independently associated with RFS and OS after hepatectomy for solitary *** surveillance for recurrence and potentially adjuvant therapy may be considered for patients with MVI,especially individuals with more severe MVI grading(M2).

BACKGROUND This study employs a descriptive phenomenological approach to investigate the challenges anesthesia nurses face in managing emergence delirium(ED),a common and complex postoperative complication in the post-anesthesia care *** role of nurses in managing ED is critical,yet research on their understanding and management strategies for ED is *** To investigate anesthetic nurses’cognition and management experiences of ED in hopes of developing a standardized management *** This study employed a descriptive phenomenological approach from qualitative research *** sampling was utilized to select 12 anesthetic nurses from a tertiary hospital in shanghai as research ***-structured interviews were conducted,and the data were organized and analyzed using Colaizzi’s seven-step analysis method,from which the final themes were *** After analyzing the interview content,four main themes and eight subthemes were distilled:Inefficient cognition hinders the identification of ED(conceptual ambiguity,empirical identification),managing diversity and challenges(patientcentered safe care,low level of medical-nursing collaboration),work responsibilities and pressure coexist(heavy work responsibilities,occupational risks and stress),demand for high-quality management(expecting the construction of predictive assessment tools and prevention strategies,and pursuing standardized management processes to enhance management effectiveness).CONCLUSION Nursing managers should prioritize the needs and suggestions of nurses in order to enhance their nursing capabilities and provide guidance for standardized management processes.

Kawasaki disease(KD)is a disorder of immune *** prevalence of KD among 100,000 children aged 0-4 years was 71.9-110.0 in china,170.9-194.9 in Korea,and 18.1-21.3 in the USA[1].The most severe complication of KD is coronary artery lesions(CALs),including coronary dilatation and coronary aneurysms,which may even lead to myocardial ischemia,myocardial infarction,and sudden death.
