Effect of ZVAD-fmk on hepatocyte apoptosis after bile duct ligation in rat

AIM: Retention and accumulation of toxic hydrophobic bile salts within hepatocyte may cause hepatocyte toxicity by inducing apoptosis. Apoptosis is a pathway of cell death orchestrated by a family of proteases called caspases. Z-ValAla-Asp (OMe)-fluoromethyl ketone (ZVAD-fmk) is a cellpermeable irreversible inhibitor of caspase. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the possible effect of ZVAD-fmk on hepatocyte apoptosis after bile duct ligation in the ***: Male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 250-300 g,were randomized to five groups of five rats each. Group 1 underwent common bile duct ligation and simultaneous treatment with ZVAD-fmk (dissolved in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)). Group 2 underwent common bile duct ligation and simultaneous treatment with Z-Phe-Ala-fluoromethyl ketone ( ZFA-fmk, dissolved in DMSO). Group 3 underwent sham operation and simultaneous treatment with the same amount of DMSO. Group 4 underwent sham operation and simultaneous treatment with the same amount of normal saline. Group 5 underwent common bile duct ligation without other manipulation. After three days, liver tissue was harvested for histopathologic analysis and measurements of ***: When compared with sham operation, common bile duct ligation significantly increased hepatocyte apoptosis (P= 0.008) and ductular proliferation (P= 0.007).ZVAD-fmk significantly diminished the increased hepatocyte apoptosis and ductular proliferation after common bile duct ligation (P = 0.008 and P = 0.007, respectively). ZFA did not show the same ***: Hepatocyte apoptosis and ductular proliferation significantly increased after common bile duct ligation. ZVAD-fmk effectively diminished the increased hepatocyte apoptosis and ductular proliferation after common bile duct ligation, whereas ZFA-fmk did not.

Screening of Commercial Herbicides for Controlling Algae Growth in Aquarium

This study was conducted to screen the commercial herbicides for algae control in the aquarium. Three herbicides of ametryn, atrazine and metribuzine were tested at concentrations ranging from 0.625 to 10.00 ppm. It is found that ametryn was the most effective herbicide that inhibited algal growth. Ametryn concentration that caused 50% inhibition on algae growth after exposure for 21 days was 0.335 ppm. Survival rate of oruamental fish, Harlequin rasbora （Trigonostigma heteromorpha） and growth rate of aquatic plant （Elodea canadensis） exposed to 10 ppm ametryn were compared with those exposed to algaecide. The result showed that there was no significant difference in survival rate of Harlequin rasbora when exposed to ametryn, algaecide and dechlorinized tap water （control）. However, growth rate of E. canadensis was lower after exposure of ametryn compared to those exposed to algaecide and tap water. These results suggest that ametryn has potential to be used as an algal inhibitor in aquarium.

Infertility is a severe public health problem worldwide that prevails up to 15% in reproductive-age couples,and male infertility accounts for half of total *** on genetically modified animal models have identifed lots of genes involved in the pathogenesis of male *** underlying causes,however,remain largely *** this study,we provide evidence that EMCIO,one subunit of endoplasmic reticulum (ER)membrane protein complex (EMC),is required for male ***10 is significantly decreased in spermatozoa from patients with asthenozoospermia and positively associated with human sperm motility. Male mice lacking Emc10 gene are completely ***10-null spermatozoa exhibit multiple defects including abnormal morphology,decreased motility,impaired capacitation,and impotency of acrosome reaction,thereby which are incapable of fertilizing intact or ZP-free ***,intracytoplasmic sperm injection could rescue this defect caused by EMC10 deletion. Mechanistically,EMC10 deficiency leads to inactivation of Na/K-ATPase,in turn giving rise to an increased level of intraceltutar Na^+ in spermatozoa,which contributes to decreased sperm motility and abnormal *** mechanistic investigations demonstrate that the absence of EMC10 results in a reduction of HCO3^- entry and subsequent decreases of both cAMP-dependent protein kinase A substrate phosphorylation and protein tyrosine *** data demonstrate that EMC10 is indispensable to mate fertility via maintaining sperm ion balance of Na^+ and HCO3^-,and also suggest that EMC10 is a promising biomarker for male fertility and a potential pharmaceutical target to treat male infertility.

This research paper discussed the usage of watermarking in medical images to ensure the authenticity and integrity of the image and reviewed some watermarking schemes that had been developed. A design of a reversible tamper detection and recovery watermarking scheme was then proposed. The watermarking scheme uses a 640x480x8 bits ultrasound grayscale image as a sample. The concept of ROI （Region Of Interest） and RONI （Region Of Non Interest） were applied. Watermark embedded can be used to detect tampering and recovery of the image can be done. The watermark is also reversible.

Bulk metallic glasses(BMGs)have been developed as a means to achieve durable multiscale,nanotextured surfaces with desirable properties dictated by topography for a multitude of *** barrier to this achievement is the lack of a bridging technique between macroscale thermoplastic forming and nanoimprint lithography,which arises from the difficulty and cost of generating controlled nanostructures on complex geometries using conventional top-down *** difficulty is compounded by the necessary destruction of any resulting reentrant structures during rigid *** have developed a generalized method to overcome this limitation by sacrificial template imprinting using zinc oxide(ZnO)*** is established that such structures can be grown inexpensively and quickly with tunable morphologies on a wide variety of substrates out of solution,which we exploit to generate the nanoscale portion of the multiscale pattern through this bottom-up *** this way,we achieve metallic structures that simultaneously demonstrate features from the macroscale down to the nanoscale,requiring only the top-down fabrication of macro/microstructured *** detachment of the formed part from the multiscale molds,the ZnO remains embedded in the surface and can be removed by etching in mild conditions to both regenerate the mold and render the surface of the BMGs *** ability to pattern metallic surfaces in a single step on length scales from centimeters down to nanometers is a critical step toward fabricating devices with complex shapes that rely on multiscale topography for their intended functions,such as biomedical and electrochemical applications.

Cost-effectiveness of Crohn's disease post-operative care

AIM: To define the cost-effectiveness of strategies, including endoscopy and immunosuppression, to prevent endoscopic recurrence of Crohn’s disease following intestinal ***: In the “POCER” study patients undergoing intestinal resection were treated with post-operative drug therapy. Two thirds were randomized to active care (6 mo colonoscopy and drug intensification for endoscopic recurrence) and one third to drug therapy without early endoscopy. Colonoscopy at 18 mo and faecal calprotectin (FC) measurement were used to assess disease recurrence. Administrative data, chart review and patient questionnaires were collected prospectively over 18 ***: Sixty patients (active care n = 43, standard care n = 17) were included from one health service. Median total health care cost was $6440 per patient. Active care cost $4824 more than standard care over 18 mo. Medication accounted for 78% of total cost, of which 90% was for adalimumab. Median health care cost was higher for those with endoscopic recurrence compared to those in remission [$26347 (IQR 25045-27485) vs $2729 (IQR 1182-5215), P < 0.001]. FC to select patients for colonoscopy could reduce cost by $1010 per patient over 18 mo. Active care was associated with 18% decreased endoscopic recurrence, costing $861 for each recurrence ***: Post-operative management strategies are associated with high cost, primarily medication related. Calprotectin use reduces costs. The long term cost-benefit of these strategies remains to be evaluated.

The?invasion?of?the?mandible?by?oral?squamous?cell?carcinoma?has?been?firmly?demonstrated?by?anatomical?and?histological?***?squamous?cell?carcinomas?may?induce?resorption?of?the?roots?of?standing?teeth,?there?have?been?no?reports?of?them?also?causing?resorption?of?the?crowns?of?teeth. A?73-year-old?patient?presented?with?an?invading?buccal?squamous?cell?carcinoma. Radiological?investigations?showed?tumour?invasion?of?the?dentate?region?of?the?left?mandible?and?resorption?of?the?crowns?of?right?and?left?mandibular?impacted?third?molars. The?patient?underwent?a?left?segmental?mandibulectomy?and?histopathological?examination?of?the?resected?specimen?revealed?resorption?of?the?enamel?and?dentine?of?an?unerupted?impacted?third?molar?closely?associated?with?the?infiltrating?tumour. Thus?infiltrating?carcinomas?may?rarely?cause?resorption?of?the?crowns?as?well?as?the?roots?of?unerupted?teeth?and?can?be?a?valuable?marker?of?the?extent?of?spread?of?a?tumour?for?the?planning?of?complete?surgical?resection. We propose theoretically and demonstrate experimentally the generation of light pulses whose polarization varies temporally to cover selected areas of the Poincare´sphere with both tunable swirling speed and total duration(1 ps and 10 ps,respectively,in our implementation).The effect relies on the Rabi oscillations of two polariton polarized fields excited by two counter-polarized and delayed *** superposition of the oscillating fields result in the precession of the Stokes vector of the emitted light while polariton lifetime imbalance results in its drift from a circle of controllable radius on the Poincare´sphere to a single point at long *** positioning of the initial circle and final point allows to engineer the type of polarization spanning,including a full sweeping of the Poincare´*** universality and simplicity of the scheme should allow for the deployment of time-varying full-Poincare´polarization fields in a variety of platforms,timescales,and regimes.
