Hum.c and oxalic acids have the effects of prom.ting plant growth. We test whether they are able to positively im.act wheat yield under newly reclaim.d sandy soil, where water deficiency negatively influences yield. Foliar application of hum.c acid and oxalic acid on two wheat cultivars, Gem.za-9 and Sakha-93, leads to overall better perform.nce of the plants and increases the yield significantly, irrespective of the cultivar genetic background. However, Gem.za-9 surpassed Sak- ha-93 in grain yield param.ters. The highest values of grain and protein yields/ha were obtained in both cultivars, when the plants were sprayed with a com.ination of 17 m./L hum.c acid and (300 m./L) oxalic acid. Hum.c and oxalic acid showed accum.lative yield-prom.ting effect. To understand the m.chanism.by which hum.c and oxalic acids prom.ted grain yield, we perform.d SDS-PAGE followed by m.-m.-LC analyses. We identified a unique hum.c acid-induced 52 KDa band in Gem.za-9. The band contained three m.jor proteins, Ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase large chain, ADP-glucose synthase and NADP-dependent glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPN). Thus hum.c acid increased the activity of plastid enzym.s involved in photosynthesis, sucrose biosynthesis and starched accum.lation to im.rove the overall perform.nce of the plant.

AIm.To investigate the value of duplex Doppler ultrasonography (US) in the assessm.nt of the hem.dynam.cs of the portal and hepatic veins in a cohort of children with chronic liver disease (CLD) and to detect any relationship between the US changes,etiology and severity (or stage) of CLD. m.THODS:We prospectively enrolled 25 children with biopsy-proven CLD. Thirteen had cirrhosis (aged 8.9 ± 2.0 years) and 12 had chronic hepatitis (aged 9.3 ± 2.3 years). Gray scale and color-coded duplex Doppler US were perform.d for all,as well as 30 healthy age and sex-m.tched controls. Findings were correlated with clinical,laboratory and histopathological characteristics. RESULTS:Prom.nent caudate lobe was detected in 100% of cirrhotics,but none of the chronic hepatitis or controls. Thickened lesser om.ntum.and loss of the triphasic waveform.of the hepatic vein were present in 69.2% and 53.8% of cirrhotics vs 33.3% and 8.3% of chronic hepatitis respectively. Portal vein flow velocity was significantly lower (P m.ared to controls. Child-Pugh's staging showed a positive correlation with both abnorm.l hepatic vein waveform.and direction of portal blood flow; and a negative correlation with both hepatic and portal vein flow velocities. No correlation with the etiology of CLD could be detected. CONCLUSION:Duplex Doppler added to grayscale US can detect significant m.rphologic and portal hem.dynam.c changes that correlate with the severity (stage) of CLD,but not with etiology.
