Synergetic effect of Egyptian propolis in immunization of BALB/c mice against bovine cysticercosis

Objective: To evaluate the synergetic effect of an ethanolic extract of Egyptian propolis in immunization of BALB/c mice with Taenia saginata(T. saginata) crude antigen against bovine cysticercosis, with reference to its effects on liver and kidney ***: Sixty female mice BALB/c strain weighing 20 to 25 g and 6-8 weeks old were randomly allocated into six groups of ten mice each. Mice in groups 1 and 2(G1 and G2) were immunized intraperitoneally with 100 μg of T. saginata crude antigen in 100 μL phosphate buffer saline emulsified in Freund's adjuvant. Besides, the mice in G2 were administered with propolis extract simultaneously with immunization. Control mice were either administered with propolis extract(G3) or injected with the same volume of phosphate buffer saline emulsified in Freund's adjuvant(G4). The mice in G5 were non-immunized infected control while, those in G6 were non-immunized non-infected control. Two weeks after the last immunization, each mouse was challenged intraperitoneally with 5 000 oncospheres except those of G6. Ethanolic extract of propolis was prepared at a dose 50 mg/kg body ***: After 24 weeks of challenge, the mice in G2 showed the highest level of protection(100%), with no cyst being detected rather than mice in G1(33.3% protection). Additionally,the ELISA results, in this study, showed higher antibody titer in G2 with reduction the alteration in liver and kidney functions compared to ***: Egyptian propolis could increase the level of protection against experimental challenge infection with T. saginata eggs when administered simultaneously with immunization. Furthermore, it could enhance the production of antibodies to immunized antigen and decrease the alteration in liver and kidney functions.

Background: Retroperitoneal heamorrahge is an acute surgical condition that is associated with difficulty of diagnosis, organ injuries and mortality. Materials and Methods: One hundred and two patients with traumatic retroperitoneal hematoma treated in Al Yarmuk teaching hospital from May 2012 to January 2013 were reviewed retrospectively. The data include patient’s age, type of injury, presenting symptoms, associated injuries and common site of hematoma. Results: In 102 patients, 69 were males (67.6%) and 33 were females (32.3%), mean age of 22 years. The comments presenting symptoms was pain (85.2%), followed by tenderness (73.5%) and shock (58.8%). Around 38.2% were injured by blunt trauma and 61.8% by penetrating trauma. The large bowel was the most common affected organ 26.4%, spleen and kidneys were the second affected organ (23.5%) while the jejunum and ileum were the third associated organs to be affected (14.7%). The commonest complication was septicemia, followed by wound infection. The least reported complications were Pulmonary embolism, Fistula, and Intestinal Obstruction. Conclusion: Traumatic retroperitoneal hematoma is life-threatening condition, early diagnosis and correct treatment is of upmost importance.

Comparative Study of Surgical Approaches for Distractive Flexion Injuries of Sub-Axial Cervical Spine

Distractive flexion injuries (DFI) of subaxial cervical spine are common after motor car accident or falling from height. The ideal surgical approaches to DFI are still unclear. A retrospective comparative study of surgical approaches for DFI of sub-axial cervical spine involved 60 patients throughout the years 2014 to 2016 at Al-Azhar University Hospitals. All patients were undergoing initial routine resuscitative measures, full general and neurological examinations. Neurologic function was assessed according to modified Frankel’s grading. All patients were received cervical plain antero-posterior, lateral and oblique X-ray, CT with 3D and MRI of cervical spine. Severity of DFI injury was assessed according to Allen and Ferguson’s classification. The most common level involved was C5-6 and most common grade was grade 3. The patients operated through anterior approach were 36 patients and through the posterior approach were 24 patients. Restoring cervical alignment was achieved in 29 patients (80.56%). The mean time of bone fusion was 5.454 months in anterior approach while it was 9.876 months in posterior approach. The extend of bone fusion was good in 30 patients (83.33%) after anterior approach and in 8 patients (33.33%) after posterior approach, while poor fusion was observed in 6 patients (16.67%) after anterior approach and 16 patients (66.67%) after posterior approach. We can conclude that anterior cervical approach is better in DFI stage 3 and 4 where there are associated ruptured intervertebral disc. Posterior approach is better in DFI stage 1 and 2 with or with presence of posterior compressing lesion.

Rheological Properties of Cement-Based Grouts Determined by Different Techniques

The rheological properties of cement-based grouts containing talc or palygorskite were investigated for optimizing fluidity and quick strengthening at injection. The fluidity controls the ability of grout to penetrate fractures and can be determined by pipe flow tests, Marsh funnel tests, mini-slump cone tests and rheometer tests. The grouts were 1) Talc for fluidity and strength by reacting with cement, 2) Palygorskite (attapulgite) for early gelation by being thixotropic, and 3) Powdered quartz for chemical integrity. The freshly prepared grouts behaved as Bingham fluids with viscosities from 0.151 to 0.464 Pas and yield stresses 5.2 Pa to 36.7 Pa. Statistical analysis of the flow test data converted Marsh flow time into viscosity. The pipe flow tests gave 26.5% higher values than the viscometer for grout with Portland cement and talc, and about 13.7% lower than the viscometer data for the grout with low-pH cement and talc. The big Marsh funnel gave values differing by 5.2% - 5.3% from those of the viscometer for grout with talc and Portland, and Merit 5000 cements. For grout with palygorskite the viscosity was at least twice that of the other grouts. Grout fluidity was positively affected by talc and negatively by palygorskite and early cement hydration.

稠油储量约为常规石油的十倍,是重要的石油资源。然而,稠油黏度大,胶质、沥青质含量高,使得稠油开采十分困难,不仅开采成本较高,同时造成诸多生态环境污染问题。因此,开发井下稠油原位改质技术逐渐成为研究热点。本文研究过渡金属催化剂参与的稠油原位改质技术,利用介质阻挡放电等离子体制备了Ni/γ-AlO、Ni-Cu/γ-AlO两种催化剂。介质阻挡放电等离子体属于低温等离子体,具有较高的电子温度(>1000 K)与较低的气体温度(300～500 K),有利于金属催化剂的高效制备,可有效防止催化剂制备过程中的过度烧结。将制备的催化剂用于稠油改质研究,实现了较低温度下快速降粘。此外,通过稠油族组分分析、产物分析及催化剂表征,讨论了稠油催化改质反应机制,厘清催化反应过程与提高稠油降粘率间的联系,为进一步优化稠油原位催化改质研究做铺垫。本文的主要结论是:1.通过介质阻挡放电制备的催化剂,Ni、Cu可均匀分布在γ-AlO表面,并呈现为纳米颗粒,极大增加了反应位点与催化活性;2.在放电制备Ni催化剂过程中,Cu的添加可有效降低催化反应温度,实现在低温下催化反应,且可有效提高催化剂的稳定性,不易失活;3.稠油催化改质后,重质组分(胶质、沥青质)快速降低,同时轻质组分得到有效提升,同时实现了降粘与改质;4.稠油催化改质的机理主要为通过加氢、部分氧化,及水热反应,实现稠油组分中硫、氮、氧元素的高效脱除,进而实现稠油的改质降粘。

Objective:To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of black cumin seed oil(BCSO)and its nanoemulsion on lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-induced liver injury in ***:LPS-induced acute liver injury mouse model was used to evaluate the effects of BCSO and its nanoemulsion formulation on liver *** inflammatory markers including Toll-like receptor 4(TLR4),interleukin(IL)-1β,heme-oxygenase 1,BAX,and BCL-2 were assessed using real-time ***,protein levels of reduced glutathione,tumor necrosis factor-α,and IL-6 were measured using ELISA,and histological analysis was *** was used as a standard positive control for ***:BCSO reduced LPS-induced liver injury and exhibited strong anti-inflammatory effects by downregulating the expression of TLR4,IL-1β,IL-6,tumor necrosis factor-α,and heme-oxygenase ***,BCSO demonstrated antioxidant properties by increasing reduced glutathione protein levels and decreasing key apoptotic markers BAX and BCL-2 in *** nanoemulsion formulation further enhanced these anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and anti-apoptotic effects,and histological examination confirmed this *** BCSO with indomethacin at a lower dose improved efficacy,thereby reducing its potential side ***:The investigation reveals the anti-inflammatory impact of BCSO and its nanoemulsion formulation on LPS-induced liver oxidative stress,inflammation,and apoptosis.

AIM： To assess changes in peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer （RNFL） thickness and visual field （VF） in patients with glaucoma after reduction of intraocular pressure （IOP）. METHODS： Thirty-five consecutive patients with bilat-eral high tension glaucoma were included in the study. Thirty-five eyes underwent monocular deep sclerectomy （surgery group） and the medically treated fellow eyes served as controls （control group）. Quantitative analyses of the peripapillary RNFL thickness by optical coherence tomography （OCT） and global VF indices by automated perimetry were performed before surgery and six months after surgery in both eyes. The changes in RNFL thickness overall and by quadrant were evalu-ated and studied with respect to age, best-corrected visual acuity （BCVA）, preoperative global VF indices, postoperative IOP changes, and postoperative changes in global VF indices. Changes observed in RNFL thickness and VF indices were compared between eyes after surgery and fellow eyes. RESULTS： Six months after surgery, the overall IOP decreased from a baseline mean of 24.5 ± 3.2 mmHg to 11.5 ± 2.7 mmHg （P 〈 0.001） at the time of OCT testing. A signifcant increase in the overall mean RNFL thickness was observed after surgery （P 〈 0.001）. The preoperative VF mean deviation was significantly cor-related with a postoperative increase in the RNFL thick-ness （P 〈 0.075）. No correlation was found between RNFL thickness changes and age, BCVA, or changes in the global VF indices. There was no significant difference between eyes with an IOP reduction of more than 50% and those with a reduction in IOP less than 30% （ P = 0.312）.CONCLUSION： A signifcant increase in the peripapil-lary RNFL thickness was associated with IOP reduction by glaucoma filtration surgery as measured by OCT.

This study was proposed to develop a new method for hydrogen production in significant amounts. It consisted in using sulfur dioxide (SO2), and discharged from the sulfuric acid (H2SO4) production unit. This process could be considered as an alternative to many classical processes for air quality treatment resulting in as afer environment. Furthermore, it was an innovative method for hydrogen production. In fact, SO2 was fed into a PEM electrolyzer stack. The dissolved SO2 was oxidized at the anode which led to the production of sulfuric acid;whereas, hydrogen (H2) was produced at the cathode. This new method was able to treat 3.7 t/day of SO22 in order to produce 0.116 t/day of hydrogen and recover 5.6 t/day of 35 wt.% H2SO4. Results showed that the studied procedure was more economical in terms of energy consumption than the Westinghouse hybrid process. Hence, 67% of the energy needed for the decomposition step was reduced by our proposed process. After the presentation of the principles of the new process design, each part of the process was sized. The calculations showed that the number of electrolyzers could be calculated using the same formula used for the number of electrolyzers for water electrolysis or flux cell.

Experimental Investigation of Natural Fiber Reinforced Polymers

The potential usage of virgin Low density polyethelyne (LDPE) reinforced with different concentrations (2%, 5% and 6% by weight) of treated rice straw with different lengths (2 mm, 4 mm and 6 mm) is investigated to produce high value products that have technical and environmental demand. The two treatment methods used for rice straw are alkali and acidic treatments of rice straw. The removal of impurities and waxy substances from fiber surface avoid creation of rougher topography after treatment and improves the quality of fiber, also content of hemi cellulose and lignin decrease so increase effectiveness of fiber due to dispersing of fiber in matrix. The reinforcing material is embedded in the matrix material to enhance tensile and flexural behaviors of the synthesized composite. The result of investigating these two mechanical properties, using statistical analysis & design of experiments, showed an enhancement in the mechaniccal properties of the virgin polymer composite compared to the virgin polymer. The flexural stress of the composite increased three times the virgin flexural stress, while the tensile stress increased eight times the original tensile stress.
