A non-destructive and in-situ technique for the measurement of tritium in materials, namely β-ray-induced X-ray spectrometry （BIXS）, has been developed recently. In the present study a V-4Cr-4Ti alloy was pre-heated at 1000℃ for 2 h to form a recrystallization structure before the tritium absorption experiments were conducted. Firstly the hydrogen isotope gas was charazterized by means of a quadrupole mass spectrometer （QmS） and a small-sized ionization chamber. Then hydrogen isotope absorption tests of V-4Cr-4Ti alloy were performed at 400 ℃ and the atomic concentration of hydrogen isotope in V-4Cr-4Ti alloy was estimated as 0.17% with a tritium content of approximately 2.5 ppm. Experimental results indicate that BIXS is a quite useful tool for quantitatively measuring the tritium content and tritium distribution in the surface layers of vanadium alloys and no strong trapping effects of tritium exist in the pre-heated V-4Cr-4Ti alloy.

microscopes in vacuum ultraviolet and soft X-ray regions using a normal incidence type of Schwarzschild objective are reviewed. The objective consists of a concave mirror and a convex mirror coated with a high reflectance multilayer,having a large numerical aperture comparing with other objectives. The microscopes have been used to diagnose inertia-confinement-fusion plasmas,and to investigate small samples or microstructures of in- organic and organic materials by imaging them using laboratory light sources. Synchrotron radiation has been also used to obtain a microbeam for a photoelectron scanning microscope with a spatial resolution of 0.1 μm. The struc- ture and performance of two laboratory microscopes developed at Tohoku University are demonstrated. One of them is a soft X-ray emission imaging microscope. An image of an artificial pattern made of W and SiO2 on Si wafer by focusing Si L emission was presented. The other is an ultraviolet photoelectron scanning microscope using a He (he- lium) gas discharge lamp. The valence band spectra of a microcrystal of FeWO4 were presented. Furthermore other applications such as demagnifying optics for lithography and optics to gather fluorescence for emission spectroscopy are introduced.

Diffusivity models and Greenhouse Gases Fluxes from a Forest,Pasture,Grassland and Corn Field in Northern Hokkaido,Japan

Information on the most influential factors determining gas flux from soils is needed in predictive models for greenhouse gases emissions. We conducted an intensive soil and air sampling along a 2 000 m transect extending from a forest, pasture, grassland and corn field in Shizunai, Hokkaido （Japan）, measured CO2, CH4, N20 and NO fluxes and calculated soil bulk density （Pb）, air-filled porosity （fa） and total porosity （Ф）. Using diffusivity models based on either fa alone or on a combination of fa and 4, we predicted two pore space indices： the relative gas diffusion coefficient （Ds/Do） and the pore tortuosity factor （T）. The relationships between pore space indices （Ds/Do and T） and C02, CH4, N2O and NO fluxes were also studied. Results showed that the grassland had the highest Pb while fa and Ф were the highest in the forest. CO2, CH4, N20 and NO fluxes were the highest in the grassland while N20 dominated in the corn field. Few correlations existed between fa, Ф, Pb and gases fluxes while all models predicted that Ds/Do and T significantly correlated with CO2 and CH4 with correlation coefficient （r） ranging from 0.20 to 0.80. Overall, diffusivity models based on fa alone gave higher Ds/Do, lower τ, and higher R2 and better explained the relationship between pore space indices （Ds/Do and τ） and gases fluxes. Inclusion of Ds/Do and τ in predictive models will improve our understanding of the dynamics of greenhouse gas fluxes from soils. Ds/Do and τ can be easily obtained by measurements of soil air and water and existing diffusivity models.

To analyze the effect of agricultural activity on nitrogen(N) budget at the watershed scale,a comparative study was conducted at two Japanese watersheds,the Shibetsu River watershed(SRW) and Upper-Naka River watershed(UNRW),and one Chinese watershed,the Jurong Reservoir watershed(JRW).The total area and the proportion of agricultural area(in parentheses) of the watersheds were 685(51%),1 299(21%),and 46 km 2(55%) for SRW,UNRW,and JRW,*** main agricultural land use in SRW was forage grassland,while paddy fields occupied the highest proportion of cropland in UNRW(11% of total area) and JRW(31% of total area).The farmland surplus N was 61,48,and 205 kg N ha 1 year 1 for SRW,UNRW,and JRW,*** total input and output for the whole watershed were 89 and 76,83 and 61,and 353 and 176 kg N ha 1 year 1 for SRW,UNRW,and JRW,*** proportion of discharged N to net anthropogenic N input was 31%,37%,and 1.7% for SRW,UNRW,and JRW,*** two watersheds in Japan showed similar proportions of discharged N to those of previous reports,while the watershed in China(JRW) showed a totally different characteristic compared to previous *** high N input in JRW did not increase the amount of discharged N at the outlet of the watershed due to high proportions of paddy fields and water bodies,which was an underestimated N sink at the landscape scale.

This study herein was investigated the removal of chromium(VI) from an aqueous solution using persimmon tannin gel and its subsequent recovery as chromium(III). At pH 2, Cr(VI) was effectively adsorbed (~80% adsorption) and ppm solution was reduced to Cr(III) on the persimmon gel within 10 min. Although desorption of the Cr(III) species was challenging at 30°, it was increased upon increasing the temperature and was quantitatively desorbed in the presence of 1 m hydrochloric acid under reflux. In addition, although the quantity of retained Cr(VI) on the tannin gel increased upon increasing the chromium concentration of the original aqueous solution, all the desorbed chromium was successfully reduced to Cr(III). Finally, Cr(VI) removal and recovery as Cr(III) was repeated effectively 8 times using the same persimmon tannin gel sample, thus demonstrating the recyclability of this system.

Several evaluation techniques of tritium in material have been developed so far, such as imaging plate method or electrochemical etching and thermal desorption analysis, as well as conventional β-ray counting. For the latter, its detectable depth is usually limited to a very thin surface region, for example, about 1μm depth for organic and 0.1 μm for metallic materials owing to the shallow escape depth of tritium β-rays.

Germanium (Ge)-carbon (C) core-shell nanowires (NWs), 15 - 80 nm thick and m long, were grown using continuous-wave laser vaporization of Ge-graphite composite targets in high pressure (0.1 - 0.9 mPa) Ar gas. The NW core was crystalline Ge and the shell was amorphous C. The fraction of the NWs in deposits was changed significantly by the Ge content in the targets and had a maximum at the Ge content of 40 atomic %. With increasing Ar pressure, thicker NWs were grown. A strong correlation was evident between the two diameters of the NW and nanoparticle (NP) attached with the tip of the NW. The growth of the NWs can be explained by the formation of Ge-C liquid-like molten NPs having a specific range of size and composition and precipitation of Ge and C followed by phase separation.
