Use of Smartphones for Rapid Location Track.ng in Mega Scale Soil Sampling

Conventional, grid-based sampling location track.ng approach with GPS or topographic maps is time-consuming and inconvenient. Therefore, this study combined the freely available virtual/digital globe with recent advancements of smartphone geo-browsers to develop a new sampling location track.ng approach. The sampling frame was developed with pre-uploaded point map formulated in GIS environment by combining land-use map and one-k.lometer grid with center coordinates. The sampling location grid was uploaded to smartphone and each point was track.d with Google Map path finder using point ID (coded grid coordinate) when searching each sampling location. The suitability of the new approach was tested for soil sample collection from paddy lands distributed in 0.9 million hectares in Sri Lank.. The sampling locations could be reached conveniently with the help of Google path-finder voice direction guide and optional routes. The efficiency of new approach was found to be remark.bly high, i.e., over 99% of the 9000 sampling points, which were spread across Sri Lank. having an area of 65,610 k.2. All sampling points in the country could be covered with twelve member field investigation crew who were guided through smartphones uploaded with sampling point grid on six motorbik.s within 60 days. The new sampling location track.ng approach is effective in terms of cost, time, human resource requirements, thus can be adopted in large-scale soil/plant sampling frames with high accuracy.

Risk.of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation in Elderly Patients with the Overlap Syndrome: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Back.round Co-existence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is referred to as overlap syndrome. Overlap patients have greater degree of hypoxia and pulmonary hypertension than patients with OSA or COPD alone. Studies showed that elderly patients with OSA alone do not have increased risk.of atrial fibrillation (AF) but it is not k.own if overlap patients have higher risk.of AF. Objective To determine whether elderly patients with overlap syndrome have an increased risk.of AF. Methods In this single center, community-based retrospective cohort analysis, data were collected on 2,873 patients > 65 years of age without AF, presenting in the year 2006. Patients were divided into OSA group (n = 60), COPD group (n = 416), overlap syndrome group (n = 28) and group with no OSA or COPD(n = 2369). The primary endpoint was incidence of new-onset AF over the following two years. Logistic regression was performed to adjust for heart failure (HF), coronary artery disease, hypertension (HTN), cerebrovascular disease, cardiac valve disorders, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, chronic k.dney disease (Ck.) and obesity. Results The incidence of AF was 10% in COPD group, 6% in OSA group and 21% in overlap syndrome group (P k., and HTN, patientswith overlap syndrome demonstrated a significant association with new-onset AF (OR = 3.66, P = 0.007). HF, Ck. and HTNwere also significantly associated with new-onset AF (P k.d increase in risk.of new-onset AF as compared to the presence of OSA or COPDalone.

Evaluation and prediction of blast induced ground vibration using support vector machine

We present the application of Support Vector Machine (SVM) for the prediction of blast induced ground vibration by tak.ng into consideration of maximum charge per delay and distance between blast face to monitoring point. To investigate the suitability of this approach, the predictions by SVM have been compared with conventional predictor equations. Blast vibration study was carried out at Magnesite mine of Pithoragarh, India. Total 170 blast vibrations data sets were recorded at different strate-gic and vulnerable locations in and around to mine. Out of 170 data sets, 150 were used for the training of the SVM network.as well as to determine site constants of different conventional predictor equations, whereas, 20 new randomly selected data sets were used to compare the prediction capability of SVM network.with conventional predictor equations. Results were compared based on Co-efficient of Determination (CoD) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) between monitored and predicted values of Peak.Particle Veloc-ity (PPV). It was found that SVM gives closer values of predicted PPV as compared to conventional predictor equations. The coef-ficient of determination between measured and predicted PPV by SVM was 0.955, whereas it was 0.262, 0.163, 0.337 and 0.232 by USBM, Langefors-k.hlstrom, Ambraseys-Hendron and Bureau of Indian Standard equations, respectively. The MAE for PPV was 11.13 by SVM, whereas it was 0.973, 1.088, 0.939 and 1.292 by USBM, Langefors-k.hlstrom, Ambraseys-Hendron and Bureau of Indian Standard equations respectively.

Effect of Center Voltage Vectors(CVVs)of Three-level Space Plane on the Performance of Dual Inverter Fed Open End Winding Induction Motor Drive

Dual inverter fed open end winding induction motor(IM)drive offers many advantages over other multilevel inverter fed IM drives.Pulse width modulation(PWM)techniques are employed for the control of output voltage and frequency.Space vector base PWM techniques are popular among all the PWM techniques.A simplified space vector PWM method with simple and small look.up table approach is presented for dual inverter configuration.Moreover the proposed space vector based PWM technique provides freedom in selecting the center voltage vector(CVV)by which different PWM techniques will be derived.The implementation of all these PWM techniques is generalized by using a constant ao.The derived PWM techniques show superior performance in reducing the zero sequence voltage(ZSV)by maintaining the same quality of output voltage.The performance of all these PWM techniques are evaluated theoretically and verified in real time through dSPACE 1104 control board.

BACk.ROUND Second-look.endoscopy(SLE)to prevent recurrent bleeding in patients with peptic ulcer disease(PUD)and those undergoing endoscopic submucosal dissection(ESD)is routinely being performed.Conflicting evidence exists regarding efficacy,risk.benefit,and cost-effectiveness.AIM To identify the role and effectiveness of SLE in ESD and PUD,associated rebleeding and PUD-related outcomes lik. mortality,hospital length of stay,need for endoscopic or surgical intervention and blood transfusions.METHODS A systematic review of literature databases PubMed,Cochrane,and Embase was conducted from inception to January 5,2023.Randomized controlled trials that compared patients with SLE to those who did not have SLE or evaluated the role of prophylactic hemostasis during SLE compared to other conservative interventions were included.The study was conducted per PRISMA guidelines,and the protocol was registered in PROSPERO(ID CRD42023427555:).RevMan was used to perform meta-analysis,and Mantel-Haenszel Odds ratio(OR)were generated using random effect models.RESULTS A total of twelve studies with 2687 patients were included in our systematic review and meta-analysis,of which 1074 patients underwent SLE after ESD and 1613 patients underwent SLE after PUD-related bleeding.In ESD,the rates of rebleeding were 7%in the SLE group compared to 4.4%in the non-SLE group with OR 1.65,95%confidence intervals(CI)of 0.96 to 2.85;P=0.07,whereas it was 11%in the SLE group compared to 13%in the non-SLE group with OR 0.895%CI:0.50 to 1.29;P=0.36.The mean difference in the blood transfusion rates in the SLE and no SLE group in PUD was OR 0.01,95%CI:-0.22 to 0.25;P=0.91.In SLE vs non-SLE groups with PUD,the OR for Endoscopic intervention was 0.29,95%CI:0.08 to 1.00;P=0.05 while it was OR 2.03,95%CI:0.95 to 4.33;P=0.07,for surgical intervention.The mean difference in the hospital length of stay was-3.57 d between the SLE and no SLE groups in PUD with 95%CI:-7.84 to 0.69;P=0.10,denoting an average of approximately 3 fewer days of hospital stay amon

In vitro antioxidant activity and in vivo hepatoprotective activity of aqueous extract of Allium cepa bulb in ethanol induced liver damage in Wistar rats

The in vitro antioxidant and in vivo hepatoprotective effects of aqueous extract of Allium cepa(A.cepa)bulb were evaluated in male rats against ethanol induced liver damage in preventive and curative models.The antioxidant activity of A.cepa was assayed and activities were compared to standard antioxidant,ascorbic acid.The results revealed that the IC50 values of A.cepa bulb extract for DPPH,hydroxyl,superoxide radical scavenging activities were 195.2±0.2,374.7±0.4 and 182.5±1.7g/mL,respectively.Liver injury was induced by 40%ethanol administration(3.76 g/k. bw,orally)for 25 days.In two different sets of experiments,the A.cepa extracts(100,300 and 600 mg/k. bw)and silymarin(100 mg/k. bw)were administered orally in preventive and curative models.Ethanol administration caused severe hepatic damage in rats as evidenced by elevated serum aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alanine aminotransferase(ALT),alk.line phosphatase(ALP)and total bilirubin levels.The A.cepa and silymarin administration prevented the toxic effect of ethanol on the above serum parameters in both preventive and curative models.The present study concludes that aqueous extract of A.cepa bulb has significant antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity against ethanol induced hepatotoxicity.©2013 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved.

BACk.ROUND Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and metabolic-associated fatty liver disease(MAFLD)are on the rise lik. any other liver disease,and tend to affect 25%of the United States population.The impact of NAFLD and MAFLD on patients with coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)remains unclear.AIM To identify the association of NAFLD and MAFLD with mortality,hospitalization,hospital length of stay,and supplemental oxygen utilization in COVID-19 patients.METHODS A systematic review of literature on Cochrane,Embase,PubMed,ScienceDirect,and Web of Science databases was conducted from January 2019 to July 2022.Studies that evaluated NAFLD/MAFLD using laboratory methods,noninvasive imaging,or liver biopsy were included.The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO(ID CRD42022313259)and PRISMA guidelines were followed.The National Institutes of Health quality assessment tool was used to assess the quality of the studies.Pooled analysis was conducted using software Rev Man version 5.3.The stability of the results was assessed using sensitivity analysis.RESULTS Thirty-two studies with 43388 patients were included in the meta-analysis of whom 8538(20%)patients were observed to have NAFLD.There were 42254 patients from 28 studies included in the mortality analysis.A total of 2008 patients died from COVID-19;837(10.52%)in the NAFLD group and 1171(3.41%)in the non-NAFLD group.The odds ratio(OR)was 1.38 for mortality with a 95%confidence interval(95%CI)=0.97-1.95 and P=0.07.A total of 5043 patients from eight studies were included in the hospital length of stay analysis.There were 1318 patients in the NAFLD group and 3725 patients in the non-NAFLD group.A qualitative synthesis showed that the mean difference in hospital length of stay was about 2 d between the NAFLD and non-NAFLD groups with a 95%CI=0.71-3.27 and P=0.002.For hospitalization rates,the OR was 3.25 with a 95%CI of 1.73-6.10 and P=0.0002.For supplemental oxygen utilization,the OR was 2.04 with a 95%CI of 1.17-3.53 and P=0.01.CONCLUSION Our meta-analysis sugges

This review considers available evidence for mechanisms of conferred adaptive advantages in the face of specific infectious diseases.In short,we explore a number of genetic conditions,which carry some benefits in adverse circumstances including exposure to infectious agents.The examples discussed are conditions k.own to result in resistance to a specific infectious disease,or have been proposed as being associated with resistance to various infectious diseases.These infectious diseasedgenetic disorder pairings include malaria and hemoglobinopathies,cholera and cystic fibrosis,tuberculosis and Tay-Sachs disease,mycotic abortions and phenylk.tonuria,infection by enveloped viruses and disorders of glycosylation,infection by filoviruses and NiemannePick.C1 disease,as well as rabies and myasthenia gravis.We also discuss two genetic conditions that lead to infectious disease hypersusceptibility,although we did not cover the large number of immunologic defects leading to infectious disease hypersusceptibilities.Four of the resistance-associated pairings(malaria/hemogloginopathies,cholera/cystic fibrosis,tuberculosis/Tay-Sachs,and mycotic abortions/phenylk.tonuria)appear to be a result of selection pressures in geographic regions in which the specific infectious agent is endemic.The other pairings do not appear to be based on selection pressure and instead may be serendipitous.Nonetheless,research investigating these relationships may lead to treatment options for the aforementioned diseases by exploiting established mechanisms between genetically affected cells and infectious organisms.This may prove invaluable as a starting point for research in the case of diseases that currently have no reliably curative treatments,e.g.,HIV,rabies,and Ebola.
