Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is one of the major causes of chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer and is therefore, the most common indication for liver transplantation. Conventional antiviral drugs such as pegylated interferon-alpha, taken in combination with ribavirin, represent a milestone in the therapy of this disease. However, due to different viral and host factors, clinical success can be achieved only in approximately half of patients, making urgent the requirement of exploiting alternative approaches for HCV therapy. Fortunately, recent advances in the understanding of HCV viral replication and host cell interactions have opened new possibilities for therapeutic intervention. The most recent technologies, such as small interference RNA mediated gene-silencing, anti-sense oligonucleotides (ASO), or viral vector based gene delivery systems, have paved the way to develop novel therapeutic modalities for HCV. In this review, we outline the application of these technologies in the context of HCV therapy. In particular, we will focus on the newly defined role of cellular microRNA (miR-122) in viral replication and discuss its potential for HCV molecular therapy.

Bean yellow disorder virus （BnYDV） was recently identified as the first crinivirus （family Closteroviridae） that infects members of the family Leguminosae. It was first observed during the autumn of 2003, causing heavy losses in French bean （Phaseolus vulgaris L.） grown commercially in Spain. The virus is transmitted by the sweetpotato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci （Hemiptera： Aleyrodidae） Q-biotype, and disease symptoms resemble nutritional disorders consisting of interveinal mottling and yellowing in leaves, combined with stiffness or brittleness, and are typically produced on the middle to lower parts of the plant. Transmission experiments showed that 50% and 100% of B. tabaci adults acquired the virus after a feeding period of 3 and 7 h, respectively. Viruliferous whiteflies infected 66% and 100% ofP. vulgaris plants after a feeding period of 12 and 24 h, respectively. The transmission efficiency of single whiteflies was 37% and persistence of BnYDV in the vector lasted up to 2 weeks with a half-life of 9 days. BnYDV was transmitted to P. vulgaris, Pisum sativum L., Lens culinaris Medik., and Vicia faba L., but not to Vigna unguiculata L., Glycine max （L.） Merr., Cicer arietum L., and to crop species belonging to families of the Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae. No virus was detected in field samples collected from 30 different species from Boraginaceae, Asteraceae, Geraniaceae, lamiaceae, Leguminosae, Malvaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Thymelaeaceae and Verbenaceae. The restricted host range and efficient management of crops regarding whitefly infestation may be key elements in the control of BnYDV.

Cubitermes spp. are widely distributed soil-feeding termite species in sub- Saharan Africa which play a fundamental role in soil structure and fertility. A complex of at least four cryptic species （i.e., Cubitermes sp. affunis subarquatus complex of species） has been recently described using molecular markers. In order to investigate the breeding system of these species, five microsatellite markers were used to carry out parentage and re- latedness analyses in 15 Gabonese colonies. Monogamy was confirmed as the predominant reproductive organization in Cubitermes spp. （76% of the colonies）. Within 30% of these monogamous colonies, a high relatedness between reproductives was shown, suggesting that mating between related individuals occurs. However, Cubitermes colonies can deviate from monogamy. Indeed, parental contributions by at least two related reproductives of the same sex were revealed in four colonies and polyandry was demonstrated in two of them. Infiltration of reproductives in the colony is the most plausible explanation for such cases of polygamy in Cubitermes spp.

Seep carbonates were collected from the Alaminos Canyon lease area, Gulf of Mexico. The carbonates are present as slabs and blocks. Bivalve shell and foraminifer are the dominant bioclasts in carbonate. Pores are common and usually filled with acicular aragonite crystals. XRD investigation shows that aragonite is the dominate mineral (98%). Peloids, clotted microfabirc and botryoidal aragonite are de-veloped in carbonate and suggest a genesis linked with bacterial degradation of the hydrocarbons. The δ13C value of bioclasts in carbonate is from-4.9‰ to-0.6‰, indicating that the carbon source is mainly from sea water as well as the small portion incorporation of the seep hydrocarbon. The microcrystalline and sparite aragonite shows the δ13C value from-31.3‰ to-23.4‰, suggesting that their carbon is derived mainly from microbial degradation of crude oil. 14C analyses give the radiocarbon age of about 10 ka. Rare earth elements (REE) analyses of the 5% HNO3-treated solution of the carbonates show that the total REE content of the carbonates is low, that is from 0.752 to 12.725 μg·g-1. The shale-normalized REE patterns show significantly negative Ce anomalies. This suggests that cold seep carbonate is most likely formed in a relatively aerobic environment.

China continues to address its internal environmental and poverty reduction problems. In most cases China’s environmental policies eschew use of efficiency-based pricing and instead rely on regulations and direct controls. Moves toward greater use of market-based instruments provide greater efficiency and effectiveness but can worsen the immediate economic situation of China’s poor citizens by increasing their living costs and by delivering outcomes that provide reduced immediate benefits even if do they avoid high future costs. This is not a comprehensive argument for limiting use of economic instruments since these have efficiency benefits and release revenue streams commensurate with the scale of environmental problems. The existence of poverty emphasises the need to tie pricing to compensations. These arguments are illustrated by using various Chinese environmental problems. Aspirations for international carbon mitigation agreements should reflect needs of the poor but, again, this does not imply a case for inaction. Outcomes depend, in part, on the impact of environmental policies on the living standards for those currently living in poverty. They also depend on tax transfer system efficiency. Given China’s environmental problems and its need to eventually grow sustainably while eliminating extreme poverty, the case for switching towards an environmental tax base is strong.

A biomonitoring study was carried out to examine the adverse impacts of total mercury in the blood（HgB）, urine（Hg U） and human scalp hair（HgH） on the residents of a mining district in Colombia. Representative biological samples（scalp hair, urine and blood） were collected from volunteered participants（n = 63） to estimate the exposure levels of THg using a Direct mercury analyzer. The geometric mean of THg concentrations in the hair,urine and blood of males were 15.98 μg/g, 23.89 μg/L and 11.29 μg/L respectively, whereas the females presented values of 8.55 μg/g, 5.37 μg/L and 8.80 μg/L. Chronic urinary Hg（HgU）levels observed in male workers（32.53 μg/L） are attributed to their long termed exposures to inorganic and metallic mercury from gold panning activities. On an average, the levels of THg are increasing from blood（10.05 μg/L） to hair（12.27 μg/g） to urine（14.63 μg/L）.Significant positive correlation was found between hair and blood urinary levels in both male and female individuals. Thus the present biomonitoring investigation to evaluate the Hg levels and associated health issues would positively form a framework for further developmental plans and policies in building an ecofriendly ecosystem.
