Role of seed size, phenology, oogenesis and host distribution in the specificity and genetic structure of seed weevils (Curculio spp.) in mixed forests

Synchrony between seed growth and oogenesis is suggested to largely shape trophic breadth of seed-feeding insects and ultimately to contribute to their co-existence by means of resource partitioning or in the time when infestation occurs.Here we investigated:(i)the role of seed phenology and sexual maturation of females in the host specificity of seed-feeding weevils(Curculio spp.)predating in hazel and oak mixed forests;and(ii)the consequences that trophic breadth and host distribution have in the genetic structure of the weevil populations.DNA analyses were used to establish unequivocally host specificity and to determine the population genetic structure.We identified 4 species with different specificity,namely Curculio nucum females matured earlier and infested a unique host(hazelnuts,Corylus avellana)while 3 species(Curculio venosus,Curculio glandium and Curculio elephas)predated upon the acorns of the 2 oaks(Quercus ilex and Quercus pubescens).The high specificity of C.nucum coupled with a more discontinuous distribution of hazel trees resulted in a significant genetic structure among sites.In addition,the presence of an excess of local rare haplotypes indicated that C.nucum populations went through genetic expansion after recent bottlenecks.Conversely,these effects were not observed in the more generalist Curculio glandium predating upon oaks.Ultimately,co-existence of weevil species in this multi-host-parasite system is influenced by both resource and time partitioning.To what extent the restriction in gene flow among C.nucum populations may have negative consequences for their persistence in a time of increasing disturbances(e.***.drought in Mediterranean areas)deserves further research.

BACKGROUND:Unsustained return of spontaneous circulation(ROSC)is a critical barrier to survival in cardiac arrest patients.This study examined whether end-tidal carbon dioxide(ETCO_(2))and pulse oximetry photoplethysmogram(POP)parameters can be used to identify unsustained ROSC.METHODS:We conducted a multicenter observational prospective cohort study of consecutive patients with cardiac arrest from 2013 to 2014.Patients’general information,ETCO_(2),and POP parameters were collected and statistically analyzed.RESULTS:The included 105 ROSC episodes(from 80 cardiac arrest patients)comprised 51 sustained ROSC episodes and 54 unsustained ROSC episodes.The 24-hour survival rate was significantly higher in the sustained ROSC group than in the unsustained ROSC group(29.2%vs.9.4%,P<0.05).The logistic regression analysis showed that the difference between after and before ROSC in ETCO_(2)(ΔETCO_(2))and the difference between after and before ROCS in area under the curve of POP(ΔAUCp)were independently associated with sustained ROSC(odds ratio[OR]=0.931,95%confi dence interval[95%CI]0.881-0.984,P=0.011 and OR=0.998,95%CI 0.997-0.999,P<0.001).The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve ofΔETCO_(2),ΔAUCp,and the combination of both to predict unsustained ROSC were 0.752(95%CI 0.660-0.844),0.883(95%CI 0.818-0.948),and 0.902(95%CI 0.842-0.962),respectively.CONCLUSION:Patients with unsustained ROSC have a poor prognosis.The combination ofΔETCO_(2) andΔAUCp showed signifi cant predictive value for unsustained ROSC.

Skin cancer is one of themost severe diseases,andmedical imaging is among themain tools for cancer diagnosis.The images provide information on the evolutionary stage,size,and location of tumor lesions.This paper focuses on the classification of skin lesion images considering a framework of four experiments to analyze the classification performance of Convolutional Neural Networks(CNNs)in distinguishing different skin lesions.The CNNs are based on transfer learning,taking advantage of ImageNet weights.Accordingly,in each experiment,different workflow stages are tested,including data augmentation and fine-tuning optimization.Three CNN models based on DenseNet-201,Inception-ResNet-V2,and Inception-V3 are proposed and compared using the HAM10000 dataset.The results obtained by the three models demonstrate accuracies of 98%,97%,and 96%,respectively.Finally,the best model is tested on the ISIC 2019 dataset showing an accuracy of 93%.The proposed methodology using CNN represents a helpful tool to accurately diagnose skin cancer disease.

In a recent study published in Nature,Suryawanshi et al.showed that primary Omicron infection only elicits a mild humoral immune response and limited cross-variant neutralization in non-vaccinated individuals.1On the other hand,vaccinated individuals developed high neutralizing antibody titers against all variants of concern(VOCs)following breakthrough Omicron infections.Hence,Omicron infection can enhance existing immunity induced by vaccination but may not prevent reinfection by other VOCs in non-vaccinated individuals.

Optimization and Deployment of Memory-Intensive Operations in Deep Learning Model on Edge

As a large amount of data is increasingly generated from edge devices,such as smart homes,mobile phones,and wearable devices,it becomes crucial for many applications to deploy machine learning modes across edge devices.The execution speed of the deployed model is a key element to ensure service quality.Considering a highly heterogeneous edge deployment scenario,deep learning compiling is a novel approach that aims to solve this problem.It defines models using certain DSLs and generates efficient code implementations on different hardware devices.However,there are still two aspects that are not yet thoroughly investigated yet.The first is the optimization of memory-intensive operations,and the second problem is the heterogeneity of the deployment target.To that end,in this work,we propose a system solution that optimizes memory-intensive operation,optimizes the subgraph distribution,and enables the compiling and deployment of DNN models on multiple targets.The evaluation results show the performance of our proposed system.

Knee biomechanics of patients with total knee replacement during downhill walking on different slopes

Purpose:The purpose of this study was to compare knee biomechanics of the replaced limb to the non-replaced limb of total knee replacement(TKR)patients and healthy controls during walking on level ground and on decline surfaces of 5°,10°,and 15°.Methods:Twenty-five TKR patients and 10 healthy controls performed 5 walking trials on different decline slopes on a force platform and an instrumented ramp system.Two analyses of variance,2×2(limb×group)and 2×4(limb×decline slope),were used to examine selected biomechanics variables.Results:The replaced limb of TKR patients had lower peak loading-response and push-off knee extension moment than the non-replaced and the matched limb of healthy controls.No differences were found in loading-response and push-off knee internal abduction moments among replaced,non-replaced,and matched limb of healthy controls.The knee flexion range of motion,peak loading-response vertical ground reaction force,and peak knee extension moment increased across all slope comparisons between 0°and 15°in both the replaced and non-replaced limb of TKR patients.Conclusion:Downhill walking may not be appropriate to include in early stage rehabilitation exercise protocols for TKR patients.

Exploring the tectonostratigraphy of the Pakistan Himalaya with new detrital zircon geochronology and neodymium isotope data from the Kaghan Valley

In the central Himalaya,the Greater and Lesser Himalayan tectonostratigraphic zones can be distinguished from each other by combining detrital zircon U-Pb ages and whole-rock Nd isotopic data.In the Hazara-Kashmir syntaxis of northern Pakistan,rock units in the Kaghan valley have been variously assigned to the Tethyan,Greater,and Lesser Himalayan zones.To determine which tectonostratigraphic zones are represented,we sampled across the Batal thrust in the northern Kaghan valley because this structure is identified in some research as the Main Central thrust.Samples from the footwall yield Paleo-to Mesoproterozoic maximum depositional ages(-1.8-1.1 Ga)and an averageεNd(0)value of-14.3.Samples from the hanging wall yield Neoproterozoic maximum depositional ages(~1000-600 Ma)andεNd(0)values of-17.3.The contrasting detrital zircon ages show that the Batal thrust in the Kaghan valley is a major structural division.However,these data lack the characteristic detrital zircon age spectra andεNd(0)values of Greater and Lesser Himalayan rocks north and south of the Main Central thrust in the central Himalaya,respectively.Therefore,either the Batal thrust is not the Main Central thrust,or the Main Central thrust in the Kaghan valley cuts a different structural level and carries rock units not seen outside the Hazara-Kashmir syntaxis.

Human impact on fish sensory systems in the long term: An evolutionary perspective

Humans have severely impacted global ecosystems and this shows few signs of abating.Many aspects of an animal’s biology,including its sensory systems,may be adversely influenced by pollutants and environmental noise.This review focuses on whether and/or how various environmental disturbances disrupt the sensory systems of fishes.As critical as it is to document and understand the current effects of the human footprint,it is also important to consider how organisms might adapt to these impacts over the long term.The present paper outlines the sources of genetic and genomic variation upon which natural selection can act and then reviews examples of known genetic contributions of variation in fish chemosensory,visual and acoustico-lateralis systems.

Global climate change is confounding species conservation strategies

Most organisms face similar problems with respect to their conservation in the face of global climate change.Here,we examine probable effects of climate change on the hyperdiverse plant family Orchidaceae.In the 20th century,the major concerns for orchid conservation revolved around unsustainable harvest for the orchid trade and,more importantly,land conversion from natural ecosystems to those unable to support wild orchid populations.Land conversion included logging,fire regimes and forest conversions to agricultural systems.Although those forms of degradation continue,an additional suite of threats has emerged,fueled by global climate change.Global climate change involves more than responses of orchid populations to increases in ambient temperature.Increasing temperature induces secondary effects that can be more significant than simple changes in temperature.Among these new threats are extended and prolonged fire seasons,rising sea levels,increases in cyclonic storms,seasonal climate shifts,changes in orthographic wind dew point and increased drought.The long-term outlook for orchid biodiversity in the wild is dismal,as it is for many animal groups,and we need to start rethinking strategies for conservation in a rapidly changing world.
