A muon high-resolution pseudorange measurement method: Application to muon navigation in confined spaces

Confined spaces such as polar regions, deep earth and deep ocean are crucial navigation scenarios where traditional navigation techniques have difficulty in obtaining external signals for positioning. The cosmic ray muons, which carry the spatial and energetic information, are easy to penetrate these confined spaces. Therefore, the unique muon characteristic provides a new perspective to estimate detector position, which can be considered using in confined spaces navigation.In this paper, a well-developed theory of muon navigation is established by combining a muon pseudorange measurement method. Moreover, an Equivalent Velocity Calculation Model(EVCM)and a Muon Sequence Matching Technology(MSMT) are proposed. The first model corrects flight pseudorange error caused by the relativistic energy loss and the second technology compensates the random error in pseudorange measurement. Further, a series of simulations are performed to analyze the muon events number which can be received by detector in different scenarios with the variations of zenith angle, detector area, varied detector plates gap, and muon flight distance.Meanwhile, the simulation results demonstrate that the muon navigation update rate every 10 minutes can reach 5.989 in confined spaces at 100 m, and further pseudorange error analysis indicates that the meter-level positioning accuracy can be acquired. Finally, we construct a muon coincidence measurement scheme and verify that the laws of the muon positioning system for high-energy muons are consistent with the simulation results.

pH-sensitive tunable thermochromic hydrogel with carbon quantum dots for smart windows

Thermoresponsive hydrogels have been designed for smart windows to dynamically modulate solar radiation,but their inherent drawbacks of long response time and imperfectly matched phase transition temperature have limited their wide applications.This work reports a novel composite hydrogel consisting of hydroxypropyl cellulose,polyacrylic acid,and carbon quantum dots with intriguing features of tunable transition temperature and enhanced switching speed.The composite hydrogel demonstrated flexible tunability in transition temperature by controlling the hydrogen ion concentration and a fast response speed by dopping with carbon dots for efficient photothermal conversion.The building energy simulation was carried out to investigate the impacts of transition temperature variations and solar regulations on the space cooling/heating loads under different climate conditions,revealing the necessity of tunability of both transition temperature and solar transmittance in thermochromic smart windows.This novel design of thermochromic composite hydrogel provides insight into theoretical and experimental support for future adaptive building envelopes.

A convenient method for measuring gas-liquid volumetric mass transfer coefficient in micro reactors

The research on gas-liquid multiphase reactions using micro reactors is becoming increasingly widespread, given their excellent mass transfer performance. Establishing an accurate and reliable method to measure the gas-liquid mass transfer performance of micro reactors is crucial for evaluating and optimizing the design of micro reactor structure. In this paper, the physical absorption method of aqueous solution-CO_(2) and the chemical absorption method of sodium carbonate solution-CO_(2) were proposed. By analyzing the chemical reaction equilibrium during the absorption process, the relationship between the mass transfer of CO_(2) and the solubility of hydroxide ions in the solution was established, and the total gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient was immediately obtained by measuring the p H value. The corresponding testing platform and process have been established based on the characteristics of the proposed method to ensure fast and accurate measurement. In addition, the chemical absorption method takes into account temperature factors that were not previously considered. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient measured by these two methods is in the same range as those measured by other methods using the same microchannel structure in previous literature. The methods have the advantages of low equipment cost, faster measurement speed, and simpler procedures, which can facilitate its wide application to the evaluation of the mass transfer performance and hence can guide the structure optimization of microchannel reactors.

A Novel Approach of Electromagnetic Compatibility Conducted Susceptibility Analysis Based on Gaussian Even Pulse Signal

The purpose of the electromagnetic compatibility conducted susceptibility test for interconnected cables in the system is to evaluate its ability to operate acceptably when subjected to interference. We propose a novel conducted susceptibility analysis approach: by injecting the Gaussian even pulse signal, we find that the susceptibility threshold of the system shows two different patterns with the change of signal parameters; then we locate the cause of the susceptibility of the device by analyzing the threshold level curves. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is verified by testing with devices containing digital modules such as navigation receivers. The proposed approach facilitates a deeper understanding of the susceptibility mechanism of systems and their appropriate electromagnetic compatibility design.

Epimedin B exhibits pigmentation by increasing tyrosinase family proteins expression,activity,and stability

Epimedin B(EB)is one of the main flavonoid ingredients present in Epimedium brevicornum Maxim.,a traditional herb widely used in China.Our previous study showed that EB was a stronger inducer of melanogenesis and an activator of tyrosinase(TYR).However,the role of EB in melanogenesis and the mechanism underlying the regulation remain unclear.Herein,as an extension to our previous investigation,we provide comprehensive evidence of EB-induced pigmentation in vivo and in vitro and elucidate the melanogenesis mechanism by assessing its effects on the TYR family of proteins(TYRs)in terms of expression,activity,and stability.The results showed that EB increased TYRs expression through microphthalmia-associated transcription factor-mediated p-Akt(referred to as protein kinase B(PKB))/glycogen synthase kinase 3β(GSK3β)/β-catenin,p-p70 S6 kinase cascades,and protein 38(p38)/mitogen-activated protein(MAP)kinase(MAPK)and extracellular regulated protein kinases(ERK)/MAPK pathways,after which EB increased the number of melanosomes and promoted their maturation for melanogenesis in melanoma cells and human primary melanocytes/skin tissues.Furthermore,EB exerted repigmentation by stimulating TYR activity in hydroquinone-and N-phenylthiourea-induced TYR inhibitive models,including melanoma cells,zebrafish,and mice.Finally,EB ameliorated monobenzone-induced depigmentation in vitro and in vivo through the enhancement of TYRs stability by inhibiting TYR misfolding,TYR-related protein 1 formation,and retention in the endoplasmic reticulum and then by downregulating the ubiquitination and proteolysis processes.These data conclude that EB can target TYRs and alter their expression,activity,and stability,thus stimulating their pigmentation function,which might provide a novel rational strategy for hypopigmentation treatment in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.

Edaravone-loaded poly(amino acid) nanogel inhibits ferroptosis for neuroprotection in cerebral ischemia injury

Neurological injury caused by ischemic stroke is a major cause of permanent disability and death. The currently available neuroprotective drugs fail to achieve desired therapeutic efficacy mainly due to short circulation half-life and poor blood−brain barrier (BBB) permeability. For that, an edaravone-loaded pH/glutathione (pH/GSH) dual-responsive poly(amino acid) nanogel (NG/EDA) was developed to improve the neuroprotection of EDA. The nanogel was triggered by acidic and EDA-induced high-level GSH microenvironments, which enabled the selective and sustained release of EDA at the site of ischemic injury. NG/EDA exhibited a uniform sub-spherical morphology with a mean hydrodynamic diameter of 112.3 ± 8.2 nm. NG/EDA efficiently accumulated at the cerebral ischemic injury site of permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) mice, showing an efficient BBB crossing feature. Notably, NG/EDA with 50 µM EDA significantly increased neuron survival (29.3%) following oxygen and glucose deprivation by inhibiting ferroptosis. In addition, administering NG/EDA for 7 d significantly reduced infarct volume to 22.2% ± 7.2% and decreased neurobehavioral scores from 9.0 ± 0.6 to 2.0 ± 0.8. Such a pH/GSH dual-responsive nanoplatform might provide a unique and promising modality for neuroprotection in ischemic stroke and other central nervous system diseases.

Stability Mechanism of Laser-induced Fluorinated Super-hydrophobic Coating in Alkaline Solution

Great attention has been focused on super-hydrophobic surfaces due to their fantastic applications.Fluoride chemicals are widely used to fabricate super-hydrophobic surfaces due to their convenience,simplicity,and high efficiency.Previous research has made extensively efforts on corrosion resistance of fluorinated super-hydrophobic surfaces in corrosive media.Nevertheless,rare papers focused on the underlying reasons of anticorrosion property and stability mechanism on the fluorinated super-hydrophobic coatings in alkaline solution.Therefore,this work aims to reveal these mechanisms of fluorinated super-hydrophobic copper samples in strong alkaline solution(pH 13).Through the characterization of surface wettability and surface morphology,the laser-induced super-hydrophobic surface retained excellent stability after soaking in alkaline solution for 4 h.Through measurement of chemical compositions,the anticorrosion mechanism and stability mechanism of the fluorinated super-hydrophobic surface were proposed.Importantly,the hydroxyl ion(OH−)can further promote the hydrolysis reaction to improve the density and bonding strength of the fluoride molecules.Finally,the electrochemical experiments(PDP and EIS tests)were conducted to validate the rationality of our proposed conclusions.

A rescaling algorithm for multi-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method towards turbulent flows with complex configurations

Understanding and modeling flows over porous layers are of great industrial significance.To accurately solve the turbulent multi-scale flows on complex configurations,a rescaling algorithm designed for turbulent flows with the Chapman-Enskog analysis is proposed.The mesh layout and the detailed rescaling procedure are also introduced.Direct numerical simulations(DNSs)for a turbulent channel flow and a porous walled turbulent channel flow are performed with the three-dimensional nineteen-velocity(D3Q19)multiple-relaxation-time(MRT)lattice Boltzmann method(LBM)to validate the accuracy,adaptability,and computational performance of the present rescaling algorithm.The results,which are consistent with the previous DNS studies based on the finite difference method and the LBM,demonstrate that the present method can maintain the continuity of the macro values across the grid interface and is able to adapt to complex geometries.The reasonable time consumption of the rescaling procedure shows that the present method can accurately calculate various turbulent flows with multi-scale and complex configurations while maintaining high computational efficiency.

Thromboangiitis obliterans(TAO)is a rare,chronic,progressive,and segmental inflammatory disease characterized by a high rate of amputation,significantly compromising the quality of life of patients.Si-Miao-Yong-An decoction(SMYA),a tradition-al prescription,exhibits anti-inflammatory,anti-thrombotic,and various other pharmacological properties.Clinically,it was fully proved to be effective for TAO therapy,but the specific therapeutic effect of SMYA on TAO has been unknown.Thus,deep unveiling the mechanism of SMYA in TAO for identifying clinical therapeutic targets is extremely important.In this study,we observed elev-ated levels of IL-17A in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs)of TAO patients,whereas the expression of miR-548j-5p was significantly decreased.A negative correlation between the levels of miR-548j-5p and IL-17A was also demonstrated.In vitro ex-periments showed that overexpression of miR-548j-5p led to a decrease in IL-17A levels,whereas downregulation of miR-548j-5p showed the opposite effect.Using a dual luciferase assay,we confirmed that miR-548j-5p directly targets IL-17A.Furthermore,serum containing SMYA effectively decreased IL-17A levels by increasing the expression of miR-548j-5p.More importantly,the results of in vivo tests indicated that SMYA mitigated the development of TAO by inhibiting IL-17A through the upregulation of miR-548j-5p in vascular tissues.In conclusion,SMYA significantly enhances the expression of miR-548j-5p,thereby reducing the levels of the target gene IL-17A and alleviating TAO.Our research not only identifies novel targets and pathways for the clinical diagnosis and treatment of TAO but also advances the innovation in traditional Chinese medicine through the elucidation of the SMYA/miR-548j-5p/IL-17A regulatory axis in the pathogenesis of TAO.

In implantable electrophysiological recording systems,the headstage typically comprises neural probes that interface with brain tissue and integrated circuit chips for signal processing.While advancements in MEMS and CMOS technology have significantly improved these components,their interconnection still relies on conventional printed circuit boards and sophisticated adapters.This conventional approach adds considerable weight and volume to the package,especially for high channel count systems.To address this issue,we developed a through-polymer via(TPV)method inspired by the through-silicon via(TSV)technique in advanced three-dimensional packaging.This innovation enables the vertical integration of flexible probes,amplifier chips,and PCBs,realizing a flexible,lightweight,and integrated device(FliD).The total weight of the FliDis only 25%that of its conventional counterparts relying on adapters,which significantly increased the activity levels of animals wearing the FliDs to nearly match the levels of control animals without implants.Furthermore,by incorporating a platinum-iridium alloy as the top layer material for electrical contact,the FliD realizes exceptional electrical performance,enabling in vivo measurements of both local field potentials and individual neuron action potentials.These findings showcase the potential of FliDs in scaling up implantable neural recording systems and mark a significant advancement in the field of neurotechnology.
