Bone diseases such as osteoporosis and periodontitis are induced by excessive osteoclastic activity,which is closely associated with ***(BA)has been used as a cytokine-suppressive or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the production of proinflammatory cytokines or ***,its role in osteoclast differentiation and function remains ***,we explored the role of BA in regulating osteoclast differentiation and elucidated the underlying *** inhibited osteoclast differentiation and strongly suppressed interleukin-1β(IL-1β)*** inhibited osteoclast formation and bone resorption when added to bone marrowderived macrophages and differentiated osteoclasts,and the inhibitory effect was reversed by IL-1β*** reporter assay and the inhibitor study of IL-1βtranscription suggested that BA inhibited nuclear factor-κB and activator protein-1 by regulating IκB kinase,extracellular signal regulated kinase and P38,resulting in the down-regulation of IL-1β*** also promoted osteoblast ***,BA protected lipopolysaccharide-and ovariectomy-induced bone loss in mice,suggesting therapeutic potential against inflammation-induced bone diseases and postmenopausal osteoporosis.

In this study,we investigated the effect of sample pretreatments(ultrasonication and alkaline extraction)on total organic carbon(TOC)measurements for water samples containing suspended solids(SS)of four different origins(algae,soil,sewage sludge,and leaf litter)to more clearly assess the impact of particulate organic carbon(POC)in *** effects each of ultrasonication(power,pulse,etc.)and alkaline extraction condition(concentration,time,etc.)on the TOC recovery and precision were investigated,and the results were compared with those of a new sample pre treatment method combining both *** treatment(0.01 mol/L NaOH)showed higher precision than ultrasonication(100/5 on/off pulse),and notably,the differences among the measured TOC values in samples of different origins were also further reduced in the alkaline *** suggests that the ultrasonic pretreatment results can be mainly attributed to the increase in POC recovery through particle size reduction,whereas the alkaline treatment results are achieved through the enhancement of POC *** is also particularly noteworthy that a higher TOC recovery of 87.6%±7.4%with a higher precision of 8.4%could be obtained using the combined method,compared to each treatment(ultrasonic:TOC recovery 34.7%,relative standard deviation 63.1%;alkaline:49.6%and 23.0%,respectively).Thus,simultaneous pretreatment with ultrasonication and alkaline extraction is expected to increase the oxidation rate of organic matter and the homogeneity of the samples,minimizing the loss of POC measurement values,and thereby improving the reliability of the TOC measurements of water samples containing SS.

Earthquake-induced disasters are often more severe over soft soils than over firm soils or rocks owing to the seismic site effects related to the amplification of ground motion. On a regional scale, such differences can be estimated by spatially predicting the subsurface soil thickness over the entire target area. Generally, soil deposits are deeper in coastal or riverside areas than in inland regions. In this study, the seismic site effects in the coastal metropolitan areas of Incheon and Bucheon, South Korea, were assessed to provide information on seismic hazards. Spatial prediction of geotechnical layers was performed for the entire study area within an advanced GIS framework. Approximately 7500 existing borehole records in the Incheon and Bucheon areas were gathered and archived into a GIS database. Surface geotechnical data were acquired from a walk-over survey. Based on the optimized geo-data, spatial zoning maps of site-specific seismic response parameters, based on multiscale geospatial modeling, were created and presented for use in a regional seismic mitigation strategy. Seismic zonation was also performed to determine site coefficients for seismic design over the entire target area and to compare them with each other. We verified that the geotechnical data based spatial zonation would be useful for seismic hazard mitigation.

Debris flows caused by heavy rainfall in mountain areas near expressways lead to severe social and economic losses and sometimes result in ***, the development of a real-time system for debris-flow hazard assessment is necessary to provide preliminary information for rapid decision making about evacuations or restoration measures, as well as to prevent secondary disasters caused by debris flows. Recently,various map-based approaches have been proposed using multi-attribute criteria and assessment methods for debrisflow susceptibilities. For the macrozonation of debris-flow hazard at a national scale, a simplified method such as the Korea Expressway Corporation(KEC) debris-flow hazard assessment method can be applied for systematic analysis based on geographic information systems(GIS) and monitoring networks. In this study, a GIS-based framework of real-time debris-flow hazard assessment for expressway sections is proposed based on the KEC debris-flow hazard assessment method. First, the KEC-based method was standardized in a systematic fashion using Arc GIS,enabling the objective and quantitative acquisition of various attribute datasets. The quantification of rainfall criteria also was considered. A safety management system for debris-flow hazard was developed based on the GIS platform. Finally, the method was applied and verified on three expressway sections in Korea. The grading standard for each individual influencing attribute was subsequently modified to more accurately assess the debris-flow hazards.

We evaluate the influence of temperature on the behavior of a three-phase clock-driven metal–oxide–semiconductor （MOS） chaotic circuit. The chaotic circuit consists of two nonlinear functions, a level shifter, and three sample and hold blocks. It is necessary to analyze a CMOS-based chaotic circuit with respect to variation in temperature for stability because the circuit is sensitive to the behavior of the circuit design parameters. The temperature dependence of the proposed chaotic circuit is investigated via the simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis （SPICE） using 0.6-μm CMOS process technology with a 5-V power supply and a 20-kHz clock frequency. The simulation results demonstrate the effects of temperature on the chaotic dynamics of the proposed chaotic circuit. The time series, frequency spectra, bifurcation phenomena, and Lyapunov exponent results are provided.

Whirling is a cutting process in which a series of cutting edges on whirling ring remove material by turning over a rotating workpiece. In this study static and dynamic stability of whirling unit was estimated by using ADAMS and NASTRAN softwares. Each maximum force acting on the bearing attached to the spindle assembly and the cutting tool attached to the whirling ring with the rotating speed of 6 000 r/min was 235 N and 902 N respectively. The maximum stress of 0.74 MPa on the base frame is far smaller than the yield strength of 282 MPa. The calculated natural frequency of 148 Hz of the system is far from the frequency of the driving speed of 6 000 r/min. The experimentally obtained maximum cutting force of 792 N is smaller than that of calculated value. And the experimentally obtained natural frequency of 118 Hz is beyond the driving speed of 6000 r/min. From above results it can be judged that the whirling system is statically and dynamically stable.

The potent anti-cancer metastatic effects induced by the immunostimulatory activities of intravenously administered BF–I,an active polysaccharide purified from fermented barley,were previously *** study aimed to evaluate the anti-cancer metastatic effect of orally administered BF–I and elucidated the microstructure and active moiety of BF–I using sequential enzymatic *** experiments using Colon26-M3.1 carcinoma,prophylactic oral administration of BF–I potently suppressed lung cancer ***,gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis of partially methylated alditol acetate showed that BF–I comprised 15 different glycosyl linkages,including 4-linked Xylp(16.1%),terminal Araf(12.4%),4-linked Glcp(32.8%),3-linked Glcp(13.5%),3,6-linked Glcp(1.5%),and 3,6-linked Galp(5.3%).These glycosyl linkage combinations are typical for arabinoxylan,yeast-derivedβ-glucan,barley-derivedβ-glucan,and type II *** clarify the microstructure,BF–I was sequentially degraded via linkage-specific enzymatic hydrolysis using five ***,the sugar composition,glycosyl linkage,and reactivity with theβ-glucosyl Yariv reagent were analyzed,along with sequencing based on tandem mass spectra of partially degraded fragment *** results confirmed that BF–I comprises a mixture of four different types of polysaccharides(arabinoxylan,yeast-derivedβ-glucan,barley-derivedβ-glucan,and type II arabinogalactan)with similar molecular ***,different polysaccharides contribute significantly to cytokine(interleukin-6,-12,and tumor necrosis factor-α)secretion by peritoneal ***,the potent anti-cancer metastatic activity of BF–I is proposed to be related to the immunostimulatory activities of the four different types of polysaccharides.

Dementia prevalence has soared due to population aging. In Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) as a pre-dementia stage, sleepdisturbances have raised much interest as a factor in a bidirectional relationship with cognitive decline. Thus, this studydeveloped the Sleep and Cognition Enhancement Multimodal Intervention (SCEMI) based on Lazarus’ multimodal approachand conducted a randomized controlled experiment to investigate the effects of the novel program on sleep and cognition inMCI elderly. The participants were 55 MCI elderly with sleep disturbances at two dementia care centers located in S-city,Gyeonggi-do, South Korea (n = 25 in the experimental group and n = 30 in the control group). The study period was fromNovember 01 to December 27, 2022. The experimental group received 8 sessions of SCEMI, 60 min per session once a *** control group received general education and guidance using a simplified booklet on the sleep and cognitive *** data collection, a self-reported questionnaire was used to investigate sleep quality, presleep arousal, cognitive function,stress, and depression. The results showed that, compared to the control group, the experimental group had significantlyimproved across all variables: sleep quality (U = 109.50, p hancesleep and cognition in community-dwelling MCI elderly with sleep disturbances.

Interaction between tumour cells and macrophages enables cancer cells to evade immune detection and clearance by interfering with macrophage *** anti-phagocytic signals regulated by anti-phagocytic proteins are termed"don't eat me"signals;these signals include sialic acidbinding immunoglobulin-type lectin-10(Siglec-10)and the recently revealed CD24 immune checkpoint(ICP).In this study,we demonstrate that targeting a specific glycan on CD24 exhibits the potential to inhibit *** nigra agglutinin(SNA),a sialic acid-binding lectin,was employed to block CD24 and to enhance phagocytosis in melanoma *** addition,we prepared SNA-conjugated hollow gold-iron oxide nanoparticles for photothermal therapy of *** findings show that the combination treatment of SNA-conjugated photothermal nanoparticles and near-infrared exposure successfully augments tumour cell phagocytosis both in vitro and in vivo models.

Estimating the production and mortality of fine roots using minirhizotrons in a Pinus densiflora forest in Gwangneung,Korea

The aim of this study was to estimate fine root production （FP） and fine root mortality （FM） at 0-10, 10-20, and 20-30 cm soil depths using minirhizotrons in a 75-year-old Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. forest located in Gwangneung, Korea. We developed the conversion factors （frame cm-2） of three soil depths （0.158 for 0-10 cm, 0.120 for 10-20 cm, and 0.131 for 20-30 cm） based on soil coring and minirhizotron data. FP and FM were estimated using conversion factors from March 26, 2013 to March 2, 2014. The annual FP and FM values at the 0-30 cm soil depth were 3200.2 and 2271.5 kg ha-1 yr -1, respectively. The FP estimate accounted for approximately 17 % of the total net primary production at the study site. FP was highest in summer （July 31-September 26）, and FM was highest in autumn （September 27-November 29）. FP was positively correlated with seasonal change in soil temperature, while FM was not related to that change. The sea- sonality of FP and FM might be linked to above-ground photosynthetic activity. Both FP and FM at the 0-10 cm depth were significantly higher than at 10-20 and 20-30 cm depths, and this resulted from the decrease in nutrient availability with increasing soil depth. The minirhizotron approach and conversion factors developed in this study will enable fast and accurate estimation of the fine root dynamics in P. densiflora forest ecosystems.
