AIM:To understand the complex reaction of gastric inflammation induced by Helicobacter pylori(H pylori) in a systematic manner using a protein interaction network. METHODS:The expression of genes significantly changed on microarray during H pylori infection was scanned from the web literary database and translated into proteins.A network of protein interactions was constructed by searching the primary interactions of selected *** constructed network was mathematically analyzed and its biological function was *** addition,the nodes on the network were checked to determine if they had any further functional importance or relation to other proteins by extending them. RESULTS:The scale-free network showing the relationship between inflammation and carcinogenesis was *** analysis showed hub and bottleneck proteins,and these proteins were mostly related to immune *** network contained pathways and proteins related to H pylori infection,such as the JAK-STAT pathway triggered by *** of nuclear factor (NF)-κB,TLR4,and other proteins known to function as core proteins of immune response were also found. These immune-related proteins interacted on the network with pathways and proteins related to the cell cycle,cell maintenance and proliferation,andtranscription regulators such as BRCA1,FOS,REL,and zinc finger *** extension of nodes showed interactions of the immune proteins with cancer- related *** extended network,the core network,a summarized form of the extended network, and cell pathway model were constructed. CONCLUSION:Immune-related proteins activated by H pylori infection interact with proto-oncogene *** hub and bottleneck proteins are potential drug targets for gastric inflammation and cancer.

We study the minimizers of the Ginzburg-Landau model for variable thickness, superconducting, thin films with high k, placed in an applied magnetic field hex, when hex is of the order of the ＂first critical field＂, i.e. of the order of ｜lnε｜. We obtain the asymptotic estimates of minimal energy and describe the possible locations of the vortices.

With the well-being trends to pursue a healthy life, mountain ginseng(Panax ginseng) is rising as one of the most profitable forest products in South Korea. This study was aimed at evaluating a new methodology for identifying suitable sites for mountain ginseng cultivation in the country. Forest vegetation data were collected from 46 sites and the spatial distribution of all sites was analyzed using GIS data for topographic position, landform, solar radiation, and topographic wetness. The physical and chemical properties of the soil samples, including moisture content, p H, organic matter, total nitrogen, exchangeable cations, available phosphorous, and soil texture, were analyzed. The cultivation suitability at each site was assessed based on the environmental conditions using logistic regression(LR) and geographically weighted logistic regression(GWLR) and the results of both methods were compared. The results show that the areas with northern aspect and higher levels of solar radiation, moisture content, total nitrogen, and sand ratio are more likely to be identified as suitable sites for ginseng cultivation. In contrast to the LR, the spatial modeling with the GWLR results in an increase in the model fitness and indicates that a significant portion of spatialautocorrelation in the data decreases. A higher value of the area under the receiver operating characteristic(ROC) curve presents a better prediction accuracy of site suitability by the GWLR. The geographically weighted coefficient estimates of the model are nonstationary, and reveal that different site suitability is associated with the geographical location of the forest stands. The GWLR increases the accuracy of selecting suitable sites by considering the geographical variations in the characteristics of the cultivation sites.

Transient elastography (TE) is a new non-invasive tool for assessing liver stiffness, which is correlated with the histologic stage of liver fibrosis. Many studies have reported a good accuracy of TE in predicting signif icant fibrosis and an optimal accuracy in predicting cirrhosis. Furthermore, the potential role of TE in screening the general population has also been proven. TE thus helps physicians to decide treatment strategies, predict prog-nosis, and monitor disease progression in patients with chronic liver disease and to screen the general popula-tion to identify high risk patients with potential liver disease. However, most data on the clinical roles of TE have been gathered in European patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC), because TE was first developed in France. Accordingly, much data on the usefulness of TE in patients with CHC has accumulated. Recently, however, vigorous efforts have been made to apply TEto patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), and TE has also proved to have acceptable accuracy in diagnosing liver fibrosis and cirrhosis in these patients. Thus, we focused on TE in the Asian population with CHB in comparison with the European population with CHC and found that the diagnostic performance and cutoff values were different between the 2 populations possibly as a result of several different confounders between Asian and European populations (the etiology of chronic liver disease, histologic features, major fluctuation in alanine aminotransferase levels, and the prevalence of high body mass index and metabolic syndrome). Therefore, further studies tailored to the Asian population with CHB should be performed before the widespread application of TE in Asian populations with CHB.

What factors fundamentally determine the value of superconducting transition temperature Tc in high temperature superconductors has been the subject of intense *** the establishment of an empirical law known as Homes'law,there is a growing consensus in the community that the Tc value of the cuprate superconductors is closely linked to the superfluid density(ρ_(s))of its ground state and the conductivity(σ)of its normal ***,all the data supporting this empirical law(ρ_(s)=AσT_(c))have been obtained from the ambientpressure *** this study,we present the first high-pressure results about the connection of the quantities of ρ_(s) and σ with T_(c),through the studies on the Bi_(1.74)Pb_(0.38)Sr_(1.88)CuO_(6+δ)and Bi_(2)Sr_(2)CaCu_(2)O_(8+δ),in which the value of their high-pressure resistivity(ρ=1/σ)is achieved by adopting our newly established method,while the quantity ofρs is extracted using Homes'*** highlight that the Tc values are strongly linked to the joint response factors of magnetic field and electric field,i.e.,ρ_(s) and σ,respectively,implying that the physics determining T_(c) is governed by the intrinsic electromagnetic fields of the system.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between cytokines and responses to peginterferon α-2a treatment in chronic hepatitis B patients has not yet been fully elucidated. We analyzed the serum levels of interleukin (IL)-1α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, vascular endothelial growth factor, interferon-γ, tumor necrosis factor-α, monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP1) and epidermal growth factor during the treatment with peginterferon α-2a. METHODS: Ninety-three serum samples from 20 chronic hepatitis B patients were collected before, during and after 48 weeks of peginterferon therapy and were assayed for 12 cytokines. The patients were categorized as either virologic responders (VRs) or non-responders (NRs) according to their HBV DNA levels taken at 6th month during treatment. The Evidence Investigator (Randox, Antrim, UK), a protein chip analyzer, was used to quantify cytokines. RESULTS: Among the 12 cytokines, the levels of MCP1 were increased and the levels of IL-4 were decreased during the treatment in VRs. However these cytokines were not significantly changed in NRs in the treatment phases. Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) value of HBV DNA measured before the treatment was 0.81 in predicting VRs, and that of the baseline MCP1 was 0.76. IL-6 levels at 3rd and 6th months during the treatment also showed AUROC values 0.85 and 0.78 respectively in predicting sustained VRs. CONCLUSION: Serum cytokine levels reflect the pathological differences of individual treatment phases and could also be useful in monitoring responses to peginterferon treatment in chronic hepatitis B patients.

Prognostic implication of isolated tumor cells and micrometastases in regional lymph nodes of gastric cancer

AIM： To determine the prognostic significance of isolated tumor cells （ITCs） and lymph node micrometastases in gastric cancer. METHODS： Hematoxylin and eosin-stained slides of lymph node dissections of 632 consecutive gastric cancers were reviewed. Cytokeratin immunostaining was performed in 280 node-negative cases and 5 cases indefinite for lymph node metastases. Lymph node metastases were divided into ITCs, micrometastases, or macrometastases, according to the sizes of tumor deposits in largest dimension. ITCs were further classified into four groups according to metastasis pattern. RESULTS： Lymph node metastases were identified by immunostaining in 58 of 280 node-negative cases （20.7%） and were not significantly associated with patient survival （P = 0.3460）. After cytokeratin immunostaining, 196 cases were classified as pN1, which consisted of 20 cases with micrometastases detected by immunostaining （pNlmi（i＋））, 34 cases with only micrometastases （pNlmi）, and 142 cases with pN1 with one or more macrometastases （pN1）. Cases with pNlmi and pNlmi（i＋） had a significantly better prognosis than the cases with pN1 （P = 0.0037）. ITCs were found in 38 of these 58 cases, and could be divided into four groups： 12 cases with only a single cell pattern, 7 cases with multiple individual cells, 5 cases with single small cluster, and 14 cases with multiple small clusters. Among these four groups, cases with ITCs of multiple individual cell pattern showed the worst survival （median survival： 28 mo, P〈0.0001）.CONCLUSION： Both size and pattern of lymph node metastases can give prognostic information on the survival of gastric cancer patients.

Oral antiviral agents have been developed in the last two decades for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B(CHB).However,antiviral resistance remains an important challenge for long-term CHB *** of the clinically available oral antiviral agents are nucleoside or nucleotide analogues that target the activity of viral reverse transcriptase(RT),and all are reported to have resistant *** the hepatitis B virus(HBV)RT,like other viral polymerases,lacks proofreading activity,the emergence of drug-resistance occurs readily under selective pressure from the administration of antiviral *** molecular diagnosis of drug-resistant HBV is based on sequence variations,and current diagnostic methods include sequencing,restriction fragment polymorphism analysis,and ***,we will discuss the currently available molecular diagnosis tools,in vitro phenotypic assays for validation of drug-resistant HBV,and treatment options for drug-resistant HBV.
