Comparison between Quanti-FERON-TB Gold In-Tube test and tuberculin skin test for diagnosis of latent tuberculosis in children: A cross-section study

Objective: To compare Quanti-FERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) test and tuberculin skin test (TST) for the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection in children. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 64 participants who were between 3 months and 14 years old and had close contact with smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis were included. Both QFT-GIT test and TST were done and the results were analyzed by SPSS software and Kappa test. Results: The distribution of gender and age according to QFT-GIT and TST results were matched (P>0.05). Overall agreement between QFT-GIT and TST for diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection in children was 75%. In addition, the contingency coefficient was 0.257, and the Kappa measure of agreement was 0.246 (P=0.034). Conclusions: Compared to TST, QFT-GIT shows no apparent advantage for diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection in children.

The prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) is increasing in Iran. Patients with depression who have a myocardial infarction are more likely to die and patients who have depressive symptoms during hospitalization may have increased cardiovascular events. This study aimed to determine the relationship between anxiety, depression and coronary artery disease among patients undergoing angiography in Ghaem Hospital, Mashhad. This was a case-control study conducted between September 2011 and August 2012 among patients undergoing coronary angiography in Ghaem Hospital, Mashhad, Iran. There were 486 cases that were found to have one or more coronary stenoses, with a stenosis of equal or more than 50% of the diameter of at least one major coronary artery. The other patient group consisted of the patients in whom the coronary artery stenosis was less than 50% in diameter which was classified as angiography negative, and a control group that consisted of 440 healthy adults aged 18 years old and above who were selected among people who attended for routine medical checkup and medical examination of employment. The dependent variables were Beck Anxiety and Depression Inventory scores and the independent factors were coronary artery disease, and socioeconomic profiles. Validated and reliability-tested questionnaires were used for data collection. The mean age of patients was 55.75 ± 10.64 years and in the healthy group was 55.83 ± 8.55 years;there was no significant difference in age between subject groups (p = 0.897) nor a significant difference in the gender frequency distribution of subjects (p = 0.610). The Effects of Fetal Movement Counting on Mental Health of Mother in Third Trimester A Randomized Controlled Trial

Anxiety is one of the psychological problems in pregnant women that sometimes takes the form of pathological and affects the mental health of mother. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of fetal movement counting on mental health of mother. In a randomized-controlled trial, 208 nulliparous women were randomly divided into two groups. At 28th weeks, both groups completed the GHQ-28. Then the intervention group started to count fetal movements from 28th to 37th weeks of gestation and the control group received routine prenatal care. Again, both groups completed the questionnaire at 37 weeks" gestation and the results were compared. Analysis was performed by SPSS and a P value < 0.05 was considered significant. The mean scores of mental health of mothers in 28th and 37th of pregnancy was respectively 23.52 ± 10.23 and 21.09 ± 10.12 in the intervention group and the difference was significant (P = 0.025). The mean in the control group was 23.69 ± 9.43 and 23.88 ± 8.60 respectively, and the difference was not significant (P = 0.52). In comparing the mean scores between the two groups, it was found that the difference was not significant at 28th weeks of gestation (P = 0.37), but it was significant in 37th week (P = 0.002) and the counting of fetal movements could improve the mental health of mothers compared to control group. The women who had fetal movements counting at weeks 28 to 37 of gestation reported better mental health than the control group. The mother reported concerns about decreased fetal movement was similar in the two groups.

目的:研究不同丁香提取物对戊四唑引发小鼠癫癎的作用。方法:实验小鼠被随机分为生理盐水对照组、不同剂量(50、100、250及500mg/kg)丁香水提取物组、不同剂量(50、100、250及500mg/kg)丁香乙醇提取物组、不同剂量(50、100、250及500mg/kg)丁香三氯甲烷提取物组。给予戊四唑前60min为各组小鼠注射药物。记录并比较各组小鼠阵发性强直性抽搐潜伏期(generalized tonic-clonic seizure,GTCS)、最小阵发性痉挛潜伏期(minimal clonic seizure,MCS)及死亡率。结果:低、中、高三种剂量的丁香水提取物能有效延长MSC和GTCS的潜伏期(P<0.05)。50、100和250mg/kg的丁香乙醇提取物显著增加了小鼠MCS潜伏时间(P<0.05)。与盐水治疗组相比,惊厥小鼠模型经50、100、250和500mg/kg丁香的乙醇提取物治疗后,其GTCS的潜伏期显著高于盐水治疗组,但丁香的三氯甲烷提取物对惊厥小鼠的GTCS和MCS潜伏期没有显著的影响。结论:丁香乙醇和水提取物能抑制由戊四唑诱发的小鼠惊厥,但其确切的作用机制和有效的抗惊厥活性物质还有待进一步的研究。

The Survey of Microbiological Contamination of Pitcher Cheese in West Azarbayjan Province, Iran

Milk acts as a suitable peripheral culture for growth and propagation of different kinds of micro organisms. During the process of producing cheese, some micro organisms such as Escherichia coli, Coliform, Staphylococcus, Mold and Yeast may cause its contamination. In respect to the fact that pitcher cheese is produced in traditional way in different regions in West Azarbayjan, the aim of this research is examining the rate of contamination of pitcher cheese in West Azarbayjan. About 42 samples of pitcher cheese were gathered under strill condition from different parts of West Azarbayjan. In order to study microbes contamination, the samples were examined by standard microbiologic ways in laboratory from the 42 samples of pitcher cheese, four samples were contaminated by Staphylococcus aureus coagulase positive, 16 samples were contaminated by E. Coli, 21 samples by Coliform, 17 samples by mold and yeast. The producing and delivering should be controlled because of the rate of contamination in pitcher cheese and this kind of cheese should be produced in half industrial way by controlling and making special facilities for pitcher cheese producers.

Role of platelet parameters as a biomarker in diagnosis of acute appendicitis: A retrospective case-controlled study

Objective: To investigate the diagnostic value of platelet parameters in acute appendicitis. Methods: This retrospective case-controlled study was performed among 200 healthy people and 200 patients with a primary diagnosis of acute appendicitis between October 2017 and June 2018. The patients were classified into three groups: the acute complicated appendicitis (suppurative and gangrenous) group, acute non-complicated appendicitis group and the control group. Red blood cell, white blood cell, lymphocyte, monocyte and platelets count, red blood cell distribution width, hemoglobin, hematocrit, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, and C-reactive protein were compared between the groups. Results: Thirty-nine (19.5%) patients with acute appendicitis had no complication and 161 (80.5%) developed a complication. The white blood cell count, neutrophil count and C-reactive protein serum levels were significantly higher, whereas the mean age, lymphocyte count, monocyte count, red blood cell distribution width and platelet count were significantly lower in acute appendicitis patients with and without complications compared with the control group. Moreover, combined analysis of best diagnostic parameters (white blood cell, neutrophil and lymphocyte counts) showed that combined parallel sensitivity and specificity were 98.7% and 42.7%, respectively. Conclusions: White blood cell, lymphocyte counts and neutrophil count could be used for diagnosis of acute appendicitis. More over the utility of mean platelet volume for differential diagnosis might be overestimated.
