Aberrant expression of krUppel-like factor 6 protein in colorectal cancers

AIM： TO investigate whether krüppel-like factor 6 （KLF6） plays an important role in the development and/or progression of colorectal cancer. METHODS： A total of 123 formalin-fixed and paraffinembedded colorectal cancer specimens were analyzed by immunohistochemistry using tissue microarray for the expression of KLF6 protein. The specimens were collected over a 3-year period in the laboratories at our large teaching hospital in Seoul, Republic of Korea. The correlation of KLF6 expression with clinicopathologic parameters was analyzed by χ^2 test and Bartholomew test. RESULTS： Normal colonic epithelium showed weak to moderate expression of KLF6, whereas reduced KLF 6 expression or loss of KLF6 expression was seen in 45 （36.6%） of the 123 colorectal carcinoma specimens. Interestingly, aberrant expression of KLF6 was detected in 25 （43.1%） of 58 cases with metastasis to regional lymph node and in 31 （47.0%） of 66 tumors more than 5 cm in size. Statistically, loss of KLF6 expression was significantly associated with tumor size （P〈0.05）. However, there was no significant correlation between KLF6 expression and Dukes＇ stage （Bartholomew test, P〉 0.05）, tumor location and lymph node metastasis （χ^2 test, P〉0.05）.CONCLUSION： Loss of KLF6 expression may be a common and early event in colorectal carcinogenesis.

The IC is fabricated in 0.18- m CMOS technology and packaged in LPCC *** fully monolithic transceiver consists of a receiver,a transmitter and a RF synthesizer with on-chip *** chip fully complies with the IEEE 802.15.4 WPAN standard in sub-GHz *** receiver sensitivity is 98dBm and the transmitter achieves less than 6.3 error vector magnitude（EVM） for 40kbps *** chip uses 1.8V power supply and the current consumption is 14mA for reception mode ad 16mA for transmission mode.

Several studies have demonstrated that human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells can promote neural regeneration following brain injury. However, the therapeutic effects of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells in guiding peripheral nerve regeneration remain poorly understood. This study was designed to investigate the effects of human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells on neural regeneration using a rat sciatic nerve crush injury model. Human umbilical cord blood-derived mesenchymal stem cells （1 ~ 106） or a PBS control were injected into the crush-injured segment of the sciatic nerve. Four weeks after cell injection, brain-derived neurotrophic factor and tyrosine kinase receptor B mRNA expression at the lesion site was increased in comparison to control. Furthermore, sciatic function index, Fluoro Gold-labeled neuron counts and axon density were also significantly increased when compared with control. An on-line scaling method for improving scalability of a database cluster

The explosive growth of the Internet and database applications has driven database to be more scalable and available, and able to support on line scaling without interrupting service. To support more client’s queries without downtime and degrading the response time, more nodes have to be scaled up while the database is running. This paper presents the overview of scalable and available database that satisfies the above characteristics. And we propose a novel on line scaling method. Our method improves the existing on line scaling method for fast response time and higher throughputs. Our proposed method reduces unnecessary network use, i.e., we decrease the number of data copy by reusing the backup data. Also, our on line scaling operation can be processed parallel by selecting adequate nodes as new node. Our performance study shows that our method results in significant reduction in data copy time.

The current research efforts of alloy design for advanced weathering steel are mainly focused on the formation of a dense and stable rust layer even in high Cl environments. The main role of Ca with respect to corrosion properties is the formation of CaO and CaS, which can dissolve significantly in thin water film condensed on the steel surface. Dissolution of CaO and CaS increases the alkalinity of thin water film, which enhances the formation of a dense and protective α-FeOOH in the rust. However, the (Al, Si, Ca)O type complex oxides do not attribute to increase pH value of the water film covered on the Ca-modified steel. Therefore, the important factor to increase pH value of the water film on the Ca-modified weathering steel is not content of total Ca but fraction of inclusions which are soluble under the water film. The rust layers containing Ni Mo and W lowered the permeability of Cl ions through the rust layer. It has an industrial significance for alloy design of the weathering steel since design of a lower cost weathering steel with higher corrosion resistance can be possible with addition of Mo or W instead of increasing the high cost Ni content to 2% or even higher.

Preliminary Level 1 PSA Results for Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor KALIMER-600 Conceptual Design

Core damage accident scenarios are identified for the metal-fueled, sodium-cooled fast reactor （SFR）, KALIMER-600, which is under development at KAERI. A level 1 probabilistic safety assessment （PSA） model is developed using the identified accident scenarios and the system fault tree models for the safety systems which are needed to mitigate the accidents. Using the preliminary level 1 PSA models, core damage frequency is estimated for the metal fueled KALIMER-600 conceptual design. Sensitivity studies for various design alternatives of safety systems are performed to find out optimal configurations in point of view of risk minimization.

TO THE EDITORAlthough the incidence of gastric cancer has declined somewhat in recent years, it remains one of the most common cancers worldwide[1], and is the most common cancer in East Asian countries such as Korea and Japan[2].In terms of the genetics of gastric cancer, mutations in CDH1 (E-cadberin) have been associated with hereditary diffuse gastric cancer (HDGC). The first germline mutation in CDH1 was reported in a large Maori HDGC family[1],with subsequent corroborations in Western and Asian HDGC families[3-5], CDH1 mutations are believed to be associated with up to 50% of HDGC families[5], but have not been linked with sporadic or intestinal types of gastric cancer[5].

Parallel recovery method in shared-nothing spatial database cluster system

Shared nothing spatial database cluster system provides high availability since a replicated node can continue service even if any node in cluster system was crashed. However if the failed node wouldn’t be recovered quickly, whole system performance will decrease since the other nodes must process the queries which the failed node may be processed. Therefore the recovery of cluster system is very important to provide the stable service. In most previous proposed techniques, external logs should be recorded in all nodes even if the failed node does not exist. So update transactions are processed slowly. Also recovery time of the failed node increases since a single storage for all database is used to record external logs in each node. Therefore we propose a parallel recovery method for recovering the failed node quickly.

Stress and sleep quality in doctors working on-call shifts are associated with functional gastrointestinal disorders

To investigate the role of sleep quality and psychosocial problems as predictors of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) in doctors that work 24 hour-on-call *** this cross-sectional observation study, using the Rome III Questionnaire and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), we analyzed 170 doctors with 24 hour-on-call *** the participants that had experienced a 24 hour-on-call shift within the last 6 mo, 48 (28.2%) had FGIDs. Overall prevalence of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD) were 16.5% and 17.1%, respectively, with 5.3% exhibiting both. Sleep scores (PSQI) (8.79 ± 2.71 vs 7.30 ± 3.43, P = 0.008), the presence of serious psychosocial alarm (83.3% vs 56.6%, P = 0.004), and the proportion of doctors who experienced over two months of recent on-call work (81.2% vs 68.9%, P = 0.044) were significantly different between individuals with or without FGIDs. Multivariate analysis revealed that presenting serious psychosocial alarm was an independent risk factor for prevalence of FD (OR = 5.47, 95%CI: 1.06-28.15, P = 0.042) and poor sleep quality (PSQI ≥ 6) was a predictor of IBS (OR = 4.17, 95%CI: 1.92-19.02, P = 0.016).CONCLUSIONPhysicians should recognize the role of sleep impairment and psychological stress in the development of FGIDs and a comprehensive approach should be considered to manage patients with FGIDs.

Protective effects of electroacupuncture on acetylsalicylic acid-induced acute gastritis in rats

AIM: To investigate the protective effects of electroacupuncture (EA) pretreatment on acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)-induced ulceration in rats. METHODS: We randomly divided 72 rats into three groups including control (administered with distilled water), ASA group (administered 100 mg/kg ASA) and EA group (administered EA + 100 mg/kg ASA). Each rat was fasted for 18 to 24 h before experimentation, and lesion scores, gastric acidity, cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 and -2 mRNA levels, and total nitric oxide (NO) concentration were measured. RESULTS: The lesion scores of the EA group were significantly lower than those of the ASA group. Gastric acidity of the ASA and EA groups was reduced compared to the control group. COX-1 and -2 mRNA levels were significantly increased in the EA group as compared to the control and ASA groups, and NO levels were also significantly increased in the EA group as compared to the ASA group. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that EA-mediated protection against ASA-induced ulceration in rats may occur via gastric defense components.
