The kinetics of the periodate oxidation of chromium(III)-complex, [CrIII(NTA)(Ala)(H2O)]-(NTA = Nitrilotriacetate and Ala = ß-alanine) to Cr(VI) have been carried out for the temperature range 15°C - 35°C under pseudo-first order conditions, >>?[complex]. Reaction obeyed first order dependence with respect to and [Cr(III)], and the rate of reaction increases with increasing of pH for the range 3.40 - 4.45. Experimentally, the mechanism of this reaction is found to be consistent with the rate law in which the hydroxo species, [CrIII(NTA)(Ala)(OH)]2- is considerably much more reactive than their conjugate acid. ΔH* and ΔS* have been calculated. It is proposed that electron transfer occurs through an inner-sphere mechanism via coordination of to chromium(III).

Preparation and Investigation of Mechanical and Physical Properties of Flax/Glass Fabric Reinforced Polymer Hybrid Composites

Synthetic reinforced composites affect the environment adversely and have become a global concern, causing increased natural composite demand for sustainability and cost effectiveness. Glass is a popular material that is highly consumed in reinforced composites for its superior mechanical strength. As opposed to that, flax obtained from flax stalks can be used as an alternative reinforcing material with synthetic fibers to minimize manmade fiber consumption. Hence, this research work addresses a few flax/glass-reinforced hybrid composites by using a thermoset polyester matrix. Here, six categories of samples are made, like neat flax, neat glass, and flax/glass fabric reinforced hybrid composite, followed by different stacking layer sequences and hand layout techniques during processing. Afterwards, the mechanical behavior, thermal stability, morphological behavior, and water absorption of hybrid samples were investigated. Among the developed samples, neat glass (NG) composite exhibits superior mechanical properties, while neat flax (NF) shows the lowest result. It is apparent that the mechanical properties and thermal stability of hybrid samples are in between NF and NG because, by adding glass with flax fabric, the strength of hybrid samples is increased. Moreover, it is noticeable that, due to multiple stacking layers of flax and glass, hybrid 3 and hybrid 4 show better strength than consecutive single stacking layers in hybrid 1 and hybrid 2. Among all hybrid composites, the H4 shows comparatively better mechanical and thermal properties due to having the glass layers on the outermost surface. In summary, this research work demonstrated the feasibility of flax fabric with glass fabric as a reinforced hybrid composite that can be used in automobile inner bodies, household furnishing, and home interior decoration.

Background and Aim of Study: The phosphodiesterase inhibitors (Sildenafil and Milrinone), Nitric Oxide donor Sodium Nitroprusside (SNP) and prostacyclin analogs are commonly used pulmonary vasodilators to treat pulmonary hypertension. In the past few years, we have used human pulmonary artery rings in vitro to evaluate pulmonary vascular resistance. The main objective of the current study is to document the pharmacological impact of clinically used prostacyclin analogs on the human pulmonary system in parallel with phosphodiesterase inhibitors and SNP. Methods: The study used human pulmonary artery rings of internal diameter of 2 - 4 mm and length of 2 mm. These were extracted from patients with lung resections. These rings were then mounted on a multiwire myograph, and changes in isometric tension were noted. Then, concentration response curves were constructed to Sildenafil (Sd), Milrinone (Mil), Sodium Nitroprusside (SNP), Epoprostenol (Ep), Iloprost (Ip) and Treprostinil (Tp). Results: 52 pulmonary artery rings were used in these experiments. Sildenafil, Milrinone, SNP, Epoprostenol, Iloprost and Treprostinil caused a concentration-dependent vasodilation in small human pulmonary arteries (pEC50: 5.97 ± 0.22, 5.99 ± 0.12, 7.64 ± 0.08, 7.53 ± 0.14, 8.84 ± 0.15 and 9.48 ± 0.13 respectively, n = 8 to 12). The efficacy for the same was in the order: Tp = Ip > Ep > Mil > SNP > Sd. The potency varied in the order: Tp > Ip > SNP > Ep > Mil > Sd. Conclusion: This research showed the efficacy as well as the potency of SNP and phosphodiesterase inhibitors and prostacyclin analogs on the human pulmonary vasculature. Treprostinil and Iloprost exhibited maximum relaxation. However, Sildenafil and SNP showed lesser impact. These effects need to be considered for clinical studies for enhanced patient outcomes.

Background: The emergence of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and extensively drug- resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) has highlighted the need for early accurate detection and drug susceptibility. Objective: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the accuracy of GeneX-pert MTB/RIF assay for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance. Methodology: This cross sectional study was done in the Department of Microbiology at Sir Salimullah Medical College, Dhaka and National Institute of Chest Disease & Hospital (NIDCH), Dhaka during the period of January 2014 to December 2014 for a period of 1 (one) year. Sputum samples from suspected MDR-TB patients were collected by purposive sampling technique from OPD of Sir Salimullah Medical College (SSMC) and NIDCH. Microscopy, liquid culture in liquid MGIT 960 media and GeneXpert MTB/RIF were done for MTB diagnosis and detection of rifampicin resistance. MGIT 960 media were also used for determination of drug resistance. Result: Liquid culture yielded higher growth (68%) from 100 samples while GeneXpert MTB assay showed similar result (67% positive and 33% negative). Drug susceptibility test in MGIT 960 media showed that out of 68 positive cases Rifampicin resistant cases were 15 (22.05%) whereas GeneXpert MTB assay detected 14 (20.89%) were Rifampicin resistant out of 67 MTB positive samples. When compared to liquid culture the calculated sensitivity, specificity, negative predictive value (NPV), positive predictive value (PPV) and accuracy of GeneXpert MTB were 98.52%, 100%, 96.96%, 100% and 99%. Conclusion: GeneXpert MTB/RIF assay is high detection rate of pulmonary tuberculosis and multidrug resistant tuberculosis.

Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery for Patients Presenting with Ventricular Arrhythmias: Propensity Matched Early and Late Outcome

Objectives: Patients with ischemic ventricular arrhythmia (IVA) in the form of fibrillation or tachycardia represent a surgical challenge. Evidence in the literature suggests that ventricular arrhythmia threatens survival even after cardiac surgery. We aim to review the results of our patients presenting with IVA with regard to short and long term outcome following cardiac surgery. Methods: This was a retrospective study of data entered prospectively into our cardiac surgical database between January 1999 and September 2015. A total of 9609 patients underwent Cardiac Surgery which included 54 patients after surviving IVA. The short- and long-term outcomes were compared to a propensity matched group. Actuarial survival was calculated using Kaplan Meier analysis. Results: The 54 study group patients were propensity matched on a 1:2 basis with a control group of non-IVA (n = 108). The baseline preoperative characteristics and risk factors were similar between the 2 groups and all cases underwent CABG only. Univariate analysis showed pacing postoperatively (33.3 vs 66.7%;p = 0.001) and postoperative ventricular arrhythmia (10 vs 22.2%;p = 0.039) to be significantly higher in the IVA group. Cox-multivariate analysis showed postoperative ventricular arrhythmia in either group (Hazard ratio = 1.5) to be the only significant factor to impact mortality (p 0.001). Long term survival was not significantly different between the two groups (10.4;CI: 9.08 - 11.75 vs 9.3;CI: 7.61 - 11.01 yrs, p = 0.3). Conclusion: Cardiac surgery on patients presenting with IVA can be performed safely yielding short and long term results equivalent to non-IVA cases. These patients should not be denied surgery with consideration of good long term outcome.

Epilepsy is a chronic and the fourth most common neurological disorder which affects people of all age groups. Recently research and awareness on epilepsy-related deaths have rapidly grown over the past two decades. Many previous studies are attributed to the guidelines that apprise health care professionals in handling these deaths, but there is a relative scarcity of information accessible for clinicians and pharmacists who are responsible for manufacturing or preparing the extemporaneous anti-epileptic suspensions in the hospitals. Mostly in partial seizures, phenytoin is one of the first-choice drugs. In Saudi Arabian hospitals, the extemporaneous preparation of phenytoin suspension is common, but the hot climatic weather in Saudi Arabia possesses stability problems that should be tackled as the prepared suspension should pass all the stability tests to ensure uniform dosage of the extemporaneous formulation. In the current study, the commercial capsules were used to prepare the oral phenytoin sodium extemporaneous suspension. The physical, chemical and microbiological stability of phenytoin sodium suspension is analyzed at various temperatures.

Anterior transolecranon dislocation of the elbow in a child: A case report and review of literature

Anterior transolecranon dislocation of the elbow is rarely observed in children, reported in only a small series. The present case involves an anterior transolecranon dislocation of the left elbow joint in a 7-year-old child, which was surgically treated. Two attempts of closed reduction failed because the radial head had buttonholed via the joint capsule. After its release, open reduction was easily performed; osteosynthesis of the olecranon was not performed. Remarkably, good result was obtained, despite a mild flexion deformity at the last follow-up. This case report aims to highlight this treatment method, which may be considered for such an uncommon injury.

DNA Fingerprinting of Essential Commercialized Medicinal Plants from Pakistan

Development of fingerprints based on DNA markers is necessary for proper identification and standardization of plant species. These techniques are widely used to develop an unquestionable method of plant identification to protect the patents and quality control for industry. In this study, fifteen commercially important medicinal plants of Pakistan were collected from botanical garden of Qarshi Industries (Pvt.) Ltd, Pakistan. The objective was to optimize the extraction of genomic DNA for use in a PCR-based random amplified polymorphic DNA marker approach. The initial protocol used 60 decamers to amplify scorable amplicons;only nine markers produced significant bands in genomic DNA of medicinal plants. These markers generated 51 bands ranging between 250 and 1600 bp. The most important property of genomic markers is polymorphism to enable specific identification;all the used markers showed 100% polymorphism across 15 different plants. Further, six decamers amplified specific bands to reliably identify 8 species. The amplified bands were arranged in a binary matrix and analyzed by DNAMAN version 5.2.2 statistical software. A homology tree was constructed using binary data for nine markers, and four major clusters/clades were observed. The Rose, Mentha and Stevia accessions had shown clear clustering and grouped in major clusters/clads I, II and III respectively. Sixty decamers amplified 51 polymorphic loci in the genomes of 15 commercially valuable accessions. Moreover clear phylogenetic construction was observed in the generation of homolog tree. This protocol could therefore be useful to provide a baseline to authenticate, identify and perform phylogenetic analysis of important medicinal plants used in the Pakistani herbal medicine industry.
