Sustainable Connectivity in a Community Repository

Persistent identifiers for research objects, researchers, organizations, and funders are the key to creating unambiguous and persistent connections across the global research infrastructure(GRI). Many repositories are implementing mechanisms to collect and integrate these identifiers into their submission and record curation processes. This bodes well for a well-connected future, but metadata for existing resources submitted in the past are missing these identifiers, thus missing the connections required for inclusion in the connected infrastructure. Re-curation of these metadata is required to make these connections. This paper introduces the global research infrastructure and demonstrates how repositories, and their user communities, can contribute to and benefit from connections to the global research infrastructure. The Dryad Data Repository has existed since 2008 and has successfully re-curated the repository metadata several times, adding identifiers for research organizations, funders, and researchers. Understanding and quantifying these successes depends on measuring repository and identifier connectivity. Metrics are described and applied to the entire repository here. Identifiers(Digital Object Identifiers, DOIs) for papers connected to datasets in Dryad have long been a critical part of the Dryad metadata creation and curation processes. Since 2019, the portion of datasets with connected papers has decreased from 100% to less than 40%. This decrease has significant ramifications for the re-curation efforts described above as connected papers have been an important source of metadata. In addition, missing connections to papers make understanding and re-using datasets more difficult. Connections between datasets and papers can be difficult to make because of time lags between submission and publication, lack of clear mechanisms for citing datasets and other research objects from papers, changing focus of researchers, and other obstacles. Domain repositories,*** that store,manage,and persist data pertaining to a specific scientific domain,are common and growing in the research *** of these repositories develop close,long-term communities made up of individuals and organizations that collect,analyze,and publish results based on the data in the *** between these datasets,papers,people,and organizations are an important part of the knowledge infrastructure surrounding the *** these research objects,people,and organizations can now be identified using various unique and persistent identifiers(PIDs)and it is possible for domain repositories to build on their existing communities to facilitate and accelerate the identifier adoption *** community members contribute to multiple datasets and articles,identifiers for them,once found,can be used multiple *** explore this idea by defining a connectivity metric and applying it to datasets collected and papers published by members of the UNAVCO *** identifiers in DataCite and Crossref metadata and spreading those identifiers through the UNAVCO DataCite metadata can increase connectivity from less than 10%to close to 50%for people and organizations.

＜正＞ This paper shows that the communication capacityof CDMA system can be enlarged further, by adopting array antennas, which involves a joint multiuser detection approach that is based on CDMA codes and their spatial information. Different from presented scheme of SDMA-CDMA systems, the CDMA systems with array antennas in this paper don’t have spatial coding, since it causes frequent spatial handoff problem. Thus the new CDMA systems can be of much higher communication capacity than the CDMA systems to be not sectored. Analyzing the array pattern of array antennas, we show that the interference of other sectors, also to be Multiple Access Interference （MAI）, can be effectively suppressed by the array antennas for a CDMA system to be sectored by array antennas. The design and analysis of \VLS multiuser detector in the new CDMA systems is presented to detect CDMA signals with different spatial information. Simulations show that a sectored CDMA system can be of better S1NR （Signal to Inference plus Noise Ratio） and BER （Bit Error Rate） performance even it is of three times of users compared the number of a cell of present CDMA systems.

＜正＞ In this paper, we investigate the adaptive modulation and coding （AMC） scheme in high data rate （HDR） system. The soft demodulation and Turbo decoder technique are proposed. Based on forward link of HDR, we do simulation to evaluate the AMC scheme. Besides, we have designed the transmitter and receiver using multiple antennas diversity techniques STS and BLAST. These two techniques can improve the system’s spectral efficiency greatly. For BLAST, we choose ZF-BLAST algorithm as detector. The simulation result shows that they require lower SNR than conventional antenna, and this can equally translate into supporting higher data rate in HDR.

Middle to Late Jurassic belemnites from the Spiti and Zanskar valleys in the Indian Himalayas were used for stable isotope(δ^(13)C, δ^(18)O) and element(Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca) analyses. Although the Himalayan orogeny deformed and altered a large portion of the collected fossils, cathodoluminescence and scanning electron microscopy in combination with analyses of iron and manganese contents allowed the identification of belemnites believed to still retain their original chemical composition. Results indicate a long-term temperature decrease from the Middle Callovian–Oxfordian to the Tithonian, which is proposed to have been caused by a concomitant drift of eastern Gondwana into higher palaeolatitudes. Reconstructed absolute temperatures depend on the used equation and assumed δ^(18)O value of seawater, but most likely varied between 17.6 ℃ to 27.6℃ in the Kimmeridgian and Tithonian with average values between 22 ℃ to 24 ℃. This way, temperatures were similar to slightly warmer than today at comparable latitudes. The reconstruction of absolute temperatures for the Middle Callovian–Oxfordian was hindered by a larger number of poorly preserved belemnites representing this time interval.

今天软件工程面临的主要挑战是改进软件生产过程。目前大多数软件系统是手工生产的,软件项目管理主要还是靠习惯的条条框框。软件工程面临的挑战是改变传统的基于计算机技术的操作方式。这个问题是美国国防部在Carnegie-Mellon大学(CMU)设立的软件工程研究所的主要研究课题。推动软件开发技术发展的成果包括观念(如面向对象的程序设计)、有关个人工作站的硬件改进、及为软件开发与项目管理提供一组集成化工具的程序设计环境。单靠设施与工具不足以使软件生产过程得到根本的改进。软件工程的未来方向必须强调能重用软件的设计和程序自动生成这类构造性方法。我们将简要地探讨实现上述想法的某些有前途的技术。

Comparing biomarkers and proteomic fingerprints for classification studies

Early disease detection is extremely important in the treatment and prognosis of many diseases, especially cancer. Often, proteomic fingerprints and a pattern recognition algorithm are used to classify the pathological condition of a given individual. It has been argued that accurate classification of the existing data implies an underlying biological significance. Two fingerprint-based classifiers, decision tree and medoid classification algorithm, and a biomarker-based classifier were examined using a published dataset of mass spectral peaks from 81 healthy individuals and 78 individuals with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). For all three methods, classifiers were constructed using the original data and the data after permuting the labels of the samples (BPH and healthy). The fingerprint-based classifiers produced accurate results for the original data, though the peaks used in a given classifier depended upon which samples were placed in the training set. Accurate results were also obtained for the dataset with permuted labels. In contrast, only three unique peaks were identified as putative biomarkers, producing a small number of reasonably accurate biomarker-based classifiers. The dataset with permuted labels was poorly classified. Since fingerprint-based classifiers accurately classified the dataset with permuted labels, the argument for biological significance from a fingerprint-based classifier must be questioned.
