BACKGROUND Chronic hepatitis C(CHC)is a health burden with consequent morbidity and *** biopsy is the gold standard for evaluating fibrosis and assessing disease severity and prognostic purposes *** altern-atives for liver biopsy such as transient elastography(TE)and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging(DW-MRI)are critical *** To evaluate TE and DW-MRI as noninvasive tools for predicting liver fibrosis in children with *** This prospective cross-sectional study initially recruited 100 children with CHC virus ***-four children completed the full set of investigations including liver stiffness measurement(LSM)using TE and measurement of apparent diffusion coefficient(ADC)of the liver and spleen using *** biopsies were evaluated for fibrosis using Ishak scoring *** and liver and spleen ADC were compared in different fibrosis stages and correlation analysis was performed with histopathological findings and other laboratory *** Most patients had moderate fibrosis(73.5%)while 26.5%had mild *** had severe fibrosis or *** majority(68.8%)had mild activity,while only 7.8%had moderate *** scores had a significant direct correlation with LSM(P=0.008)and were negatively correlated with both liver and spleen ADC but with no statistical significance(P=0.086 and P=0.145,respectively).Similarly,histopatho-logical activity correlated significantly with LSM(P=0.002)but not with liver or spleen ADC(P=0.84 and 0.98 respectively).LSM and liver ADC were able to significantly discriminate F3 from lower fibrosis stages(area under the curve=0.700 and 0.747,respectively)with a better performance of liver *** TE and liver ADC were helpful in predicting significant fibrosis in children with chronic hepatitis C virus infection with a better performance of liver ADC.

Objective: This study investigated cytotoxicity and induction of apoptosis in human cervical cancer cells(HELA) and prostate cancer cells(PC-3) using the most active fraction of Moringa peregrina seed ***: Dried and powdered seeds were extracted using 95% ethanol. The total ethanolic extract was further dissolved in distilled water and separated into petroleum ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts. Based on the results of in vitro anticancer studies of all extracts, the most highly active extract was selected for evaluation of apoptosis induction and cell cycle analysis on HELA and PC-3 cells at its half maximal inhibitory concentration using flow cytometry;DNA fragmentation by agarose gel electrophoresis and the expression of protein were measured by Western ***: The chloroform fraction from the ethanolic extract of M. peregrina(CFEE) was the most active antitumor fraction. The selectivity index, determined using the normal Vero cell line, indicated that CFEE had a high degree of selectivity against HELA and PC-3 cells. CFEE induced apoptosis, confirmed by cell cycle arrest at sub-G0 phase and DNA fragmentation. CFEE induced an increase in mRNA expression of caspase-3, a decrease in Bcl-2 mRNA expression, and decreased ATP levels. CFEE increased protein expression of caspase-3 and decreased protein expression of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase-1(PARP-1).Flow cytometric analysis showed an appreciable increase in the number of cells in the early apoptotic stage in CFEE-treated HELA and PC-3 cells. CFEE treatment significantly increased lipid peroxidation(malondialdehyde level) in HELA and PC-3 ***: Seed extract of M. peregrina displayed a significant antitumor effect through apoptosis induction in HELA and PC-3 cells.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa recognized as opportunistic pathogen causes severe infections for hospitalized patients, survive in and resist many antimicrobial agents like antibiotics and disinfectants. The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of EDTA in improving the sensitivity of resistant P. aeruginosa strains to disinfectants and Na-citrate. The strains used in this study were selected in house from Tanta University hospital, Egypt and tested for the synergistic effect of EDTA with Na-citrate or disinfectant(s). The results showed a significant effect of EDTA in improving P. aeruginosa sensitivity. In conclusion, we proposed that using EDTA in combination with different sanitization compounds and antimicrobial agents especially in hospitals aiming to control the spreading of infections.

A new europium(Ⅲ)complex containing(4-Methyl-2-oxo-2 H-chromen-7-yloxy)-acetic acid moiety(CMMC)was synthesized,characterized,and confirmed as antitumor agent and fluorescent *** spectroscopic measurements of Eu(Ⅲ)in the presence of CMMC were obtained in different *** results show that the strongest Eu(Ⅲ)emission bands were monitored in iso-propyl alcohol while the weakest Eu(Ⅲ)emission band was observed in *** interaction of Eu(Ⅲ)-(CMMC)2 complex with DNA was monitored using absorption and emission *** fluorescence titration measurements,the binding constants of DNA with Eu(Ⅲ)-(CMMC)_2 complex were found to be 1.04×10~5 L·mol^(-1) in Tris-HCl and 1.17×10~7 L·mol^(-1) in DMSO-Tris-HCl buffer(9∶1 V/V).Hypochromism was observed from the absorption titration experiment which indicates the intercalation of Eu(Ⅲ)-complex between the base pair of *** result further confirmed by fluorescent Ethidium bromide displacement *** fluorescence calibration curve was used for the determination of DNA with LOD of 1.2 ng in DMSO-Tris-HCl buffer(9∶1 V/V)and 5 ng in Tris-HCl *** preliminary antitumor investigation shows promising cytotoxicity against MDA-MB-231,MCF-7(mammary cancer),and PC-3(prostate carcinoma)cell lines with IC50 values of 40.63,25.42 and 30.25μmol·L^(-1),respectively.

Microbial fuel cells(M FCs)represent a new approach for treating w aste w ater along w ith electricity *** present study addressed electricity production from domestic w astew ater using a mediator-less double chamber M *** electricity production w as monitored under different operational conditions for both summer and w inter *** of the anodic and cathodic chambers resulted in a maximal current of 0.784 and 0.645 m A w ith the maximal pow er intensity of 209 and 117 m W/m2in pow er duration of 24 h for the summer and w inter samples,*** electron microscopy show ed that the bacterial biofilm formation on the anode w as denser for the summer sample than that w hen the w inter sample w as used,so w as the total bacterial ***,samples taken during summer w ere considered better in electricity production and w aste w ater treatment than those taken during w inter basically because of the high microbial load during the hot *** parallel,there w as a decrease in both biological oxygen demand(BOD5)and chemical oxygen demand(COD)values which reached 71.8%and 72.85%,respectively at the end of the operation process for the summer sample,w hile there w as no evident decrease for the w inter *** the operating conditions not only increased the potential of using domestic w aste w ater in microbial fuel cells to produce electricity,but also improved the quality of the domestic w aste w ater.

Objectives:The objective of this study is to assess the impact of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)infection during pregnancy on maternal and fetal outcome in relation to gestational ***:This retrospective study was conducted between May 2020 and July ***-five women infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)and hospitalized at a quarantine hospital were ***-four women received prenatal care at the hospital until delivery,while 31 dropped out from the study due to COVID-19 recovery and discharge before ***:COVID-19 was found in 83%of the pregnant women after 20 weeks of *** most common symptoms were cough and *** complications included severe pneumonia and *** maternal mortality rate was 9.2%.Premature rupture of membranes and severe hypertension during labor affected nearly 9%of the pregnant women who completed prenatal care until delivery at the *** labor occurred at a rate of 38.2%.There were seven(20.8%)stillbirths and two cases of infant ***:Hospitalized pregnant women who have coronavirus infection,lymphopenia,and a high C-reactive protein level were at a higher risk of developing severe illness,which can lead to maternal and neonatal complications.

Background and Aims:Hepatitis C virus(HCV)hepatotropism is associated with intra-peripheral blood mononuclear cell(PBMC)infection that causes post-treatment relapse in RNA seronegative *** understanding of the association of non-viremic hepatic fibrosis with positive anti-HCV IgG antibodies and active hepatocellular damage might be increased by PBMCs screening for intracellular ***,the goals of this study included evaluation of PBMCs PCR for diagnosing HCV infection,addressing PBMCs plus serum real-time(SRT)PCR benefits over SRT-PCR alone,studying intraPBMCs distribution of RNA sense and antisense strands,and identifying treatment feasibility in solitary intracellular ***:Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay,SRT-PCR and PBMCs PCR were used to evaluate HCV infection in 401 *** patients were classified into groups of negative controls(n=30),positive controls(n=63),non-viremia post-treatment(experienced;n=166)and na(i)ve(n=49)cases,and non-viremia positive PBMCs PCR na(i)ve(n=35)and experienced(n=58)***:The diagnosis of true positive and negative by PBMCs PCR and SRT-PCR had 100%and 96.7%compatibility *** PCR detected intracellular HCV infection in 49 out of 215 non-viremia patients;among them,na(i)ve cirrhotics had significantly higher number of intracellular infection than the na(i)ve non-cirrhotic(P<0.001)and experienced patients(P<0.0001).Antisense and sense strands were respectively recognized in na(i)ve and experienced cases(P=0.01218).Intracellular HCV strands were detected in 18.02%of experienced *** of intracellular RNA strands showed significant decline in experienced compared to na(i)ve patients(P<0.05).Conclusion:PBMCs PCR is a valid diagnostic test that can diagnose intracellular HCV when SRT-PCR is *** and sense strands are respectively recognized more often in na(i)ve and experienced *** expected overall relapsing rate in our cohort was 18.02%.Int

AIM: To evaluate transient elastography (TE) as a noninvasive tool in staging liver fibrosis compared with liver biopsy and morphometry in children with different chronic liver ***: A total of 90 children [50 with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV), 20 with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) and 20 with Wilson disease] were included in the study and underwent liver stiffness measurement (LSM) using TE. Liver biopsies were evaluated for fibrosis, qualitatively, by Ishak score and quantitatively by fibrosis area fraction (FAF) using digital image analysis (morphometry). LSM was correlated with fibrosis and other studied variables using spearman correlation. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was also performed to examine independent factors associated with LSM. Different cut-off values of LSM were calculated for predicting individual fibrosis stages using receiver-operating characteristic curve. Cut-off values with optimal clinical performance (optimal sensitivity and specificity simultaneously) were ***: The majority of HCV group had minimal activity (80%) and no/mild fibrosis (72%). On the other hand, the majority of AIH group had mild to moderate activity (70%) and moderate to severe fibrosis (95%) and all Wilson disease group had mild to moderate activity (100%) and moderate to severe fibrosis (100%). LSM correlated significantly with both FAF and Ishak scores and the correlation appeared better with the latter (r = 0.839 vs 0.879, P < 0.0001 for both). LSM discriminated individual stages of fibrosis with high performance. Sensitivity ranged from 81.4% to 100% and specificity ranged from 75.0% to 97.2%. When we compared LSM values for the same stage of fibrosis, they varied according to the different etiologies. Higher values were in AIH (16.15 ± 7.23 kPa) compared to Wilson disease (8.30 ± 0.84 kPa) and HCV groups (7.43 ± 1.73 kPa).
