Influence of laser parameters on the microstructures and surface properties in laser surface modification of biomedical magnesium alloys

Biodegradable implants from magnesium(Mg)alloys have emerged in the biomedical field especially in the orthopedic and cardiovascular stent applications owing to their low density,high specific strength,excellent machinability,good biocompatibility,and *** primary shortcoming of Mg-based implants is their low corrosion resistance in the physiological environment,which results in premature mechanical integrity loss before adequate healing and the production of excessive hydrogen gas,which is harmful to the body tissues and negatively affects the biocompatibility of the *** surface modification has recently received attention because it can improve the surface properties such as surface chemistry,roughness,topography,corrosion resistance,wear resistance,hydrophilicity,and thus cell response to the surface of the *** composition and microstructures including textures and phases of laser-treated surfaces depend largely on the laser processing parameters(input laser power,laser scan velocity,frequency,pulse duration,pressure,gas circulation,working time,spot size,beam focal position,and laser track overlap)and the thermophysical properties of the substrate(solubility,melting point,and boiling point).This review investigates the impacts of various laser surface modification techniques including laser surface melting,laser surface alloying,laser cladding,laser surface texturing,and laser shock peening,and highlights their significance in improving the surface properties of biodegradable Mg alloys for implant ***,we explore how different laser process parameters affect its composition,microstructure,and surface properties in each laser surface modification technique.

Electrochromism-induced adaptive fresh air pre-handling system for building energy saving

Building fresh air supply needs to meet certain regulations and fit people’s ever-growing indoor air quality ***,fresh air handling requires huge energy consumption that goes against the goal of net-zero energy ***,in this work,an adaptive fresh air pre-handling system is designed to reduce the cool-ing and heating loads of HVAC *** sky-facing surface of the system uses electrochromic mechanism to manipulate the optical properties and thus make full use of solar energy(solar heating)and deep space cold source(radiative cooling)by switching between heating and cooling *** the cooling mode,the sky-facing surface shows a transmittance of down to zero,while the reflectance is high at 0.89 on *** the heating mode,the electrochromic glass is highly transparent,allowing the sunlight to reach the solar heat *** obtain the energy-saving potential under different climates,six cities were selected from various climate regions in *** show that the adaptive fresh air pre-handling system can be effective in up to 55.4%time of a *** maximum energy-saving ratios for medium office,warehouse,and single-family house can reach up to 11.52%,26.62%,and 18.29%,*** addition,the system shows multi-climate adaptability and broad application scenarios,making it a potential solution to building energy saving.

The assessment of personal exposure in restaurants considering heat sources and ventilation strategies

Outbreaks of airborne infections during meal consumption in diverse restaurant settings have been extensively *** is widely recognized that effective ventilation strategies are essential to minimize the infection risk in indoor environments,and these strategies should be tailored to the heat *** purpose of this study is to compare the spatial distribution of risk in restaurant rooms that use mixing or displacement ventilation,specif-ically focusing on the heat sources used for different food types,namely hotpot,normal Chinese food,and iced *** Fluid Dynamics(CFD)was employed to assess exposure *** results indicate that the use of low-temperature heat sources can elevate the risk of infection by increasing the local vertical temperature *** comparison to no heat source,the risk increased by 190.9%and 99.6%for displacement and mixing ventilation strategies,*** mixing ventilation,both low-temperature and no heat sources showed lower infection risks when compared to displacement ***,displacement ventilation is found to be highly effective in reducing the risk of infection when using a high-temperature heat source,with only 12.3%of the infection risk observed in mixing ***,the use of displacement ventilation resulted in a significant reduction in the odors emitted by hotpot,which were instead absorbed by clothes in the mixing ven-tilation *** findings provide crucial insights into the development of appropriate ventilation strategies for reducing personal exposure to airborne infections in diverse restaurant ***,we recommend using displacement ventilation in restaurants that utilize high-temperature heat sources,as it can substantially reduce the risk of infection.

Objective: To explore the demographic and disease-related factors associated with acupuncture response in patients with chronic tension-type headache(CTTH). Methods: Using data from the randomized clinical trial(218 cases) consisting of 4 weeks of baseline assessment, 8 weeks of treatment, and 24 weeks of follow-up, participants were regrouped into responders(at least a 50% reduction in monthly headache days at week 16 compared with baseline) and non-responders. Twenty-three demographic and disease-related factors associated with acupuncture response in 183 participants were analyzed by multivariable logistic regression. Results: One hundred and nineteen(65.0%) participants were classified as responders. Four factors were significantly independently associated with acupuncture response, including treatment assignment, headache intensity at baseline, and 2 domains [general health(GH) and social functioning(SF)] from the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey quality of life questionnaire. Treatment assignment was associated with nonresponse: participants receiving true acupuncture were 3-time more likely to achieve a CTTH response than those receiving superficial acupuncture [odds ratio(OR) 0.322, 95% confidence interval(CI) 0.162 to 0.625, P=0.001]. Compared with patients with mild-intensity headache, patients with moderate-intensity headache were twice as likely to respond to acupuncture(OR 2.001, 95% CI 1.020 to 4.011, P=0.046). The likelihood of non-response increased by 4.5% with each unit increase in the GH grade(OR 0.955, 95% CI 0.917 to 0.993, P=0.024) while decreased by 3.8% with each unit increase in the SF grade(OR 1.038, 95% CI 1.009 to 1.069, P=0.011). Conclusions: Greater headache intensity, lower GH score, and higher SF score were associated with better acupuncture responses in CTTH patients. These 3 factors require independent validation as predictors of acupuncture effectiveness in CTTH.

Formaldehyde is an important carcinogen commonly found *** indoor sources have been intensively *** study on outdoor formaldehyde concentration,which is potentially an important source to indoors,remains *** study attempts to characterize temporal and spatial distribution of the atmospheric formalde-hyde concentration in Chinese *** variation of ambient formaldehyde was examined in 6 cities and peak hours were identified between 12:00 pm and 3:00 ***,outdoor formaldehyde concentrations were measured in the peak hours in 30 cities during the summer months of Jul.-Aug.,*** formaldehyde concentrations in the peak hours fell into a range of 0.005-0.087 mg/m^(3)(median value is 0.027 mg/m^(3)),87.7%of which have exceeded the chronic reference exposure criteria of 0.009 mg/m^(3) set by Office of Environmental Health Hazard *** risk analysis suggests that exposure to ambient formaldehyde could cause a median carcinogenic risk of 1.9×10^(−5)(3.17×10^(−6)-6.13×10^(−5)),higher than threshold limit of 10−*** correlation analysis of the 30 cities shows that ambient summertime atmospheric formaldehyde concentrations of the city are positively correlated with its Gross Domestic Product(r=0.48).We also found that the outdoor formaldehyde concentrations in urban areas(median:0.017 mg/m^(3))is slightly higher than those in suburban areas(median:0.013 mg/m^(3)).Results here prove that outdoor formaldehyde is ubiquitous in Chinese cities and reduces effectiveness of ventilation in dilution indoor *** it would underestimate air cleaner capacity needed by a factor of about *** should be accounted for in health analysis and air quality engineering control design of built environment in the future.
