Behavioral Effects of Deep Brain Stimulation of the Anterior Nucleus of Thalamus, Entorhinal Cortex and Fornix in a Rat Model of Alzheimer＇s Disease

Background：Recent clinical and preclinical studies have suggested that deep brain stimulation （DBS） can be used as a tool to enhance cognitive *** aim of the present study was to investigate the impact of DBS at three separate targets in the Papez circuit,including the anterior nucleus of thalamus （ANT）,the entorhinal cortex （EC）,and the fornix （FX）,on cognitive behaviors in an Alzheimer＇s disease （AD） rat ***：Forty-eight rats were subjected to an intrahippocampal injection ofamyloid peptides 1-42 to induce an AD *** were divided into six groups：DBS and sham DBS groups of ANT,EC,and *** learning and memory were assessed by the Morris water maze （MWM）.Recognition memory was investigated by the novel object recognition memory test （NORM）.Locomotor and anxiety-related behaviors were detected by the open field test （OF）.By using two-way analysis of variance （ANOVA）,behavior differences between the six groups were ***：In the MWM,the ANT,EC,and FX DBS groups performed differently in terms of the time spent in the platform zone （F（2.23） =6.04,P ＜ 0.01）,the frequency of platform crossing （F（2,23） =11.53,P ＜ 0.001）,and the percent time spent within the platform quadrant （F（2,23） =6.29,P ＜ 0.01）.In the NORM,the EC and FX DBS groups spent more time with the novel object,although the ANT DBS group did not （F（2,23） =10.03,P ＜ 0.001）.In the OF,all of the groups showed a similar total distance moved （F（1.42） =1.14,P =0.29）and relative time spent in the center （F（2,42） =0.56,P =0.58）.Conclusions：Our results demonstrated that DBS of the EC and FX facilitated hippocampus-dependent spatial memory more prominently thanANT *** addition,hippocampus-independent recognition memory was enhanced by EC and FX *** of the targets showed side-effects of anxiety or locomotor behaviors.

Review on the plastic instability of medium -Mn steels for identifying the formation mechanisms of Lüders and Portevin -Le Chatelier bands

Plastic instability,including both the discontinuous yielding and stress serrations,has been frequently observed during the tensile deformation of medium-Mn steels(MMnS)and has been intensively studied in recent ***,research results are controversial,and no consensus has been achieved regarding the ***,we first summarize all the possible factors that affect the yielding and flow stress serrations in MMnS,including the morphology and stability of austenite,the feature of the phase interface,and the deformation ***,we propose a universal mechanism to explain the conflicting experimental *** conclude that the discontinuous yielding can be attributed to the lack of mobile dislocation before deformation and the rapid dislocation multiplication at the beginning of plastic ***,the results show that the stress serrations are formed due to the pinning and depinning between dislocations and interstitial atoms in ***-induced martensitic transformation,influenced by the mechanical stability of austenite grain and deformation parameters,should not be the intrinsic cause of plastic ***,it can intensify or weaken the discontinuous yielding and the stress serrations by affecting the mobility and density of dislocations,as well as the interaction between the interstitial atoms and dislocations in austenite grains.

Background：Over past two decades,vagus nerve stimulation （VNS） has been widely used and reported to alleviate seizure frequency worldwide,however,so far,only hundreds of patients with pharmaco-resistant epilepsy （PRE） have been treated with VNS in China's *** study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of VNS for Chinese patients with PRE and compare its relationship with age cohort and ***：We retrospectively assessed the clinical outcome of 94 patients with PRE,who were treated with VNS at Beijing Fengtai Hospital and Beij ing Tiantan Hospital between November 2008 and April 2014 from our database of 106 consecutive *** clinical data analysis was retrospectively ***：Seizure frequency significantly decreased with VNS therapy after intermittent stimulation of the vagus *** last follow-up,we found Mchugh classifications of Class Ⅰ in 33 patients （35.1％）,Class Ⅱ in 27 patients （28.7％）,Class Ⅲ in 20 patients （21.3％）,Class Ⅳ in 3 patients （3.2％）,and Class Ⅴ in 11 patients （l 1.7％）.Notably,8 （8.5％） patients were seizure-free while ≥50％ seizure frequency reduction occurred in as many as 60 patients （63.8％）.Furthermore,with regard to the modified Engel classification,12 patients （12.8％） were classified as Class Ⅰ,l l patients （11.7％） were classified as Class Ⅱ,37 patients （39.4％） were classified as Class Ⅲ,34 patients （36.2％） were classified as Class Ⅳ.We also found that the factors of gender or age are not associated with clinical ***：This comparative study confirmed that VNS is a safe,well-tolerated,and effective treatment for Chinese PRE *** reduced the seizure frequency regardless of age or gender of studied patients.

Essential tremor （ET）, characterized by a postural and/or kinetic tremor and primarily manifested in theupper extremities, head, and other parts of the body, is one of the most common neurological disorders.1 The traditional target for the neurosurgical treatment of ET, the ventral intermedius nucleus （Vim） of the thalamus, has confirmed that chronic deep brain stimulation （DBS1 is an effective, standard, and primary procedure for ET. However, the loss of tremor suppression due to tolerance of chronic Vim stimulation, accompanied by other adverse effects, such as paresthesias, dysarthria, dysequilibrium, hyperhidrosis, and localized pain, has necessitated changes in the stimulation target in some patients.

Machine learning for carbonate formation drilling: Mud loss prediction using seismic attributes and mud loss records

Due to the complexity and variability of carbonate formation leakage zones, lost circulation prediction and control is one of the major challenges of carbonate drilling. It raises well-control risks and production expenses. This research utilizes the H oilfield as an example, employs seismic features to analyze mud loss prediction, and produces a complete set of pre-drilling mud loss prediction solutions. Firstly, 16seismic attributes are calculated based on the post-stack seismic data, and the mud loss rate per unit footage is specified. The sample set is constructed by extracting each attribute from the seismic trace surrounding 15 typical wells, with a ratio of 8:2 between the training set and the test set. With the calibration results for mud loss rate per unit footage, the nonlinear mapping relationship between seismic attributes and mud loss rate per unit size is established using the mixed density network ***, the influence of the number of sub-Gausses and the uncertainty coefficient on the model's prediction is evaluated. Finally, the model is used in conjunction with downhole drilling conditions to assess the risk of mud loss in various layers and along the wellbore trajectory. The study demonstrates that the mean relative errors of the model for training data and test data are 6.9% and 7.5%, respectively, and that R2is 90% and 88%, respectively, for training data and test data. The accuracy and efficacy of mud loss prediction may be greatly enhanced by combining 16 seismic attributes with the mud loss rate per unit footage and applying machine learning methods. The mud loss prediction model based on the MDN model can not only predict the mud loss rate but also objectively evaluate the prediction based on the quality of the data and the model.

High-entropy oxides(HEOs)are a new class of single-phase structures with unique electronic and catalytic properties;therefore,it is worthwhile to explore their applications in *** this study,a Pt/(FeCoNiCrAl)_(3)O_(4)nanohybrid using HEO as a support was developed as an efficient catalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).Pt/(FeCoNiCrAl)_(3)O_(4)exhibited high HER activity with a low overpotential of 22 mV at10 mA·cm^(-2),outperforming other binary,ternary,and quaternary *** HER activity of Pt/(FeCoNiCrAl)_(3)O_(4)was higher than that of a commercial Pt/C with a significantly lower Pt *** catalyst exhibited good activity and long-term stability(60 h)in an electrolytic water-splitting *** good activity can be attributed to the fact that the introduction of Pt effectively facilitates electronic interactions between Pt and the *** addition,the HEO substrate was more favorable for dispersing Pt particles,optimizing the electrochemical specific surface area,and significantly reducing the charge resistance of the *** study extends the application of HEOs in electrocatalysis and demonstrates the promising prospects of HEOs as supports for electrocatalysts.

Acute Fornix Deep Brain Stimulation Improves Hippocampal Glucose Metabolism in Aged Mice

Background： A beneficial memory effect of acute formix deep brain stimulation （DBS） has been reported in clinical studies. The aim of this study was to investigate the acute changes in glucose metabolism induced by fornix DBS. Methods： First, the Morris water maze test and novel object recognition memory test were used to confirm declined memory in aged mice （C57BL/6, 20-22 months old）. Then, four groups of mice were used as follows： aged mice with stimulation （n = 12）, aged mice with sham-stimulation （n = 8）, adult mice （3-4 months old） with stimulation （n = 12）, and adult mice with sham-stimulation （n = 8）. lpsilateral hippocampal glucose metabolism and glutamate levels were measured in vivo by microdialysis before, during, and after fornix DBS treatment. Histological staining was used to verify the localization of electrodes and mice with inaccurate placement were excluded from subsequent analyses. The effects of fornix DBS on extracellular glucose, lactate, pyruvate, and glutamate levels over time were analyzed by repeated-measures analysis of variance followed by Fisher＇s least significant difference post hoc test. Results： The aged mice had a higher basal lactate/pyruvate ratio （LPR） and lactate/glucose ratio （LGR） than the adult mice （LPR： 0.34 ± 0.04 vs. 0.13 ± 0.02, t = 4.626, P 〈 0.0001 ; LGR： 6.06± 0.59 vs. 4.14 ± 0.36, t = 2.823, P 〈 0.01 ）. Fomix DBS decreased the ipsilateral hippocampal pyruvate and lactate levels （P 〈 0.05）, but the glucose levels were not obviously changed in aged mice. Similarly, the LGR and LPR also decreased in aged mice after fornix DBS treatment （P 〈 0.05）. Glucose metabolism in adult mice was not significantly influenced by tbrnix DBS. In addition, fornix DBS significantly decreased the ipsilateral hippocampal extracellular levels of glutamate in aged mice （P 〈 0.05）, while significant alterations were not found in the adult mice.
