Anti-oxidation activity of ethanol extracts from natural thalli of lichens

Screening test on anti-oxidation activity using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) was performed for 99 ethanol extracts of 85 species of natural thalli of lichens in order to find novel anti-oxidation *** 17 extracts of natural thalli showed high anti-oxidation *** them,the activities of extracts from Hypogymnia vittata,Peltigera aphthosa,Nephromopsis ornata,Pseudevernia furfuracea,Cladonia vulcani and Peltigera elizabethae were *** of Peltigera *** higher activity than those of other *** ethanol extract of *** had been separated into ethyl acetate-soluble and water-soluble *** anti-oxidative spots were found only in the water-soluble fractions by thin-layer *** compound in the lower spot had the same Rf value,UV spectrum,and color as authentic solorinine that was previously found as a unique quaternary ammonium compound from Peltigera *** now report that the hydrophilic lichen substance,solorinine showed a nearly same anti-oxidation activity(EC50=120?mol/Lol/L) as standard antioxidant Trolox(EC50=150?mol/L).

Contents of Care and Perception of Home Hospice Nurses Who Work at Visiting Medical Treatment Hospitals

Goal: The aim of this study was to examine the perception of nurses who worked at the clinic which proposed home hospice and contents of care to better understand home hospice and enhance home care. Methods: Six nurses who worked at the clinic where proposed visiting medical treatment participated voluntarily. They received one interview for approximately one hour, in which they narrated their perception of home hospice and content of nursing care. The narrative was recorded by an IC recorder and analyzed as contents analysis. This study was approved by the Ethical Board at St. Mary’s College. Results: About the content of nursing care, some categories were selected such as “Understanding a patient as a living person,” “Examining if a patient and caregiver live at ease,” or “Caring for a caregiver accepting a loved one’s death and care given at death.” Nurses perceived the theme as “Time and space for listening carefully,” the theme as “Feeling of responsibility and attractiveness of work,” the theme as the “Economics and manpower to continue home hospice,” the as a “Required connection between hospitals and home hospice clinics.” Conclusion: Visiting medical treatment nurses understand a patient and a family as living people based on intimate relationships, support them as the disease progresses, and connect to a visiting nurse station. They perceived that “patients can enjoy freedom;the nurses had responsibility and strong relationships. They felt the economic or man-power needs to continue and the requirement of a connection between hospitals and home hospice clinics.

BACKGROUND Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma(DDCS)accounts for 10%of all chondrosarcomas and has the poorest outcome,with a 5-year survival rate of 7%-25%.DDCS commonly occurs in the femur and pelvis,whereas DDCS of the finger is extremely ***,the histological findings of preexisting solitary enchondroma samples are important and valuable for diagnosing malignant *** SUMMARY We report our experience with DDCS in the proximal phalanx of the left middle finger of an 87-year-old *** had undergone surgery for enchondroma,with curettage and artificial bone grafting,11 years ago,in the same *** years after the primary surgery,the left middle finger gradually started to enlarge,and the growth speed increased in the past *** radiographs showed an expansive osteolytic lesion with calcifications and residual grafting *** to the suspicion of malignancy,we performed ray *** findings revealed an abrupt transition between the low-grade chondrosarcoma and dedifferentiated sarcoma *** dedifferentiated components showed the features of a high-grade undifferentiated pleomorphic *** patient was diagnosed with DDCS arising from a preexisting *** had no local recurrence or distant metastasis and died of pneumonia 6 years and 10 months after the second *** The histological findings of a precursor lesion showed a typical enchondroma,suggesting that DDCS can arise from enchondroma.

Acceptance Process Model of Patients’ Life with Terminally Ill in Home Hospice and Development of a Narrative Approach for Nurses

The prime aim of this study was to find a psychological process model of patients with terminally ill in home hospice investigating the contents of a narrative, and the secondary aim was to create a narrative approach program for nurses. Ten patients narrated their thinking or feelings along with some prepared questions in two sessions. Patients’ narrative data were categorized by a qualitative analysis and 34 categories were chosen. They perceived good points in home hospice like “Being able to spend time freely”, “Close relationships with care staffs and strong confidence”, though they perceived trouble points like “Suffering from putting burden on the people around me” or “Worries about economic problems”. They perceived psychological changes through illness like “Having peace of mind and becoming kind” “Desire for a natural death”. Moreover they perceived their life like “Acceptance of one’s life including illness” “My life lived with satisfaction”. They regarded as important things such as “Spending life time usefully” “Feelings of my family members and of those around me”, and as hopes “Hope to leave my living proof” “Living left time to the fullest”. From these categories, we propose an acceptance model of patients’ life and a narrative program for nurses.

Perception of Reasons of Decision Making for Home Hospice, Benefits and Difficulties in Home Hospice Care by Family Caregivers

Objective: Home hospice is one of the most important places to spend time at the end of life. It is necessary to clarify the perception of home hospice for family caregivers in order to choose home hospice. The aim of the study was to examine the perceptions of family caregivers about the reasons of decision making for home hospice care, benefits, difficulties with home hospice, and copings. Methods: Ten family caregivers who were taking care of a patient with a terminal illness at home at the time of the study participated voluntary. They participated in two interviews in the narrative approach. In the first session, they narrated reasons of decision making for home hospice, benefits, difficulties, and copings. In the second session, they narrated importance or growth in self. We analyzed narratives in the first session using qualitative analysis. This study was approved by the Ethical Board at St. Mary’s College. Results: Categories of the reasons for the decision making to undergo home hospice were “Being natural to take care of a loved one at home” or “Home hospice matching a family caregiver’s life”. Categories of benefits at home hospice were “To strengthen family’s ties” or “Both a loved one and a family spending time together”. Categories of difficulties were “Difficulty of economic problems” or “Difficulties of mental and physical symptoms”. Conclusion: We concluded that family caregivers perceived benefits and difficulties, and they could cope with difficulties, though spiritual pain remained. We need continuous support for family caregivers at home hospice.

Background: Magnocellular deficit theory is among the different hypotheses that have been proposed to explain the pathophysiology of developmental dyslexia (DD). Dysfunction of the magnocellular system in DD has been investigated using mainly visual evoked potentials (VEPs), particularly transient VEPs, although recently abnormal steady-state VEPs have also been reported. The brain regions responsible for the abnormal VEPs in DD have yet to be elucidated, however. In this study, we performed functional magnetic resonance imaging and electroencephalography (fMRI-EEG) simultaneously to elucidate the brain areas that were found in a previous study to be activated through stimulation of the magnocellular system, and then investigated the mechanism involved in the dysfunction seen in ***: Subjects were 20 healthy individuals (TYP group;13 men, 7 women;mean ± standard deviation age, 26.3 ± 5.53 years) and 2 men with DD (aged 42 and 30 years). Images of brain activity were acquired with 3-Tesla MRI while the viewing the reversal of low-spatial frequency and low-contrast black-and-white sinusoidal gratings. EEG was recorded concurrently to obtain steady-state ***: Stimulus frequency-dependent VEPs were observed in the posterior region of the brain in the TYP group;however, VEP amplitudes in both DD patients were clearly smaller than those in TYP. fMRI images revealed that both the primary and secondary visual cortices were activated by black-and- white sinusoidal gratings in the TYP group, whereas activity in the visual cortex overall was reduced in both DD ***: Present low spatial and high reversal frequency visual stimuli activated the primary visual cortex presumably through predominant activation of the magnocellular pathway. This finding indicates that some cases of adult patients of DD involve impairment of the visual magnocellular system.

Traditional Chinese herbal medicines (Kampo) are used to improve flow characteristics of blood (Oketsu). We assumed that by preventing stagnation of blood, these medicines may be beneficial not only in venous but in arterial thrombotic conditions. The present study aimed to assess the antithrombotic effect of three Kampo, using well-established in vitro and animal models of thrombosis. Western-style highfat diet containing 1% Kampo (Shimotsuto, Juzentaihoto or Unseiin) was administered to C57BL/6 mice for 12 weeks. The effect on thrombus formation by laser irradiation of the carotid artery of mice was assessed. In addition the ex-vivo technique of shear-induced platelet reactivity measurement (haemostatometry) and the in vivo test of endothelial function (flowmediated vasodilation) were also used to assess the mechanism of antithrombotic effect. All three medicines have significantly inhibited arterial thrombus formation in mice. According to our studies, the mechanism of antithrombotic effect is based on the inhibition of shear-induced platelet reac- tivity and stimulation of endothelial function (Unseiin). It is assumed that the common ingredients Japanese Angelica Root, Cnidium Rhizome, Peony Root and Rehmannia Root could be responsible for the observed antithrombotic effect.

Prognostic Significance of Hematologic Markers in Patients with Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinomas

Aim: To assess the prognostic value of hematologic markers for cancers of the head and neck region, according to tumor site. Methods: We reviewed the data of 441 patients diagnosed with head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) between 2006 and 2014. Overall survival rates were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the hazard ratio (HR) for death, according to hematologic markers. Results: In the univariate analyses, hemoglobin concentration;leukocyte, neutrophil, monocyte, and platelet counts;and the platelet-lymphocyte ratio were associated with overall survival. In the multivariate analyses, hemoglobin concentration (HR 0.55, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.38 - 0.78, p Conclusions: Several hematologic markers have prognostic significance for patients with HNSCC, however, the magnitude of the effect depends on the tumor site.
