Increasing occurrence of intrinsically antimicrobial-resistant,human pathogens and the protective biofilm-mode in which they grow,dictates a need for the alternative control of infectious *** bacteria utilize dispersal mechanisms to detach parts of a biofilm as part of the biofilm life-cycle during times of nutrient scarcity or *** here identify recent advances and future challenges in the development of dispersants as a new infection-control ***(DNase)and other extracellular enzymes can disrupt the extracellular matrix of a biofilm to cause ***,a variety of small molecules,reactive oxygen species,nitric oxide releasing compounds,peptides and molecules regulating signaling pathways in biofilms have been described as *** their own,dispersants do not inhibit bacterial growth or kill bacterial *** natural,as well as artificial dispersants,are unstable and hydrophobic which necessitate their encapsulation in smart nanocarriers,like p h-responsive micelles,liposomes or *** on their composition,nanoparticles can also possess intrinsic dispersant *** dispersed from an infectious biofilm end up in the blood circulation where they are cleared by host immune ***,this sudden increase in bacterial concentration can also cause *** antibiotic loading of nanoparticles with dispersant properties or combined administration of dispersants and antibiotics can counter this ***,biofilm remaining after dispersant administration appears more susceptible to existing *** part of the natural biofilm life-cycle,no signs of"dispersant-resistance"have been *** are therewith promising for the control of infectious biofilms.

An equivalence canonical form of a matrix triplet over an arbitrary division ring with applications

We in this paper give a decomposition concerning the general matrix triplet over an arbitrary divisionring F with the same row or column numbers. We also design a practical algorithm for the decomposition of thematrix triplet. As applications, we present necessary and suficient conditions for the existence of the generalsolutions to the system of matrix equations DXA = C1, EXB = C2, F XC = C3 and the matrix equation AXD + BY E + CZF = Gover F. We give the expressions of the general solutions to the system and the matrix equation when thesolvability conditions are satisfied. Moreover, we present numerical examples to illustrate the results of thispaper. We also mention the other applications of the equivalence canonical form, for instance, for the compressionof color images.

Understanding the thermodynamic properties of electrolyte solutions is of vital importance for a myriad of physiological and technological *** mean activity coefficientγ±is associated with the deviation of an electrolyte solution from its ideal behavior and may be obtained by combining the Debye-hückel(Dh)and Born(B)***,the Dh and B equations depend on the concentration and temperature-dependent static permittivity of the solutionεr(c,T)and the size of the solvated ions ri,whose experimental data is often not ***,we use a combination of molecular dynamics and density functional theory to predictεr(c,T)and ri,which enables us to apply the Dh and B equations to any technologically relevant aqueous and nonaqueous electrolyte at any concentration and temperature of interest.

healthy cartilage is a water-filled super lubricious *** type II provides it structural stability,and proteoglycans absorb water to keep the cartilage in a swollen condition,providing it the ability to creep and provide weeping ***(OA)is a degenerative and debilitating disorder of diarthrodial joints,where articular cartilage damage originates from enzymatic degradation and mechanical damage(wear).The objective of this research is to observe the level of cartilage damage present in knee arthroplasty patients and to understand the friction and creep behavior of enzymatically degraded bovine cartilage in ***(Lat)and medial(Med)condylar cartilages from OA patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty showed signs of enzymatic degradation and mechanical *** cartilages were exposed to collagenase III and chondroitinase ABC to degrade collagen and proteoglycans,*** loss of proteoglycans or collagen network and morphological changes were observed through histology and the atomic force microscope(AFM),respectively.A significant effect on creep due to enzymatic treatment was not *** the enzymatic treatment was found to significantly decrease the coefficient of friction(COF)at 4 N,while higher COF was shown from chondroitinase ABC degraded cartilage at 40 *** III treatment leads to the release of intact proteoglycans at the sliding interface,while chondroitinase ABC treatment leads to the loss of chondroitin sulfate(CS)from the *** ABC-digested bovine cartilage mimicked patient samples the best because of the similar distributions of proteoglycans,collagen network,and friction behavior.

Numerical simulation of precipitation kinetics in multicomponent alloys

A universal numerical model based on the particle size distribution(PSD)approach has been developed for the simulation of precipitation kinetics in multicomponent alloys during isothermal *** was implemented utilizing the classical nucleation theory(CNT).Growth and coarsening were modeled by a single growth kinetics equation,which is constructed based on the interfacial diffusion flux balance and the capillarity *** partial off-diagonal terms in the diffusion matrix(diffusion of individual components in the matrix)were taken into account in the calculations to minimize the computational cost while coupling with CALPhAD to extract thermodynamics equilibrium around the interface.A new feature of the model is the incorporation of a more realistic spatial site distribution via a Voronoi construction in the characteristic cell,for the purpose of modifying the diffusion *** predictions of the precipitate dimensions and the precipitation kinetics were compared with the atom probe tomography(APT)measurements on ternary Ni-Al-Cr alloys isothermally aged at 873 *** is found that the temporal evolution of the dimensions and composition of the precipitates is well captured,as is the dependence on changes in the alloy *** new modification with Voronoi construction demonstrates that the overall precipitation kinetics depends on the density and the spatial site distribution of *** ability to handle sophisticated alloy chemistries by quantitative equations,the compositional sensitivity of microstructural characteristics emerging from the simulation results,and the ability to visualize the spatial distribution of precipitates make the work very promising for multicomponent alloy design and optimization.

Invasive ant learning is not affected by seven potential neuroactive chemicals

Argentine ants Linepithema humile are one of the most damaging invasive alien species *** or disrupting cognitive abilities,such as learning,has the potential to improve management efforts,for example by increasing preference for a bait,or improving ants'ability to learn its characteristics or ***-feeding insects are often the victims of psychoactive manipulation,with plants lacing their nectar with secondary metabolites such as alkaloids and non-protein amino acids which often alter learning,foraging,or ***,the effect of neuroactive chemicals has seldomly been explored in ***,we test the effects of seven potential neuroactive chemicals-two alkaloids:caffeine and nicotine;two biogenic amines:dopamine and octopamine,and three nonprotein amino acids:β-alanine,GABA and taurineon the cognitive abilities of invasive *** using bifurcation *** results confirm that these ants are strong associative learners,requiring as little as one experience to develop an ***,we show no short-term effect of any of the chemicals tested on spatial learning,and in addition no effect of caffeine on short-term olfactory *** lack of effect is surprising,given the extensive reports of the tested chemicals affecting learning and foraging in *** mismatch could be due to the heavy bias towards bees in the literature,a positive result publicationbias,ordifferences inmethodology.

Late Quaternary sinistral slip rate along the Altyn Tagh fault and its structural transformation model

Based on technical processing of high-resolution SPOT images and aerophotos, detailed mapping of offset landforms in combination with field examination and displacement measurement, and dating of offset geomorphic surfaces by using carbon fourteen (14C), cos- mogenic nuclides (10Be+26Al) and thermoluminescence (TL) methods, the holocene sinistral slip rates on different segments of the Altyn Tagh Fault (ATF) are obtained. The slip rates reach 17.5 ±2 mm/a on the central and western segments west of Aksay Town, 11±3.5 mm/a on the Subei-Shibaocheng segment, 4.8±1.0 mm/a on the Sulehe segment and only 2.2±0.2 mm/a on the Kuantanshan segment, an easternmost segment of the ATF. The sudden change points for loss of sinistral slip rates are located at the Subei, Shibaocheng and Shulehe triple junctions where NW-trending active thrust faults splay from the ATF and propagate southeastward. Slip vector analyses indicate that the loss of the sinistral slip rates from west to east across a triple junction has structurally transformed into local crustal shortening perpendicular to the active thrust faults and strong uplifting of the thrust sheets to form the NW-trending Danghe Nanshan, Daxueshan and Qilianshan Ranges. Therefore, the eastward extrusion of the northern Qing- hai-Tibetan Plateau is limited and this is in accord with “the imbricated thrusting transforma- tion-limited extrusion model”.

Analysis of the inflection points of height-diameter models

The inflection point is an important feature of sigmoidal height-diameter(h-D)*** is often cited as one of the properties favoring sigmoidal model ***,there are very few studies analyzing the inflection points of h-D *** goals of this study were to theoretically and empirically examine the behaviors of inflection points of six common h-D models with a regional *** six models were the Wykoff(WYK),Schumacher(SCh),Curtis(CUR),hossfeldⅣ(hOS),von Bertalanffy-Richards(VBR),and Gompertz(GPZ)*** models were first fitted in their base forms with tree species as random effects and were then expanded to include functional traits and spatial *** distributions of the estimated inflection points were similar between the two-parameter models WYK,SCh,and CUR,but were different between the threeparameter models hOS,VBR,and *** produced some of the largest inflection *** and VBR produced concave h-D curves without inflection points for 12.7%and 39.7%of the tree *** species or decreasing shade tolerance resulted in larger inflection *** trends in the estimated inflection points of hOS and VBR were entirely opposite across the ***,hOS could produce concave h-D curves for portions of the *** on the studied behaviors,the choice between two-parameter models may not *** recommend comparing seve ral three-parameter model forms for consistency in estimated inflection points before deciding on *** sigmoidal models to have inflection points does not necessarily mean that they will produce fitted curves with *** study highlights the need to integrate analysis of inflection points into modeling h-D relationships.
