Connecting inorganic mercury and lead measurements in blood to dietary sources of exposure that may impact child development

Pre-natal and post-natal chemical exposures and co-exposures from a variety of sources including contaminated air,water,soil,and food are common and associated with poorer birth and child health *** diet is a contributing factor in the development of child behavioral *** behavior and learning can be adversely impacted when gene expression is altered by dietary transcription factors such as zinc insufficiency or deficiency or by exposure to toxic substances permitted in our food supply such as mercury,lead,or organophosphate pesticide *** with autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorders exhibit decreased or impaired PON1 gene activity which is needed by the body to metabolize and excrete neurotoxic organophosphate *** this current review we present an updated macroepigenetic model that explains how dietary inorganic mercury and lead exposures from unhealthy diet may lead to elevated blood mercury and/or lead levels and the development of symptoms associated with the autism and attention deficithyperactivity ***1 gene activity may be suppressed by inadequate dietary calcium,selenium,and fatty acid intake or exposures to lead or *** model may assist clinicians in diagnosing and treating the symptoms associated with these childhood neurodevelopmental *** for future research are provided based on the updated model and review of recently published literature.

The analysis of hexavalent chromium, Cr(VI), in soil and sediment samples has been predominantly carried out in materials containing elevated levels. Reliable analysis of trace-level of Cr(VI) in sediment samples remains challenging. Cr(VI) analyses with multipoint calibration and speciated isotope dilution (SID) adapted from U.S. EPA method 6800 were used to measure lower-level Cr(VI) on an ion chromatograph coupled with a tandem mass spectrometer (IC-mS/mS). Lake sediment samples were collected from various locations in Northern Ontario and Cr(VI) was extracted using both alkaline digestion and ethylene diaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) extraction. Certified reference materials were extracted and analyzed by IC-mS/mS and UV-VIS detection. The SID-mS approach allowed for the quantification of Cr(VI) in samples with concentration levels below 0.5 μg.g-1 wet weight.

Spread of common native and invasive grasses and ruderal trees following anthropogenic disturbances in a tropical dry forest

Introduction:A fundamental challenge to the integrity of tropical dry forest ecosystems is the invasion of nonnative grass *** grasses compete for resources and fuel anthropogenic *** 2012,a bulldozer from the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority cleared a 570-m trail from a state road into a mature dry forest section of Guánica Forest to control a *** monitored colonization by a non-native invasive grass(megathyrsus maximus),a highly invasive tree(Leucaena leucocephala),and a native grass(Uniola virgata),as well as natural regeneration,along the bulldozer *** determined whether bulldozing facilitated colonization by these species into the forest and the extent of ***:Distance from propagule source and temporal variations strongly influenced colonization by our three focal *** maximus invaded along the trail from source populations by the state *** establishment of new colonies of *** seedlings went as far as 570 m inside the forest(i.e.,at the end of the bulldozer trail),but we found most new colonies within 270 m of the *** leucocephala exhibited a similar spreading *** disturbance,Uniola virgata was distributed widely across the forest,but the highest densities were found in areas near the latter portion(>401 m)of the bulldozer ***,the species formed new clumps along more than half of the trail(250 to 570 m),apparently colonizing from undisturbed patches ***:Bulldozing facilitated the invasion of non-native *** projected community assemblage will be more fire-prone than before since *** carries fire across the landscape better than ***,emphasizing the capacity of invasive plant colonization to alter local ecological processes after only a single wildfire and bulldoze *** results provide a valuable baseline for short-term vegetation response to anthropogenic disturbances in tropical semi-deciduous dry forests.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large hadron Collider,as Standard model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.

Vegetation Dynamics and Its Relationship with Climatic Factors in the Changbai mountain Natural Reserve

This study examined the temporal variation of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index （NDVI） and its relationship with climatic factors in the Changbai mountain Natural Reserve （CmNR） during 2000 - 2009. The results showed as follows. The average NDVI values increased at a rate of 0.0024 year-1. The increase rate differed with vegetation types, such as 0.0034 year-1 for forest and 0.0017 year-1 for tundra. Trend analyses revealed a consistent NDVI increase at the start and end of the growing season but little variation or decrease observed in July during the study period. The NDVI in CmNR showed a stronger correlation with temperature than with precipitation, especially in spring and autumn. A stronger correlation was observed between NDVI and temperature in the tundra zone （2,000-2,600m） than in the coniferous forest （1,100-1,700m） and Korean pine-broadleaved mixed forest （7oo-1,1oom） zones. The results indicate that vegetation at higher elevations is more sensitive to temperature change. NDVI variation had a strong correlation with temperature change （r=0.7311, p〈0.01） but less significant correlation with precipitation change. The result indicates that temperature can serve as a main indicator of vegetation sensitivity in the CmNR.

A study of the NW Kakamas Domain in South Africa/Namibia provides a new,unified lithostratigraphy and evolutionary history applicable to the whole Namaqua *** mesoproterozoic history ranges from~1350 ma to 960 ma,but isotopic evidence suggests it was built upon pre-existing Paleoproterozoic continental crust that extended west from the Archaean *** eastern Namaqualand,early rift-related magmatism and sedimentation at~1350 ma occurred in a confined ocean *** tectonic reversal and subduction at~1290–1240 ma led to establishment of the Areachap,Konkiep and Kaaien *** the Kakamas Domain,widespread deposition of pelitic sediments occurred at~1220 ma(Narries Group).These contain detrital zircons derived from proximal crust with ages between~2020 ma and 1800 ma(western Palaeoproterozoic domains)and 1350–1240 ma(eastern early Namaqua domains),suggesting pre-sedimentation *** pelites underwent granulite grade metamorphism at~1210 ma(peak conditions:4.5–6 kbar and 770–850°C),associated with voluminous,predominantly S-type granitoid orthogneisses between~1210 ma and 1190 ma(Eendoorn and ham River Suites)and low-angle ductile(D_(2))deformation which continued until~1110 ma,interspersed with periods of *** enduring P-T regime is inconsistent with the expected crustal over-thickening associated with the generally-accepted collision-accretion Namaqualand ***,we propose the Namaqua Sector is a‘hot orogen’developed in a wide continental back-arc with subduction west of the present-day *** observed high geotherm resulted from thinned back-arc lithosphere accompanied by an influx of mantle-derived *** D_(2)deformation resulted from"bottom-driven"tectonics and viscous drag within the crust by convective flow in the underlying asthenospheric *** extended tectonothermal regime ceased at~1110 ma when SW-directed thrusting stacked the Namaqua Domains into their current positions,constrained in
