Celiac disease as potential obstacle to childbearing

AIM: The authors have aimed at confirming or excluding gluten sensitivity in infertile couples. PATIENTS AND METHODS: between 2004 and 2010, at our outpatient clinics of immunology, both partners of 223 couples, who had striven for having a child unsuccessfully, underwent history taking, physical examination, laboratory and immuno-serologic tests including anti-tissue-transglutaminase antibody (antitTG), as well as deep duodenal biopsy in antibody-carrying patients. RESULTS: Antibodies against tissue transglutaminase were positive in 6/223 female patients of whom the diagnosis of celiac disease was histologically confirmed in 3/223 cases (1.34%). Of the male patients 2/223 (0.9%) have proven to be carriers of the antibody;histology was pathognomonic in both of them. Curiously, one of the male patients with celiac disease has been the partner of a woman who also had celiac disease diagnosed by the authors. In the followup period, a female patient and the female member of the couple with celiac disease gave birth to healthy newborns after spontaneous conception, as the result of a strictly kept gluten-free diet, as well as occasional treatments of acetylsalicylate for antiphos-pholipid syndrome or levothyroxine for latent hypothyroidism due to autoimmune thyroiditis. CONCLUSION: The results underline that it is worth performing a screening for celiac disease in both partners of couples assessed due to the lack of success in having a child, as infertility can be ceased by an appropriate diet.

Mapping the geography of editors-in-chief

High plasma CD40 ligand level is associated with more advanced stages and worse prognosis in colorectal cancer

Long noncoding RNA-mediated activation of androgen receptor in prostate cancer

Remarkable progress has been made in molecular characterization of prostate cancer （PCa） with continued innovations in high throughput technologies evaluating human cancer？-3 Since the completion of the Human Genome Project it has been estimated that only about 1.5%-2% of our genome codes for proteins. Various genome-wide approaches, e.g. the ENCODE project, revealed that a much larger percent of the genome is transcribed as non-protein coding （nc） RNA, including long noncoding （lnc） RNA （over 200bps long）. Although the biological roles of IncRNA （the ＇dark matter of the genome＇） are not nearly as well-understood as the protein coding mRNAs, it is increasingly clear that they play important roles in almost every aspects of biology, including cancer biology.4＇5 This is exemplified by recent genome-wide association studies revealing that over 80% of cancer-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） are in noncoding regions of the genome.

Eosinophilic colitis (EC) is a rare form of primary eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease with a bimodal peak of prevalence in neonates and young adults. EC remains a little understood condition in contrast to the increasingly recognized eosinophilic esophagitis. Clinical presentation of EC is highly variable according to mucosal, transmural, or serosal predominance of inflammation. EC has a broad differential diagnosis because colon tissue eosinophilia often occurs in parasitic infection, drug-induced allergic reactions, inflammatory bowel disease, and various connective tissue disorders, which require thorough searching for secondary causes that may be specifically treated with antibiotics or dietary and drug elimination. Like eosinophilic gastrointestinal disease involving other segments of the gastrointestinal tract, EC responds very well to steroids that may be spared by using antihistamines, leukotriene inhibitors and biologics.

Optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses has emerged as the dominant technique for generating single-and few-cycle terahertz(THz)*** advent of the tilted pulse front pumping(TPFP)velocity matching technique,proposed and implemented two decades ago,has ushered in significant advancements of these THz sources,which are pivotal in the realm of THz pump-probe and material control experiments,which need THz pulses with microjoule energies and several hundred kV/cm electric field ***,these THz sources are poised to play a crucial role in the realization of THz-driven particle accelerators,necessitating millijoule-level pulses with tens of MV/cm electric field *** has enabled the efficient velocity matching in lithium niobate crystals renowned for their extraordinary high nonlinear ***,its adaptation to semiconductor THz sources has resulted in a two-hundred-times enhancement in conversion *** this comprehensive review,we present the seminal achievements of the past two *** expound on the conventional TPFP setup,delineate its scaling limits,and elucidate the novel generation TPFP configurations proposed to surmount these constraints,accompanied by their preliminary ***,we provide an in-depth analysis of the THz absorption,refractive index,and nonlinear coefficient spectra of lithium niobate and widely used semiconductors employed as THz generators,which dictate their suitability as THz *** underscore the far-reaching advantages of tilted pulse front pumping,not only for LN and semiconductor-based THz sources but also for selected organic crystal-based sources and Yb-laserpumped GaP sources,previously regarded as velocity-matched in the literature.

Prostate cancer （CAP） is the second most frequently diagnosed cancer of men worldwide （899 000 new cases, 13.6% of the total）, with nearly 75% of the registered cases occurring in developed countries （644 000 cases）.1 blood prostate-specific antigen test has revolutionized the early detection of CaP and organ-confined CaP is effectively managed by state-of-the-art treatments including radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy.2 In the past decade, tremendous progress has also been made in our understanding of the biology and common genomic alterations in CaP.3＇4 New molecular marker assays have promise in improving CaP diagnosis.5-8 Despite these advances, major challenges remain with our ability to distinguish indolent cancers from the more aggressive cancers detected early due to widely used prostate-specific antigen test. Furthermore, development of molecular stratification of CaP for targeted and more effective therapies is critically needed.

Characterization of Gradual Porous Ceramic Structures Obtained by Powder Sedimentation

Asymmetric membranes present better separation and service characteristics than the symmetric ones. In our preliminary studies the possibility of obtaining sintered porous materials with gradual structure by sedimentation of metallic and ceramic powders was demonstrated. Zirconium silicate （ZrSiO4） particles were used for the manufacturing of the porous supports, and mullite powder was deposited by sedimentation in order to achieve the active layer with pores size gradient. The used powders and the obtained structures were characterized by laser scattering particle size analyzer, scanning electron microscopy and mercury porosimetry. The permeability and the filtration fineness of the structures were also determined. by using a thin active layer made of small particles deposited onto a macro-porous support, one can achieve membranes with high flow rates and filtration fineness in the microfiltration area.
