Mucosal healing effect of mesalazine granules in naproxen-induced small bowel enteropathy

AIM:To investigate the effect of mesalazine granules on small intestinal injury induced by naproxen using capsule endoscopy (CE).METHODS:This was a single center,non-randomized,open-label,uncontrolled pilot study,using the PillCam SB CE system with RAPID 5 *** Lewis Index Score (LIS) for small bowel injury was investigated to evaluate the severity of mucosal *** patients with at least one month history of daily naproxen use of 1000 mg and proton pump inhibitor co-therapy were *** with a minimum LIS of 135 were eligible to enter the 4-wk treatment phase of the *** this treatment period,3 × 1000 mg/d mesalazine granules were added to ongoing therapies of 1000 mg/d naproxen and 20 mg/d *** the end of the 4-wk combined treatment period,a second small bowel CE was performed to re-evaluate the enteropathy according to the LIS *** primary objective of this study was to assess the mucosal changes after 4 wk of mesalazine ***:A total of 18 patients (16 females),ranging in age from 46 to 78 years (mean age 60.3 years) were screened,all had been taking 1000 mg/d naproxen for at least one *** patients were excluded from the mesalazine therapeutic phase of the study for the following reasons:the screening CE showed normal small bowel mucosa or only insignificant damages (LIS < 135) in five patients,the screening esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed gastric ulcer in one patient,capsule technical failure and incomplete CE due to poor small bowel cleanliness in two *** patients (9 female,mean age 56.2 years) whose initial LIS reached mild and moderate-to-severe enteropathy grades (between 135 and 790 and ≥ 790) entered the 4-wk therapeutic phase and a repeat CE was *** comparing the change in LIS from baseline to end of treatment in all patients,a marked decrease was seen (mean LIS:1236.4 ± 821.9 vs 925.2 ± 543.4,P=0.271).Moreover,a significant difference between pre-and post-t

Mapping the geography of editors-in-chief

Management of Vulnating Esophageal Foreign Bodies in Burkina Faso

Introduction: Esophageal foreign bodies (EFB) are a diagnostic and therapeutic emergency because of the serious complications they can cause. Aim: This paper aimed to study the vulnating esophageal foreign bodies in the ENT and Head and Neck Surgery departments of the Yalgado Ouedraogo and Bogodogo University Hospital. Methodology: This was an analytic cross-sectional study with retrospective data collection over 10 years (2012-2021). Results: We collected 91 cases of vulnating esophageal foreign bodies, i.e. 9.1 cases/year (4.7%). The mean age of the patients was 14 ± 19 years. The sex ratio was 1.6. The circumstances of occurrence were dominated by accidental ingestion of vulnating esophageal foreign bodies (98.9%). The average time to consultation was 7.5 hours. Dysphagia was the dominant symptom (64.8%). Cervico-thoracic radiography found dual contour radiopaque images in 71.4%. Esophagoscopy with rigid tube was performed in 97.8%. The average time for extraction of the vulnating esophageal foreign bodies was 8 hours. Vulnerating esophageal foreign bodies were non-organic in 84.6%. The button cell represented 64.8%. Their location was cervical in 61.5% intraoperatively. The lesion assessment found ulcerative lesions in 42.9% (p Conclusion: Vulnating esophageal foreign bodies are relatively frequent in our ENT practice. Although their diagnosis is often easy, their treatment is still difficult and requires multidisciplinary management. Thus, for us, prevention remains the first effective weapon.

Vibrational Spectrum and Luminescence Properties of CaAl₂B₂O₇∶Eu³⁺

The vibrational spectrum of the CaAl2B2O7 was investigated. It was shown that the vibrations of the BO3 groups are present in the region of 1400600 cm-1, and the bands at 519 nm-1 may originate from the AlO6 vibration. The luminescence properties of Eu3+ in CaAl2B2O7 were investigated. It was found that the Eu3+ ion in CaAl2B2O7 occupies two different sites. Investigation on the phonon sideband of Eu3+ indicates that BO3 groups are present in the surroundings of Eu3+ ions.

An intercontinental comparison of insect seed predation between introduced and native oaks

Novel interactions between introduced oaks and their natural enemies across different continents provide an opportunity to test the enemy release hypothesis(ERH)at local and global *** on the ERH,we assessed the impacts of native seed-feeding insects on introduced and native oaks within and among *** combined a common-garden experiment in China and biogeographic literature surveys to measure seed predation by insects and the proportion of acorn embryos surviving after insect infestation among 4 oak species with different geographical origins:Quercus mongolica origin from China,*** and *** from Europe,and *** from North *** supporting the ERH,oaks in introduced continents escaped seed predation compared to those in native continents and compared to other native oaks in introduced ***-garden comparisons showed that total acorn infestation rate of introduced ***(section Lobatae)was considerably lower than that of native oaks(section Quercus)in China and Europe,likely because of the differences in seed traits associated with different oak *** surveys showed that seed predation of introduced oaks was lower in the introduced continent than in the native *** survival was higher in introduced *** than native oaks in China and ***,insect seed predation of recently introduced *** in China was similar to that in Europe,which is not consistent with the *** results suggest that reduced acorn attack by native insects and higher embryo survival after acorn damage could increase the establishment success or invasion risk of introduced oaks in non-native continents.
