The pistil, the female reproductive organ of plants, is a key player in the success of sexual plant reproduction. Ultimately, the production of fruits and seeds depends on the proper pistil development and function. Therefore, the identification and characterization of pistil expressed genes is essential for a better understanding and manipulation of the plant reproduction process. For studying the function of pistil expressed genes, transgenic and/or mutant plants for the genes of interest are used. The present article provides a review of methods already exploited to analyze sexual reproductive success. We intend to supply useful information and to guide future experiments in the study of genes affecting pistil development and function.

The expansion of Brazilian agriculture:Soil erosion scenarios

During the next 10 years Brazil's agricultural area will expand to meet increased domestic and worldwide demand for food,fuel,and *** choices regarding land use will determine to what degree this expansion will have adverse effects that include soil erosion,reservoir siltation,water quality problems,loss of biodiversity and social conflict,especially around indigenous *** paper presents an up-to-date inventory of soil erosion in Brazil caused by crop and livestock activities and provides estimates based on three different hypothetical land-use scenarios to accommodate the expansion of Brazilian agricultural activity by 2020:Scenario 1-expansion of cropping into areas of natural vegetation,without adoption of conservation practices;Scenario 2-expansion of cropping into areas of degraded pasture,without adoption of conservation practices;Scenario 3-expansion of cropping into areas of degraded pasture,together with conservation practices in 100%of the expanded *** worst-case scenario involves expansion of agriculture into areas of native vegetation in the Brazilian Savannah(Cerrado)and Brazilian rainforest(Amazon)biomes,and could increase total soil erosion in Brazil(currently about 800 million metric tons a year)by as much as 20%.In the best-case scenar-io,crop expansion under a conservation agriculture model would utilize currently degraded pasture,especially in the Savannah(circa 40 million hectares),reducing soil erosion in Brazil by around 20%.For this to occur,however,a national soil and water conservation policy needs to be implemented in Brazil to support a sustainable model of agriculture in which the environment can be preserved as much as possible.

Enviromics refers to the characterization of micro-and macroenvironments based on large-scale environmental *** providing genotypic recommendations with predictive extrapolation at a site-specific level,enviromics could inform plant breeding decisions across varying conditions and anticipate productivity in a changing ***-based integration of statistics,envirotyping(i.e.,determining environmental factors),and remote sensing could help unravel the complex interplay of genetics,environment,and *** support this goal,exhaustive envirotyping to generate precise environmental profiles would significantly improve predictions of genotype performance and genetic gain in ***,informatics management platforms aggregate diverse environmental datasets obtained using optical,thermal,radar,and light detection and ranging(LiDAR)sensors that capture detailed information about vegetation,surface structure,and *** wealth of information,coupled with freely available climate data,fuels innovative enviromics *** enviromics holds immense potential for breeding,a few obstacles remain,such as the need for(1)integrative methodologies to systematically collect field data to scale and expand observations across the landscape with satellite data;(2)state-of-the-art AI models for data integration,simulation,and prediction;(3)cyberinfrastructure for processing big data across scales and providing seamless interfaces to deliver forecasts to stakeholders;and(4)collaboration and data sharing among farmers,breeders,physiologists,geoinformatics experts,and programmers across research *** these challenges is essential for leveraging the full potential of big data captured by satellites to transform 21st century agriculture and crop improvement through enviromics.

Testing the effectiveness of conservation management within biosphere reserves:the case of the Mexican deer mouse(Peromyscus mexicanus)as a bioindicator

Biosphere reserves are protected areas whose purpose is to combine conservation and sustainable ***,their effectiveness has not been tested sufficiently,especially from an ecological and genetic ap*** this sense,the Peromyscus genus represents an excellent bioindicator to address these questions,due to its short life and high evolutionary rate and *** conservation managers,genetic structure can increase the rate of loss of genetic diversity because alleles exclusive of a subpopulation are more likely to disappear as a consequence of genetic drift in comparison with a panmictic *** we analyzed the abundance,movement distances,morphology/morphometry and genetic structure of 3 populations of Mexican deer mouse(Peromyscus mexicanus)located in different protected zones of La Tigra National Park(honduras).Our results are consistent among the 3 approaches and showed the highest values of abundance,morphometry and genetic diversity in the population located at the core zone,whereas non-statistically significant differences were found between buffer and transition zone populations,suggesting suitable effectiveness of conservation management in the core zone but a lack of ecological buffering function of the other *** addition,the low movement distances and high genetic structure among the studied populations provide evidence of poor conservation management in the buffer and transition ***,we discuss the utility of the novel methodology used in this work,combining morphometry,abundance and genetics,in testing the effectiveness of conservation strategies in biosphere reserves,and the value of the Peromyscus genus as a bioindicator.

Non-phospholipid liposomes with high sterol content display a very limited permeability

We demonstrate that it is possible to form non-phospholipid fluid bilayers in aqueous milieu with a mixture of palmitic acid (PA),cholesterol (Chol),and cholesterol sulfate (Schol) in a molar proportion of 30/28/*** self-assemblies are shown to be bilayers in the liquid ordered *** are stable between ph 5 and *** this ph range,the protonation/deprotonation of PA carboxylic group is observed but this change does not appear to alter the stability of these bilayers,a behavior contrasting with that observed for binary mixtures of PA/Chol,and PA/*** multilamellar dispersions formed spontaneously from the PA/Chol/Schol mixture could be successfully extruded to form Large Unilamellar Vesicles (LUVs).These LUVs show interesting permeability properties,linked with their high sterol *** non-phospholipid liposomes can sustain a ph gradient (ph internal 8/ph external 6) 100 times longer than LUVs made of 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) and cholesterol,with a molar ratio of 60/***,the non-phospholipid LUVs are shown to protect ascorbic acid from an oxidizing environment (1 mM iron(III)).Once entrapped in liposomes,ascorbic acid displays a degradation rate similar to that obtained in the absence of iron(III).These results show the possibility to form novel nanocontainers from a mixture of a monoalkylated amphiphile and sterols,with a good ph stability and showing interesting permeability properties.

Failure to Rescue as a Quality Metric in Congenital heart Surgeries in a high-Complexity Service Provider Institution Located in a Middle-Income Country

Background:Failure to rescue has been an effective quality metric in congenital heart ***,mor-bidity and mortality depend greatly on non-modifiable individual factors and have a weak correlation with better-quality *** aim to measure the complications,mortality,and risk factors in pediatric patients undergoing congenital heart surgery in a high-complexity institution located in a middle-income country and compare it with other institutions that have conducted a similar ***:A retrospective observational study was conducted in a high-complexity service provider institution,in Cali,*** pediatric patients undergoing any congenital heart surgery between 2019 and 2022 were *** main outcomes evaluated in the study were complication,mortality,and failure to rescue *** and multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed with mortality as the outcome ***:We evaluated 308 congenital heart *** the outcomes,201(65%)complications occurred,23(7.5%)patients died,and the FTR of the entire cohort was 11.4%.The presence of a postoperative complication(OR 14.88,CI 3.06–268.37,p=0.009),age(OR 0.79,CI 0.57–0.96,p=0.068),and urgent/emergent surgery(OR 8.14,CI 2.97–28.66,phe most significant variables in predicting ***:Failure to rescue is an effective and comparable quality measure in healthcare institutions and is the major contributor to postoperative mortality in congenital heart *** our higher mortality and complication rate,we obtained a comparable failure to rescue rate to high-income countries’health institutions.

Evaluation of biostimulation and Tween 80 addition for the bioremediation of long-term DDT-contaminated soil

The bioremediation of a long-term contaminated soil through biostimulation and surfactant addition was evaluated. The concentrations of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis（4-chlorophenyl）ethane（DDT） and its metabolites 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis（4-chlorophenyl） ethane（DDD） and1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis（4-chlorophenyl） ethylene（DDE） were monitored during an 8-week remediation process. Physicochemical characterization of the treated soil was performed before and after the bioremediation process. The isolation and identification of predominant microorganisms during the remediation process were also carried out. The efficiency of detoxification was evaluated after each bioremediation protocol. humidity and p h and the heterotrophic microorganism count were monitored weekly. The DDT concentration was reduced by 79% after 8 weeks via biostimulation with surfactant addition（B ＋ S） and 94.3%via biostimulation alone（B）. Likewise, the concentrations of the metabolites DDE and DDD were reduced to levels below the quantification limits. The microorganisms isolated during bioremediation were identified as Bacillus thuringiensis, Flavobacterium sp., Cuprivadius sp.,Variovorax soli, Phenylobacterium sp. and Lysobacter sp., among others. Analysis with scanning electron microscopy（SEM） allowed visualization of the colonization patterns of soil particles. The toxicity of the soil before and after bioremediation was evaluated using Vibrio fischeri as a bioluminescent sensor. A decrease in the toxic potential of the soil was verified by the increase of the concentration/effect relationship EC50 to 26.9% and 27.2% for B ＋ S and B, respectively, compared to 0.4% obtained for the soil before treatment and 2.5%by natural attenuation after 8 weeks of treatment.

Effect of varying hydrothermal temperature,time,and sludge ph on sludge solubilisation

In recent years,hydrothermal treatment has been considered as among the most promising option for sludge solubilisation and carbon recovery in terms of sludge *** this study,the effect of different individual hydrothermal operating conditions like temperature(110-250℃),sludge ph(6-13)and reaction time(0.5-3 h)were varied to understand their influence on sludge *** most effective hydrothermal conditions(severity factor of 9.7)were found to be at 200℃,sludge ph of 12 and reaction time of 1 h which solubilised about 1743 mg/g and 131 mg/g of COD and carbohydrates respectively into the aqueous ***,gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)analysis was done that identified the organic compounds in the treated liquid phase to be mainly carboxylic acids,phenols,esters,and their *** further studies are required to efficiently separate and recover the different organic compounds present,this work provides more insights for future valorisation of the organic rich hydrothermally treated liquid phase.

Fast preparation route to high-performances textured Sr-doped Ca_3Co_4O_9 thermoelectric materials through precursor powder modification

This work presents a short and very efficient method to produce high performance textured Ca_3Co_4O_9 thermoelectric materials through initial powders modification. Microstructure has shown good grain orientation, and low porosity while slightly lower grain sizes were obtained in samples prepared from attrition milled powders. All samples show the high density of around 96% of the theoretical *** similar characteristics are reflected in, approximately,the same electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient values for both types of samples. however, in spite of similar power factor(PF) at low temperatures, it is slightly higher at high temperature for the attrition milled samples. On the other hand, the processing time reduction(from 38 to 2 h) when using attrition milled precursors, leads to lower mechanical properties in these samples. All these data clearly point out to the similar characteristics of both kinds of samples, with a drastic processing time decrease when using attrition milled precursors, which is of the main economic importance when considering their industrial production.
