Strong acceptor-weak acceptor system FN-TPy has been designed and synthesized,which undergoes solvent dependent self-assembly in mixed aqueous media to generate through space intermolecular charge transfer *** as-prepared entropically favoured assemblies of FN-TPy exhibit excellent photostability and photosensitizing properties in the assembled state to activate aerial oxygen for efficient generation of reactive oxygen species through Type-I and Type-II *** FN-TPy exhibits excellent potential for regulated oxidation of alcohols and aldehydes under mild reaction conditions(visible light irradiation,aqueous media,room temperature)using aerial oxygen as the‘oxidant’.The present study demonstrates the potential of FN-TPy assemblies to catalyse controlled oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzoic acid.

Salmonella infection, ranging from mild, self-limiting diarrhea to severe gastrointestinal, septicemic disease and enteric fever, is a global health problem both in humans and animals. Rapid development of microbial drug resistance has led to a need for efficacious and affordable vaccines against Salmonella. Microbial heat shock proteins （HSPs）, including HSP60 and HSP70, are the dominant antigens that promote the host immune response. Co-administration of these antigens with cytokines, such as IL-22, which plays an important role in antimicrobial defense, can enhance the immune response and protection against pathogens. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine the immunogenicity of rGroEL （Hsp60） of S. Typhi, alone or administered in combination with murine rlL-22, and its protective efficacy against lethal infection with Salmonella, in mice. There was appreciable stimulation of the humoral and cell-mediated immune responses in mice immunized with rGroEL alone. However, co-administration of rGroEL with rlL-22 further boosted the antibody titers （IgG, IgG1 and IgG2a）, T-cell proliferative responses and the secretion of both Thl and Th2 cytokines. Additionally, rGroEL alone accorded 65%-70% protection against lethal challenge with S. Typhi and S. Typhimurium, which increased to 90% when co-administered with rlL-22.

Highly transparent and conducting Al-doped Zn O(Al:Zn O) thin films were grown on glass substrates using pulsed laser deposition *** profound effect of film thickness on the structural, optical and electrical properties of Al:Zn O thin films was observed. The X-ray diffraction depicts c-axis, plane(002) oriented thin films with hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure. Al-doping in Zn O introduces a compressive stress in the films which increase with the film thickness. AFM images reveal the columnar grain formation with low surface roughness. The versatile optical properties of Al:Zn O thin films are important for applications such as transparent electromagnetic interference(EMI) shielding materials and solar cells. The obtained optical band gap(3.2–3.08 e V) was found to be less than pure Zn O(3.37 e V) films. The lowering in the band gap in Al:Zn O thin films could be attributed to band edge bending phenomena. The photoluminescence spectra gives sharp visible emission peaks, enables Al:Zn O thin films for light emitting devices(LEDs) applications. The current–voltage(I–V) measurements show the ohmic behavior of the films with resistivity(ρ) 10-3Ω cm.

Co-administration of rlpaB domain of Shigella with rGroEL of s. Typhi enhances the immune responses and protective efficacy against Shigella infection

Shigella species cause severe bacillary dysentery in humans and are associated with high morbidity and mortality. The Invasion plasmid antigen （IpaB） protein, which is conserved across all Shigella spp., induces macrophage cell death and is required to invade host cells. The present study evaluates the immunogenicity and protective efficacy of the recombinant （r） domain region of IpaB （rlpaB） of S. flexneri, rlpaB was administered either alone or was co-administered with the rGroEL （heat shock protein 60） protein from S. Typhi as an adjuvant in a mouse model of intranasal immunization. The IpaB domain region （37 kDa） of S. flexneriwas amplified from an invasion plasmid, cloned, expressed in BL21 Escherichia colicells and purified. Immunization with the rlpaB domain alone stimulated both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. Furthermore, robust antibody （IgG, IgA） and T-cell responses were induced when the rlpaB domain was co-administered with rGroEL. Antibody isotyping revealed higher IgG 1 and IgG2a antibody titers and increased interferon-gamma （IFN-γ） secretion in the co-administered group. Immunization of mice with the rlpaB domain alone protected 60%-70% of the mice from lethal infection by S. flexneri, S. boydiiand S. sonnei, whereas co-administration with rGroEL increased the protective efficacy to 80%-85%. Organ burden and histopathological studies also revealed a significant reduction in lung infection in the co-immunized mice compared with mice immunized with the rlpaB domain alone. This study emphasizes that the co-administration of the rlpaB domain and rGroEL protein improves immune responses in mice and increases protective efficacy against Shigella infection. This is also the first report to evaluate the potential of the GroEL （Hsp 60） protein of S. Typhi as an adjuvant molecule, thereby overcoming the need for commercial adjuvants.

Age related changes in body composition are associated with long term dietary intake profiles. Age related increase in body fat is primarily attributed to decline in physical activity and basal metabolic rate as well as dietary intake. The study was designed to assess the body composition, dietary intake and physical activity level of sedentary adult women of different age groups. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 152 sedentary adult women comprised of students and faculty from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The relationship of body composition with dietary factors and physical activity level of women in four age groups i.e. 21 - 30, 31 - 40, 41 - 50 and 51 - 60 years was determined. A gradual increase (p ≤ 0.05) in anthropometric and body composition parameters such as weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, body mass index, fat mass and visceral fat rating was observed with the advancement of age. The lean body mass was decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) as the age progressed, the values for four age groups being 74.9, 68.9, 62.8 and 60.9%, respectively. Contrary to this fat mass increased with age, the corresponding values for four age groups being 15.7, 21.4, 26.6 and 29.2 kg, respectively. The percent adequacy of protein by four age groups was 69.6, 78.2, 80.0 and 66.3, respectively when compared to RDA while fat intake was much higher i.e. 245.5, 271.8, 288.4 and 250.8%, respectively. The energy intake was inadequate among all age groups, however, a significant (p ≤ 0.05) differ- ence was observed in daily energy consumption between the age groups. The mean physical activity level (PAL) of the subjects ranged between 1.49 - 1.60. The physical activity level values showed that majority of the subjects (87% - 94%) were having sedentary life style. Age is a crucial factor associated with body composition. The aim of the study was to assess the impact of nutrition counselling on food intake and anthropometric measurements in postmenopausal women. Sixty postmenopausal women were selected from two villages of Sangrur district and were divided into two groups—Group I (Control) and Group II (Experimental) containing 30 subjects each. Subjects of Group II were imparted nutrition counselling (NC) regarding benefits of Aloe vera and its use in diet in individual and group contacts once in a week, for a period of three months. Aloe vera plants were also distributed to be used in their diets. Dietary intake of subjects for 3 consecutive days by 24 hr recall method was recorded before and after nutrition counselling. The average daily nutrient intake of diets was calculated by using Diet Cal. Anthropometric parameters were calculated before and after counselling. Dietary survey revealed that intake of cereals, fats/oil and sugar/jaggery decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) whereas intake of green leafy vegetable, other vegetables and fruits increase significantly (p ≤ 0.01) after counselling. A significant decrease in energy, carbohydrate, fat and significant increase intake in iron, calcium, potassium, Vitamin C and β-carotene content was observed. A significant reduction was observed for weight, body mass index (BMI), mid upper arm circumference (MUAC), triceps skinfold thickness (TSFT) and waist hip ratio (WHR) by 4.9%, 3.98%, 2.9% and 2.17% respectively, while random blood sugar (RBS), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) decreased by 25.21%, 13.74% and 8.03% after counselling. After nutrition counselling subjects adopted good nutritional practices and use of Aloe vera leaves in diets which improved their health status of postmenopausal women.

Prevalence and Antibiotic Resistance Pattern among the Mastitis Causing Microorganisms

Mastitis is one of the most commonly occurring diseases of dairy animals. It is the most important cause of economic losses to the dairy industry in India and throughout the world. In the present study prevalence of microorganisms isolated from mastitic milk and their antibiotic resistance was studied. A total of sixty nine milk samples from mastitic animals (clinical and subclinical) were tested using sodium lauryl sulphate test and those positive were selected and transported to the laboratory for isolation and identification of the causative agent. Out of these samples fifty samples yielded bacterial growth when tested on selective/non selective medium. Of these fifty samples, seven samples had single bacterial growth whereas rest of the 43 samples had mixed growth. Among the bacterial isolates it was found that the highest prevalence was of Streptococcus agalactiae and Staphylococcus aureus followed by E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Antibiotic sensitivity test revealed that Streptococcus agalactiae revealed the highest sensitivity to ofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and resistance to amoxicillin and doxycycline;Staphylococcus aureus revealed the highest sensitivity to ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, azithromycin and sparfloxacin and resistance to amoxycillin and gentamicin. Similarly, E. coli revealed the highest sensitivity to azithromycin and chloramphenicol and resistance to amoxicillin and teicoplanin, and Klebsiella pneumoniae revealed highest sensitivity to azithromycin, gentamicin and resistance to amoxicillin, teicoplanin and erythromycin. Thus, from the present study it could be concluded that Streptococcus agalactiae, Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the most frequently isolated organisms from mastitic animals and azithromycin and the third generation fluoroquinolones (ciprofloxacin, sparfloxacin and ofloxacin) were the most sensitive drugs.

This study examines the construct validity and reliability of the Malay language questionnaire for urinary incontinence diagnosis (QUID) in women. Study Design: Random sampling design was used in this cross-sectional survey. Materials and Methods: The Americanized English language questionnaire was translated to the Malay language and distributed to community-dwelling Malaysian women living in various locations in Selangor. The construct validity was tested using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) followed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The reliability was determined using Cronbach’s α. Results: A total of 111 women completed the Malay language QUID in this pilot study. The Keiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling adequacy of 0.675 and Bartlett’s test of sphericity (χ2 = 284.633, df = 15, p = 0.001) indicated that the EFA was possible. The total variance and the scree plot identified two factors above the initial eigenvalue of 1 while a third factor was just below it (0.758). The CFA output showed a recursive model with the solution being not admissible because two unobserved and exogenous variables had negative variance estimates. The following values of absolute fit indices showed an acceptable level of fit: 1) Chi-square test with χ2 = 4.997, df = 5, p = 0.416, indicated a smaller difference between the expected and observed covariance matrices;2) GFI = 0.986, AGFI = 0.939, RMR = 0.021 and CMIN/DF = 1.0 indicated acceptable level of fit;3) The baseline comparison values of NFI = 0.983 and CFI = 1.0 also indicated a good fit to the data;4) RMSEA = 0.000 was considered a perfect fit indicating that the hypothesized model was a good fit to the observed data. Under the hypothesis of “close fit”, the probability of getting a sample RMSEA as large as 0.000 was 0.567. The Cronbach’s α coefficient of 0.823 indicated good reliability.
