Total resection of glioblastoma (GB) tumors is nearly impossible, and systemic administration of temozolomide (TMZ) is often inadequate. This study presents a hybrid layered composite nanofiber mesh (LHN) designed for localized treatment in GB tumor bed. The LHN, consisting of polyvinyl alcohol and core-shell polylactic acid layers, was loaded with TMZ and rutin. In vitro analysis revealed that LHNTMZ and LHNrutin decelerated epithelial-mesenchymal transition and growth of stem-like cells, while the combination, LHNTMZ+rutin, significantly reduced sphere size compared to untreated and LHNTMZ-treated cells (P < 0.0001). In an orthotopic C6-induced GB rat model, LHNTMZ+rutin therapy demonstrated a more pronounced tumor-reducing effect than LHNTMZ alone. Tumor volume, assessed by magnetic resonance imaging, was significantly reduced in LHNTMZ+rutin-treated rats compared to untreated controls. Structural changes in tumor mitochondria, reduced membrane potential, and decreased PARP expression indicated the activation of apoptotic pathways in tumor cells, which was further confirmed by a reduction in PHH3, indicating decreased mitotic activity of tumor cells. Additionally, the local application of LHNs in the GB model mitigated aggressive tumor features without causing local tissue inflammation or adverse systemic effects. This was evidenced by a decrease in the angiogenesis marker CD31, the absence of inflammation or necrosis in H&E staining of the cerebellum, increased production of IFN-gamma, decreased levels of interleukin-4 in splenic T cells, and lower serum AST levels. Our findings collectively indicate that LHNTMZ+rutin is a promising biocompatible model for the local treatment of GB. (c) 2024 Shenyang Pharmaceutical University. Published by Elsevier B.V. Generalized Weighted Morrey Estimates for Marcinkiewicz Integrals with Rough Kernel Associated with Schrodinger Operator and Their Commutators

Let L =-△+V(x) be a Schrodinger operator, where △ is the Laplacian on R^n,while nonnegative potential V(x) belonging to the reverse Holder class. The aim of this paper is to give generalized weighted Morrey estimates for the boundedness of Marcinkiewicz integrals with rough kernel associated with Schrodinger operator and their ***, the boundedness of the commutator operators formed by BMO functions and Marcinkiewicz integrals with rough kernel associated with Schrodinger operators is discussed on the generalized weighted Morrey spaces. As its special cases, the corresponding results of Marcinkiewicz integrals with rough kernel associated with Schrodinger operator and their commutators have been deduced, respectively. Also, Marcinkiewicz integral operators, rough Hardy-Littlewood(H-L for short) maximal operators, Bochner-Riesz means and parametric Marcinkiewicz integral operators which satisfy the conditions of our main results can be considered as some examples.

Choroidal neovascularization and angioid streaks in pseudoxanthoma elasticum

AIM: To report a case of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) in a 48 year old woman that presented with bilateral blurry vision. METHODS: A case report RESULTS: A 48-year-old woman presented with bilateral blurry vision and right eye metamorphopsia. The patient had a history of angioid streaks in the left eye ten years ago for which she had received laser surgery and had poor residual vision. Visual acuity was 20/60 in the right eye and count fingers at 6 feet in the left. Fundus examination showed subretinal hemorrhage and macular thickening on the right and a disciform macular scar with focal atrophic pigment epithelial lesions on the left. Both eyes had angioid streaks and peau d’orange pigmentary pattern of the retina. External examination showed several, yellow skin papules and plaques on the lateral and posterior neck, as well as prominent mental creases. Pathologic examination of skin biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of PXE, showing calcium deposition and fragmented, clumped elastic fibers in the deep reticular dermis. She responded well to intravitreal bevacizumab injections and visual acuity improved to 20/25 OD. Preventative care was emphasized and the patient was referred to cardiology, gastroenterology and human genetics for counseling. CONCLUSION: PXE is a multisystem disorder affecting the dermatologic, ocular, and cardiovascular systems. Ophthalmic findings of angioid streaks and choroidal neovascularization in the presence of stereotypical skin changes and prominent mental creases should prompt evaluation for PXE.

Spectral Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Some Schiff Bases Derived from 4-Methyl-2-aminophenol

A series of N-（5-methyl-2-hydroxyphenyl）-（2/3/4/5-substituted）-benzaldimines （I--XlII） were synthesized us- ing appropriate synthetic route. Their structures were characterized by FT-IR, UV-Visible, ESI-MS, 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopic techniques and analytical methods. The crystal structure of N-（5-methyl-2-hydroxyphenyl）- 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldimine （XIII） was determined by X-ray diffraction at room temperature. Relationship between the melting points and the structures of the compounds were examined. Antibacterial activities of the compounds were evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumo- niae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Proteus mirabilis. Antifungal activities were reported for Candida albieans. Some of the Schiffbases showed considerable antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and C. albicans.

Nickel-Ti O_2 hybrid catalysts are synthesized by electrodeposition and their catalytic activity with respect to the hydrogen evolution reaction is *** types of titanium oxide particles,which are commercial particles of dense Ti O_2 and mesoporous TiO_2 particles synthesized by an aerosol method,are incorporated into the matrix of the nickel *** nickel catalysts containing Ti O_2 particles presented higher catalytic activity than the conventional nickel Watts *** TiO_2-modified nickel catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity towards HER in alkaline *** addition,this type of nickel catalyst increases its catalytic activity after ageing treatment,which is an indication of an increase in the electro-active area of the electrode.

Antimicrobial activity of the compounds was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis. Antifungal activities were reported for Candida albicans. Schiff bases showed considerable antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S, epidermidis and C. albicans. N-（5-Chloro-2-hydroxyphenyl）-3-hydroxy-salieylaldimine （II） has the broadest and highest antimicrobial activity according to the others.

Macrobioerosion and Microbioerosion in Marine Molluscan Shells from Holocene and Modern Beaches (39°-40°S, South of Buenos Aires Province, Argentina)

The marine sediments of the area of Verde Peninsula - Jabali Island （39°28＇S/62°19%V-40°28＇ S/62°11＇W） Holocene in age （3-2 ky）, and modern beaches contain a significant amount of bioeroded mollusc shells. Fifteen sites were analyzed, in which 20.11% of the mollusc shells （2168 valves） presented bioerosion traces, in 54 species （30 bivalves and 24 gastropods）. Fourteen ichnogenera were reported： Entobia, Maeandropolydora, Iramena, Caulostrepsis, Pennatichnus, Pinaceocladichnus, Trypanites, and Gastrochaenolites （Domichnia）, Gnathichnus and Radulichnus （Pascichnia）, Finichnus and Centrichnus （Fixichnia）, Oichnus （Praedicnia）（macrobioerosion）, y Semidendrina （microbioerosion）, the latter is first reported in mollusc shells in Argentina. Eleven ichnospecies were identified Finichnus peristroma, Maeandropolydora sulcans, Gnathichnus pentax, Pinaceocladichnus onubensis, Caulostrepsis taeniola, Centrichnus eccentricus, Radulichnus inopinatus, Oichnus simplex, Oichnus paraboloides, Oichnus gradatus, and Gastrochaenolites torpedo （lithic remains）. The dominant ichnogenera in the Holocene deposits are Iramena, Entobia and Oichnus. The same ichnogenera are constant with different abundance in the modern beaches, and increasing representation of Pinaceocladichnus and Pennatichnus. The dominant ichnofacies in the Holocene deposits is Trypanites, revealing a benthonic marine community composed of cheilostome bryzoans, clionaid sponges, predator gastropods, regular echinoids, polychaete annelids, bivalves, thallophytas and fungi. Generally, the area was described as a sublittoral, low-energy, stable environment with high rate of oxygenation, and sandy bottoms, with rocky bottoms at Villalonga locality.

Medical management of metabolic and cardiovascular complications after liver transplantation

Effect of acupuncture therapy on fracture healing in rats with femur fractures

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of acupuncture therapy on fracture healing in rats with femur ***: A total of 10 groups were formed;control group, groups sacrificed on 7 th, 14 th, and 21 st days of fracture formation, groups to which acupuncture was applied for 7, 14, and 21 d, groups to which fracture and acupuncture were applied for 7,14, and 21 d. A transverse fracture line was formed in femurs of rats by using a Gigli saw. The Kirschner wire was driven retrograde down from the fracture line to proximal part of the bone and then, the fracture was fixed towards distal part. Acupuncture was applied to the rats for 7, 14, and 21 d as 4 sessions per week after formation of the ***: Malondialdehyde(MDA), reduced glutathione(GSH) levels, catalase(CAT), glutathione-Stransferase(GST), superoxide dismutase(SOD), and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase(G6 PD) activities were measured. Despite the increased MDA levels, G6 PD and SOD activities reduced during the fracture healing. There was a statistically significant increase in MDA, GSH levels, and G6 PD activity in fracture groups compared to control group, but CAT, GST, and SOD activities decreased. The use of acupuncture enhanced callus development and bone mineralization during bone ***: The acupuncture therapy can affect suppression of the effects of free oxygen radicals and regulation of the antioxidant enzyme activity in fracture healing. Thus, it is suggested that acupuncture treatment would be beneficial for fracture healing in order to eliminate the negative effects induced by oxygen free radicals.
