Interspecific differences in plasma carotenoid profiles in nestlings of three sympatric vulture species

Experimental Characterization of the Supersonic Transitional Wake Downstream of a Single Roughness Element

An experimental campaign was carried out to investigate the characteristics of the transitional supersonic wake downstream of a single roughness element. Two Mach numbers were tested, 1.6 and 2.3, and two roughness heights, 0.1 mm and 1 mm. Unsteady and steady wall temperature measurements were taken along and across the roughness wake. The spatial trends of adiabatic wall temperature and heat flux, and the spectral time evolution of temperature were documented in this paper. The initial wall temperature was varied during the temperature measurements, and the resulting steady and unsteady effects on the roughness wake were investigated. The streamwise trends of heat-flux and adiabatic-wall temperature confirmed the transitional nature of the roughness wake. Spectral analysis showed that roughness height and initial wall temperature had the same type of effect on the wake wall-temperature fluctuations. The effect of roughness height was more sensible at Mach 2.3, and that of the initial wall temperature was more evident with the smallest roughness also tested at Mach 2.3.

Alternative approaches for estimating missing climate data:application to monthly precipitation records in South- Central Chile

Background: Over the last decades interest has grown on how climate change impacts forest resources. However,one of the main constraints is that meteorological stations are riddled with missing climatic data. This study compared five approaches for estimating monthly precipitation records: inverse distance weighting(IDW), a modification of IDW that includes elevation differences between target and neighboring stations(IDW_m), correlation coefficient weighting(CCW), multiple linear regression(MLR) and artificial neural networks(ANN).Methods: A complete series of monthly precipitation records(1995-2012) from twenty meteorological stations located in central Chile were used. Two target stations were selected and their neighboring stations, located within a radius of25 km(3 stations) and 50 km(9 stations), were identified. Cross-validation was used for evaluating the accuracy of the estimation approaches. The performance and predictive capability of the approaches were evaluated using the ratio of the root mean square error to the standard deviation of measured data(RSR), the percent bias(PBIAS), and the NashSutcliffe efficiency(NSE). For testing the main and interactive effects of the radius of influence and estimation approaches,a two-level factorial design considering the target station as the blocking factor was ***: ANN and MLR showed the best statistics for all the stations and radius of influence. However, these approaches were not significantly different with IDW_m. Inclusion of elevation differences into IDW significantly improved IDW_m estimates. In terms of precision, similar estimates were obtained when applying ANN, MLR or IDW_m, and the radius of influence had a significant influence on their estimates, we conclude that estimates based on nine neighboring stations located within a radius of 50 km are needed for completing missing monthly precipitation data in regions with complex ***: It is concluded that approaches based on ANN

This article will discuss a false dichotomy between two models,the modern art studio and the post-studio,which oppose the private and the public,the individual and the collective,hiding and the *** will begin by analysing Daniel Buren’s position in his canonical text“Fonction de l’Atelier”and his practice,where the artist defines the foundations of post-studio *** the text also describes a New York studio type that must be left behind,we will analyse Jackson Pollock’s and Andy Warhol’s workspaces through drawing reconstructions to demonstrate that these meet the defining characteristics of both *** will be shown that the artists have used design strategies to retain certain aspects of studio culture while exploring others of the *** turning point reveals that the current belief about the obsolescence of the studio in a global era defined by communication,networking and mobility ignores its emerging post-studio *** work aims to acknowledge this shift,obtaining a critical vision that will allow us to design contemporary workspaces avoiding stereotypical and reductionist approaches.

Synthesis of hydroxymethylfurfural and furfural from hardwood and softwood pulp using ferric sulphate as catalyst

Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and furfural are promising chemicals for the creation of a bio-based economy. The development of an inexpensive catalytic system for converting cellulosic biomass into these chemicals is an important step in this regard. Ferric sulphate is a common, cheap and non-toxic Lewis acid that has been used to catalyse reactions such as wood depolymerisation. In this work, ferric sulphate was used to help the production of HMF and furfural from hardwood and softwood pulps. It was found that for hardwood pulp, the use of ferric sulphate alone gave a maximum HMF yield of 31.6 mol-%. The addition of the ionic liquid [BMIM]Cl or HCl as co-catalysts did not lead to an increase in the yields obtained. A prior decationisation step, however, resulted in HMF yields of 50.4 mol-%. Softwood pulp was harder to depolymerise than hardwood, with a yield of 28.7% obtained using ferric sulphate alone. The maximum HMF yield from softwood, 37.9 mol-%, was obtained using a combination of ferric sulphate and dilute HCl. It was thus concluded that ferric sulphate is a promising catalyst for HMF synthesis from cellulosic biomass.

Inclusive Development in Latin America and Smallholders＇ Interactive Learning Spaces

Inclusive development appears as a challenge in Latin America countries after the rupture of the social inclusion as a trickle-down effect of the economic growth. Searching development with inclusion, several public policies were implemented in Latin American during the last 10 years focusing on the agri-food production. In order to assess the progress to reach such objectives, two cases are studied. Smallholder milk producers at the Loma Blanca community （Mexico） and smallholders olive producers at Aimogasta （Argentina） were considered. Interactive learning spaces were clearly identified as consequence of the linking among product, producers, and territory. The empirical evidence leaves to see a reflexive attachment between actor and activity in the both studied cases. Differences between dynamics in ILS （Interactive Learning Spaces） of each one of the studied cases were found. Nevertheless, opportunity windows are still opened in order to achieve successful interventions. Why does the small producer continue existing as such？ Why do the small producers remain in small scale rather than creating scale or exiting from the market？ These, and others, are trigger questions through which government and non-government organization can drive their action in the field.

A PD-Type State-Dependent Riccati Equation With Iterative Learning Augmentation for Mechanical Systems

Distribution,Properties,Land Use and Management of Mollisols in South America

Mollisols are common in South America. They cover about 8.87 × 107ha, 1.3 × 107ha and 4.3 × 106ha in Argentina, Uruguay and Southern Brazil respectively, which is 11.5% of the world total. Most of South American Mollisols were developed on Pleistocene and Holocene sediments and lie within the limits of the temperate zone, though the extreme north is bordering subtropical and the extreme south is within a cold-temperate zone. All suborders of Mollisols occur in Argentina, the most extensive being Udolls followed by Ustolls, whereas only Udolls, Aquolls and Albolls occur in Uruguay. Vertisols in Uruguay have many properties similar to Mollisols, and the occurrence of Vertisols is strongly associated with Mollisols. The Pampean Mollisols are a significant component of the global breadbasket of modem times. The main Argentine crops are wheat, corn, sorghum, barmy, soybeans and sunflower, while Mollisols in Uruguay remain mostly dedicated to cattle and sheep grazing though crop production has been increasing very rapidly in the last decade. Throughout South America, research has shown that Mollisols are experiencing losses of soil organic matter and nutrients, and degradation of physical properties after long cropping periods, resulting in soil scientists calling for increased conservation practices to reduce future losses and a deterioration of soil quality, and thus a more sustainable agriculture in the region.

One of the largest Ordovician sea-level rises is the Evae transgression,which occurs in the lower part of the Oepikodus evae Biozone,indicative of a late Floian ***,the characteristics associated with the highstand of this event included:a higher proportion of specimens of the index species *** than other species,a diversity acme in the evae Biozone,and a reduction of biogeographic barriers that resulted in a high proportion of species with cosmopolitan *** the present contribution,the pattern of species similarity among Laurentia,Argentine Precordillera,Baltica,Kazakhstania,South China,and Australia is evaluated with a multiple coefficient analysis including only the sections that recorded the highstand of the Evae ***,the effect of possible terrestrial,latitudinal,physicochemical barriers and palaeogeographic distance on the species distribution is statistically *** results show a global pattern of conodont species distribution that is highly constrained by the tested palaeoenvironmental *** suggests that contrary to what was expected for a prominent transgression,faunal barriers did not decrease significantly during the Evae drowning peak.
