Effects of a sex ratio gradient on female mate-copying and choosiness in Drosophila melanogaster

In many sexually reproducing species, individuals can gather information about potential mates by observing their mating success. This behavioral pattern, that we call mate-copying, was reported in the fruit fly where females choosing between 2 males of contrasting phenotypes can build a preference for males of the phenotype they previously saw being chosen by a demonstrator female. As sex ratio is known to affect mate choice, our goal was to test whether mate-copying is also affected by encountered sex ratios. Thus, we created a gradient of sex ratio during demonstrations of mate-copying experiments by changing the number of females observing from a central arena 6 simultaneous demonstrations unfolding in 6 peripheral compartments of a hexagonal device. We also tested whether the sex ratio experienced by females during demonstrations affected their choosiness (male courtship duration and double courtship rate) in subsequent mate-choice tests. Experimental male:female sex ratio during demonstrations did not affect mate-copying indices, but positively affected the proportion of both males courting the female during mate-choice tests, as well as male courtship duration, the latter potentially explaining the former relationship. As expected, the sex ratio affected female choosiness positively, and females seem to have evolved a mate-copying ability independently of sex ratio, and a capacity to adapt their choosiness to male availability. This suggests that, as in many animal species, individuals, especially females, can adapt their mate choice depending on the current sex ratio.

By def inition, sepsis refers to a life threatening organ dysfunction due to a dysregulated host response to an infection[1]. More precisely, sepsis triggers a multifaceted response characterized by a simultaneous manifestation of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory elements that disrupt mechanisms intended to maintain homeostasis. Initially, an overwhelming hyperinflammatory reaction ensues, resulting in tissue damage and organ dysfunction.

Mn_(3)Ag_((1-x))Cu_((x))N antiperovskite thin films with ultra-low temperature coefficient of resistance

We demonstrate the first successful attempt to partially substitute Cu into the Mn_(3)AgN-antiperovskite system to form Mn_(3)Ag_((1-x))Cu_((x))N thin films with an ultra-low temperature coefficient of resistance(TCR)for fabrication of ultra-precise passive components.Films were grown by reactive magnetron sputtering on alumina and glass substrates and were found to be amorphous in nature with highly negative TCR of-233 to-351 ppm/℃in their as-grown state.Increasing Cu alloying from x=0 to 1,resulted in increased sheet resistance,a negative shift of TCR and a change of grain morphology from spherical to elongated.Post-deposition heat treatment at 300-375℃,resulted in a positive shift of TCR and an ultra-low TCR of-4.66 ppm/℃for films with x=0.6.The heat treatment induces grain growth,surface roughness and the formation of a manganese oxide upper surface layer up until temperatures of 350℃,after which surface oxidation begins to dominate.The growth rate of the surface layer is controlled by the Cu concentration and heat treatment temperature,which both play a central role in the development of these novel ultralow TCR Mn_(3)Ag_((1-x))Cu_((x))N thin film structures.

A uniqueness lemma with applications to regularization and incompressible fluid mechanics

In this paper,we extend our previous result from Lévy(2016).We prove that transport equations with rough coefficients do possess a uniqueness property,even in the presence of viscosity.Our method relies strongly on duality and bears a strong resemblance to the well-known DiPerna-Lions theory first developed by DiPerna and Lions(1989).This uniqueness result allows us to reprove the celebrated theorem of Serrin(1962)in a novel way.As a byproduct of the techniques,we derive an L^(1) bound for the vorticity in terms of a critical Lebesgue norm of the velocity field.We also show that the zero solution is unique for the 2D Euler equations on the torus under a mild integrability assumption.

Boundary layer influence on ship model tests in extremely shallow and confined water

Ships sailing in shallow and/or confined water(when calling a harbour or other berthing areas),will experience a different behaviour due to the interaction with vertical and/or horizontal boundaries.Among other hydrodynamic changes induced in confined water,the lateral ship-bank interaction force changes its sign at a critical distance between ship and bank or bottom.However,this distance and its effects on model test results have not been quantified in the past.To investigate the shallow water hydrodynamics coupled with bank effects,systematic model tests were carried out at Flanders Hydraulics Research(FHR)with different ship models.The following parameters were systematically varied:water depth,lateral position,speed,and propeller rate.The change of the ship-bank induced lateral force from an attraction force in medium-deep and shallow water to a repulsion force in extremely shallow water conditions,can be ascribed to the interaction of the boundary layers of the ship model and the environment(tank and installed banks).In this article,a mathematical model is proposed for the critical distance in terms of boundary layer influence thickness.This indicates the range where the model tests are influenced by the horizontal or vertical restrictions combined with the propeller’s dynamic effects.Moreover,the expression has also been extended to describe the relationship between full-scale ship length and water depth with the boundary layer influence thickness.Due to lower Reynolds numbers and relatively thicker boundary layers at model scale,upscaling of the model test results,according to Froude’s law,may provide erroneous results.The influence of the boundary layer initiates at a relatively higher under keel clearance(UKC)for a smaller ship model compared with a larger ship model.Therefore,the boundary layer’s influence with respect to ship model length should be considered during model testing.

Intention and automaticity toward physical and sedentary screen-based leisure activities in adolescents:A profile perspective

Purpose: Physical activity(PA) and sedentary behavior(SB) are increasingly considered independent health behaviors. Additionally, current research suggests that both controlled and automatic determinants account for their adoption. The purpose of this article was to identify intentionàautomaticity profiles toward PA and screen-based SB and to examine how those profiles are associated with different behavioral patterns.Method: Two cross-sectional studies based on self-report questionnaires were conducted with French high school students(Study 1: n = 198;Study 2: n = 185).Results: In all, 4 distinct motivational profiles appeared. The first 3 clusters emerged in both studies: "PA"(high levels of automaticity and intention for PA, low levels of automaticity and intention for screen-based SB); "screen"(high levels of automaticity and intention for screen-based SB, low levels of automaticity and intention for PA), and "mixed"(high levels of all variables), whereas the fourth cluster was observed only in Study 2: "high control"(below-mean levels of automaticity, high levels of intention toward both PA and screen-based SB). Adolescents with a screen profile displayed the least healthy behavioral pattern, whereas those in the PA profile demonstrated the most favorable behaviors.Conclusion: Future research is needed to extend these results to other populations using complementary assessment methods of automatic psychological processes and PA and SB behaviors.

Light absorption and scattering of plasmonic metal nanoparticles can lead to non-equilibrium charge carriers,intense electromagnetic near-fields,and heat generation,with promising applications in a vast range of fields,from chemical and physical sensing to nanomedicine and photocatalysis for the sustainable production of fuels and chemicals.Disentangling the relative contribution of thermal and non-thermal contributions in plasmon-driven processes is,however,difficult.Nanoscale temperature measurements are technically challenging,and macroscale experiments are often characterized by collective heating effects,which tend to make the actual temperature increase unpredictable.This work is intended to help the reader experimentally detect and quantify photothermal effects in plasmon-driven chemical reactions,to discriminate their contribution from that due to photochemical processes and to cast a critical eye on the current literature.To this aim,we review,and in some cases propose,seven simple experimental procedures that do not require the use of complex or expensive thermal microscopy techniques.These proposed procedures are adaptable to a wide range of experiments and fields of research where photothermal effects need to be assessed,such as plasmonic-assisted chemistry,heterogeneous catalysis,photovoltaics,biosensing,and enhanced molecular spectroscopy.

Evolving as a promising paradigm in wireless communications,mobile edge computing（MEC）deploys edge servers with endowed cloud computing services at a network access point such as a base station.Achieved through a well-known technique referred to as computation offloading,MEC connects a user terminal to a mobile base station（BS）to offload computationally intensive and delay sensitive mobile applications,to an edge server attached to the dedicated BS for remote execution.With edge computation offloading,mobile terminals and internet of things（Io T）devices can benefit from cloud computing resources one-hop away from the users’ locations.Unfortunately,high energy consumption is still factor of a major challenge in MEC systems due to long communication latency.Unlike cloud servers,MEC servers are resource-limited and can’t handle an escalating number of offloading tasks at given instances.Existing works of computation offloading in MEC generally focus on addressing this drawback issue by leveraging computation offloading among MEC servers and ignored the fact that,advances in Io T and artificial intelligence（AI）are enabling smart applications resulting in tremendous demand of computing resources which therefore with the growing number of users will cause edge cooperative offloading among base stations to be inefficient to manage these evolving trends.Based on the above-mentioned aspect,this paper proposed an adaptive edge computation offloading and resource allocation that jointly leverages computation offloading among edge servers and between MEC and cloud servers.Especially,the main contributions of this paper are summarized as follows.（1）To reduce the channel pathloss and communication overhead factor of long transmission latency,a server path selection method based on channel frequency strength is considered in this paper.（2）To maintain low interference among contending offloading tasks,this paper adopts a timeslot-based system（TSBS）to efficiently exploit the MEC and system resources.Hence,at a specific time-slot

In vacuo XPS investigation of surface engineering for lithium metal anodes with plasma treatment

Lithium(Li)metal is an attractive anode material with high capacity(3860 mAh g^(−1))and low potential(−3.04 V vs.standard hydrogen electrode)that shows highly promising for applications requiring high energy density.However,the low electrochemical potential of Li metal makes it extremely reactive and inevitably forming a native oxidized layer in the ambient environment and repeatedly being consumed when exposed to liquid electrolytes.It is therefore beneficial to replace the poorly controlled native passivation layer with a tailored artificial SEI to improve interface management between Li and electrolyte and enhance the stability of Li metal battery.Here,we use an integrated glovebox-atomic layer deposition(ALD)-X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)setup to in-situ investigating the pristine Li surface and the surface composition after Ar,H_(2)O_(2),N_(2)and NH_(3)plasma treatment processes.We find that the pristine Li foil is naturally being covered with a native oxidized layer,which is mainly composed of LiOH,Li_(2)O and Li_(2)CO_(3).These investigated plasmas can efficiently remove the oxidized layer from the Li metal surface,in which metallic Li surface is obtained after Ar or H2 plasma treatments,where Ar plasma is more efficient.While O_(2)plasma treatment produces a Li_(2)O layer,and N_(2)or NH_(3)plasma treatment leads to a Li3N(including a certain amount of LiON)layer on the Li surface.When employing the representative metallic Li(by Ar plasma treatment),Li_(2)O layer coated Li(by O_(2)plasma treatment)and Li3N layer coated Li(by N_(2)plasma treatment)foils as electrodes in symmetric Li metal batteries,the Li3N coated Li electrode exhibits much higher stability than that of metallic and Li_(2)O layer coated Li foils.Improved electrochemical performance has also been achieved in LiMn_(2)O_(4)(LMO)||Li full cells using Li anode with Li3N protective coating layer.Our work reveals the detailed process of surface engineering of Li metal anodes with plasma treatments by in vacuo XPS,which may also be extended

Iron-catalyzed reductive cyclization of nitroarenes: Synthesis of aza-heterocycles and DFT calculations

Research into environmentally friendly strategies for hydrogen transfer reduction is increasing, along with the need for more elaborate heterocyclic platforms. Within this context, we develop a new approach for substituted dihydrobenzo[c]carbazoles and indoles. These compounds were synthesized through an iron-catalyzed hydrogen transfer reduction of nitroarenes, followed by intramolecular cyclization. This transformation involves using a Kn?lker-type catalyst, Cs_(2)CO_(3) as the base, and benzyl alcohol as the nonexpensive and low volatile hydrogen donor. We synthesize 30 examples of aza-heterocycles with moderate to excellent yields by applying this strategy. Additionally, DFT calculations demonstrated that the pathway reaction could follow an anionic mechanism.
