Exploring the aptitude of the human brain to compensate functional consequences of a lesion damaging its structural architecture is a key challenge to improve patient care in various neurological diseases,to optimize neuroscientifically-informed strategies of postlesional rehabilitation,and ultimately to develop innovative neuro-regenerative therapies.The term‘plasticity’,initially referring to the intrinsic propensity of neurons to modulate their synaptic transmission in a learning situation,was progressively transposed to brain injury research and clinical neurosciences.Indeed,in the event of brain damage,adaptive mechanisms of compensation allow a partial reshaping of the structure and activities of the central nervous system,thus permitting to some extent the maintenance of brain functions.

BACKGROUND Colorectal signet-ring cell carcinoma(CSRCC)is a rare clinical entity which accounts for approximately 1%of all colorectal cancers.Although multiple studies concerning this specific topic have been published in the past decades,the pathogenesis,associated risk factors,and potential implications on treatment are still poorly understood.Besides the low incidence,historically confusing histological criteria have resulted in confusing data.Nevertheless,the rising incidence of CSRCC along with relatively young age at presentation and associated dismal prognosis,highlight the actual interest to synthesize the known literature regarding CSRCC.AIM To provide an updated overview of risk factors,prognosis,and management of CSRCC.METHODS A literature search in the MEDLINE/PubMed database was conducted with the following search terms used:‘Signet ring cell carcinoma’and‘colorectal’.Studies in English language,published after January 1980,were included.Studies included in the qualitative synthesis were evaluated for content concerning epidemiology,risk factors,and clinical,diagnostic,histological,and molecular features,as well as metastatic pattern and therapeutic management.If possible,presented data was extracted in order to present a more detailed overview of the literature.RESULTS In total,67 articles were included for qualitative analysis,of which 54 were eligible for detailed data extraction.CSRCC has a reported incidence between 0.1%-2.4%and frequently presents with advanced disease stage at the time of diagnosis.CSRCC is associated with an impaired overall survival(5-year OS:0%-46%)and a worse stagecorrected outcome compared to mucinous and not otherwise specified adenocarcinoma.The systematic use of exploratory laparoscopy to determine the presence of peritoneal metastases has been advised.Surgery is the mainstay of treatment,although the rates of curative resection in CSRCC(21%-82%)are lower compared to those in other histological types.In case of peritoneal metastasis,cytoreductive surgery with hyperther

BACKGROUND Crohn’s disease(CD)is complicated by perianal fistulas in approximately 20%of patients.Achieving permanent fistula closure remains a challenge for physicians.An association between serum anti-tumor necrosis factor-αconcentrations and clinical outcomes in patients with CD has been demonstrated;however,little information is available on serum adalimumab(ADA)concentrations and remission of perianal fistulas in such patients.AIM To study the relationship between serum ADA concentrations and clinical remission of CDassociated perianal fistulas.METHODS This cross-sectional study of patients with CD-associated perianal fistulas treated with ADA was performed at four French hospitals between December 2013 and March 2018.At the time of each serum ADA concentration measurement,we collected information about the patients and their fistulas.The primary study endpoint was clinical remission of fistulas defined as the absence of drainage(in accordance with Present’s criteria),with a PDAI≤4,absence of a seton and assessment of the overall evaluation as favorable by the proctologist at the relevant center.We also assessed fistula healing[defined as being in clinical and radiological(magnetic resonance imaging,MRI)remission]and adverse events.RESULTS The study cohort comprised 34 patients who underwent 56 evaluations(patients had between one and four evaluations).Fifteen patients had clinical remissions(44%),four of whom had healed fistulas on MRI.Serum ADA concentrations were significantly higher at evaluations in which clinical remission was identified than at evaluations in which it was not[14(10-16)vs 10(2-15)μg/mL,P=0.01].Serum ADA concentrations were comparable at the times of evaluation of patients with and without healed fistulas[11(7-14)vs 10(4-16)μg/mL,P=0.69].The adverse event rate did not differ between different serum ADA concentrations.CONCLUSION We found a significant association between high serum ADA concentrations and clinical remission of CD-associated perianal fistulas.

AIM To assess the interendoscopist variability in the detection of colorectal polyps according to their location and histological type.METHODS This study was a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from a regional colorectal cancer(CRC) screening program; 2979 complete colonoscopies from 18 endoscopists were included. Variability in performance between endoscopists for detection of at least one adenoma(A), one proximal adenoma(PA), one distal adenoma(DA), and one proximal serrated polyp(PSP) was assessed by using multilevel logistic regression models.RESULTS The observed detection rates among the 18 endoscopists ranged from 24.6% to 47.6%(mean = 35.7%) for A, from 19.1% to 39.0%(mean = 29.4%) for DA, from 6.0% to 22.9%(mean = 12.4%) for PA, and from 1.3% to 19.3%(mean = 6.9%) for PSP.After adjusting for patient-level variables(sex, age), the interendoscopist detection rates variability achieved a significant level for A, PA, and PSP but not for DA(P = 0.03, P = 0.02, P = 0.02 and P = 0.08, respectively). This heterogeneity, as measured by the variance partition coefficient, was approximately threefold higher for PA(6.6%) compared with A(2.1%), and twofold higher for PSP(12.3%) compared with PA.CONCLUSION These results demonstrate significant interendoscopist variability for proximal polyp particularly for serrated p o l y p s, b u t n o t f o r d i s t a l a d e n o m a d e t e c t i o n. These findings contribute to explain the decreased effectiveness of complete colonoscopies at preventing proximal CRCs and the need to carefully assess the proximal colon during scope procedure.

Examples of predator–prey interactions in which flies rob ants are uncommon.To date,this behavior has only been recorded in the genus Bengalia Robineau-Desvoidy(Bengaliinae,Diptera,Calliphoridae).These predatory flies ambush ants,and rob them of the food or offspring that they are carrying.However,because of the rarity of this behavior,the reasons and consequences(evolutionary advantages)are unknown,and indeed,the behavior has been sometimes considered anecdotal.In this study,we employed field investigations and behavioral analyses to investigate whether the sex of the fly Bengalia varicolor,or the weight and quality of the food carried by Pheidole nodus ants influenced fly–ant interactions in their natural habitats.We show that food weight and quality influenced the behavior of B.varicolor independent of the fly’s sex.Robbing behavior by the flies was more successful when the food robbed was of high-quality and light in weight.Furthermore,the weight of the food robbed modulated the escape distance the flies could carry it.This then may affect the food quality and weight transported by the ants.This is a novel example of deciphering the relationship between highwayman flies and their ant victims.Given the widespread distribution of Bengalia flies,we suggest that such interspecific predator–prey encounters may shape the robbery interactions and the carrying behavior of further ant species in nature.

The effects of ultrafine WC(WC_(UF),0.5μm) or W(1μm) and C(0.3μm)(W+C)_(UF) additives on the densification,microstructure and mechanical properties of coarse-grained cemented carbides were compared systematically.Overall,the cemented carbides with WC_(UF)/(W+C)_(UF) additives are almost fully densification to be higher than 99%,and the average grain size is kept above 2.8μm.The WC_(UF) additive assists grains to(truncated)trigonal prism shape by two dimensional(2D) growth,whereas the(W+C)_(UF) additive assists grains to rounded shape by three dimensional(3D) growth,lowers WC contiguity and increases face-centered-cubic Co.The hardness and bending strength of(75WC_(C)-15WC_(UF))-10Co are 86.6 HRA and 2 272 MPa,respectively,both higher than those of(75WC_(C)-15(W+C)_(UF))-10Co,which could be ascribed to the enhanced densification and unblemished grains.However,the fracture toughness of the(75WC_(C)-15(W+C)_(UF))-10Co is 23.5 MPa·m^(1/2),higher than that of the(75WC_(C)-15WC_(UF))-10Co due to the uniform WC-Co structure and flexible binder phase.

BACKGROUND The individual performances and the complementarity of Crohn's disease(CD)activity index(CDAI), C-reactive protein(CRP) and faecal calprotectin(Fcal) to monitor patients with CD remain poorly inves-tigated in the era of "tight control"and "treat to target" strategies.AIM To assess CDAI, CRP and Fcal variation, alone or combined, after 12 wk(W12) of anti-tumor necrosis factor(TNF) therapy to predict corticosteroids-free remission(CFREM = CDAI 150 and either CRP >2.9 mg/L or Fcal > 250 μg/g were prospectively enrolled.RESULTS Among the 40 included patients, 13 patients(32.5%) achieved CFREM at W52. In univariable analysis, CDAI < 150 at W12(P = 0.012), CRP level < 2.9 mg/L at W12(P = 0.001) and Fcal improvement at W12(Fcal < 300 μg/g; or, for patients with initial Fcal < 300 μg/g, at least 50% decrease of Fcal or normalization of Fcal(< 100 μg/g)(P = 0.001) were predictive of CFREM at W52. Combined endpoint(CDAI < 150 and CRP ≤ 2.9 mg/L and FCal improvement) at W12 was the best predictor of CFREM at W52 with positive predictive value = 100.0%(100.0-100.0)and negative predictive value = 87.1%(75.3-98.9). In multivariable analysis, Fcal improvement at W12 [odd ratio(OR) = 45.1(2.96-687.9); P = 0.03] was a better predictor of CFREM at W52 than CDAI < 150 [OR = 9.3(0.36-237.1); P = 0.145]and CRP < 2.9 mg/L(0.77-278.0; P = 0.073).CONCLUSION The combined monitoring of CDAI, CRP and Fcal after anti-TNF induction therapy is able to predict favorable outcome within one year in patients with CD.

Background:Adenosine triphosphatase inhibitory factor 1(IF1)is a key protein involved in energy metabolism.IF1 has been linked to various agerelated diseases,although its relationship with physical activity(PA)remains unclear.Additionally,the apolipoprotein A-I(apoA-I),a PA-modulated lipoprotein,could play a role in this relationship because it shares a binding site with IF1 on the cell-surface ATP synthase.We examined here the associations between chronic PA and plasma IF1 concentrations among older adults,and we investigated whether apoA-I mediated these associations.Methods:In the present work,1096 healthy adults(63.8%females)aged 70 years and over who were involved in the Multidomain Alzheimer Prevention Trial study were included.IF1 plasma concentrations(square root of ng/mL)were measured at the 1-year visit of the Multidomain Alzheimer Prevention Trial,while PA levels(square root of metabolic equivalent task min/week)were assessed using questionnaires administered each year from baseline to the 3-year visit.Multiple linear regressions were performed to investigate the associations between the first-year mean PA levels and IF1 concentrations.Mediation analyses were conducted to examine whether apoA-I mediated these associations.Mixedeffect linear regressions were carried out to investigate whether the 1-year visit IF1 concentrations predicted subsequent changes in PA.Results:Multiple linear regressions indicated that first-year mean PA levels were positively associated with IF1 concentrations(B=0.021;SE=0.010;p=0.043).Mediation analyses revealed that about 37.7%of this relationship was mediated by apoA-I(B_(ab)=0.008;SE=0.004;p=0.023).Longitudinal investigations demonstrated that higher concentrations of IF1 at the 1-year visit predicted a faster decline in PA levels over the subsequent 2 years(time×IF1:B=0.148;SE=0.066;p=0.025).Conclusion:This study demonstrates that regular PA is associated with plasma IF1 concentrations,and it suggests that apoA-I partly mediates this association.Additionally,this study f

Metal-organic frameworks(MOFs)are attracting increasing interests as photocatalysts for solar-driven hydrogen production from water.This paper reports on a comparative study of using either acetic acid(AA)or trifluoroacetic acid(TFA)as the representative UiO-66 organic modulators for synthesizing visible light responsive UiO-66(Zr)-X(X:NH_(2) or NO_(2))photocatalysts for water splitting.The results show that photocatalytic hydrogen generation from a water/methanol mixture can be improved by varying the nature and amount of the modulator employed to prepare the different UiO-66(Zr)-X(X:NH_(2) or NO_(2))solid derivatives.UiO-66(Zr)-NH_(2) was the most active photocatalyst,followed by UiO-66(Zr)-NO_(2),both prepared with 12 equivalents of AA with respect to the organic ligand.This UiO-66(Zr)-NH_(2) solid was more active than the parent MOF in photocatalytic overall water splitting(OWS)(H_(2) and O_(2) production of 450 and 160μmol·g^(-1),respectively,in 5 h;apparent quantum yield(AQY)at 400 nm of 0.06%)in the absence of methanol and compares favourably with analogous reports.Information on the photocatalytic activity of the most active solids of both series was obtained by means of a series of techniques,including ultraviolet-visible(UV-vis)diffuse reflectance,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),laser flash photolysis(LFP),electron spin resonance(ESR),photoluminescence and photoelectrochemical measurements together with density functional theory(DFT)calculations.The results showed that organic acid modulators can be used to enhance the photocatalytic activity of missing linker UiO-66 defective materials in solar-powered water splitting.
