Diabetic retinopathy identification based on multi-sourcefree domain adaptation

AIM:To address the challenges of data labeling difficulties,data privacy,and necessary large amount of labeled data for deep learning methods in diabetic retinopathy(DR)identification,the aim of this study is to develop a source-free domain adaptation(SFDA)method for efficient and effective DR identification from unlabeled data.METHODS:A multi-SFDA method was proposed for DR identification.This method integrates multiple source models,which are trained from the same source domain,to generate synthetic pseudo labels for the unlabeled target domain.Besides,a softmax-consistence minimization term is utilized to minimize the intra-class distances between the source and target domains and maximize the inter-class distances.Validation is performed using three color fundus photograph datasets(APTOS2019,DDR,and EyePACS).RESULTS:The proposed model was evaluated and provided promising results with respectively 0.8917 and 0.9795 F1-scores on referable and normal/abnormal DR identification tasks.It demonstrated effective DR identification through minimizing intra-class distances and maximizing inter-class distances between source and target domains.CONCLUSION:The multi-SFDA method provides an effective approach to overcome the challenges in DR identification.The method not only addresses difficulties in data labeling and privacy issues,but also reduces the need for large amounts of labeled data required by deep learning methods,making it a practical tool for early detection and preservation of vision in diabetic patients.

Surface reconstruction of heterostructures in alkaline medium towards enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution

Constructing heterostructures has proved to be a successful strategy to fabricate electrocatalysts with high efficiency for water splitting.However,the structure evolution in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction lacks investigation and the specific active center remains disputable.Herein,we take the well-designed Ni3S2@VO2heterostructures as a model to investigate the electrocatalytic activity and the surface reconstruction process of heterostructure catalysts in alkaline electrolyte.The Ni3S2@VO2heterostructures,with Ni3S2nanorods as the core and VO2nanoflakes as the shell,coupled with the high conductive Ni3S2,the hydrophilic VO2and modulated electronic structures at the interfaces,exhibited prominent activity and superior stability at various current densities.Further,the ex-situ characterizations confirmed that the surface reconstruction from Ni3S2@VO2into Ni3S2@amorphous-Ni（OH）2in alkaline media could optimize the water dissociation barrier and exposed large active area,thereby contributing to improved electrocatalytic performance.Our study not only introduces novel high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction（HER）,but also provides a new avenue for re-examining hetero-structural catalysts in alkaline solutions.

Effect of Acupuncture on Endometrial Blood Flow in Women Undergoing in vitro Fertilization Embryo Transfer: A Single Blind, Randomized Controlled Trial

Objective: To evaluate the effect of manual acupuncture on endometrial blood flow parameters by three-dimensional(3D) power Doppler ultrasound in women undergoing in vitro fertilization embryo transfer(IVF-ET). Methods: Seventy patients undergoing IVF-ET were equally randomized into traditional or sham acupuncture treatment group for totally 4 days(from the day of oocyte aspiration to the day of embryo transfer) of treatment by random envelope method at the Reproductive Medicine Center and Outpatient Department of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medicine College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology from January 2013 to December 2015. Patients in the traditional acupuncture group accepted traditional acupuncture methods with manual acupuncture, and Zhongji(CV3), Qihai(CV 6), Sanyinjiao(SP6), Taichong(LR 3), Tianshu(ST 25), Guilai(ST 29) and Zusanli(ST 36) were chosen. Patients at the sham acupuncture group accepted shallow acupuncture methods at 4 non-meridian points at each shoulder and upper arm. Outcome measures included endometrial ultrasonic indices such as vascularization index(VI), flow index(FI) and vascularization flow index(VFI), endometrial thickness and volume, subendometrial VI(sVI), subendometrial FI(sFI), subendometrial VFI(sVFI), implantation rate, clinical pregnancy rate, abortion rate, live birth rate and number of live births. Results: Finally, 34 patients in the traditional acupuncture group and 35 in the sham acupuncture group completed this trial. VI, FI and VFI of the traditional acupuncture group were significantly higher than those in the sham acupuncture group(P0.05). Research on the mechanism of the two-dimensional ultrasonic surface burnishing process to enhance the wear resistance for aluminum alloy

The gradient nanostructure is machined on the aluminum(Al)alloy by the two-dimensional ultrasonic surface burnishing process(2D-USBP).The mechanism of why the gradient nanostructure enhances wear resistance is investigated.The mechanical properties and microstructure characterization for the gradient nanostructure are performed by operating a nanoindenter,transmission electron microscopy(TEM),and electron backscattered diffraction(EBSD).Dry wear tests are performed on the samples before and after machining to evaluate the wear resistance and mechanisms.The effect of the gradient nanostructure on the wear resistance is explored by developing the crystal plasticity(CP)finite element and molecular dynamics(MD)models.The characterization results show that the 2D-USBP sample prepared a gradient structure of~600μm thick on the aluminum surface,increasing the surface hardness from 1.13 to 1.71 GPa and reducing the elastic modulus from 78.84 to 70.14 GPa.The optimization of the surface microstructure and the increase of the mechanical properties effectively enhance the wear resistance of the sample,with 41.20%,39.07%,and 54.58% of the wear scar areas for the 2D-USBP treated samples to the original samples under 5,10,and 15 N loads,respectively.The gradient nanostructure hinders the slip of dislocations inside the sample during the wear process and reduces the size and scope of plastic deformation;meanwhile,the resistance to deformation,adhesion,and crack initiation and propagation of the sample surface is improved,resulting in enhanced wear resistance.

Histone acetyltransferase 1 serves as a succinyl transferase in tumors Protein post-translational modification(PTM)as an important research field has attracted increasing attention.Recently,our group has reported that histone acetyltransferase 1(HAT1)succinylated histones and non-histones and promoted tumorigenesis1.HAT1 plays a role in different biological processes,including cell cycle progression,glucose metabolism,histone production,and DNA damage repair2.We found that HAT1 succinylated histone H3 on K122.For a non-histone,HAT1 catalyzed the succinylation of phosphoglycerate mutase 1(PGAM1)on K99 to increase its enzyme activity,promoting glycolysis in cancer cells.Functionally,HAT1-mediated succinylation contributed to tumorigenesis.Our finding provided new insight into the mechanism of how a histone acetyltransferase HAT1 modulated succinylation during cancer development.

What is the Role of Gravity, Turbulence and Magnetic Fields in High-mass Star Formation Clouds?

To explore the potential role of gravity,turbulence and magnetic fields in high-mass star formation in molecular clouds,this study revisits the velocity dispersion–size （σ–L） and density–size （ρ–L） scalings and the associated turbulent energy spectrum using an extensive data sample.The sample includes various hierarchical density structures in high-mass star formation clouds,across scales of 0.01–100 pc.We observe σ∝L0.26and ρ∝L-1.54scalings,converging toward a virial equilibrium state.A nearly flat virial parameter–mass (αvir-M) distribution is seen across all density scales,with αvirvalues centered around unity,suggesting a global equilibrium maintained by the interplay between gravity and turbulence across multiple scales.Our turbulent energy spectrum (E（k）)analysis,based on theσ–L andρ–L scalings,yields a characteristic E（k）∝k-1.52.These findings indicate the potential significance of gravity,turbulence,and possibly magnetic fields in regulating dynamics of molecular clouds and high-mass star formation therein.

A Novel Method for Forecasting Freak Wave Occurrence in A Short Crested Coastal Sea

In order to forecast the distribution of crest amplitudes and the occurrence of freak waves in a short crested coastal sea,a novel transformed linear simulation method is initially proposed in this paper.A Hermite transformation model expressed as a monotonic cubic polynomial serves as the foundation for the novel simulation technique.The wave crest amplitude exceedance probabilities of two sea states-one with a directional wave spectrum based on the measured wave elevation data at the Yura coast and the other with a typical directional JONSWAP wave spectrum-have been predicted using the novel simulation method that has been proposed.The likelihood that a particular critical wave crest amplitude will be exceeded is directly correlated with the probability that freak waves will occur.It is shown that the novel simulation approach suggested can provide predictions that are more precise than those obtained from the Rayleigh crest amplitude distribution model,the Jahns and Wheeler crest amplitude distribution model,or the conventional linear simulation method.This study also demonstrated that the nonlinear simulation method is less effective than the novel simulation method in terms of efficiency.

Effects of rare earth elements on inclusions, microstructure and impact toughness of spring steel

Spring steel is an indispensable basic part manufacturing material in mechanical equipment,which is widely used in transportation tools such as automobiles,railways,construction machinery and other industries.The effects of rare earth(RE)on inclusions,microstructure,carbides and impact toughness of 50CrV spring steel were studied by means of optical microscope,scanning electron microscope,transmission electron microscope and impact tester.The results show that the addition of rare earth can modify the main MnS and Al_(2)O_(3) inclusions in steel to form spherical or near-spherical rare earth inclusions,and the size of inclusions is significantly reduced.In the quenched structure,the size of martensite slab becomes smaller and the structure is refined.After tempering,the carbide changes from sheet to ellipse,which makes it easier for spring steel to form stress concentration cracks under stress.VC becomes finer and more dispersed,which leads to better pinning of grain boundaries and smaller grain sizes.The impact toughness of 50CrV-RE spring steel increased from 21 to 41 J by 95%due to the improvement of inclusions,microstructure and carbides by rare earth.It is possible to improve the strength and toughness of spring steel for the improvement of railway running speed and the development of vehicle lightweight in China.

Effect of Mn addition on microstructure and mechanical properties of GX40CrNiSi25-12 austenitic heat resistant steel

Three types of steels were designed on the basis of GX40CrNiSi25-12 austenitic heat resistant steel by adding different Mn contents(2wt.%,6wt.%,and 12wt.%).Thermodynamic calculation,microstructure characterization and mechanical property tests were conducted to investigate the effect of Mn addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the austenitic heat resistant steel.Results show that the matrix structure in all the three types of steels at room temperature is completely austenite.Carbides NbC and M_(23)C_(6)precipitate at grain boundaries of austenite matrix.With the increase of Mn content,the number of carbides increases and their distribution becomes more uniform.With the Mn content increases from 1.99%to 12.06%,the ultimate tensile strength,yield strength and elongation increase by 14.6%,8.0%and 46.3%,respectively.The improvement of the mechanical properties of austenitic steels can be explained by utilizing classic theories of alloy strengthening,including solid solution strengthening,precipitation strengthening,and grain refinement.The increase in alloy strength can be attributed to solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening caused by the addition of Mn.The improvement of the plasticity of austenitic steels can be explained from two aspects:grain refinement and homogenization of precipitated phases.

Cuproptosis mediates copper-induced testicularspermatogenic cell death

Cuproptosis,a novel mechanism of programmed cell death,has not been fully explored in the context of spermatogenic cells.Thisstudy investigated the potential involvement of cuproptosis in spermatogenic cell death using a mouse model of copper overload.Sixty male Institute of Cancer Research(ICR)mice were randomly divided into four groups that received daily oral gavage withsodium chloride(control)or copper sulfate(CuSO4)at 50 mg kg−1,100 mg kg−1,or 200 mg kg−1,for 42 consecutive days.Micesubjected to copper overload exhibited a disruption in copper homeostasis.Additionally,significant upregulated expression of keycuproptosis factors was accompanied by a significant rise in the rates of testicular tissue cell apoptosis.Immunohistochemicalanalysis revealed the presence of ferredoxin 1(Fdx1)in Sertoli cells,Leydig cells,and spermatogenic cells at various stages oftesticular development,and the Fdx1-positive staining area was significantly increased in copper-overloaded mice.Mitochondrialdysfunction and decreased adenosine triphosphate levels were also observed,further implicating mitochondrial damage undercuproptosis.Further analyses revealed pathological lesions and blood−testis barrier destruction in the testicular tissue,accompaniedby decreased sperm concentration and motility,in copper-overloaded mice.In summary,our results indicate that copper-overloadedmice exhibit copper homeostasis disorder in the testicular tissue and that cuproptosis participates in spermatogenic cell death.These findings provide novel insights into the pathogenic mechanisms underlying spermatogenic cell death and provide initialexperimental evidence for the occurrence of cuproptosis in the testis.
