Effect of different resuscitation strategies on post-resuscitation brain damage in a porcine model of prolonged cardiac arrest

Background The choice of a defibrillation or a cardiopulmonary resuscitation （CPR）-first strategy in the treatment of prolonged cardiac arrest （CA） is still controversial. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of defibrillation or CPR administered first on neurological prognostic markers in a porcine model of prolonged CA. Methods After 8 minutes of untreated ventricular fibrillation （VF）, 24 inbred Chinese Wuzhishan minipigs were randomized to receive either defibrillation first （ID group, n=12） or chest compression first （IC group, n=12）. In the ID group, a shock was delivered immediately. If defibrillation failed to attain restoration of spontaneous circulation （ROSC）, manual chest compressions were rapidly initiated at a rate of 100 compressions/min and a compression-to-ventilation ratio of 30：2. If VF persisted after five cycles of CPR, a second defibrillation attempt was made. In the IC group, chest compressions were delivered first, followed by a shock. After successful ROSC, hemodynamic status and blood samples were obtained at 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, and 24 hours after ROSC. Porcine-specific neuron-specific enolase （NSE） and S100B were measured from sera using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. Porcine cerebral performance category scores were used to evaluate preliminary neurological function following 24 hours recovery. Surviving pigs were sacrificed at 24 hours after ROSC and brains were removed for electron microscopy analysis. Results The number of shocks, total defibrillation energy, and time to ROSC were significantly lower in the ID group compared with the IC group. Compared with the IC group, S100B expression was decreased at 2 and 4 hours after ROSC, and NSE expression decreased at 6 and 24 hours after ROSC in the ID group. Zircon SHRIMP U-Pb dating for olivine gabbro at Wangmuguan in the Beihuaiyang zone and its geological significance

Zircon SHRIMP U-Pb dating was per- formed for olivine gabbro at Wangmuguan in the Beihuaiyang zone of the Dabie orogen and its coun- try rock (garnet-bearing epidote-mica-quartz schist). The results show that the gabbro was crystallized at 635 ± 5 Ma, in the late Neoproterozoic rather than in the late Paleozoic as previously suggested; its coun- try rocks formed at 464±7 Ma, younger than the en- closed gabbro. The U-Pb age for the gabbro is in good agreement with ages for tuff interbedded with sediments from the Doushantuo Formation in the South China Block and late-Neoproterozoic basic dyke swarms distributed on a large scale over areas of Suizhou to Zaoyang of Hubei Province in the northern margin of the South China Block. This sug- gests a large-scale magmatic activity occurred at the late Neoproterozoic in the South China Block, so that the gabbro at Wangmuguan in the western segment of the Beihuaiyang zone is geotectonic affinity to the northern margin of the South China Block. Since the olivine gabbro occurs within the schist of Ordovician protolith with tectonic contact between them but forming in different tectonic settings, it is concluded that the late-Neoproterozoic gabbro was detached from the Precambrian basement of the South China Block during the Triassic subduction of the South China Block, and tectonically thrusted over the metamorphosed rocks in the southern margin of the North China Block.

The size and density of Ag nanoparticles on n-layer MoS2 exhibit thickness- dependent behavior. The size and density of these particles increased and decreased, respectively, with increasing layer number （n） of n-layer MoS2. Furthermore, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） of Ag on this substrate was observed. The enhancement factor of this scattering varied with the thickness of MoS2. The mechanisms governing the aforementioned thickness dependences are proposed and discussed.

The action mechanism by which C1q/tumor necrosis factor-related protein-6 alleviates cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in diabetic mice

Studies have shown that C1q/tumor necrosis factor-related protein-6 (CTRP6) can alleviate renal ischemia/reperfusion injury in mice. However, its role in the brain remains poorly understood. To investigate the role of CTRP6 in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury associated with diabetes mellitus, a diabetes mellitus mouse model of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury was established by occlusion of the middle cerebral artery. To overexpress CTRP6 in the brain, an adeno-associated virus carrying CTRP6 was injected into the lateral ventricle. The result was that oxygen injury and inflammation in brain tissue were clearly attenuated, and the number of neurons was greatly reduced. In vitro experiments showed that CTRP6 knockout exacerbated oxidative damage, inflammatory reaction, and apoptosis in cerebral cortical neurons in high glucose hypoxia-simulated diabetic cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. CTRP6 overexpression enhanced the sirtuin-1 signaling pathway in diabetic brains after ischemia/reperfusion injury. To investigate the mechanism underlying these effects, we examined mice with depletion of brain tissue-specific sirtuin-1. CTRP6-like protection was achieved by activating the sirtuin-1 signaling pathway. Taken together, these results indicate that CTRP6 likely attenuates cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury through activation of the sirtuin-1 signaling pathway.

Single atom(SA)catalysts have achieved great success on highly selective heterogeneous catalysis due to their abundant and homogeneous active *** electronic structures of these active sites,restrained by their localized coordination environments,significantly determine their catalytic performances,which are difficult to ***,we investigated the effect of localized surface plasmon resonance(LSPR)on engineering the electronic structures of single atomic ***,core–shell structures consisted of Au core and transition metal SAs loaded N-doped carbon(CN)shell were constructed,namely Au@M-SA/CN(M=Ni,Fe,and Co).It was demonstrated that plasmon-induced hot electrons originated from Au were directionally injected to the M-SAs under visible light irradiation,which significantly changed their electronic structures and meanwhile facilitated improved overall charge separation *** as-prepared Au@Ni-SA/CN exhibited highly efficient and selective photocatalytic CO_(2) reduction to CO performance,which is 20.8,17.5,and 6.9 times those of Au nanoparticles,Au@CN,and Ni-SA/CN,*** spectroscopy analysis and theoretical calculations confirmed that the plasmon enhanced Ni-SA/CN sites featured increased charge density for efficient intermediate activation,contributing to the superb photocatalytic *** work provides a new insight on plasmon and atomic site engineering for efficient and selective catalysis.

Effect and safety of sorafenib in patients with intermediate hepatocellular carcinoma who received transarterial chemoembolization: A retrospective comparative study

AIM To evaluate the safety and efficacy of sorafenib plus transarterial chemoembolization(TACE) treatment for intermediate hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS Sixty-seven patients with intermediate-stage [Barcelona Clinic liver cancer stage B(BCLC-B)] HCC who were treated with sorafenib plus TACE or TACE alone between 2009 and 2011 were included in the study. Follow-up was until 2014 or patient death. Two groups were defined in the experiment: The experimental group, treated with sorafenib plus TACE, and the control group, treated with standard TACE *** The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that the median overall survival(m OS) of the experimental group was 35.2 mo, while that of the control group was 22.0 mo(P < 0.05). Sorafenib plus TACE showed higher incidence rates of rash, hand-foot syndrome(HFS), and hypertension(P < 0.05) than TACE treatment *** Sorafenib plus TACE treatment for BCLC-B HCC significantly prolonged the m OS of patients compared to TACE treatment alone. The most common toxicities with sorafenib were rash(31.6%), HFS(39.5%) and hypertension(31.6%), but there were no intolerable adverse events. The Cox multivariate analysis showed that the survival of patients with BCLC-B HCC depended on the Child-Pugh classification, tumor diameter, and treatment with sorafenib plus TACE compared to TACE alone.

Taxonomic dependency and spatial heterogeneity in assembly mechanisms of bacteria across complex coastal waters

Background Understanding community assembly mechanisms across taxa and space is fundamental for microbial ecology. However, the variability and determinants of assembly processes over taxa and space remain unclear. Here, we investigated taxonomic dependency and spatial heterogeneity in bacterial assembly mechanisms across coastal waters in the East China Sea using neutral and null models with customized visualization *** Overall, bacterial assembly mechanisms varied across broad taxonomic groups(phyla and proteobacterial classes) and space at the regional scale. A determinism–stochasticity balanced mechanism governed total bacterial assembly, while taxonomic dependency existed in assembly mechanisms and ecological processes. Among community ecological features, niche breadth and negative-to-positive cohesion ratio were strongly associated with the determinism-to-stochasticity ratio of bacterial groups. Bacterial assembly mechanisms commonly exhibited spatial heterogeneity, the extent and determinants of which varied across taxonomic groups. Spatial assembly of total bacteria was directly driven by many environmental factors and potential interactions between taxa, but not directly by geographic factors. Overall, the bacterial groups with higher spatial heterogeneity in assembly mechanisms were more related to environmental and/or geographic factors(except Bacteroidetes), while those with lower heterogeneity were more related to ecological *** Our results confirm the pervasiveness of taxonomic dependency and spatial heterogeneity in bacterial assembly, providing a finer understanding about regulation across complex coastal waters.
