A PQAS-containing gl.ss-ionomer cement for improved antibacterial.function

The novel.non-l.achabl. pol. (quaternary ammonium sal.) (PQAS)-containing antibacterial.gl.ss- ionomer cement has been devel.ped. Compressive strength (CS) and S. mutans viabil.ty were used as tool. for strength and antibacterial.activity eval.ations, respectivel.. Al. the specimens were conditioned in distil.ed water at 37?C prior to testing. Commercial.gl.ss-ionomer cement Fuji II l. was used as control. With PQAS addition, the studied cements showed a reduction in CS with 25-95% for Fuji II l. and 13-78% for the experimental.cement and a reduction in S. mutans viabil.ty with 40-79% for Fuji II l. and 40-91% for the experimental.cement. The experimental.cement showed l.ss CS reduction and higher antibacterial.activity as compared to Fuji II l.. The l.ng-term aging study indicates that the cements are permanentl. antibacterial.with no PQAS l.aching. It appears that the experimental.cement is a cl.nical.y attractive dental.restorative that can be potential.y used for l.ng- l.sting restorations due to its high mechanical.strength and permanent antibacterial.function.

Viral.l.ad measurements are an essential.tool.for the l.ng-term cl.nical.care of hum an immunodeficiency virus(HIV)-positive individual.. The gol.d standards in viral.l.ad instrumentation, however, are stil. too l.mited by their size, cost, and sophisticated operation for these measurements to be ubiquitous in remote settings with poor heal.hcare infrastructure, incl.ding parts of the worl. that are disproportionatel. affected by HIV infection. The chal.enge of devel.ping a point-of-care pl.tform capabl. of making viral.l.ad more accessibl. has been frequentl. approached but no sol.tion has yet emerged that meets the practical.requirements of l.w cost, portabil.ty, and ease-of-use. In this paper, we perform reverse-transcription l.op-mediated isothermal.ampl.fication(RT-l.MP) on minimal.y processed HIV-spiked whol. bl.od sampl.s with a microfl.idic and sil.con microchip pl.tform, and perform fl.orescence measurements with a consumer smartphone. Our integrated assay shows ampl.fication from as few as three viruses in a ~ 60 nl.RTl.MP dropl.t, corresponding to a whol. bl.od concentration of 670 viruses per μl.of whol. bl.od. The technol.gy contains greater power in a digital.RT-l.MP approach that coul. be scal.d up for the determination of viral.l.ad from a fl.ger prick of bl.od in the cl.nical.care of HIV-positive individual.. We demonstrate that al. aspects of this viral.l.ad approach, from a drop of bl.od to imaging the RT-l.MP reaction, are compatibl. with l.b-on-a-chip components and mobil. instrumentation.

Potential.of the neonicotinoid imidacl.prid and the oxadiazine indoxacarb for control.ing five col.opteran pests of stored grain

The potential.for using imidacl.prid （a neonicotinoid） and indoxacarb （an oxadiazine） as grain protectants was investigated in bioassays against resistant strains of five stored grain beetl.s. The species investigated were Rhyzopertha dominica （E）（the l.sser grain borer）, Sitophil.s oryzae （l.）（the rice weevil., Tribol.um castaneum （Herbst）（the rust-red fl.ur beetl.）, Oryzaephil.s surinamensis （l.）（the saw tooth fl.ur beetl.）, and Cryptol.stesferrugineus （Stephens）（the fiat grain beetl.）. Each of these species has devel.ped resistance to one or more protectants, incl.ding organophosphorus insecticides, synthetic pyrethroids and the juvenil. hormone anal.gue methoprene. Mortal.ty and re- production after a 2-week exposure of adul.s to treated wheat depended on species, dose and insecticide. Imidacl.prid had no effect on S. oryzae at any dose, but none of the other species produced any l.ve progeny at 10 mg/kg. Indoxacarb had no effect on T. castaneum at any dose, but none of the other species produced any l.ve progeny at 5 mg/kg. The resul.s show that al.hough both imidacl.prid and indoxacarb can control.at l.ast four of the five key pests tested at doses comparabl. to those used for organophosphorus protectants, more potent neonicotinoid or oxadiazine insecticides woul. be needed than either of these to provide broad spectrum protection of stored grain .
