Surgical outcomes for unilateral superior oblique palsy in Chinese population: a retrospective study

AIM: To evaluate the outcome after surgery for unilateral superior oblique(SO) palsy in ***: The medical records of 39 patients that underwent surgery for unilateral SO palsy between January 2003 and December 2012 at Caritas Medical Centre, Hong Kong, were retrospectively reviewed. All surgeries were performed by a single surgeon. Pre-operative assessments for vertical deviation, cyclo-deviation, and Knapp’s classification were obtained to determine the nature and degree of surgical *** deviation was measured at 1wk; 1, 6mo and on last follow-up day post-operatively. Cyclo-deviation was measured on last follow-up day ***: During the 10 y period, 39 subjects were recruited. The most common etiology was congenital(94.9%). Knapp’s Type III(66.7%) and Type I(12.8%)classifications were the most common subtypes. To treat SO palsy, the most common surgical procedures were:isolated inferior oblique(IO) anteriorization(41.0%),isolated IO myectomy(10.3%), and isolated IO recession(10.3%). At 3.5 ±2.1y post-operatively, the vertical deviation was significantly reduced(15.1 ±6.2 PD versus0.5±1.4 PD, P ut significant improvement in cyclo-deviation(P =0.5). Initial vertical deviation was correlated with cyclo-torsion(r =0.4, P =0.007). Those with over-correction had greater initial vertical deviation(19.4±7.2 PD versus 13.2±4.3 PD, P =0.003). After a single operation, 84.6% of subjects achieved a vertical deviation within ±3 PD.· CONCLuSION: The majority of subjects achieved corrected vertical deviation after a single surgery although there was no improvement in *** with over-correction of primary position deviation had greater preoperative vertical deviation and it may be related to simultaneous multiple muscle surgery.

The undirected power graph P(Zub>nub>) of a finite group Zub>nub> is the graph with vertex set G and two distinct vertices u and v are adjacent if and only if u ≠ v and or . The Wiener index W(P(Zub>nub>)) of an undirected power graph P(Zub>nub>) is defined to be sum of distances between all unordered pair of vertices in P(Zub>nub>). Similarly, the edge-Wiener index Wub>eub>(P(Zub>nub>)) of P(Zub>nub>) is defined to be the sum of distances between all unordered pairs of edges in P(Zub>nub>). In this paper, we concentrate on the wiener index of a power graph , P(Zub>pqub>) and P(Zub>pub>). Firstly, we obtain new results on the wiener index and edge-wiener index of power graph P(Zub>nub>), using m,n and Euler function. Also, we obtain an equivalence between the edge-wiener index and wiener index of a power graph of Zub>nub>.

AIM To investigate the effects of orally gavaged aqueous rhubarb extract(RE) on 5-fluorouracil(5-Fu)-induced intestinal mucositis in rats. METHODS Female Dark Agouti rats(n = 8/group) were gavaged daily(1 mL) with water, high-dose RE(HDR; 200 mg/kg) or low-dose RE(LDR; 20mg/kg) for eight days. Intestinal mucositis was induced(day 5) with 5-Fu(150 mg/kg) via intraperitoneal injection. Intestinal tissue samples were collected for myeloperoxidase(MPO) activity and histological examination. Xenopus oocytes expressing aquaporin 4 water channels were prepared to examine the effect of aqueous RE on cell volume, indicating a potential mechanism responsible for modulating net fluid absorption and secretion in the gastrointestinal tract. Statistical significance was assumed at P y one-way ANOVA. RESuLTS B o d y w e i g h t w a s s i g n i f i c a n t l y r e d u c e d i n r a t s administered 5-Fu compared to healthy controls(P u significantly increased intestinal MPO levels(≥ 307%; P y controls. However, LDR attenuated this effect in 5-Fu treated rats, significantly decreasing ileal MPO activity(by 45%; P u controls. 5-Fu significantly reduced intestinal mucosal thickness(by ≥ 29% P y controls. LDR significantly increased ileal mucosal thickness in 5-Fu treated rats(19%; P u controls. In xenopus oocytes expressing AQP4 water channels, RE selectively blocked water influx into the cell, induced by a decrease in external osmotic pressure. The first part of this paper summarizes relevant literature information, which rationalizes our selection of chemicals. The second part reports some preliminary screening results. We have investigated a wide range of reagents, chosen for their different chemistries and divided into seven classes: (1) reducing agents, (2) reduced sulfur compounds, (3) hydrogen donors, (4) antioxidants and radical scavengers, (5) nucleophiles, (6) chelating agents, and (7) oxidizing bleaching agents. It is noted that some chemical reagents fall into more than one class. The obtained results will be discussed with respect to the effectiveness of each class.

Smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) are the conjugate movements used to track the smooth trajectory of small dots. Jerky or ‘saccadic‘ocular pursuit has been reported in patients with cirrhosis, but no formal assessment of SPEM has ever been undertaken. The aim of this study was to evaluate SPEM in patients with ci rrhosis and varying degrees of hepatic encephalopathy. The patient population co mprised 56 individuals (31 men, 25 women) of mean age 51.1 (range, 25-70) years , with biopsy-proven cirrhosis, classified, using clinical, electroencephalogra phic, and psychometric variables, as either neuropsychiatrically.unimpaired or a s having minimal or overt hepatic encephalopathy; patients were further categori zed in relation to their treatment status. The reference population comprised 28 healthy volunteers (12 men, 16 women) of mean age 47.3 (range, 26-65) years. S PEM was assessed using an electro-oculographic technique. Visual inspection of the SPEM recordings showed clear disruption of smooth pursuit in the patients wi th minimal hepatic encephalopathy, and more pronounced disruption, if not comple te loss, of smooth pursuit in patients with overt hepatic encephalopathy. The di fferences observed in quantifiable SPE Mindices between the healthy volunteers/u nimpaired patients and those with overt hepatic encephalopathy were significant (P usion, SPEM performance is impaired in patients with hepatic encephalopathy in parallel with the degree of neuropsychiatric disturbance: the pathophysiology of these changes is unknown, but retinal, extrapyramidal, and attentional abnor malities are likely to play a role. Treatment status confounds the classificatio n of neuropsychiatric status and should be taken into account when categorizing these patients.
