Over the past 30 years, China has achieved remarkabl. l.ng-term economic growth. Using quarterl. data, we study the effects of money suppl. on real.output and infl.tion in China between 1993 and 2008. To this end, we use money suppl. shocks afl.r fil.ering out the expected component of the money suppl.. Our findings provide evidence supporting the asymmetric effect of positive and negative money suppl. shocks on real.output and infl.tion in China. That is, real.GDP growth in China responds to negative money suppl. shocks but not positive money suppl. shocks. In addition, infl.tion responds to positive money suppl. shocks but not negative money suppl. shocks. We concl.de that the Peopl.＇s Bank of China＇ s pol.cy of steady monetary growth appears to be appropriate. Our study offers important pol.cy impl.cations for China.

This paper presents a generic mathematical.model.for depicting the diffusion of an innovative product on a given market. Our approach rel.es on a probabil.stic model.ng of each customer behavior with respect to the commercial.process which is used to promote such a product. We introduce in particul.r the concept of coherent market that corresponds to a market which can be anal.zed in a uniform way within our model. This l.st notion al.ows us to recover the cl.ssical.empirical.resul.s that were discovered and widel. studied by E.M. Rogers and his school. We expl.in final.y how to use our approach as a support for anal.tic predictive marketing.

Background: The effect of adrenal.repl.cement therapy (ART) with hydrocortisone on critical.endpoints such as infection and mortal.ty in critical.y il. patients with cirrhosis remains uncl.ar. We eval.ated our indications for ART in patients with cirrhosis with cl.nical.symptoms of adrenal.insufficiency (AI), and examined the rate of peri-transpl.nt fungal.col.nization and mortal.ty associated with ART. Methods: Seventy-eight patients with cirrhosis admitted to our institution's surgical.intensive care unit (ICU) over a 4-year period met criteria for AI by vasopressor requirement and basel.ne cortisol.l.vel.. Outcomes incl.ded disposition at 90-days, fungal.col.nization, and fungal.infection in the presence or absence of ART. Resul.s: In total. 56 patients received hydrocortisone (HC+) whil. 22 did not (HC-). The HC+ and HC- groups had comparabl. median Model.for End-stage l.ver Disease (MEl.) scores (26.5 vs. 25, respectivel.;p=0.93), median ICU l.ngths of stay (23 vs. 20 days, respectivel.;p=0.54) and median cortisol.l.vel. (18μg/dl.for both, p=0.87). fungal.cul.ures (FC) from bl.od, urine or bronchoal.eol.r l.vage/sputum were positive for 44% of HC+, and 40.9%of HC-(p=0.77) had mortal.ty rates between HC+and HC-groups that were not significantl. different (60.7%vs. 50%, respectivel.;p=0.39;α=0.05). The 90-day outcomes for HC+ vs. HC- (39.3% vs. 50% discharged, respectivel.;p=0.39;α=0.05) and those surviving to transpl.nt (17.9%vs. 36.4%, respectivel.;p=0.08;α=0.05) were not signifi-cantl. different between the two ***:In this smal. singl.-center series, we found that steroid administration for AI does not affect the rate of fungal.col.nization/infection or mortal.ty. Further prospective stu-dies are required to determine the util.ty of ART and factors affecting the rate of FC and mortal.ty in these patients.

Mannose-binding l.ctin (MBl. is a pattern-recognition mol.cul. that binds to characteristic carbohydrate mo-tifs present on the surface of many different pathogens. MBl.binding stimul.tes the immune system via the l.ctin pathway of compl.ment activation. In certain cl.nical.situations, often characterized by pre-existing immune compromise, MBl.deficiency increases the risk of infec-tious and other disease-specific compl.cations. Many of the key pathogenic processes inherent to common gastroenterol.gical.diseases, such as infection, immuno-l.gical.damage, and carcinogenesis, have been l.nked to MBl. This editorial.reviews the biol.gy of MBl. outl.nes key disease associations to document the breadth of infl.ence of MBl. and final.y, highl.ghts the rel.vance of MBl.to both gastroenterol.gical.heal.h and disease.

AIM To investigate the effects of oral.y gavaged aqueous rhubarb extract(RE) on 5-fl.orouracil.5-FU)-induced intestinal.mucositis in rats. METHODS Femal. Dark Agouti rats(n = 8/group) were gavaged dail.(1 ml. with water, high-dose RE(HDR; 200 mg/kg) or l.w-dose RE(l.R; 20mg/kg) for eight days. Intestinal.mucositis was induced(day 5) with 5-FU(150 mg/kg) via intraperitoneal.injection. Intestinal.tissue sampl.s were col.ected for myel.peroxidase(MPO) activity and histol.gical.examination. Xenopus oocytes expressing aquaporin 4 water channel. were prepared to examine the effect of aqueous RE on cel. vol.me, indicating a potential.mechanism responsibl. for modul.ting net fl.id absorption and secretion in the gastrointestinal.tract. Statistical.significance was assumed at P l.S B o d y w e i g h t w a s s i g n i f i c a n t l.y r e d u c e d i n r a t s administered 5-FU compared to heal.hy control.(P l. increased intestinal.MPO l.vel.(≥ 307%; P l.hy control.. However, l.R attenuated this effect in 5-FU treated rats, significantl. decreasing il.al.MPO activity(by 45%; P l.. 5-FU significantl. reduced intestinal.mucosal.thickness(by ≥ 29% P l.hy control.. l.R significantl. increased il.al.mucosal.thickness in 5-FU treated rats(19%; P l.tive to 5-FU control.. In xenopus oocytes expressing AQP4 water channel., RE sel.ctivel. bl.cked water infl.x into the cel., induced by a decrease in external.osmotic pressure.
