Preparation of microparticles and nanoparticles using membrane-assisted dispersion,micromixing,and evaporation processes

Synthetic microporous membranes are increasingly used for energy-efficient and controlled production of micro-and nanoparticles and micro-and nanoemulsions with tuneable morphology and physico-chemical properties through various micromixing,emulsification,and evaporation processes.In emul-sification processes,the membrane pores are used for dispersed phase injection and size-controlled generation of droplets and droplet-templated particles.In micromixing processes,membrane is utilised as a micromixer for mixing two miscible liquids,usually solvent and antisolvent-rich solutions,which leads to the creation of supersaturation and subsequent nanoprecipitation or crystallisation.In mem-brane evaporation processes,membrane is used to prevent phase dispersion while allowing efficient molecular diffusion of solvent and/or antisolvent vapour through gas-filled pores.Membrane dispersion processes can be operated continuously by decoupling shear stress on the membrane surface from cross flow using tube insets,flow pulsations,swirling flow,membrane oscillations or membrane rotations.Droplet generation and solidification can be performed continuously in a single pass by connecting membrane module with a downstream reactor.Membrane dispersion processes can be used for pro-duction of nanoparticles such as nanovesicles(liposomes,micelles,ethosomes,and niosomes),nanogels,polymeric,lipid and metallic nanoparticles,and nanocrystals.the main advantages of membrane-assisted particle generation are in low energy consumption,controlled geometry and hydrodynamic conditions at the microscale level,flexible throughput due to modular and scalable design of membrane devices,and a wide choice of available microporous membranes with various wall porosities,wetta-bilities,pore sizes,and pore morphologies to suit different applications.

Recent advances in the production of controllable multiple emulsions using microfabricated devices

this review focuses on recent developments in the fabrication of multiple emulsions in micro-scale systems such as membranes, microchannel array, and microfluidic emulsification devices. Membrane and microchannel emulsification offer great potential to manufacture multiple emulsions with uniform drop sizes and high encapsulation efficiency of encapsulated active materials. Meanwhile, microfluidic devices enable an unprecedented level of control over the number, size, and type of internal droplets at each hierarchical level but suffer from low production scale. Microfluidic methods can be used to generate high-order multiple emulsions （triple, quadruple, and quintuple）, non-spherical （discoidal and rod-like） drops, and asymmetric drops such as Janus and ternary drops with two or three distinct surface regions. Multiple emulsion droplets generated in microfabricated devices can be used as templates for vesicles like polymersomes, liposomes, and colloidosomes with multiple inner compartments for simultaneous encaosulation and release of incomoatible active materials or reactants.

Background:the construction and operation of small multipurpose dams in Africa have a history of altering the transmission of water-based diseases,including schistosomiasis.the current study was designed to investigate the abundance and dynamics of schistosomiasis intermediate host snails and Schistosoma infections in humans during the construction and the first years of operation of a small multipurpose dam in Côte d’Ivoire.Methods:the study was carried out in Raffierkro and four neighbouring villages in central Côte d’Ivoire between 2007 and 2012.Snails were collected by two experienced investigators using scoops and forceps for 15 min at each site.Snails were identified at genera and,whenever possible,species level,and subjected to testing for cercarial shedding.Schoolchildren aged 6-15 years were examined once every year for Schistosoma haematobium and S.mansoni infection,using urine filtration and duplication Kato-Katz thick smears,respectively.Additionally,551 adults were examined for Schistosoma infection before(June 2007)and 359 individuals 2 years after dam construction(June 2009).Results:Overall,1700 snails belonging to nine different genera were collected from 19 sampling sites.Bulinus(potential intermediate host snails of S.haematobium)and Pila were the most common genera,whereas Biomphalaria(potential intermediate host snail of S.mansoni),Lymnaea,Physa and Melanoides were found in two villages.During the first-year sampling period,65 snails were collected,of which 13(20%)were schistosomiasis intermediate hosts.In subsequent years,out of 1635 snails collected,1079(66%)were identified as potential intermediate host for schistosomiasis,but none were shedding cercariae.the prevalence of S.mansoni among adults in the study area was low(0.4%in 2007 and 0.3%in 2009),whereas the prevalence of S.haematobium declined from 13.9%to 2.9%in this two-year period.Conclusions:the low prevalence of schistosomiasis in humans and the absence of infected intermediate host snails during the construction and early phase of

Background Schistosomiasis remains an important public health problem,also among adults,and infected individuals not treated serve as a reservoir for continued transmission.Despite this fact,evidence on the epidemiology of schistosomiasis in adults in Côte d’Ivoire is scanty.this study aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of Schistosoma infection and co-infection with other helminth species and Plasmodium among adults in the taabo region in the south-central part of Côte d’Ivoire.Methods A cross-sectional survey was carried out in April and May 2017 in the frame of the“Côte d’Ivoire Dual Burden of Disease Study”(CoDuBu).A total of 901 randomly selected individuals,aged 18–90 years,provided blood,stool and urine samples for the diagnosis of malaria and helminth infections.Stool samples were subjected to the Kato-Katz technique for detection of Schistosoma mansoni and soil-transmitted helminth eggs,while urine samples were examined for eggs of Schistosoma haematobium and circulating cathodic antigen of S.mansoni.Risk factors and morbidity profiles were assessed using health examination and questionnaires.Multinomial logistic regressions were employed to identify risk factors and morbidity patterns associated with S.mansoni mono-and co-infections.Results the prevalence of S.mansoni and S.haematobium was 23.2%and 1.0%,respectively.Most S.mansoni were mono-infections(81.3%).Independent determinants of S.mansoni infection were young age,low socioeconomic status(mono-and co-infection)and poor hygiene practices(co-infection)(Ption was independently associated with higher pain and symptom scores(mono-infection),poor self-rated health and low healthcare use(co-infection)(Pthis study showed that adults represent a substantial reservoir of S.mansoni.to sustain schistosomiasis control and improve people’s wellbeing,it is important to expand preventive chemotherapy from school-aged children to adults,coupled with hygiene and health education.

Kinetic and thermodynamic Study of the Elimination of Remazol Black on Activated Carbon Based on Ricinodendron heudelotii Shells

Activated carbon made from the shells of Ricinodendron heudelotii was used to remove the remazol black dye in aqueous solution. the results of the characterization of this carbon revealed that it is microporous, with a basic global surface (0.337 mmol/L) and a specific surface of 612 m2/g. the prepared carbon therefore has excellent adsorbent properties. Kinetic and thermodynamic studies were carried out to describe the adsorption mechanism of remazol black on this carbon. It appears from this study that the pseudo-second-order kinetic model is the best suited to describe this adsorption phenomenon with an equilibrium time of 200 min. the adsorption equilibrium study revealed that Langmuir and Freundlich models can help to describe the adsorption process. We note that the optimum pH and optimum mass for the removal of 20 mg/L of remazol black are 3 and 0.25 g, respectively. this carbon made it possible to eliminate more than 98% of the remazol dye in aqueous solution. the thermodynamic study revealed that the adsorption is of the physisorption type, spontaneous and endothermic.

In most developing countries, particularly in the countries of sub-Saharan Africa, corn cobs are considered as waste polluting the environment during the harvest period of this cereal. In order to valorize this agricultural waste, high-performance, inexpensive and low-energy consumption magnetic bioadsorbents were prepared from corn cobs. the chemically activated raw corn cob was magnetized by coating the surface with magnetite nanoparticles. the prepared biosorbents were characterized by Ft-IR, XRD, FE-SEM associated with EDX, HR-tEM, tG analysis, BEt surface area analysis and XPS. the maximum specific surface area of 35.22 m2/g was reached. An attempt to use of these magnetic biosorbents for the removal of heavy metal like Cr(VI) from aqueous solution was envisaged.

Convective Schrodinger Equation:Insights on the Potential Energy’s Role to Wave Particle Decay

In this paper, we coupled the Quantum Mechanics conventional Schrödinger’s equation, for the particles, with the Maxwell’s wave equation, in order to study the potential’s role on the conversion of the electromagnetic field energy to mass and vice versa. We show that the dissipation (“conductivity”) factor and the particle implicit proper frequency are both related to the potential energy. We have also derived a new expression for the Schrödinger’s Equation considering the potential energy into this equation not as an ad hoc term, but also as an operator (Hermitian), which has the scalar potential energy as a natural eigenvalue of this operator.

In this paper experimental data about the creep behavior of high strength low-alloy （HSLA, AStM A618） steel are presented. For different elevated temperatures （ti） tensile tests （σ?ε） are carried out and also for some of the mentioned elevated temperatures one-dimensional creep tests （ε-t） for different constant loads （Fi） are made. Experiments are carried out using computer controlled 400 kN materials testing machine equipped by a high temperature furnace and a corresponding high temperature extensometer. these experiments belong to the testing material mechanical properties and viscoplastic responses of the material under consideration. the obtained results of material properties and creep behavior are necessary for determining e.g. the load-carrying capacity of a structure under fire conditions as well as for its lifetime prediction..

Hot-wire chemical vapor deposition low-loss hydrogenated amorphous silicon waveguides for silicon photonic devices

We demonstrate low-loss hydrogenated amorphous silicon(a-Si:H) waveguides by hot-wire chemical vapor deposition(HWCVD). the effect of hydrogenation in a-Si at different deposition temperatures has been investigated and analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. We obtained an optical quality a-Si:H waveguide deposited at 230°C that has a strong Raman peak shift at 480 cm^(-1), peak width(full width at half-maximum) of 68.9 cm^(-1), and bond angle deviation of 8.98°. Optical transmission measurement shows a low propagation loss of 0.8 dB/cm at the1550 nm wavelength, which is the first, to our knowledge, report for a HWCVD a-Si:H waveguide.

Several Dengue: About 2 Cases with Pulmonary Disease

the most widespread arbovirus in the world, dengue fever has been rampant since the 18th century. Since then, several epidemics have been documented in Asia, the Caribbean, South America and Africa. the authors report two cases of dengue fever in children aged six (6) and twelve (12) years respectively. the diagnosis of several dengue pulmonary was retained in these children, clinico-radiological and biological arguments. In addition to the hemorrhagic syndrome, the pulmonary symptomatology associated cough, dyspnea. Chest X-ray revealed bilateral and extensive alveolar interstitial radiological lesions. From a biological point of view, the positivity of dengue-specific IgM has confirmed arboviruses. From the diagnostic peculiarities of the cases observed, the authors suggest the search for factors associated with a primary dengue infection from several onsets to pulmonary manifestation in children. Indeed, this fringe of the population is no longer concerned with acute respiratory infections. In addition, the socio-cultural context of poverty, of pre-hospital therapeutic itinerary favoring traditional medicine, delays hospital care.
