Seedling defoliation of cereal crops increases peanut growth and yield in an intercropping system

Intercropping cereals and legumes is practiced widely in the world for improving yields and economic benefits. Shorter legume crops in intercropping are shaded by taller cereals, substantially reducing legume growth and yield. Reducing shade in intercropping by shortening the plant height of cereals by seedling defoliation has been proposed as a practical approach to increase crop yields and land productivity. A two-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of defoliation of cereal crops at seedling stage on the growth and yield of peanut(Arachis hypogaea L.) intercropped with corn(Zea mays L.) or millet(Setaria italica L.). In comparison with non-defoliation controls, defoliation reduced final plant height by 29 cm on average for corn and 18 cm for millet. Photosynthetically active radiation on peanut in intercropping systems with corn or millet intercropping was respectively 27.0% and 22.8% higher than those in controls, significantly improving the light environment of intercropped peanut. Net photosynthetic rates of peanut were on average 25.5% higher in corn and peanut intercropping and 19.6% higher in millet and peanut intercropping than those in non-defoliation controls. Total biomass of intercropped peanut increased owing to increased root growth. Across two years, yield of peanut intercropped with corn was 27.7% and with millet 32.8% higher than those of controls. Defoliation of cereal crops did not affect corn yield but significantly decreased millet yield by 24.5%. Our results suggest that applying seedling defoliation in intercropped corn could increase peanut yield without compromising corn yield in an intercropping system.

Exploring the mechanism of Buxue Yimu Pill on hemorrhagic anemia through molecular docking, network pharmacology and experimental validation

Buxue Yimu Pill(BYP) is a classic gynecological medicine in China, which is composed of Angelica sinensis(Oliv.)Diels, Leonurus japonicus Houtt, Astragalus membranaceus(Fisch.) Bunge, Colla corii asini and Citrus reticulata Blanco. It has been widely used in clinical therapy with the function of enriching Blood, nourishing Qi, and removing blood stasis. The current study was designed to determine the bioactive molecules and therapeutic mechanism of BYP against hemorrhagic anemia. Herein, GC-MS and UPLC/Q-TOF-MS/MS were employed to identify the chemical compounds from BYP. The genecards database(https://***/) was used to obtain the potential target proteins related to hemorrhagic anemia. Autodock/Vina was adopted to evaluate the binding ability of protein receptors and chemical ligands. Gene ontology and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis were conducted using the Cluster Profiler. As a result, a total of 62 candidate molecules were identified and 152 targets related to hemorrhagic anemia were obtained. Furthermore, 34 active molecules and 140 targets were obtained through the virtual screening experiment. The data of molecular-target(M-T), target-pathway(T-P), and molecular-target-pathway(M-T-P) network suggested that 32 active molecules enhanced hematopoiesis and activated the immune system by regulating 57 important targets. Pharmacological experiments showed that BYP significantly increased the counts of RBC, HGB, and HCT, and significantly down-regulated the expression of EPO, IL-6, CSF3,NOS2, VEGFA, PDGFRB, and TGFB1. The results also showed that leonurine, leonuriside B, leosibiricin, ononin, rutin, astragaloside I, riligustilide and levistolide A, were the active molecules closely related to enriching Blood. In conclusion, based on molecular docking, network pharmacology and validation experiment results, the enriching blood effect of BYP on hemorrhagic anemia may be associated with hematopoiesis, anti-inflammation, and immunity enhancement.

ANXA2 Facilitates Enterovirus 71 Infection by Interacting with 3D Polymerase and PI4KB to Assist the Assembly of Replication Organelles

Similar to that of other enteroviruses, the replication of enterovirus 71(EV71) occurs on rearranged membranous structures called replication organelles(ROs). Phosphatidylinositol 4-kinase Ⅲ(PI4KB), which is required by enteroviruses for RO formation, yields phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate(PI4P) on ROs. PI4P then binds and induces conformational changes in the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase(Rd Rp) to modulate Rd Rp activity. Here, we targeted 3D polymerase, the core enzyme of EV71 ROs, and found that the host factor Annexin A2(ANXA2) can interact with 3 D polymerase and promote the replication of EV71. Then, an experiment showed that the annexin domain of ANXA2, which possesses membranebinding capacity, mediates the interaction of ANXA2 with EV71 3 D polymerase. Further research showed that ANXA2 is localized on ROs and interacts with PI4KB. Overexpression of ANXA2 stimulated the formation of PI4P, and the level of PI4P was decreased in ANXA2-knockout cells. Furthermore, ANXA2, PI4KB, and 3D were shown to be localized to the viral RNA replication site, where they form a higher-order protein complex, and the presence of ANXA2 promoted the PI4 KB-3D interaction. Altogether, our data provide new insight into the role of ANXA2 in facilitating formation of the EV71 RNA replication complex.

Effect of travel speed on seed spacing uniformity of corn seed meter

Both seeding performance of seed metering unit and travel speed of seed planter have significant effects on seeding quality,thereby affecting crop growth and *** order to determine the effects of different travel speeds on seed spacing uniformity,four different types of seed meters were evaluated at five different travel speeds on seed meter test bench and in *** tested seed meters included a finger pickup seed meter,a scoop-wheel seed meter,an air-pressure type seed meter and an air-blowing type seed *** seeding performance of the horizontal distribution of seeds within a row was described by using the coefficient of variation,the quality of feed index,the multiple index and the miss-seeding *** were performed in laboratory and field,*** indicated that different travel speeds have statistically significant effects on seed spacing *** four types of seed meters performed better on the seed meter test bench than in the *** of variation increases and quality of feed index decreases as the travel speed of seed planter *** best seed spacing uniformity was obtained with the air-pressure type seed meter,followed with the air-blowing type seed meter,the finger pickup seed meter and the scoop-wheel seed *** were considerable differences between the performances of the scoop-wheel seed meter in the bench test and field test;the seeding qualities were much better in the bench test than in the field *** scoop-wheel seed meter is more sensitive to vibration than the other types of seed meters.

Antimony sulfide(Sb_(2)S_(3))is an appealing semiconductor as light absorber for solar cells due to its high absorption coefficient,appropriate band gap(~1.7 e V)and abundance of constituent ***,power conversion efficiency(PCE)of Sb_(2)S_(3)-based solar cells still lags much behind the theoretically predicted due to the imperfect energy level alignment at the charge transporting layer/Sb_(2)S_(3)interfaces and hence severe charge ***,we insert a high-temperature sintered magnesium(Mg)-doped tin oxide(SnO_(2))layer between cadmium sulfide(Cd S)and fuorine doped tin oxide to form a cascaded energy level alignment and thus mitigate interfacial charge ***,the inserted Mg-doped Sn O_(2)buffer layer facilitates the growth of the neibouring Cd S film with orientation followed by Sb_(2)S_(3)film with larger grains and fewer ***,the resultant Sb_(2)S_(3)solar cells with Mg-doped SnO_(2)deliver a champion PCE of 6.31%,22.8%higher than those without a buffer *** work demonstrates that deliberate absorber growth as well as efficient hole blocking upon an appropriate buffer layer is viable in obtaining solution-processed Sb_(2)S_(3)solar cells with high performance.

Responses of Carbon Sink of Ecosystem Vegetation to Land Use Changes in Kunming City

[Objectives]To analyze the relationship between the land use pattern and the carbon sequestration level of the ecosystem vegetation in Kunming City,and to provide a certain reference for optimizing the land ecological use pattern and scientific carbon reduction and sequestration.[Methods]Based on remote sensing data,meteorological data,vegetation data and soil data,the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach(CASA)was adopted to estimate the vegetation net primary productivity(NPP)in Kunming during 2005-2020,and then the vegetation carbon sink was calculated through the plant mortality ***,it established the land use transfer matrix of Kunming City,and analyzed the change characteristics of the carbon sink of ecosystem vegetation in Kunming City under the influence of land use changes.[Results]During 2005-2020,the water area,construction land and unused land area in Kunming increased by 43.52,710.51 and 2.8 km 2,respectively;farmland,woodland and grassland decreased by 269.72,140.20 and 347.03 km 2,respectively;farmland,woodland,grassland,water area,construction land and unused land caused a total of 58212.72 t of vegetation net carbon sink loss in land conversion,accounting for 14.88%,25.23%,11.95%,10.58%,37.09%,and 0.26%,respectively.[Conclusions]This study is expected to help to improve the ecological carbon sequestration capacity of Kunming and promote the sustainable development of land resources.

Compact intense electron-beam accelerators based on high energy density liquid pulse forming lines

This paper provides a review of the compact intense electron-beam accelerators (IEBAs) based on liquid pulse forming lines (PFLs) that havebeen developed at the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) in China. The history and roadmap of the compact IEBAs used todrive high-power microwave (HPM) devices at NUDT are reviewed. The properties of both de-ionized water and glycerin as energy storagemedia are presented. Research into the breakdown properties of liquid dielectrics and the desire to maximize energy storage have resulted in theinvention of several coaxial PFLs with different electromagnetic structures, which are detailed in this paper. These high energy density liquidPFLs have been used to increase the performance of IEBA subsystems, based on which the SPARK (Single Pulse Accelerator with spark gaps)and HEART (High Energy-density Accelerator with Repetitive Transformer) series of IEBAs were constructed. This paper also discusses howthese compact IEBAs have been used to drive typical HPM devices and concludes by summarizing the associated achievements and theconclusions that can be drawn from the results.
