Sacral neuromodulation therapy of the lower urinary tract: A review of the literature and unanswered questions

Objective: To review the evidence surrounding Sacral Neuromodulation therapy and delineate areas that will need more research. Methods: An extensive search was performed on the available literature on SNM for lower urinary tract dysfunction. Based on the results of the search, the mechanisms of action, indications, technique, and patient characteristics of therapy failures and success are presented and discussed. Results: SNM is accepted by the FDA since 1997 for the treatment of lower urinary tract dysfunction. As it is a relatively new procedure, there are variations in the technique of lead placement, generator choice, testing interval, patient selection, time to explantation, and definitions of therapy failures and successes. Conclusions: SNM is a safe and therapeutic option for the treatment of urgencyfrequency syndrome, urge incontinence, and idiopathic urinary retention. However, there are multiple unanswered questions that require extensive research.

Virus-related cancer is cancer where viral infection leads to the malignant transformation of the host's infected cells. Seven viruses (e.g., human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV), Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV), Human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV), and Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCV)) that infect humans have been identified as an oncogene and have been associated with several human malignancies. Recently, growing attention has been attracted to exploring the pathogenesis of virus-related cancers. One of the most mysterious molecules involved in carcinogenesis and progression of virus-related cancers is circular RNAs (circRNA). These emerging non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), due to the absence of 5′ and 3′ ends, have high stability than linear RNAs and are found in some species across the eukaryotic organisms. Compelling evidence has revealed that viruses also encode a repertoire of circRNAs, as well as dysregulation of these viral circRNAs play a critical role in the pathogenesis and progression of different types of virus-related cancers. Therefore, understanding the exact role and function of the virally encoded circRNAs with virus-associated cancers will open a new road for increasing our knowledge about the RNA world. Hence, in this review, we will focus on emerging roles of virus-encoded circRNAs in multiple cancers, including cervical cancer, gastric cancer, Merkel cell carcinoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Kaposi cancer, and liver cancer.

Comparative study of self-compassion and sense of coherence in nurses of psychiatric hospitals

Objective:Nurses,due to the nature of their job,are subjected to various forms of stress and physical and psychological injuries.Self-compassion and a sense of coherence have attracted much attention in research in recent years as having high potential for improving the health and performance of people in the workplace.The present study aimed to compare self-compassion and the sense of coherence in nurses working in psychiatric hospitals and other hospitals of Kerman University of Medical Sciences.Methods:The present study was a descriptive-comparative study of applied type conducted on 100 nurses of Shahid Beheshti Psychiatric Hospital in Kerman by the census method and 100 nurses of other hospitals of Kerman University of Medical Sciences by the stratified random sampling method.The instruments included the self-compassion questionnaire and the sense of coherence questionnaire.Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software.Results:The results of the present study showed that self-compassion and sense of coherence were higher in psychiatric nurses(39.35±7.7 and 53.02±8.01)than among other nurses(36.03±5.81 and 49.76±6.30).There was a direct and moderate relationship between a sense of coherence and self-compassion(P-value<0.005).The higher the score of compassion for oneself,the higher was the score of sense of coherence.Furthermore,the sense of coherence had a direct and weak relationship with all dimensions of self-compassion,except for the extreme imitation dimension,which showed a direct and moderate relationship to other dimensions(P-value<0.001).Conclusions:Self-compassion and a sense of coherence,as a form of self-communication,increase nurses’satisfaction and reduce nurses’job stress and,as a result,job performance is improved.

We study cosmic dynamics in the context of the normal branch of the DGP braneworld model. Using current Planck data, we find the best fitting model and associated cosmological parameters in non-fiat ADGP. With the transition redshift as a basic variable and statefinder parameters, our result shows that the Universe starts its accelerated expansion phase slightly earlier than expected in ACDM cosmology. The result also alleviates the coincidence problem of the ACDM model.

This work presents the electronic behavior of Ti and TiN thin films when exposed to electrolytes with pH levels of 2,7 and 13 for 90 days.Staircase potentio-electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests were performed on the 100-nm Ti and TiN monolithic films,and MottSchottky analysis of these tests was used to determine the films’ semiconductive behavior and changes in the donor/acceptor density.In addition,the flat-band potential of each film’s surface oxide was also characterized.No attempt was made to control oxide formation,and therefore,these tests reflected the native surfaces of these films.While the TiN films exhibited n-type semiconductivity in all electrolytes,the Ti films only showed n-type behavior in the acidic(pH=2) and neutral(pH=7) electrolytes.The semiconductivity of the Ti films transitioned to p-type during exposure to the basic electrolyte(pH=13) after reaching 60 days.Furthermore,there was a significant increase in the donor densities for both Ti and TiN films when immersed in the basic electrolyte relative to the acidic and neutral electrolytes.

Varying speed of light （VSL） has been used in cosmological models in which the physical constants vary over time. On the other hand, the Dvali, Gabadadze and Porrati （DGP） brahe world model, especially its normal branch, has been extensively discussed to justify the current cosmic acceleration. In this article we show that the normal branch of DGP in VSL cosmology leads to a self-accelerating behavior and therefore can interpret cosmic acceleration. Applying statefinder diagnostics demonstrates that our result slightly deviates from the ACDM model.

Background: In spine surgery postoperative closed suction drainage is used to decrease the potential risks of wound hematoma formation, and reduces the risk of infection, cord compression and neurologic deficit. However, the efficacy of drains used for this purpose in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is controversial. The purpose of this study is to evaluate outcomes of patients after posterior spinal fusion with instrumentation for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis without wound suction drainage. Methods: A total of 66 Patients who underwent posterior spinal fusion and instrumentation for the correction of Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis without the use of drain from January 2012 to January 2021 were included. Wound dehiscence, wound hematoma, infection, preoperative and postoperative hemoglobin levels and need for transfusion were described as frequency and mean values. Results: The average age was 15.06 years. Hospital stay was 2.2 days. Patients were followed-up over 50.21 months. There was no deep infection, wound hematoma. The difference between just postoperative and three days after operation hemoglobin levels was not significant and no need for transfusion. Only 3 (4.5%) cases with superficial skin infection and 4 (6%) cases with skin and Wound dehiscence were treated with dressing and antibiotics with full recovery. Conclusion: Without using drain for patients with idiopathic scoliosis who underwent posterior spinal fusion and instrumentation, no increase in blood loss, transfusion requirements, wound infection, skin dehiscence, and wound hematoma was observed.

Prevalence of Diabetes and Its Effect on the Course and Treatment of Frozen Shoulder

Background: Frozen shoulder is a painful condition that can lead to long-term disability. The frequency of frozen shoulder among diabetic patients is about 10% to 39%. Diabetics have a higher prevalence of frozen shoulder than the general population, and these individuals are less responsive to therapy and have a larger range of motion limitation. Aim: The aim of this thesis is to determine the prevalence of diabetes among patients with frozen shoulder and to compare them in terms of demographics, clinical and treatment features. Method: This study was performed on patients who had been diagnosed with frozen shoulder at an orthopedic center in Mashhad, Iran, from 2012 to October 2021. The frequencies and cross tabulations were used to analyze the data by SPSS to determine the significance of relationships. The chi-square and t-tests have been used with a p-value less than 0.05 as the alpha level of significance. Results: Among the patients, the average age was 56 years old. Among 310 patients with Frozen shoulder, 36% were diabetic. There was no statistically significant difference in gender and level of activity between patients with and without diabetes. In contrast, the side of the affected shoulder, duration of frozen shoulder, stage of frozen shoulder and treatment of frozen shoulder were statistically significantly different between the two groups (p p Conclusion: Based on this study, around one-third of frozen shoulder patients have diabetes. Although there was a statistically significant difference in the treatment of frozen shoulder between patients with and without diabetes groups, diabetic individuals have a more severe course of illness, and their treatment is less effective.

Background Hepatitis B virus(HBV)and hepatitis C virus(HCV)infections are common among individuals with human immune deficiency virus(HIV)infection worldwide.In this study,we did a systematic review and meta-analysis of the published literature to estimate the global and regional prevalence of HCV,HBV and HIV coinfections among HIV-positive prisoners.Methods We searched PubMed via MEDLINE,Embase,the Cochrane Library,SCOPUS,and Web of science(ISI)to identify studies that reported the prevalence of HBV and HCV among prisoners living with HIV.We used an eight-item checklist for critically appraisal studies of prevalence/incidence of a health problem to assess the quality of publications in the included 48 cross-sectional and 4 cohort studies.We used random-effect models and meta-regression for the meta-analysis of the results of the included studies.Results The number of the included studies were 50 for HCV-HIV,and 23 for HBV-HIV co-infections.The pooled prevalence rates of the coinfections were 12%[95%confidence interval(CI)9.0–16.0]for HBV-HIV and 62%(95%CI 53.0–71.0)for HCV-HIV.Among HIV-positive prisoners who reported drug injection,the prevalence of HBV increased to 15%(95%CI 5.0–23.0),and the HCV prevalence increased to 78%(95%CI 51.0–100).The prevalence of HBV-HIV coinfection among prisoners ranged from 3%in the East Mediterranean region to 27%in the American region.Also,the prevalence of HCV-HIV coinfections among prisoners ranged from 6%in Europe to 98%in the East Mediterranean regions.Conclusions Our findings suggested that the high prevalence of HBV and HCV co-infection among HIV-positive prisoners,particularly among those with a history of drug injection,varies significantly across the globe.The results of Meta-regression analysis showed a sliding increase in the prevalence of the studied co-infections among prisoners over the past decades,rising a call for better screening and treatment programs targeting this high-risk population.To prevent the above coinfections among prisoners,aimed public health ser
